HISTORY OF THE COLLEGE

Historically, in the pre-independence era, Ghatal P.S. and Chandrakona P.S. remained in Jahanabad (Arambagh) sub-division in Hooghly district and were included in Midnapore district in 1872. After the establishment of Ghatal sub-division in 1876, Ghatal P.S. and Chandrakona P.S. came under Ghatal sub-division and Daspur P.S. later on came under it in 1877. Ghatal and Chandrakona Municipalities established in 1869 and Khirpai & Ramjibanpur Municipalities established in 1876 came under Ghatal sub-division and Kharar Municipality later on established in 1888 came under it. Ghatal town as the headquarter of Ghatal sub-division became the centre of correspondence. Economically, Ghatal town developed through its river-way. Shilabati river, bisecting the town into two banks, confluences with Darakeswar at Bandar. The joint rivers in the name of Rupnarayan confeuences with Hooghly river at Gneokhali. As a river-belt town—it inherited a rich potentiality in agriculture, trade and commerce. lnspite of its rich potentiality, developed socio- economic condition, broad coverage with five municipalities, and thick population, Ghatal sub-division was deprived of an institution of higher education and learning. Immediately after independence, the people of Ghatal established a college at Birsingha. lt came to function but unfortunately after 2 years. ceased to exist owing to some dim reasons. The situation aggravated and pressed the demand for a college in Ghatal sub-division. To ful?l the aspiration and demand of the people, a number of stalwarts, academicians and social workers came forward with a view to utilising extremely the human resources available in the area and the dream came true through the establishment of the college on 14th August, 1961, in the name of Rabindranath Tagore in his birth centenary year. In fact, in its embryonic stage, the college was not built by the patronage and donation of a single man or a few people. On the other hand, it might be said, without exaggeration, that it was built by the generous help of all people of Ghatal sub-division. Since the establishment of the college it started to walk from its rough plain and reached the pinnacle of its glorious existence through the expert and esteemed leadership of Sri Rabindranath Das,—the founder Principal of the college. The college was recognised in 1961 by Calcutta University. It was enlisted u/s 2(f) and 12 (B) of the UGC Act. Since the establishment of Vidyasagar University, the college permanently came under its jurisdiction. The college has completed 53th years of its glorious existence and already earned reputation as one of the leading centres of advancement of teaching and learning in the area. It is the demand of the time that the institution should show excellence in teaching and learning in the emerging areas of science & technology.

THE LOCATION AND THE CAMPUS

Ghatal Rabindra Satabarsiki Mahavidyalaya is located in the heart of Ghatal town just by the side of Ghatal-Panskura Road with extensive transport and communication facilities. It is well connected with all the remote places of Ghatal sub-division through bus roads having very frequent local and express bus services and most of the hinterlands are not more than 2 hrs. bus journey. The college is only 14 klI1S. away from Birsingha, the sacred birth place of Pandit Iswar Chandra Vidyasagar. It is 30 kins. away from Panskura Railway Station and it takes two and half hours journey to Vidyasagar University to which the college is ailiated. Geographically, Ghatal Rabindra Satabarsiki Mahavidyalaya is surrounded by green-belt with trees and open ground. A spacious 10 acres campus providing approximately 43,000 sq. it. built-up areas_for housing the College Office, Professors’ Common Room, Class-rooms, Library, Science Laboratories, Boys’ & Girls’ Common Rooms, Students’ Canteen & Union Rooms etc. The faculties are very rich with expert Professors and the library is well equipped with more than 22,000 books. The college office is well computerised. The library is equipped with computer automation. There are departmental Library forn each department. There is PG Library.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES

Dissemination of knowledge is the primary object of the Mahavidyalaya.

The Mahavidyalaya aims at imparting liberal education which helps in developing

the total personality of the students and in bringing about all-round growth of their body and mind.

The most outstanding feature of the Mahavidyalaya is to instill such habits and

thoughts which will enable the students from village background to accept the best of Indian culture to become -worthy citizen of the country both materially and spiritually.

The Maha vidyalaya encourages and appreciates healthy and cordial. yet

disciplined, reciprocal relationship between the teachers and the students.

The Mahavidyalaya aims at empowerment of the girls of the locality through

education.

The Mahavidyalaya provides an opportunity of post-education employment. access

to PG level and competitive examinations and extends opportunity to backward classes.

This rule applied for all the cases of UG Part-I, Part-II & Part-III as well as for PG Course students. Students attended less then 75% of classes delivered, would not be allowed to attend the Internal Assessments as well as Vidyasagar University Examinations

SELECTION PROCEDURE FOR ADMISSION IN HONOURS COURSE : 1. Selection will be made strictly on Merit basis. 2. Merit point will be calculated by adding total marks obtained in the ‘best five’ subjects Higher Secondary / equivalent examination and the marks obtained in the subject in which the admission in Honours Course is sought.

Example :

Total marks obtained in the ‘Best Five’ subjects = 300

Marks obtained in the subject in which the admission in Honours Course in sought = 50

Total marks = 300 + 50 = 350

3. Merit point for admission in General Course will be calculated by marks

obtained in the ‘Best Five’ subjects at Higher Secondary / Equivalent Examination.

Girl's Hostel Newly constructed Girl's Hostel with full security and with full facilities with 200 bed capacities will be available for girl students from distance areas will be available from the session 2014-15 . Stadium College has a large stadium in the name of Sri Aurobinda, with 5 acres Green Land with Galleries and with protected walls for the development of games & sports , physical exercises, annual sports and practices of Physical Education students and carrate practice both for Girls & Boys. Genarators College has 3 40KV , 30KV & 10KV Generators for supplying electricity during anykind of disturbance of power supply. Students will not suffer from any kind of load shedding.

Statues To commemorate the Monishes specially as the college is established in the name of Rabindranath & as the college is located adjacent to Birsingha, the sacred birth place of Pandit Iswar Chandra Vidyasagar , one full figure and one half figure statues of Rabindranath & one full figure statues of Vidyasagar with beautiful decoration are erected in the midst of the college compound. Garden College has two beautiful gardens, maintained by NCC & NSS. Science Block A separate science block for all science departments with sufficient number of class rooms, well equipped laboratories are available for all sciences students.
