  • The European Commission Humanitarian Aid department has funded relief to millions of victims of natural and man-made disasters outside the European Union, since 1992.

    Aid is channeled impartially to affected populations, regardless of their race, ethnic group, religion, gender, age, nationality or political affiliation.

    At the onset of the conflict in Nahr el Bared (NBC) in May 2007, ECHO immediately mobilized funds and supported its partners to relief the displaced population victims of NBC conflict with food meals and parcels as well as other basic vital items, in Beddawi camp and other surrounding areas to the camp where most of the displaced families moved.

    From Relief to Recovery: 13.2 Million EUR disbursed to date responding to the basic needs since the beginning of the Nahr el Bared crisis.

    Humanitarian assistance aims at providing for displaced families:housing repairs and temporary sheltersrehabilitation of camp infrastructureimprovement of family incomes and livelihoodspsychosocial and health support

    ECHO shelter and infrastructure intervention started immediately after the return of population in August 2007, and focused on the adjacent areas.

    As a humanitarian donor ECHO's mandate is on rehabilitation rather than reconstruction and therefore ECHO will not intervene in the reconstruction of the "old camp". Other instruments of the European Commission are intervening for this purpose.

    TOOL KITS Reactivation of 307 micro businesses by distribution of professional tool kits and rehabilitation of work premises.

    Tool kits include professions as carpentry, vehicle mechanics, fishing, food trade, clothes trading, hair dressing, tailoring…

    CASH FOR WORKThe Cash for Work is a support strategy provided in the context of NBC. Due to the loss of businesses in the Old Camp and the difficulty to establish new businesses, provision of work opportunities against financial income was deemed appropriate, dignifying and relieving.

    Financial assistance to 1375 beneficiaries (e.g. 1375 families) through provision of a monthly work opportunity

    CASH FOR WORKWorks were selected by the community representatives and included”

    Light infrastructure maintenance (cleaning of streets, rehabilitation of public spaces as cemeteries and gardens)Community activities (as academic support for children, sewing school outfits for children, food packaging for targeted vulnerable families…)Gender coverage: out of the 1375 beneficiaries, 350 women from NBC were granted work opportunities (25% of total beneficiaries)
