Tea in the Garden

With MomMoms. Most of us have them. They’re often the smartest, funniest and wisest teachers and role-models we could ask for. For those lucky enough to have a mother or maternal figure in their life, Mother’s Day is a time to celebrate that incredible gift.

This year, we’re honoring all the moms out there with a special Garden Party hosted in our Activities Courtyard on Sunday, May 9th, at 4 p.m.! A variety of floral teas will be served during the event, and our moms are encouraged to bring pictures of themselves and their kids to display during the event. Other light refreshments will be served including: Coffee, fresh fruit, and finger foods. In case of inclement weather, we will host our Garden Party in the Dining Room.

Our moms are encouraged to don their best floral-wear, or their brightest spring colors. Each mom will receive a Mother’s Day Card signed by the Mulberry Team, as well as a special spa-style present.

Flowers are as diverse as we are, and some are found in our favorite teas. Have you tried jasmine or hibiscus tea? Yummy!

Our flowers might not smell as

wonderful, but we made them with our

own two hands!

Flowers that are good all-year-round! Perfect

for a Garden Party!

Gone Golfing (With PAINT)Here at Mulberry, we like to keep our residents on their toes. So when Sara the Activities Coordinator says we’re going golfing ... well, that can mean anything. In THIS case, we gloved-up and got ourselves wrist-deep in paint! While nobody tossed or putted a golf ball into that 18th hole, we had a blast using vibrant colors to make some startling paintings!

Finger Foods: The Perfect Tea-Time SnackIs there anything more iconic than a tea party? And what better snack at tea than the small, delicious finger foods that are both simple and elegant. Below we’ve included a recipe for our favorite finger food, the cucumber sandwich!Ingredients

• 8 oz. cream cheese, softened• 1/3 cup mayonnaise (mayo with olive oil

is a delicious option)• 1 large cucumber: Peeled, seeded, and

thinly diced• 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder• 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt• 1/4 teaspoon pepper• 1 tablespoon fresh dill, chopped• Sliced white sandwich bread, about 16

slices• Sprigs of dill for garnish

Instructions

1. In a medium bowl, mix together the cream cheese and mayonnaise until completely incorporated.

2. Add garlic powder, salt, pepper, chopped dill, and diced cucumber. Spread on 8 slices of sandwich bread.

3. Top with sprigs of dill, then close sandwiches with remaining bread slices. Cut crusts from bread, forming square sandwiches. Cut each sandwich into quarters on the diagonal, creating 4 triangle mini-sandwiches each.

4. Serve with tea and enjoy!

These striking colors compliment each other and really bring this painting to life!

Golfing sure takes a lot of concentration!

Ruth wondered why we were using gloves

until we started!

The finished products! Everyone got a hole-in-one!

Dyeing Eggs ... With Whipped

Cream? You heard us right. This past April, Mulberry Gardens whipped out the whipped cream for an afternoon of fun, fluffy, fantastic fun with Sara and Jay in Activities! We want to thank Nurse Tammy for donating the six dozen hard-boiled eggs. We used every last one!If you’re curious how we did it, here’s the secret:

1. Have your hard-boiled eggs ready and cooled.

2. Soak them in white vinegar for 5-10 minutes (this helps the dye stick to the shell).

3. Apply whipped cream to a container (bowl, plate, to-go container, etc.).

4. Add drops of preferred food-coloring and swirl with a spoon.

5. When the egg is covered, let it sit for about 10 minutes.

6. Gently wipe off or wash in cool water for a few seconds.7. Store in the refrigerator for up to a week and enjoy!

Updates From the GardenStarted in the wee-early days of March, our Gardening Club is blossoming two months later as we begin to transplant our veggies from cups into pots. While we continue to prune, water and sun our sprouts, we wait patiently for Ohio to decide what weather to give us in spring. Now, as we enter May and the weather gets progressively warmer, we’ll begin the process of weeding the garden and transplanting outside in our raised beds. To celebrate, we hope to sit outside on the patio with glasses of iced tea or lemonade as we also soak up the sun.We look forward to giving more updates as our plants continue to grow and fill out. A sure sign that we are embracing new opportunities!

Olga got a kick out of making her beautiful pink and blue eggs!

She made so many, she was practically giving them away!

Spring means color, even if we got more of it on ourselves than the eggs!

Some eggs got a tie-dye effect that

blew us away!

Virginia is hard at work rolling her eggs in whipped cream!

Everything But the PaperPaper, canvases, walls ... here at Mulberry, our Activities Department has the bad habit of painting EVERYTHING but the paper. According to them, there was no better April Fools’ Day joke! In this case, we took up position at the windows with paint brushes in hand. While the outside is still deciding what weather it wants to give us, we decided to bring spring inside. So we painted everything from eggs to trees, and even flowers on the windows in our Dining Room! The residents loved both watching and participating, and we’ve gotten positive reviews from residents and staff as a whole regarding our colorful adventure.

Can’t Stop Us Now! We’re Havin’ a Good Time! The last year has brought out the creativity and resiliency in all of us, no matter the stress or barrier. So when this virus tried to stop our bingo, we did what we do best — problem-solve creatively! We packed up our bingo cards, bagged up our chips, and we made ourselves at home in the Dining Room. Now with one person to a table, we have plenty of arm-room as the numbers fly. With a much bigger venue, we’re able to remain safely distanced and still enjoy that much-anticipated game!More importantly than the game itself however, was the community surrounding bingo. For many residents, it was a time to socialize and catch up. There was as much laughter as there was bingo. Moving forward, we’re preserving that community aspect and doing it safely. We hope to see our residents in the Dining Room every Tuesday and Thursday, at 3 p.m., for bingo!

What’s NEW in News and Views?

The news. We all see it, read it or hear it. On our own or told by someone else. Lately, it feels like none of it’s good. Everywhere we turn, we’re bombarded by bad news.As we enter May, we want to assure residents and our community of the positive and otherwise important news stories that get overlooked. So join us by the fire in the Dining Room, at 10:30 a.m., as we read those stories, and maybe a little Dear Abby or some horoscopes. Get a cup of hot coffee and we’ll start the morning on a positive note. Maybe you have positive news to share, too. We’d love to hear it!Please see our activities calendar for more details!

Bringing Back the Birthday Bash

A birthday — the one day of the year we come together to celebrate the passage of time. Or, if you’re like us, you celebrate a birthday all month long. Because that’s exactly what we’re here to do!Join us in celebrating all of our May birthdays at the end of the month with a birthday BASH! We’ll host it in the Dining Room, and we ask that residents do sit one to a table to continue social distancing. We’ll have cake, refreshments, and we’ll be doing a LOT of singing. Let’s give a big shout-out to our Culinary Team who are in charge of making our cakes. Check our calendar for more information!
