The seal was conceptualized during the 10th year of NAMCYA, playing up the monograms or the first letter of the words that stand for NAMCYA. As creativity runs through it, connotations of music symbol, sound waves and vibration design were elaborated in line order;

The outermost vibrations of sound waves stand for “N” (National) covering the entire nation/ country

The whole sound waves being fine in its vibration itself stand for “M” (Music)

The first sound vibration which is the object of “C” (Competition)

A symbol of growing seed for “Y” (Young) and a music note

A representation “A” (Artist)

Cultural Center of the Philippines The National Music Competitions for Young Artists embarks on its 37th year in 2010 with a renewed dedication to its triple mandate of talent discovery, talent exposure and artistic

education.

The Competition continues to include the component of Master Class Workshops and will incorporate performances as well in its regional forays.

The theme for this year mirrors even more clearly decades of service to the national and international community of musicians. “Musika at Sining: Diwa ng Sangkatauhan” reiterates the belief that it is in the shaping of the youth that is shaped also humanity in its entirety.

It is the hope of NAMCYA that in decades to come there will be an even firmer realization that it is primarily and substantially through the ennoblement of the human spirit - in NAMCYA through Music - that an ennoblement of the entire human being can be accomplished.

Young outstanding talent in the following instruments and categories shall be discovered in 2010.Banduria - Category C

We, Filipinos, find profound affinity with music. It is not unusual then to see karaoke bars and recording studios rise at every street corner in the country today. Singing contests have also captured the hearts of many to pin their hopes in these instant rides to fame. But this should not always be the case, especially if we want to raise the bar of excellence.

We are grateful that the National Music Competition for Young Artists (NAMCYA) took to heart the daunting tasks of harnessing the talents of the youngergeneration of Filipino musicians, preserve, develop and promote Philippine music. Since its founding in 1973, we have been witness to its rich harvest of excellent and exceptional talents by continuously reaping honor for our country, building national pride through their world-class performances, from pianist Cecile Licad and Raul Sunico to violinist Alfonso “Coke” Bolipata to chorales like the UP Singing Ambassadors, Ateneo Glee Club, the Loboc Childrens Choir and Himig Singers of Davao City, among many others.

On behalf of the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA), my warmest felicitations to the NAMCYA for its unwavering commitment to excellence and for providing opportunity for the young artists to showcase to the world their gift of music. This extends to all the participants of this year’s NAMCYA for breaking out of their shells and making it this far. It is our hope that they will not forget that their music and talent are not just their ticket to instant fame, but rather a form of expression that will reflect the Filipino identity.

Mabuhay po kayong lahat!

FFor many years, we have seen how NAMCYA has encouraged the best young artists from different regions to compete in various instrumental and vocal categories, through a long and tedious selection process.

This year’s competition, billed as “Musika at Sining: Diwa ng Sangkatauhan”, or Music and the Arts: The Soul of Humanity” is no doubt another exciting and meaningful spectacle to behold, as our bright and promising performers vie for top prizes in competition categories, among them, Banduria, Choir, Dance, Marimba, Piano, Traditional Music and Voice.

Not many people know that we have in our midst world-class performers who where also NAMCYA winners in the past and who have earned accolades in the local and International music scene- pianists like Rowena Arrieta and Jovianney Emmanuel Cruz, violinists Joseph Esmilla and Alfonso Bolipata, flutist Antonio Maigue, Cellist Renato Lucas, singers Tenor John Glenn Gaerlan and Soprano Rachelle Gerodias, to name a few.

For the next few days, we shall witness many art songs, piano music, traditional music, dance movements, choral and chamber works to be performed by a new generation of gifted artists who, I am certain, will shine forth in their respective endeavors in the future.

I am confident that the NAMCYA, through its participants and harvest of winners every year, will continue not only to inspire young artists to hone their crafts, but will also be a channel to foster peace and cooperation in our country through the joys of music.

To the participants of NAMCYA this year, win or lose, be the best of what you can be. You hold your future in your hands and you mold in your heart the inspiration of talent, dedication and foundation for nurturing aspiring artists and musicians.

Mabuhay ang lahat ng artistang Filipino! Thank you very much.

Music is one of the ties that bind the many islands of the Philippine archipelago. Music does what the timid heart cannot verbalize because it has the majesty to express eloquently the longing of the heart.

We have a lullaby to embrace with music a sleepy baby. We have songs that chronicle the excitement and the indiscretion of our youth, the bitterness of a love unrequited or the ecstasy of an affection reciprocated. We have songs about getting old and remembering, about life and living, about death and life beyond.

Music, to us Filipinos, is an expression of the soul. It mirrors the core of our being as an individual, as Filipinos.

We are therefore deeply honored in working closely with the National Commission for the Culture and the Arts, the Cultural Center of the Philippines and the National Music Competitions for Young Artists Foundation for holding the National Music Competitions for Young Artists.

This is a good venue, like no other, in showcasing the best of the best of Filipino artistry in music. Whether singing a capella or accompanied by a full orchestra, performing a number solo or in a group, playing the piano, banduria and marimba, or dancing - give your all, don’t hold back, express yourself and leave your mark.

National Music Competitions for Young Artists

Message

It is my greatest honor and pleasure to again welcome the best of the best of our young musicians to this year’s NAMCYA.

This annual event is not so much a competition as it is a bell weather of the state of Filipino music and our young musicians. From my vantage point as chairperson, I can honestly say that classic Filipino music is not only alive and well, but thriving.

I do not know from what well spring the bountiful harvest of musical talent comes from. I can only say that it has remained evident for the past many decades, which tells me that we can expect future generations of yet unborn Filipino musicians of the highest order to come. We will never be short of musical talent, to be sure.

NAMCYA’s role is to see to it that our young talents are developed to their maximum potential. We want to guarantee them lifelong careers as musicians.

The year 2010 should prove to be another milestone for Philippine music, as we witness this year’s edition of NAMCYA.

AA new competition cycle has begun. Last year the theme of the spirit in and of music and the arts being the true spring from which all beautiful environments spring becomes more palpable in this year’s theme: that it is this same spirit that brings to life and invigorates all human existence.

Despite the attempted incursions and at times, the inroads made by less-than-ideal artistic products into people’s aesthetic sensibilities, the NAMCYA continues to believe in and to forge opportunities, avenues and activities (in and by which the young execute, and all ages appreciate) which hold up excellence as the true standard by which all human endeavor ought to be judged.

We are grateful for your commitment and support. Continue to believe with us, for the sake of future generations.

Mabuhay kayong lahat. Mabuhay ang mga alagad ng sining ng sambayanang Pilipino!

WGreetings to our young Filipino musicians.

We have a very exciting line-up for 2010. This year we feature the comeback of two Instruments which have been around for a long time in the Philippine music scene but have not been presented for a while, the Banduria and the Marimba.

Children’s choirs will also compete this year, the lone Instrument for Category A. The youth of secondary or high school age will vie for the best performance of Traditional Music Ensembles.

The Senior Ballet competition, one of the most popular in the NAMCYA, is expected to showcase the upcoming stars of the ballet scene. New variations in this year’s Piano and Voice competitions will provide extra challenge to our Category C contestants.

On behalf of the NAMCYA Secretariat and the Chairpersons of the Instrument competitions, please join us as we commence in our search for the best and brightest in Ballet, Banduria, Children’s Choir, Marimba, Piano, Traditional Music Ensembles, and Voice.

In Bontoc folklore, the hero Lumawig witnesses how the Baguilota (Earth) tribes keep on fighting with each other. His father, the almighty god Kabunian, notices his distress and allows him to descend to earth to devise a plan to stop the chaos. During Lumawig’s time on earth, he falls in love with Bangan, who is the epitome of beauty and diligence. They get married and are blessed with a son who is taught the cultures and traditions of the tribe. Since it is a tradition in the Cordilleras that men work and provide for their families, Lumawig uses his godly powers to tend the fields. However, after some time, Bangan’s disobedience angers Lumawig so he leaves her and, together with his son, returns to heaven. Bangan exhausts all means to win back her family. Lumawig sees his wife’s sincere repentance and an atmosphere of forgiveness envelops his heart. The immortal father and his son are reunited with Bangan and together they celebrate a renewed life together.

This folklore depicts the special qualities of the Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR), home of peace–loving people, site of abundant natural resources: pristine forests, rugged mountains, rolling hills and valleys; and seat of rich indigenous cultural diversities. Rituals with accompanying singing and dancing helps to alleviate the burden of work.

TALUKSANGAY ETHNIC ENSEMBLEConductor: Rugaiya LegardoTaluksangay, Zamboanga City, REGION IX

This presentation depicts the traditional wedding ceremonies and culture of the Samal Banguingui tribe from Taluksangay, Zamboanga.

The courtship is a traditional and prominent ritual practiced among the Banguguis. During the “pagtunggu-tunang” (courtship), the groom serves the bride’s family, until such time when the groom is deemed worthy to ask for the dowry of the bride, the “pagturutayma”. These practices, including marriage, may materialize even before the parties reach the age of puberty.

During the traditional wedding which may be a simple or elaborate ceremony, an imam and other religious personalies perform prayers and chants.

This presentation further showcases the distinct traditional and ceremonial rites of the Samal Banguiguis in child rearing. A ceremonial preparation is done during the “pag-anak”, the giving birth, in which a call of prayer, known as “azan”, is whispered by the father to the child. A week after the child’s birth, the “paggunting” is traditionally performed. The “paggunting” is the ritual of cutting the dried umbilical cord of the infant accompanied by prayers and chants called “Asarakal Salawat”.

Bagobo Tagabawa is a tribe rich in customs and traditions as shown in the presentation.

Anig is a festival of Thanksgiving for good harvest practiced by the Bagobo Tagabawa tribe. The presentation shows how the Bagobo Tagabawa values nature as part of their daily activities and how important it is for them to ask God for good harvest and to thank God for the blessings they receive.

The sambila, calls for unity from the tribesmen with a chant asking for permission from nature to perform the rituals. Objects or animals are used as symbols. The udak, which is made of wood and bamboo, produces a loud noise to expel evil spirits from the fields. A chicken is offered as sacrifice to prevent the bad spirit from destroying crops. Dances symbolize generosity, unity, and happiness.

Elders of the tribe are able to preserve the culture and traditions by teaching the younger generations

SIBOL THEATER ARTSConductor: Eamon Flem B. DoplonIligan City East High School, Sta. Filomena, Iligan City, REGION X

Maranaos are from Lanao del Sur, a province of Region X. They are named after the word “ranao” meaning lake. Maranaos, people of the lake, are blessed with a rich culture and unique traditions.

The Kakulintang is played during festive occasions. The Maranao terms for festivities are “kalilang” for smaller festivals which last for a day or two, and “kariala” for bigger festivals which could take weeks or months. Important events include coronation of the sultan, betrothals, weddings, welcome parties honoring pilgrims from Mecca, victory celebrations, thanksgiving parties for successful accomplishments, political gatherings, city or town celebrations, and rituals for house-warming and recovery of the sick. It is taboo to play kulintang during the fasting month of Ramadan and during sad occasions such as death and calamities.

Dawak di Mong-o is a small wedding celebration of the Maeng tribe which is commemorated in the evening for those who belong to the lower economic strata of the community. Upon agreement of both parents of the couple, the crier of the community who is also one of the elders will call for a “Dawak” celebration. The womenfolk bring gifts from their bountiful harvest and the men play gongs. Performances of the takik (dance) and daing (song and dance) are presented. The Dawak finally ends with a dance by the newlyweds.

The tradition exhibits the spirit of cooperation, sharing, and harmonious relationship among people of the tribe. The offering of harvest by the women symbolizes sharing of blessings; they believe that the land will never stop sharing its blessings if it is also shared. The gifts of harvest are prepared so that everybody partakes of food during the festivities.

The synchronized and harmonious movements and steps of the daing and takik symbolize the spirit of cooperation and harmonious relationship among the people of the Maeng tribe.
