FLAMEAWAY TURNS BACK CATHOLIC BOY IN SAM F. DAVISBy Alicia Wincze Hughest @BH_AHughes

Mark Casse admits he was hav-ing some second thoughts.

Despite the fact his charge Flameaway earned two of his three stakes wins on the dirt, the Canadian Hall of Fame trainer wasn't fully convinced life on the main track would be where the son of Scat Daddy ultimately made his best mark.

Under some prodding from owner John Oxley, Casse gave in to some Derby fever and put his chestnut colt in the $250,000 Sam F. Davis Stakes (G3) at Tampa Bay Downs against heavy favorite Catholic Boy. After watching Flameaway show his mettle, when he outdueled the Remsen Stakes (G2) winner in the stretch, Casse is happy to say the boss—as usual—knew best.

"I would say I was kind of wishy-washy about trying him on dirt, and Mr. Oxley said, 'Can we do it one more time?'" Casse said. "He is the boss, so I said 'of course.'"

One order of business Oxley may have in the near future is writing a check for $6,000 by March 19 in order to include Flameaway among the late nominees to the Triple Crown series. The Ontario-bred colt forced his way into the classic conversation when he fought back after being headed by Catholic Boy at the eighth pole to earn a half-length victory in the Davis.

Though Flameaway came into

the 1 1/16-mile Davis off a victory in the Kitten's Joy Stakes over the Gulfstream Park turf Jan. 6, his best outings were over a dirt surface. In his second start he captured the off-the-turf Skidmore Stakes at Saratoga Race Course Aug. 18. Two outings later he took an off-the-turf edition of the Dixiana Bourbon Stakes (G3) at Keeneland—a run that earned him a spot in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf (G1T), where he finished eighth.

Which surface is best for him may still have been up for debate, but one thing Casse was certain of was how much Flameaway loves a good fight. He backed that up Saturday, when he won the break to take the six-horse field through

an opening quarter-mile in :24.18, as Vino Rosso, Septimius Severus, and Catholic Boy bunched up behind him.

When he ran the half-mile in :47.73, Flameaway had Septimius Severus ranging up to his hip approaching the turn. That challenger threw in the towel once Catholic Boy surged up three-wide with his bid for the lead. Catholic Boy seemed poised to back up his 3-5 favoritism when he gained a short advantage in the final furlong, only to be thwarted by Flameaway unearthering a little more on the inside to snatch 10 qualifying points toward a spot in the Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve (G1).

"He's a fighter. If you've ever watched him, you've seen that," Casse said. "With the track playing a little fast today, I told (jockey) Jose (Lezcano) he was going to like this track. The one thing about him is, if he gets in a battle, he's going to win the battle. As long as the track is fairly firm, I think he'll run on anything."

Sent off at 10-1 odds, Flameaway earned another accolade, as he crossed the wire with his final time of 1:42.44 representing a new stakes record.

"I would say there is a good chance (to return for the grade 2 Lambholm South Tampa Bay Derby March 10), but it's something I have to talk to Mr. Oxley about," Casse added.

In his first effort since he won the Dec. 2 Remsen Stakes at Aqueduct Racetrack in his dirt debut, Catholic Boy likely kept himself on track for a start in the Xpressbet.com Florida Derby (G1) at Gulfstream March 31.

"I really need to watch the race again, but I thought it was a

big effort giving (as much as) six pounds," said Jonathan Thomas, trainer of Catholic Boy. "I'm happy, because it was a good effort. I just need to see it again and digest the race."

Vino Rosso came up for third, well clear of Hollywood Story in fourth. Navy Armed Guard and Septimius Severus completed the order of finish.

Bred by Phoenix Rising Farms, out of the Fusaichi Pegasus mare Vulcan Rose, Flameaway has five wins from seven starts with $434,834 in earnings. He was purchased by Oxley for $400,000 out of the 2016 Fasig-Tipton Saratoga Select yearling sale. BH

UNIQUE BELLA ROMPS IN SANTA MARIABy Jeremy Balant @BH_JBalan

For the first handful of strides in the $200,000 San-ta Maria Stakes (G2), it appeared as if Don Alberto

Stable's Unique Bella would get a challenge, but the big gray machine did away with that quickly.

Early in the 1 1/16-mile race, grade 2 winner Majestic Heat was at Unique Bella's neck, but by the time they went into the first turn at Santa Anita Park, the 1-9 favorite put a distance between herself and the overmatched challengers and never looked back.

"We thought we would be on the lead, but (jockey) Mike (Smith) was talking with me this morning, and we thought that if somebody went real hard or something like that, we'd just try to lay off the pace and see if she would relax," said winning trainer Jerry Hollendorfer. "But she got out to a lead and was handling the track really well."

The first quarter-mile went in :23.54, the half-mile went in :46.80, and in the backstretch the 4-year-old Tapit filly was in cruise control.

"She wasn't even trying," Smith said. "I was just talking to her—'whoa, whoa, whoa'—and she was just having fun.

Six furlongs went in 1:10.95 and it became clear in the final turn that any fight in the Santa Maria would be for the minors. A three-length lead became eight in the stretch and even geared down to a gallop in the final sixteenth, Unique Bella extended her lead to nine at the wire with a final time of 1:43.45. Last-out La Canada Stakes (G2) winner Mopotism passed Majestic Heat late in the stretch to pick up second.

"I really don't think we've seen how good she can be," Smith said. "The easy way she's doing things so easily right now is extremely impressive and I truly believe we haven't gotten to the bottom of her. There could be more, so I'm excited to see what the future holds for her. "

like a colt. She's strong and she's so athletic for as big as she is. When you can get a body like that going in that direction, that quick—and then she uses that stride and it's a deadly weapon."

Named the champion sprinter of 2017 after wins going short in the La Brea Stakes (G1), LA Woman Stakes (G3), and Santa Ynez Stakes (G2), Unique Bella's connections feel that she isn't a specialist going short or long.

"Most good horses can run both ways," Hollendorfer said. "Most of the good ones I've ever had—colts or fillies—can run short or long. I believe in that."

Bred in Pennsylvania by Brushwood Stable, out of the grade 1-winning Unbridled's Song mare Unrivaled Belle, Unique Bella now has seven wins from nine starts and $712,400 in earnings. She was a $400,000 purchase by Don Alberto out of the Keeneland September yearling sale in 2015.

"Jerry said she was going to run a big race, but not this big," said Don Alberto executive director Febrizio Buffolo. BH

Hollendorfer said after the race that a likely target next for Unique Bella would be the March 17 Santa Margarita Stakes (G1) at Santa Anita, but also mentioned the April 13 Apple Blossom Handicap (G1) at Oaklawn Park.

"We'll look at the next race here and try to point for that, then who knows what will happen after that," the Hall of Fame trainer said.

What may happen after that, if Smith has his way, could be a shot against males. While Hollendorfer never put his last super filly, Songbird, in against males, Smith said Unique Bella could be a unique case because of her size and power.

"There's some different things we can do with her because of her size," the jockey said. "She might step up with the boys at some point. She's not just a little one-gutted kind of filly. She's got a lot to her. She's built more

WORLD APPROVAL GETS IT DONE IN TAMPA BAY STAKESBy Alicia Wincze Hughest @BH_AHughes

The final win margin in the $175,000 Tampa Bay Stakes (G3T) was far closer than what was suggest-

ed on paper. The end result, however, was the exact outcome those close to Live Oak Plantation's World Approval were banking on seeing Feb. 10.

His veteran legs may have had to work harder than expected, but the reigning champion turf male still delivered the goods in his seasonal debut. After he rated well back off the early pacesetters in third, World Approval launched his trademark bid on the far turn, then fended off stubborn 12-1 shot Forge in the lane to win the 1 1/16-mile Tampa Bay Stakes by a half-length.

The Tampa Bay Downs turf course has served World Approval well in the past. Charlotte Weber's homebred Northern Afleet gelding was unbeaten in two prior starts over the surface, including his championship campaign-launching victory in the EG Vodka Turf Classic Stakes there in April.

With a planned trip to Meydan for the March 31 Dubai Turf sponsored by DP World (G1) on the agenda, trainer Mark Casse wanted to toe the line of having World Approval ready to run like the Eclipse Award winner he is during his 6-year-old debut, without

having to tap the full reserve of his fitness this early in the season. A less than fully cranked version of the 2017 Breeders' Cup Mile (G1T) winner was still too much for eight challengers, as the 1-5 favorite scored his fourth consecutive victory and sixth win from his last seven starts.

"He has been better than he was today, but hopefully this will set a nice foundation for him this year," Casse said. "He's a funny horse. He is not going to let you by."

Under confident handling from Hall of Fame jockey John Velazquez, World Approval raced about four lengths behind longshots Western Reserve and Le Ken as those two traded blows up front through fractions of :23.25 and :46.66 for a half-mile. Those hopes for an improbable upset were dashed when World Approval got his momentum rolling three-wide on the turn, but Forge kept things interesting in the lane with an outside run, which prompted Velazquez to keep his mount to task as they reached the wire in 1:40.66 over a course rated firm.

"He was coming off a long layoff and sometimes they need a race," Velazquez said. "But he's still a true champion and he put everybody away down the lane. I think, when we passed a mile, it was getting a little long for him with the layoff, and (the extra sixteenth) hit him right in the head a little bit."

Fire Away grabbed show honors, with Tasit and Noble Thought completing the top five. The race was marred when Doctor Mounty fell abruptly on the far turn, which caused Cheyenne's Colonel to fall over him. Both horses got up and ran through the wire and Tampa Bay Downs later reported that jockey Manoel Cruz—who was aboard Cheyenne's Colonel—was transported to a local hospital, while Doctor Mounty's rider, Antonio Gallardo, was evaluated in the jockeys' room.

With the victory World Approval improved his overall mark to 12 wins from 25 starts with a bankroll of $3,052,363. Out of the blue hen With Approval mare Win Approval, the gray gelding is a half brother to champion Miesque's Approval, as well as multiple graded stakes winners Za Approval and Revved Up. BH

HEART TO HEART EARNS ELUSIVE G1 WIN IN GP TURFBy Erin Sheat @BH_EShea

After seven unsuccessful tries in top-lev-el events, Terry Hamilton's Heart to

Heart finally earned a grade 1 victory in the $300,000 Gulfstream Park Turf Stakes Feb. 10 at Gulfstream Park.

Under the familiar guidance of jockey Julien Leparoux while having his way with the pace on the front end, the 7-year-old son of English Channel led at every call and held off Kurilov to win by a neck in the 1 1/8-mile test.

"The elusive grade 1! Watching him come back in and blowing as hard as he blew after that race, he gave it his all to win the race," trainer Brian Lynch said of his runner, who finished seventh after rearing at the start of the Ft. Lauderdale Stakes (G2T) Jan. 13. "He's an absolute deserved horse to have a '1' next to his name. It's nice to get it done here because he's always loved this track."

In Saturday's test Heart to Heart broke sharp and managed to secure the lead on the rail as the eight-horse field entered the first turn. Although One Go All Go tracked close in second with Hi Happy not far behind in third, Heart to Heart took control of the pace and ran through fractions of :24.15, :48.74, and 1:12.08 through six furlongs.

Around the turn for home, Heart to Heart started to open up on the competition, as the Chad Brown-trained Kurilov made a move down the stretch. With some asking from Leparoux, Heart to Heart dug in and held off a final effort from Kurilov to win. The final time was 1:47.64 over the turf rated firm.

Hi Happy held for third and One Go All Go was fourth. Channel Maker, Revved Up, Money Multiplier, and March completed the order of finish.

"He broke good and I got to the lead, and I was pretty comfortable the whole way," Leparoux said of the ride. "I'm glad the wire was coming, too, though because they were coming fast at the end. (Heart to Heart) tries, he tries hard, and he deserves that grade 1 win, and we finally got one. We're all very happy about it.

"Everybody loves Heart to Heart. He's a cool horse to be around in the morning, and he tries so hard."

The win was his 10th graded stakes win in a career

that's spanned from ages 2 to 7.Heart to Heart almost found top-level success last

fall in the Shadwell Turf Mile Stakes (G1T) in October at Keeneland, but came up a half-length short to Suedois after leading the field throughout. In his next start he weakened to finish 10th, behind eventual champion grass horse World Approval, after a quick pace in the Breeders' Cup Mile (G1T) at Del Mar.

The bay runner opened 2018 with a seventh-place finish in the Ft. Lauderdale Stakes, going 1 1/16 miles over Gulfstream's turf, after rearing at the start and attempting to settle in fourth.

"When they throw craps at you like that, it's in the back of your mind that it could happen again and that maybe he's not trying to go in the right direction," Lynch said of the Ft. Lauderdale run. "His works and everything indicated that (we should) put a pencil through that."

Bred by Red Hawk Ranch in Ontario, out of the Silver Deputy mare Ask the Question, Heart to Heart was purchased by Hamilton for $25,348 out of the 2012 Canadian Thoroughbred Horse Society Canadian-bred yearling sale. He earned a Sovereign Award as the champion 3-year-old colt in his native Canada in 2014, the year he came under Lynch's care.

With his win Saturday, he now has a 14-5-3 record from 34 starts and earnings of $1,737,290. BH

KANTHAKA CHARGES HOME TO TAKE SAN VICENTEBy Jeremy Balant @BH_JBalan

The fate of the $200,000 San Vicente Stakes (G2) was clear at the quarter pole.

The fractions on the tote board were blazing and only one horse was making a run from behind.

The black and gold silks of West Point Thoroughbreds, carried by Kanthaka, were streaking in the final turn, as the rest of the field looked like it needed a breather.

In fifth—7 1/2 lengths back after a first quarter-mile in :22 flat and seven lengths back after a half-mile in :44.25 set by dueling leaders Ax Man and Mr. Jagermeister—Kanthaka saved ground in the turn of the seven-furlong test, tipped out four-wide to scoot past his tiring rivals at the top of the lane, and powered away to win the San Vicente by 3 1/4 lengths under jockey Flavien Prat. The son of Jimmy Creed hit the wire in 1:22.62.

"He gave me a great run and he did everything right," Prat said. "He broke like a bullet, but then we had quite a lot of speed in front of us. So he sat really nicely behind the speed and made a really nice run around the turn. And after that it was done."

Nero, who was engaged in the pace early, before he dropped back to stalk in third, finished 12 lengths

clear of All Out Blitz for second, while Ax Man—the 2-5 favorite—came in fourth.

Ax Man's journey with the rail draw in the six-colt field was far from ideal. The Bob Baffert-trained Misremembered colt who won his debut by 9 1/2 lengths didn't break best, had to quicken to keep up with longshot Minnesota-bred Mr. Jagermeister in the chute, and got locked in on the rail for the duel, which clearly took its toll.

"I was completely screwed by (Mr. Jagermeister)," said Ax Man's jockey, Drayden Van Dyke. "He had me down on the rail and he was done at the three-eighths pole, but he kept me in tight. My horse got tired, but he never got a breather. I would completely throw this race out."

The setup was there for Kanthaka, but the other closer in the field, Kris' Rocket Kat, never made up significant ground and only beat Mr. Jagermeister to the wire.

"We thought we had a good chance, because we thought a lot of speed would be in there, which there was," said winning trainer Jerry Hollendorfer. "They went :22 and :44, so we thought we might have a chance to close them down, especially the way he broke his maiden. He got in trouble, and then still won, so that was pretty impressive."

Kanthaka earned his maiden victory Dec. 26 at Santa Anita—and at the same seven-furlong trip—despite steadying in the turn, to win by a neck. On Saturday he found no trouble and provided his owners with their 100th stakes win.

"This feels great," said Jeff Lifson of West Point Thoroughbreds. "It never gets old. … He responded well in the stretch and we knew he tries really hard, and he lived up to what we thought he could do. So we're really happy.

"We're hoping he can stretch out. We'll find that out, but I have a feeling we'll try two turns and will see how it goes."

Bred in Kentucky by Spendthrift Farm, out of the Noonmark mare Sliced Bread, Kanthaka now has two wins from three starts and $153,440 in earnings. He was a $140,000 purchase by West Point out of the Barretts March sale of selected 2-year-olds in training in 2017. BH

INSTILLED REGARD LOGS FINAL WORK FOR RISEN STARBy Jeremy Balant @BH_JBalan

OXO Equine's Instilled Regard got his final timed workout

for the Feb. 17 Risen Star Stakes presented by Lamarque Ford (G2) when he covered six furlongs in 1:13 flat Feb. 10 at Santa Anita Park.

The Arch colt will head back to Fair Grounds Race Course & Slots next week following his first graded score last time out in the Jan. 13 Lecomte Stakes (G3) at the New Orleans racetrack.

"He had a good work today—his last for Louisiana," said trainer Jerry Hollendorfer.

It was Instilled Regard's third work at Santa Anita since his 3 3/4-length victory in the Lecomte, which was his first start outside of California. He broke his maiden at third asking in October at Santa Anita, then came in third (elevated to second via disqualification)

in the Dec. 9 Los Alamitos Cash Call Futurity (G1) to wrap up his 2-year-old campaign. He was a $1,050,000 purchase by OXO Equine out of the Ocala Breeders' Sales March sale of 2-year-olds in training in 2017.

Also on the Santa Anita work tab Saturday was the Los Alamitos Futurity winner McKinzie (five furlongs, 1:00 1/5) and Solomini (four furlongs, :48 2/5), who

crossed the wire first in the Futurity but was disqualified to third for interference with Instilled Regard.

Another notable 3-year-old work Saturday came from Midnight Bisou. The last-out Santa Ynez Stakes (G2) winner and Longines Kentucky Oaks (G1) hopeful ran six furlongs in 1:17 3/5. BH

HARTNELL WINS C.F. ORR, SETS SIGHTS ON WINXBy Bob Kieckhefer

Hartnell has never defeated Winx in seven tries, but after his victory in the Ladbrokes C.F. Orr Stakes

(G1) at Caulfield Feb. 10, his trainer thinks the planets may be aligned for the eighth time to be the charm.

Godolphin's Hartnell, a 7-year-old son of Authorized, surged to the lead late in the 1,400-meter (about seven-furlong) Orr and held on to beat Single Gaze and Brave Smash in a blanket finish. Last year's Orr winner Black Heart Bart was scratched.

Several of the well-fancied runners were compromised by traffic issues in the Orr and at least half the field had a chance turning into the stretch, making Hartnell's first-up triumph all the more impressive.

It was his first run since he finished 20th of 23 in the Emirates Melbourne Cup (G1) Nov. 7 at Flemington, and the win off the bench gave trainer James Cummings a glimmer of hope that his old nemesis Winx might now be a vulnerable target.

In four of their seven meetings, Hartnell has finished second to Winx, who currently has 22 straight

victories. But Winx's return to the races has been postponed because her regular rider, Hugh Bowman, is serving out a careless-riding suspension. Rather than leg up a substitute for the planned season opener in the Apollo Stakes (G2) Feb. 17, trainer Chris Waller has opted to await the TAB Chipping Norton Stakes (G1) at Randwick March 3.

Hartnell's trainer said he reads the cards that, with the handy win under his belt and Winx coming off a layoff, the Chipping Norton might tilt in his charge's favor.

"We would have the fit horse on the scene," Cummings speculated.

"I won't lock in any plans today," he added. "But I know where my preference lies."

Winx has been idle since landing her 22nd consecutive win in the Ladbrokes Cox Plate (G1) Oct. 28. She has trialed twice in preparation for her autumn debut with another scheduled between races on the Apollo card and Waller said the 6-year-old Street Cry mare is doing well enough to afford him the luxury of waiting for Bowman's return.

Hartnell, who races in Godolphin blue, most recently faced Winx in the Longines Queen Elizabeth Stakes (G1) April 8 at Royal Randwick, where he

finished second, beaten 5 1/4 lengths. He reported eighth in last year's Chipping Norton, which was won by Winx.

Waller has tantalized the racing world with talk of bringing Winx to Europe later this year, perhaps with Royal Ascot at the center of a campaign. She also holds an entry for the Dubai Turf sponsored by DP World (G1T) on Dubai World Cup night March 31 at Meydan—an engagement that seems unlikely at best. BH

DONA BRUJA SHOWS NEW DIMENSION IN ENDEAVOUR WINBy Alicia Wincze Hughest @BH_AHughes

Don't ever let it be said that Dona Bruja is a mare who is

set in her ways. For her 6-year-old debut in

the Feb. 10 Lambholm South Endeavour Stakes (G3T), the venerable distaffer showed up with a new dimension to her game, which yielded some sufficient swagger in her step. In a departure from her usual off-the-pace ways, Dona Bruja took control of the 1 1/16-mile test shortly after the break and showed a wicked turn off foot coming off the final turn en route to a front-running, four-length victory in the $175,000 turf race at Tampa Bay Downs.

A group 1 winner in her native Argentina, Dona Bruja has carried that class over in her five U.S-based starts since joining the barn of Ignacio Correas IV, posting wins in the Old Forester Mint Julep Handicap (G3T) and Modesty Handicap (G3T) last summer as well as a runner-up effort in the Beverly D. Stakes (G1T).

Her outing Saturday was an emphatic statement, however, that she may have found a more effective style to showcase her ability. After leading the field through fractions of :23.92 and :48.02 for a half-mile, she had grade 1 winner and even-money favorite La Coronel moving up inside of Viva Vegas to try and threaten the pacesetter around the far turn.

The savvy daughter of Storm

Embrujado had none of that, cut the corner under jockey Jose Ortiz, and opened up on her younger foe before cruising to the wire for her third graded win stateside.

"I think (going to the lead from the start) was Bruja's plan, not our plan," Correas said. "I guess she does what she wants. She has so much talent. She's had a couple of unlucky trips, but hopefully this will be her year.

"I couldn't believe we were on the lead, but she broke sharp and she was fresh, because she hasn't raced in four months. I guess that's why she went to the lead. She's amazing, and I'm the luckiest guy to have her in my barn."

Dona Bruja covered the distance in 1:40.92 over a course rated firm and returned $4.80, $2.40, and $2.10 across the board as the 7-5 second choice. As Ortiz will attest, his mount brought some sharp legs to the table for her seaonal debut, as she had not run since finishing fourth in the First Lady Stakes

(G1T) at Keeneland Oct. 7."I was a bit nervous going into

the first turn on the lead, but she was pulling me, I guess because she was so fresh," Ortiz said. "I think she is going to move forward off this."

La Coronel, who was making her first start since she won the Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup Stakes presented by Lane's End (G1T) at Keeneland in October, held for second by a length over Truly Together.

"Our filly broke a little slow. If not, they probably would have been head-to-head," said Mark Casse, trainer of La Coronel. "She maybe was a little flat, but this is the beginning of the year. It's supposed to get better from here."

Bred by Ivan Roberto Gasparotto and owned by Dom Felipe, Dona Bruja improved her record to 11 wins from 15 starts with $536,568 in earnings. BH

OM BACK TO WINNING WAYS IN THUNDER ROADBy Jeremy Balant @BH_JBalan

It was a long time coming for K.B. Sareen's Om, but he finally

found his way back into the win-ner's circle Feb. 10 at Santa Anita Park.

The 6-year-old son of Munnings, who probably is best known for his victory over eventual Triple Crown winner American Pharoah as a 2-year-old at Del Mar in 2014, hadn't won in so long that his last victory slipped off his past-performance page.

In the $100,000 Thunder Road Stakes (G3T), however, the Dan Hendricks-trained chestnut took control of the race early and just held on late to win the one-mile race by a half-length. It was his first win since December of 2015, when he won the Mathis Brothers Mile Stakes (G2T) at Santa Anita.

Under jockey Flavien Prat for the first time, Om shot to the lead and when he completed the first quarter-mile in :22.58 he was in front by six lengths.

"Once entries were taken and we had the outside post, and there wasn't a dominant speed horse in there like there's been in all his races recently, we decided to just go ahead and get him on the lead, like he's very comfortable doing," Hendricks said.

The chestnut extended his lead to seven lengths through a half-mile in :45.75, and that's when his trainer got a bit concerned.

"I was worried more at that

half-mile pole than I was (after a quarter-mile), because he had gotten a little rank on Flavien after he got him out there that quickly," Hendricks said. "He got a bigger lead than you ever want to open up, but he got him to relax great down the backside."

Last-out Mathis Brothers Mile winner Bowies Hero pulled up to Om in the second turn and appeared to be ready to breeze by, but the front-runner never gave in on the inside and maintained a half-length advantage to the wire to finish off a mile in 1:33.54 on firm turf.

"He ran an incredible race," Prat said. "Once he got the lead, I was able to just let him go. (He) had great speed and I knew that once we got on the inside, he would just carry it through. He remained calm and was able to hold them off. He's incredibly fast and I just let him work."

Next Shares closed well from last in the six-horse field to finish third, a head behind Bowies Hero. Even-money favorite Blackjackcat, who raced in second early, faded late to finish fifth.

"He was flat," said Blackjackcat's trainer, Mark Glatt. "We're just gonna have to regroup here and make sure everything is OK."

Bred in Kentucky by Lavin Bloodstock, Bernie Sams, and William Farish Jr., out of the Tabasco Cat mare Rare Cat, Om became a millionaire with his Thunder Road victory and has a 6-5-6 record from 23 starts. Although he carried a 12-race winless streak into Saturday, Om placed in eight of those races and all of those placings were in graded stakes. BH
