IMPORTANCE OF RECRUITING:

In both September and October, local Scouting grew, serving more youth than last year.

Why does that matter? It matters because what you do as a Scouting leader or parent of

a Scout has real impact. You make a difference in the lives of each youth recruited and

that difference makes our community a better, safer place to live and raise our children.

Last year, one of the boys we recruited used skills learned as a Cub Scout to save a chok-

ing child. What if he had not joined Scouting? This year 31 Eagle Scouts have reported

4,240 hours of service in their Eagle Projects. What if those boys had never joined

Scouting? Each summer, thousands of merit badges are earned at summer camp. An in-

credible amount of education happening only for those youth who were recruited to join

Scouting.

If we recruit another 76 new youth before the end of the year, we will have growth over

last year. That is less than 1 youth per Scout unit. Think about the difference that one

Scout can make, and commit to recruiting one more youth for your Scout unit.

Remember also, Scouts who recruit a friend to join Scouting receive a free HOT SPARK kit

and the right to wear the official ‘Recruiter’ strip.

HELP SET THE RECORD AND BUILD THE ADVENTURES!

Have you accepted the challenge? We recruited 338 new Cub Scouts in September and October. Now we must deliver the promise of Cub Scouting and help each of these new Scouts to Build an Adventure! It all starts with their Bobcat badge.

Advancement is a great indicator of a Scout’s growth and development. As of this printing, 34% of our new Cub Scouts have already received their Bobcat award. Be sure all your new Cub Scouts are being recognized. Submit your advancement reports and let’s get to 100% .

Announcing a special incentive:

Every Boy Scout, that recruits a friend who joins Scouting will re-ceive a Recruiter patch and a Hot Spark, fire-starting kit.

Engage your Scouts now - it’s time to build an

adventure!

WHY RECHARTER?

Every year, every unit must re-apply to the Boy Scouts of America to continue as an

official Scouting unit. The process includes the Charter Organization’s approval of

leadership for the coming year. The membership roster is reviewed and updated,

ensuring that every youth and adult is properly registered. Annual registration

fee’s are collected to ensure every Scout receives the full benefits of membership.

This year, units must recharter in December. Any unit not rechartered by December

31st will lose it’s Charter and should not meet until the recharter process is com-

plete. This is because youth, adults, and Charter Organization are not covered with

insurance if the unit is not properly chartered. Packets with complete instructions

were distributed in November. The bulk of the process can be handled online

through Internet Rechartering which can be accessed HERE or from a link on your

MyScouting page. Any unit with questions about the recharter process should con-

tact their unit or District Commissioner:

THANK YOU JANE!

Council registrar Jane Payne is retiring effective December 31st, 2014.

Jane has been an exceptional member of our team, contributing to

our success over the years. Her dedication, patience, and diligence

will surely be missed. Her bright smile, great food and fun stories

will also be missed.

Jane started with the Muskingum Valley Council in October 2000 as

part of a work-study arrangement. In May of 2002 we hired her full-

time and she has served primarily as registrar and administrative

support. Her dealings with volunteers over the years have made her

one of the ‘faces’ of the Council Service Center.

We are planning a retirement reception at the Council Service Center Friday, Decem-ber 12, from 3-5 PM. Please mark your calendars and plan to attend to help us thank Jane for the 14 years she has served the council.

Please welcome Elaine Shoemaker to the Muskingum Valley Council Staff. Elaine will

serve as a Customer Service Representative, working primarily as scout store clerk

and assisting the service center staff as needed. She will work part-time throughout

the year.

Elaine earned her BS degree in Business Administration at Ohio Dominican Universi-

ty. She is a parent in Troop 158 and has served as committee member and Merit

Badge counselor. She is a leader of Girl Scout Troop 1862.

Please plan to stop by the service center in December to meet Elaine and welcome

her to the Muskingum Valley Council team.

SILVER BEAVER AWARD NOMINATIONS DUE DECEMBER 19th

The Silver Beaver Award is presented by the National Council, Boy Scouts of America, through the local council, to adult volunteer Scouters for their distinguished service to youth and their commu-nity. The Award is intended to acknowledge noteworthy service of exceptional character to youth by registered Cub Scouters, Scout-ers, Varsity Scouters, and Venturing Leaders within the territory under the jurisdiction of the local council. It is considered to be the highest award a Boy Scout Council can bestow upon a volun-teer Scouter. Click on the Silver Beaver Medal to download a nomination form.

Attention Webelos Leaders!

The Webelos-to-Scout Transition program is designed to improve the chances that a sec-

ond year Webelos Scout will become a Boy Scout. It has been successful in almost dou-

bling the percentage of Webelos who join a troop. The program will improve the chances

that an unsure 10 year-old will find the courage to give it a try. The heart of the program

is cooperation between a troop and a pack to schedule joint activities so that the second

year Webelos will get to know the Scouts and feel at home with normal troop activities.

The joint activities should not shove the Webelos Scout into full-fledged Scouting. Just

the fringes. This takes careful cooperation between the Webelos Leader and an Assistant

Scoutmaster assigned to this purpose. A Commissioner can often ease this process.

It is suggested that the second year Webelos Den can participate in the troop opening

and then retire to another room for their own program. Then they can come together for

the closing. On campouts there can be similar partial togetherness. This can continue

for most of the program year.

Ask The Advancement Committee! Q. What happens when the merit badge my son is working on is changed or discontinued? A. Once a merit badge is officially started (a blue card signed by the scout master and the instructions started with a

counselor) the scout can continue to work on the requirements that were in effect when he started the badge.

If you have a question regarding advancements or awards that you would like answered please email [email protected]

We would love to hear from you!

Dan’s Minute (Dan Beebe) P.R.A.Y. has announced a new award called the “Building Faith in Youth Award.” This award is designed to recognize

adults who have used the P.R.A.Y. programs to disciple young people and their families and to support the Christian Edu-cation program of the local protestant congregation. Counselors and Teachers of the P.R.A.Y. programs that stand out and have gone above and beyond the requirements of the program are ideal candidates. Nominations must come from a protestant church; the only signature required is the pastor’s.

This is a distinguishing feature of the new award.

Whereas most of the adult religious recognitions are joint recognitions on behalf of the church and a Scouting agency, the “Building Faith in Youth Award” is strictly a protestant church recognition. Congregations will now have a way of honoring their adult members who are non-Scouts and yet active in the P.R.A.Y. programs. The P.R.A.Y. Board of Directors wanted an adult award that could be used by a protestant church to recognize its own church members.

The emblem features a four-colored cross. The colors correspond to the four levels in the P.R.A.Y. series, i.e. God and Me (red), God and Family (yellow), God and Church (blue), and God and Life (green). The four colors converge into a point to create an “X” at the center of the cross. “X” is the first letter in the Greek word for Christ, and it is symbolic of how Christ should be at the center of our lives. The award package includes a medal that can be worn around the neck, a ¾” lapel pin, and an 8 ½” x 11” certificate.
