My Informational Interviewby Harriet Pryor

What did I choose?

I chose to interview a Lawyer by the name of Elaine Gerson.

She works at Aspen Valley Hospital, overseeing many jobs. She works as a lawyer for them, manages the nursing department, and oversees much of the business side of the hospital.

Her official title is: Elaine Gerson, Chief Clinical Officer and General Council of Aspen Valley Hospital.

Why not just choose a Lawyer?

While Elaine is a lawyer, she also has a lot of other skills. What’s her background?

MBA, RN, JD

Law is not just a “person in a courtroom”

Typical Day

“There isn't one.”

Oversees entire hospital’s day to day operation, as well as a lot of other things.

Represents the hospital, not the patient.

Malpractice suits.

Talking to employees… Respect for her, because of her background.

The Good things

“Practicing law is about doing the right thing.” “Not about winning.”

That’s the difference between courtroom lawyers and Elaine.

The ability to understand business so much more with a degree in law.

The money, as well as job security. Lawyers are always needed.

The Schooling

That’s the great thing about law, you can apply it to anything.

Need a bachelor’s in any subject, preferably business, or work related.

Law school is three years. “Socratic method, most terrifying thing in her life”

GOOD GRADES.

The Bad things

Not many…

Family.

“Burnt-out” people.

Personality

Listening skills are a MUST.

Someone who is able to assert themselves when needed.

“Courtroom Lawyers”

Takeaways

Law can be applied to everything.

Even if this isn't something that I will pursue as a full time career, I definitely want to go to law school.

A rounded background can help you in the future.
