The Minimax fire detection control panelFMZ 4100 is a compact function centrewith high availability, combining all the ad-vantages of modern micro-electronics.
The reliable and reasonably priced linetechnology is ideal for the monitoring oflarge areas. In addition, digital informationcan be transferred from each detectorthus enabling, amongst other things, indi-vidual single alarm identification. As a re-sult of this, it is possible to combine manysmall areas or rooms in only one detectorgroup. The activated detector can then beclearly identified on the LC display of thefire detection control panel.
The heart of the control panel is a microprocessor controlled analysis unit. Thisunit is responsible for all monitoring andcontrol functions and because of its in-built automatic interrupt control functionit can react to alarm signals without delay. The panel itself is monitored by a watch-dog timer which is reactivated each timedata passes through the cyclic runningprogramme. If the trigger impulse fails to
appear, the programme controlled alarmanalysis is interrupted in order to avoidany faulty functioning. In this case, thealarm evaluation continues to function bymeans of an emergency operational cir-cuit. In the case of interference, maximumonly one plug-in unit will fail to functiondue to the parallel operation of the diffe-rent analysis units. It is also possible toexchange defective components withoutany operational interruptions occuring.
The fire detection control panel FMZ 4100contains all of the essential performancefeatures of the earlier Minimax devices.Additionally, it fulfills all requirements of amodern comprehensive safety-informa-tion system with an integrated detectoridentification system and a large LC dis-play as well as having a report printer, sta-tus and intervention system and an inter-face to building adminstration systems. These features enable an exact evaluationof the incoming alarms so that prevent-ative measures may be carried out quickly.
Minimax's experience collected over manyyears in the field of evaluation and assess-ment of fire characteristics is to be foundin an extensive, error-tolerant analysissoftware. The software enables the sys-tem to differentiate between alarm signalsand spurious (parasitic) signals. By meansof a dialogue between the fire detectioncontrol panel and himself, the user is ledthrough the necessary operational phasesthereby ruling out, to the greatest possibleextent, all possibility of problems arisingfrom incorrect operating or stress influ-enced abnormal behaviour in the case ofalarms or disturbances.
The fire detection control panel FMZ 4100fulfills the highest safety requirementswhich are, of course, indispensable in thefield of fire protection. The control panelincluding the system's components are inaccordance with the valid guidelines, norms and regulations especially VDEand EN 54 and is approved by theVerband der Schadenversicherer (VdS,Association of German Property Insurers).
Fire Detection Control Panel FMZ 4100
Design variants
The fire detection control panel is a modu-lar extendable 19" unit assembly system.Even in its smallest basic design (GAB 32),it is capable of accomodating 2 x 32 firealarm groups and 32 primary controlgroups, besides the central equipmentsuch as the power supply unit, battery andmain alarm tripping.
In the larger model (GAB 128), the systemcan be extended to 3 x 128 groups bymeans of additional plug-in zone modules.
In this case, a common central plug-in unit(master system) takes over the overridingcontrol procedure for the otherwise au-tarkic plug-in zone modules (master-slaveprocess).
A total combination of 3072 groups can beobtained by joining together up to 8 stand-ing cabinets of the above type.
FMZ 4100 - GAB 32
is extendable, with each device having 32automatic and contact giving fire alarmgroups as well as primary control groupsfor the electrical monitoring and for theoperating of the important function alarmdevices such as alarm horns, release sol-enoids, etc.
FMZ 4100 - GAB 128
is extendable, with each device having 128automatic and contact giving fire alarmzones as well as primary control groups.
Each group is connected to the line cardvia line termination cards. Using one linecard, it is possible to supply, evaluate andmonitor 4 alarm groups for automatic firealarms, 4 alarm groups for contact giving firealarms and 4 primary control groups. A re-duced version can be supplied when only4 automatic fire alarm groups are required.
The alarm signals recorded in the fire con-trol panel are digitalized and are then, incomparison between normal condition andactual condition, compared with the pro-grammed values in the non-volatile mem-ory. In the case of negative results, eitheran alarm signal or an interference signal(e.g. wire breakage, short circuit, de-tector removed) is produced. A redundant, independent alarm circuit continues to con-duct the alarm even in the case of inter-ference or breakdown of the control sys-tem.Important alarm devices are connected tothe quiescent current monitoring of the pri-mary control groups.
Detector identification system(ZID-V)
This is a system component which func-tions independently from the analysis unit.It displays selectively the position and typeof the activated, defective or removed de-tectors.
The main component of this device is amicrocontroller which additionally and uni-directionally requests data from the detec-tor via a secondary network. A speciallydeveloped analysis software checks thedetectors signal for accuracy and thenevaluates it. The obtained results are trans-mitted asynchronously to the analysis unitvia FIFO-circuits where they are then dis-played on a comprehensive 8 x 40 figurealpha-numerical LC display.
The detector identification system, the al-pha-numerical clear text display and thereport printer complement each other andtogether form an important informationsystem thus enabling the quick introduc-tion of decisive and appropriate measures.
Extinguishing controlfor the fire extinguishing system
The system component extinguishingcontrol is used to control single and multi-
zone fire extinguishing systems. It func-tions independently from the other sys-tems of the fire detection control paneland therefore has its own display andoperating panel.
Each extinguishing zone is controlled andmonitored by an autarkical functioning ex-tinguishing control card. All the importantcomponents which are necessary for thetrouble-free functioning of an extinguishingsystem (e.g. detectors, release and alarm)devices are connected to the extinguishingcontrol system. In the case of alarm, theextinguishing control system registers andanalyses the detector signal, soundsthe fire alarm and activates the pre-pro-grammed control function as well as the fireextinguishing system.
Programming
The fire detection control panel FMZ 4100can be programmed for different applica-tions. For this purpose a special configur-ation programme has been developedwhich transforms the physical values ofentered characteristics (e.g. alarm thres-hold, short circuit threshold, etc.) into alanguage understandable for the micro-controller. In this way, the user has themaximum amount of flexibility which, forinstance, is required when extendingalready existing systems. Programming is greatly simplified by theuse of modern pull-down-menu-techni-ques and easy-to-understand input in-structions.
Secondary groups
The fire detection control panel FMZ 4100can be equipped with free programmablerelays in order to enable further alarm or-ganization, for example: the disconnectionof the air conditioning, the interruption ofthe manufacturing process, the opening ofsmoke vent flaps, etc. 2 break contacts(b-contacts) and 2 make contacts (a-con-tacts) with a maximum contact load of 2amperes are available for each relay. Theoperating and logical combination of therelays is determined for each specific sys-tem by means of the Minimax configu-ration programme. The standard functionsare as follows: operating tripped by alarm,pre-alarm and interferences as well as thedisconnection of fire detector groups.

Serial interfaces
The fire detection control panel FMZ 4100has standard serial interfaces for connec-tion to external equipment, e.g. alarm andgraphics reporting system or printer, aswell as enabling communication with asuperordinate administration system. Anadditional microcontroller circuit which hasbeen especially developed for the oper-ating of repeater panels as well as exter-nally situated control devices can exchangeinformation with the fire detection controlpanel via a serial interface. There are 768programmable outputs available for theoperating of the LEDs in a repeater panel.Additionally, the microcontroller has a seri-al interface for data transmission, e.g. for adesk-top printer. The fire detection controlpanel FMZ 4100 offers further interfacesfor fire brigade control panels as well as forthe so-called public main alarm. An alarmsignal can be automatically transmitted fur-ther to an external service, e.g. fire brigade,by means of the main alarm function. Addi-tional VdS standard interfaces are avail-able for the connection of fire detectionequipment from other manufacturers to theFMZ 4100 extinguishing control system.
Special applications
Spark extinguishing systemsThe possibility of realizing special applica-tions of fire detection and extinguishingtechnology were taken into considerationduring the development of the fire detec-tion control panel FMZ 4100. These spe-cial applications are, for example, sparkextinguishing systems for the wood indus-try, fire suppression systems for paintspraying plants as well as for the protec-tion of equipment in computing centres. Ifone takes the spark extinguishing systemas an example, it can be seen that this sys-tem can be connected to the control panelwithout any special or additional analyzingelectronics. All the requirements neces-sary for operating a spark extinguishingsystem such as adjustable extinguishingtimes for each extinguishing area, moni-toring of the extinguishing agent supply, electrical monitoring of heat tapes and leak detectors are to be found in the stan-dard programme of the control panel. It is,therefore, guaranteed that the evaluationof spark alarms as well as the operating ofthe automatic extinguishing system will becarried out with virtually no delay.
Gas detectorsA gas detector is an autonomous subsys-tem that can be easily integrated in theFMZ 4100 fire detection control panel. Owing to the increasingly complex chemi-cal processes used in industry, gas detec-tion at an early stage is often the main element of a safety scheme and is accor-dingly very suitable for combination withfire detection and fire systems. A displaycontinuously indicates the gas concentra-tions in the gas detectors. If the gas con-centration measured exceeds a preset li-mit, external equipment can be activatedvia secondary control lines. All measureddata is passed on to the FMZ 4100 whereit is recorded. This assures the traceabilityof events even after a lengthy period.
