ARROGATE TO RETIRE AFTER BREEDERS' CUPBy BloodHorse Staff

Defending Breeders' Cup Classic (G1) winner Arrogate, who is

training forwardly toward a start in the 2017 Classic at Del Mar, will re-tire to stud at Juddmonte U.S. near Lexington after his Nov. 4 Breed-ers' Cup bid, Juddmonte Farms announced Oct. 10. A fee will be released at a later date.

The 4-year-old son of Unbridled's Song worked a bullet five furlongs in 1:00 1/5 Tuesday at Santa Anita Park for Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert in preparation for his run in the Classic.

"Arrogate is training forwardly toward his next start in the Classic, as witnessed by his bullet workout today," said Juddmonte manager Garrett O'Rourke.

Arrogate is the winner of four top-level events, including the 2016 Travers Stakes (G1) by 13 1/2 lengths in track-record time in his

stakes debut; the 2016 Breeders' Cup Classic over two-time Horse of the Year California Chrome; the inaugural Pegasus World Cup Invitational Stakes (G1) by 4 3/4 lengths this January; and the Dubai World Cup Sponsored by Emirates Airline (G1) in March, where race

caller Terry Spargo described him as "the Man o' War of the 21st century."

"That's the greatest horse I've ever seen run," Baffert said of Arrogate.

The fleet gray looks to return to that winning form as he comes off a runner-up finish in the Aug. 19 TVG Pacific Classic (G1) at Del Mar and a fourth in the July 22 TVG San Diego Handicap (G2) at the seaside track.

The Eclipse Award winner for outstanding 3-year-old colt in 2016, Arrogate has amassed career earnings to date of $17,302,600 and earned the title of 2016 Longines World's Best Racehorse. Bred in Kentucky by Clearsky Farms out of the Distorted Humor mare Bubbler, he hails from the immediate family of Eclipse Award champion 2-year-old filly Meadow Star. He was a $560,000 purchase by Juddmonte from Clearsky's consignment to the 2014 Keeneland September yearling sale. BH

OBS YEARLING SALE'S NEW DATE WORKS WONDERSBy Ron Mitchellt @BH_RMitchell

The last time Ocala Breeders' Sales conducted a yearling sale, prominent trainer Mark Casse was in

Saratoga Springs, N.Y., saddling horses in that bou-tique meet's major graded stakes.

But with OBS rescheduling the sale to October from August, which not only competed with the Saratoga Race Course meet but also with the Del Mar race meet on the West Coast, Casse was one of the top buyers who helped push numbers for the Oct. 10 selected session well beyond the comparable session a year ago.

OBS reported 107 yearlings sold Tuesday for $9,841,400, compared with 148 yearlings bringing $5,573,300 at the 2016 selected session. The average price was $45,247, up 20.1% compared with $37,657 last year, while the median was $32,000, up 28% compared with $25,000 last year. The buyback percentage was 38.5%; it was 33.6% a year ago.

"We saw a number of people here we haven't seen here previously," said OBS sales director Tod Wojciechowski. "I think the change in the sales calendar helped that. Also, people brought us good horses. There is obviously a lot of competition in the upper end of the market as we've seen all year and that was no different here."

The session-topper was a Violence colt purchased by top Casse client John C. Oxley for $275,000. Consigned as Hip 126 by Richard Kent's Kaizen Sales, the dark bay or brown colt is out of Frank's Hope, by Pulpit, a winning daughter of grade 1 winner Silver Maiden and a half sister to graded stakes winner Dreaming of Liz. The colt was bred in Kentucky by Lantern Hill Farm.

"I thought there were some very nice horses," Casse said. "I thought the Violence colt was an exceptional colt. I bought some nice horses that have the chance to be any kind."

Casse, who plans to keep shopping for yearlings during the Oct. 11 OBS open session and at the Fasig-

Tipton October sale when he will also be prepping his seven or eight Breeders' Cup World Championship contenders in Kentucky, said he would not have bought any horses had the OBS sale still been on the August calendar.

"To me, this is so much better timing," Casse said. "Normally in August it is impossible for me to attend here."

The day's second-highest price of $240,000 was paid by de Meric Stables for Hip 96, a chestnut colt by More Than Ready consigned by Francis and Barbara Vanlangendonck's Summerfield, as agent for breeder Amy Tarrant's Hardacre Farm. The Florida-bred colt is out of Coal and Ice, by Tapit, a half sister to graded stakes-placed Blueridge Traveler.

"He's a beautiful colt, a stretchy horse," said Tristan de Meric. "Hopefully he will go on and do well. We thought he was a top horse in the sale and we're more than happy to have him."

De Meric also went to $230,000 for a daughter of Will Take Charge consigned by Stuart Morris as Hip 121. The bay filly is out of Final Heiress, by Forest Wildcat, a full sister to grade 1 winner and successful sire Wildcat Heir and graded stakes winner Forest Heiress.

De Meric, whose family's operation was leading buyer with five bought for $625,000, said there was

a lot to like in the selected session offerings and that the competition for the better lots was not unlike that seen in earlier yearling auctions this year.

"We've found some horses here we're pretty excited about and hopefully they will turn out in the long run," de Meric said. "When you find one you really like, you have to be ready to really pay for it."

With Summerfield the leading selected session consignor with 16 head sold for $1,123,000, Francis Vanlangendonck said the market was similar to the recent marathon Keeneland September yearling sale.

"The market isn't anything different than we saw at Keeneland," the horseman said. "The good horses are bringing plenty of money, but if you have vetting issues you are going to be in trouble, like everywhere else."

Vanlangendonck said moving the sale was a logical move, considering all the competition for interest from owners, trainers, and agents in August.

"We fought that battle in August for years and the bottom line was we could never get the people out of Del Mar and Saratoga," he said. "You have to have the product but the people have to be able to come, so I think the October sale will the way to go. It will only get better and better."

The OBS sale concludes Wednesday with a session that begins at 9 a.m. ET. BH

GLEN ELLEN VOCATIONAL ACADEMY THREATENED BY CA FIREBy Jack Shinar

The Glen Ellen Vocational Academy, Northern California's oldest Thoroughbred retirement and

rehabilitation facility, is perilously threatened by the one of the large fires raging this week in the Sonoma County region.

GEVA owner Pam Berg said she and her neighbors were forced to immediately evacuate by officials in the early morning hours of Oct. 9 as the Nuns Fire, as it is being called, burned rapidly thanks to powerful winds and dry conditions on the surrounding ridge. She and her volunteers were forced to leave behind the 34 horses currently on the 8 1/2-acre property, situated in the rural hills near Jack London State Park. Most of the animals are off-track Thoroughbreds.

"I was awakened by a neighbor's phone call at about 1 a.m.," Berg said Oct. 10. "I went outside and it looked like the entire ridge was in flames. It was terrifying."

Since then, most of the roads in the Glen Ellen area, including Highway 12, the main thoroughfare, have been closed. Berg, a former racetrack steward in Northern California who founded GEVA in 1995, has been staying with one of her volunteers in the nearby town of Petaluma.

By the morning of Oct. 10, the winds had receded, she said, but officials were maintaining strict control of the area surrounding the farm. Unfortunately, she said, the weather forecast calls for the winds to pick up again.

"Right now the conditions are perfect but if the wind starts up again, all it would take are some sparks," she said.

The farm's paddocks, she noted, are dirt, though there are many trees that could catch fire given the chance.

"I tried to get there this morning (to check on the horses), but the roads are

still closed," Berg said. "They wouldn't even let us walk in because of downed power lines. They told us it could be a number of days."

Before evacuating, Berg said she opened the paddocks, so the horses are loose and can get to a central pond paddock on the property. There is also a small lake on a neighbor's ranch they might reach if necessary. In the meantime, she said she feels helpless.

"That's all we can hope if the fire comes, they'll go to that safety zone," she said.

"We so appreciate the sympathy and prayers we've received. But if we can't get in, there's nothing much we can do—just hope the horses are smart enough to move to safety."

So far, the Nuns Fire has consumed more than 5,000 acres, making it one of the smaller blazes in the region, where upwards of 100,000 acres have been scorched so far, according to reports from Sonoma and the neighboring counties of Napa, Mendocino, and Lake. The fires have prompted Gov. Jerry Brown to declare a state of emergency.

Fifteen people have been confirmed dead, according to news reports, the majority in Sonoma County.

Meanwhile in Southern California, Los Alamitos Race Course has opened temporary stalls to horses displaced by Canyon Fire 2, the biggest fire to hit Orange county in nearly a decade. Fairplex Park is also hosting evacuated horses. BH

NUMBERS REGISTER FOR FASIG-TIPTON'S NOVEMBER SALEBy Ron Mitchellt @BH_RMitchell

The numbers tell the story of Fasig-Tipton's Novem-ber sale catalog:

Three champions.22 grade 1 winners.50 graded stakes winners.Six foals from the first crop of Triple Crown winner

American Pharoah.Together, they and the remaining entries in the

192 horses cataloged so far (selected supplemental entries will be taken through the Breeders' Cup World Championships) represent a stellar collection of bloodstock that will be offered to the general public Nov. 6, beginning at 4 p.m. in Lexington.

The catalog may now be viewed online, including Fasig-Tipton's enhanced catalog, with print catalogs available beginning Oct. 17.

"We're obviously thrilled with the quality of the catalog and think it's one of the finest collections of horses we've had the opportunity to present to the marketplace," said Fasig-Tipton president Boyd Browning. "The marketplace craves quality and we certainly have quality on offer this November."

The sale begins with 81 weanlings, including some by top stallions Candy Ride, City Zip, Curlin, Into Mischief, Kitten's Joy, and Medaglia d'Oro.

The Fasig-Tipton sale also will be the first public auction for foals from the first crop of Triple Crown winner American Pharoah, the Ashford Stud stallion who stood for a 2016 fee of $200,000 and has six in the catalog.

"There are some foals with spectacular pedigrees in the sale," Browning said. "It is particularly special for us to have the opportunity to sell the first American Pharoah foals since he is a Fasig-Tipton (sale) grad. We think there will be some fireworks with some of the weanlings we have by American Pharoah."

"American Pharoah draws a lot of buzz and a lot of people will want to see these babies by him," said Mark Taylor of Taylor Made Sales Agency. "I've seen a lot of his babies and I've really liked them. He's throwing really nice foals. People are putting the nice ones in the sale to ride that momentum, and I think anything you see by him hitting the market this year is going to be nice."

Other first-crop sires with foals selling at Fasig-Tipton include champion Honor Code, multiple grade 1 winner Carpe Diem, Breeders' Cup Classic (G1) winner Bayern, Belmont Stakes (G1) winners Tonalist

and Palace Malice, Breeders' Cup Mile (G1T) winner Karakontie, and Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile (G1) winner Liam's Map.

"This is a blockbuster year for new sires and there are a lot of nice first crop horses below him (American Pharoah)," Taylor said.

Following the weanlings will be the racehorses, broodmares, broodmare prospects, and stallion prospects.

"Nearly 80% of the racing/broodmare prospects and broodmares cataloged are black-type earners or producers," Browning said.

Topping this group are female champions Songbird, Tepin, and Finest City.

Cataloged as Hip 120 by Taylor Made Sales Agency as a broodmare prospect, Songbird is the 4-year-old daughter of Medaglia d'Oro who won 13 of 15 career starts—including nine grade 1 stakes—and finished second in the other two outings. A champion at ages 2 and 3, Songbird earned in excess of $4.6 million for Rick Porter's Fox Hill Farm.

"Songbird is obviously a highlight for us," said Taylor. "She's here on the farm and I go back and look at her and it literally makes my day better. She is stunning."

Consigned as Hip 130 by ELiTE, as agent for Robert Masterson, Tepin is being offered in foal to Curlin. A 6-year-old Bernstein mare, Tepin won grade/group 1 races in the U.S., Europe, and Canada and was voted champion grass mare at ages 4 and 5 and retired with earnings in excess of $4.4 million for Masterson. In addition to her stellar racing credentials, Tepin also is half sister to Vyjack, a multiple grade 2 earner of more than $1.4 million to date.

Finest City, a 5-year-old daughter of City Zip, was voted champion female sprinter for 2016 after winning the Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Sprint (G1) for which she is being pointed again this year prior to shipping to Lexington for the sale. Racing for Seltzer Thoroughbreds, the Pennsylvania-bred mare has earned more than $1.2 million for trainer Ian Kruljac, who has her entered in the Fasig-Tipton sale as Hip 171.

Included among the other grade 1 winners cataloged are Big World, Birdatthewire, Dacita, Illuminant, Miss Temple City, and Nickname, among others. Also entered in the sale is grade 1-placed American

Cleopatra, American Pharoah's full sister who is in foal to prominient sire Uncle Mo.

"It looks like a very strong lineup," Taylor said of the catalog, noting that November offerings can be skewed in some years in which there is a major dispersal. "When you have big dispersals, it brings unexpected depth to the market. For a normal non-dispersal year this looks like a good group of mares." BH

UNCAPTURED YEARLINGS ON DISPLAY AT OBSBy Ron Mitchellt @BH_RMitchell

A colt and a filly from the first crop sired by Canadi-an Horse of the Year Uncaptured are among the

horses to watch during the Oct. 11 open session of the Ocala Breeders' Sales October yearling sale.

The horses to watch list is based on factors that include pedigree and previous sale history (when applicable) as well as observations from buyers and consignors.

The Uncaptured filly (Hip 377), consigned by Janie Roper, is out of the unraced Bob and John mare Sassy Harper and is a half sister to Enterprising Lady, who ran second in the Florida Sire My Dear Girl Stakes and has earned $255,710 to date. The filly, bred in Florida by Milton Hendry, Beth Hendry, and Norman Hendry, is from the female family of multiple grade 1 winner Adored.

Named Captured At Sea, Hip 428 from Kim Harrison's Top Speed Farm is an Uncaptured colt out of the unraced West Acre mare Terri's Choice. The bay colt's half brother You Luckie Mann was a multiple stakes winner at Calder Race Course who ran second

in the Carry Back Stakes (G2). The colt was bred in Florida by Dr. Mary Beth Stanton and Opal Eileen Paul.

A To Honor and Serve colt named Tillman consigned as Hip 487 by Stuart Morris descends from an extended female family that includes leading sire Alydar and champion Our Mims. Out of the winning Quiet American mare All American Star, the bay colt was bred in Kentucky by Sangreal Investments.

Alpha, the grade 1 Travers and Woodward stakes winner whose first foals are selling as yearlings this year, is the sire of Hip 505, consigned by Destiny Oaks of Ocala on behalf of his New York breeder Sequel Stallions New York. Out of the stakes-placed Put It Back mare Back in the Shade, the colt is from the family of Ohio Derby (G2) winner and sire Spanish Drums and stakes winner and sire Crafty Drone.

Rounding out the sale's final session's horses to watch is Hip 600, a Kantharos colt who is a half brother to Fanny Freud, the winner of seven of nine starts included the Prioress Stakes (G1) and Beaumont Stakes (G2). Consigned by Francis and Barbara Vanlangendonck's Summerfield, the colt bred in New York by Anthony Grey is out of the winning D'Accord mare Frankly Fran. BH

EXCEED AND EXCEL FILLY BREAKS RECORD AT TATTERSALLSBy BloodHorse Staff

Trade continued in buoyant fashion on the Oct. 10 second day of Book 2 of the Tattersalls October

yearling sale, which had a daughter of Exceed and Excel become the highest priced filly ever to be sold at the sale when bringing 500,000 guineas ($689,903).

A total of eight lots brought 300,000 guineas ($416,000) or more on a day that saw turnover of 15,197,000 guineas ($21,073,892) for 203 lots sold. The average increased 12% to 74,862 guineas ($103,800) and the median rose 20% to 60,000 guineas ($83,200), while the clearance rate was 85%.

The highest price in Tuesday's session was a daughter of Exceed and Excel, who brought 500,000 guineas, becoming the highest-priced filly ever to be sold at the sale and the third highest-priced yearling in the history of the sale. It was a winning bid from Richard Brown acting on behalf of SackvilleDonald’s Alastair Donald that secured the filly from eventual

underbidder David Redvers, standing with Shiekh Fahad and Peter Molony.

Cataloged as Lot 927, the daughter of the stakes-placed mare Tiana is a sister to five winners from five runners including Beat The Bank, the winner of the Shadwell Joel Stakes (G2) last month. That runner is owned by King Power Racing, and Donald indicated that the filly was purchased on behalf of the same connections.

The sale also represented the highest sale price ever achieved by breeder Denniff Farms, who sell through Rosyground Stud.

"She has been really busy and had hardly been in her stable since she arrived, but this has exceeded my expectations," Fiona Denniff said. "It has been exciting watching Beat The Bank this summer, but I have always loved this filly.

"We bred the mare Tiana, sold her as a yearling to Darley, and then bought her back. We missed her the first time she went through the sales ring as we could not afford her, but bought her three years later."

Later in the day the bid board was lit up by a Dark Angel filly that brought 400,000 guineas ($551,922) when knocked down to Blandford Bloodstock’s Tom Goff.

"She is a lovely filly, a homebred from a good farm," Goff said. "She's out of a Shamardal mare from a fast family and the dream is she will make up into a Queen Mary (G2) filly."

O'PRADO AGAIN GETS FIRST WINNERBy Eric Mitchellt @BH_EMitchell

Grade 2-winning freshman sire O'Prado Again got his first winner

a long way from his home in Alberta, Canada.

Ghostly Who, a gelded New Mexico homebred racing for Sam E. Stevens and his son Sammy, won at first asking by two lengths in a 5 1/2-furlong maiden special weight Oct. 10 at Zia Park. He stopped the timer at 1:05.35 at odds of 7-1.

The gelding is out of the winning Grand Slam mare Grand Lely Drive, who the Stevens acquired in foal to O'Prado Again for $5,000 through the 2015 Fasig-Tipton February mixed sale. The mare was sold by Stuart Morris, whose father, Jeffry Morris, bred O'Prado Again under the name of his Highclere Farm.

Campaigned by Donegal Racing, O'Prado Again's best win came in the grade 2 Remsen Stakes at Aqueduct Racetrack. The son of El Prado—Leh She Run, by Pulpit, compiled a 2-2-2 record out of 11 starts and earned $187,406 before retiring to stud at

Darby Dan Farm. O'Prado Again stood for one year at Darby Dan before he was sold to Bar 17 Stable near Huxley, Alberta.

"We need younger stallions here in Alberta and he is a gorgeous horse," said Maxine Anderson with Bar 17 Stable. "He is also an El Prado who raced on dirt, and we need sires here that raced on dirt."

O'Prado Again has stood privately at Bar 17 Stable since 2015, but that may change next year, according to Anderson. She and her husband, Ken, are now shopping for a farm to manage the stallion. BH

Breeders' Cup Classic (G1) at Keeneland earned a 110 speed rating. Effinex was trained through the majority of his career by Jimmy Jerkens. He retired with $3,312,950 in earnings.

Out of the E Dubai mare What a Pear, Effinex hails from the family of Kentucky Oaks (G1) winner Blush With Pride, the dam of world record-price mare and broodmare of the year Better Than Honour. Effinex joins Central Banker and Teuflesberg at McMahon of Saratoga Thoroughbreds. Property of a syndicate, Effinex stood for $10,000 live foal in 2017 and will return at that price in 2018. BH

EFFINEX RELOCATED TO McMAHON OF SARATOGABy Eric Mitchellt @BH_EMitchell

Multiple graded stakes winner Effinex, who stood his first year at stud in 2017, has been relocated

to McMahon of Saratoga Thoroughbreds. The 6-year-old stallion is the leading earner for

2003 Horse of the Year and champion older horse Mineshaft. Having previously stood at Questroyal North, Effinex will be represented as the covering sire of two mares in the Fasig-Tipton Saratoga Fall sale Oct. 16 and three in the Keeneland November breeding stock sale.

"Effinex was an absolute stand-out on the track, first in New York at 3—and at 4 and 5, he won or placed in nine graded stakes nationwide, all grade 1 or grade 2 but one," Joe McMahon said. "Now that's a racehorse. We couldn't be more thrilled to have him at our farm."

Effinex, bred in New York by Dr. Russell S. Cohen, won the Clark Handicap (G1) at Churchill Downs, the Suburban Handicap (G2) twice at Belmont Park, and the Oaklawn Handicap (G2) for Tri-Bone Stables. He earned a 127 Equibase Speed Figure in his first Suburban victory, in which he beat Belmont Stakes (G1) winner Tonalist by a head. He also earned 115 ratings in the Oaklawn Handicap and his second Suburban win. Even his runner-up effort to 2015 Triple Crown winner American Pharoah in the

GREENPOINTCRUSADER RETIRED TO OCALA STUDBy Eric Mitchellt @BH_EMitchell

Grade 1 winner Greenpointcrusader, who captured the Champagne Stakes (G1) at 2, has been retired

to stud and will stand his first season in 2018 at Ocala Stud in Central Florida, where he is now available for inspection. A fee will be announced at a later date.

"Greenpointcrusader was one of the best 2-year-olds of his crop, as evidenced by fast wins against Saratoga maiden company and then the grade 1 Champagne Stakes at Belmont," said Ocala Stud's J. Michael O'Farrell. "His 94 Beyer Speed Figure in the Champagne was as fast as Uncle Mo, and it's one of the fastest in the last decade from what is a marquee race for 2-year-olds.

"Greenpointcrusader has a tremendous stallion pedigree, with two of his brothers currently standing stud in Kentucky, and he's the only grade 1-winning 2-year-old out of his highly accomplished dam. There's a lot to like about this horse, and we believe breeders will really like him when they see him."

The son of Bernardini is out of the blue hen mare Ava Knowsthecode (Cryptoclearance), who has produced four other graded stakes winners—grade 1 winner and freshman sire Justin Phillip, who won the 2013 Alfred G. Vanderbilt Handicap (G1) and placed in four other grade 1s; grade 2 winner Keyed Entry, and grade 3 winners

Successful Mission and Algorithms, who is a second-crop sire this year.

Bred by Oakbrook Farm in Kentucky, Greenpointcrusader was among Bernardini's top-priced yearlings of 2014. He sold to agent J.J. Crupi for $575,000 at the Keeneland September yearling sale and raced for owners St. Elias Stables, MeB Stables, and Brooklyn Boyz Stables. Trained by Todd Pletcher, the colt broke his maiden at Saratoga Race Course before taking the Champagne by 4 1/2 lengths in 1:36.25 and earning a 106 Equibase Speed Figure.

At 3, Greenpointcrusader was runner-up in the Lambholm South Holy Bull Stakes (G2) at Gulfstream Park. He retires with a 3-2-0 record out of nine starts and earnings of $473,300.

"Anthony Bonomo and I are big believers in Greenpointcrusader's future as a sire, and love his pedigree, look, and racing form," said co-owner Vinnie Viola of St. Elias Stables. "He ran extremely well as a 2-year-old and finished first or second in four of his first five races before injuries derailed his racing career. We intend to support him with a number of our own high-quality broodmares." BH

JIMMY CREED FILLY TOPS HERITAGE PLACE SALEBy BloodHorse Staff

A Jimmy Creed yearling filly sold for $30,000 topped the Heritage Place

annual Thoroughbred sale Oct. 8, as the Oklahoma City, Okla. event saw across-the-board increases over 2016.

Consigned by Ellen Caines as Hip 12 and purchased by Twisted Chaps Racing Stables, the filly bred in Oklahoma by Cowboy Stables was produced from the winning Birdstone mare Birdseye, a half sister to stakes winner Georgia's Joey and stakes-placed Sassy Skipper.

Heritage Place reported 52 horses sold for gross receipts of $267,150, an average price of $5,138, and a $3,500 median. The 22 horses not sold represented an RNA rate of 29.7%. In 2016, Heritage Place reported 73 horses grossed $226,850, resulting in an average price of $3,108 and a $1,500 median. With 26 unsold, the 2016 RNA rate was 26.3%.

During the yearling portion of this year's sale, 38 head grossed $229,800, with the average increasing 19% to $6,047 from the $5,076 average in 2016 for 33

GRADE 1 WINNER GRAND ARCH RETIREDBy BloodHorse Staff

Jim and Susan Hill's Grand Arch, winner of the 2015 Shadwell Turf Mile Stakes (G1T) and third that

year in the Breeders' Cup Mile (G1T) at Keeneland, has been retired to the Hills' Margaux Farm in Midway, Ky.

"He is enjoying his retirement," trainer Brian Lynch said. "He had a (minor) injury and we don't think he could have continued racing at the top level."

Grand Arch, an 8-year-old Arch gelding, closed his 29-race career in July with seven wins and earnings of $1,894,563. He made eight starts at Keeneland, racing there at least once a year from 2012-2016. He ran three times in the Shadwell Turf Mile and also won two allowance races at the Lexington track. His other graded stakes scores came in the 2014 King Edward Stakes (G2T) at Woodbine and the 2015 Fourstardave Handicap (G2T) at Saratoga Race Course.

"He certainly was a fixture in our stable and at Keeneland, and he is a very, very hard horse to replace," Lynch said.

Grand Arch was bred by Hunter Valley Farm and S. Hillen out of the El Gran Senor mare Bacinella. He was an $80,000 purchase by Indian Creek from Hunter Valley's consignment to the 2009 Keeneland November breeding stock sale, and sold for $120,000 from Indian Creek to the Hills at the 2010 Keeneland September yearling sale. ROY H REGISTERS ANOTHER TOP NUMBERBy Frank Angstt @BH_FAngst

Trainer Peter Miller figures a return by Roy H to his just-off-the-pace running style in

the Santa Anita Sprint Championship Stakes (G1) helped him regain his very best form.

After racing in third through the first half-mile of the Santa Anita Sprint, Rockingham Ranch and David Bernsen's Roy H rallied three wide into the stretch to seize the lead on his way to a one-length victory in the six-furlong test Oct. 7 at Santa Anita Park.

The effort earned Roy H the top Equibase Speed Figure of the Week at 126. Along with the 127 earned in his True North Stakes (G2) victory two starts back when he rallied from fourth, the 5-year-old More Than Ready gelding boasts a pair of top 10 ESFs in 2017.

In between those victories, Roy H posted a 114

when second in the Bing Crosby Stakes (G1). In that July 29 race at Del Mar, Roy H was just a half-length off the lead in second at the first call and grabbed a

contested lead at the second call. Miller figures Roy H didn't like being that close in the early going.

"He had rated in his first three wins, but in the Bing Crosby he was up on the lead, which I didn't particularly like," Miller said. "I like him stalking, third, fourth. I think that's his best style, so Kent (Desormeaux) got him to relax really nicely (in the Santa Anita Sprint) and I think moving forward, that's what we're going to try and do." BH

THOROUGHBRED MAKEOVER UNITES DIVERSE GROUP OF OTTB FANSBy Erin Sheat @BH_EShea

The 2017 Thoroughbred Makeover presented by Thoroughbred Charities of America had approx-

imately 300 horses compete in 10 different disciplines all in one weekend at one venue. From Oct. 5-Oct. 8, the Kentucky Horse Park was packed with off-track Thor-oughbreds and their owners, trainers, and fans from all walks of the equestrian world with the one thing uniting them: their passion for the breed.

Winner of the grand prize, the title of "America's Most Wanted Thoroughbred" and a share of the $100,000 that goes along with it, was Old Tavern, a 3-year-old unraced daughter of Peak Dancer who competed in the polo division. The filly's owner is 17-year-old Charlie Caldwell.

"I've never ridden a Thoroughbred with as good a mind as her. She's incredibly patient and calm about everything," Caldwell said of his mount.

Finishing second overall in the barrel racing competition, completing both runs in less than 20 seconds, were Storm Prospector and trainer Kelly Murphy-Alley. A 4-year-old gelded son of Cat Dreams, Storm Prospector finished unplaced in four starts for owner/trainer Tommy Short. Murphy-Alley said she saw him breezing and immediately knew he would make a good barrel competitor.

"I looked for a (mount for a) long time because I thought about doing (the Makeover) and I finally decided to when I found him because I was looking

something small, something compact, something a little more sickle hocked, something to work more under itself," she said.

The first-year Makeover competitor, who is a professional barrel racer and trainer based in Central Kentucky, was thrilled not only with the performance of her horse but with the entire Makeover competition.

"I've worked with Thoroughbreds but I've never bought my own and trained, so I decided to buy my own and give a whirl this year," she said. "This is my first year. I love it, it's fantastic."

Grade 3 winner and former Team Valor runner Speechify competed in dressage with professional sport horse trainer Sarah Berkowitz, who received the 7-year-old Harlan's Holiday gelding from Team Valor's Briana Mott.

"Bri knows that I'm super particular and anal about the horses so she called me and here he is," Berkowitz said of the gelding, who has an esophageal condition and consumes an all-liquid diet. Although she knows he's a special case, Berkowitz is hoping to find a new home for Speechify.

"He's been pretty good, he has only about two months of formal training," the Kentucky-based trainer added. "He had another surgery done in August so he's only been cantering since Sept. 1. He's a little bit on the green side for competition, but he was really well behaved in the dressage."

One competition that always draws significant attention is freestyle, where participants show off the trainability and talent of their horse in a way that isn't covered in the Makeover's other nine disciplines.

Showcasing their "western dressage" skills were Las Vegas-based trainer Lindy Christensen and Intaxication, a 6-year-old winning Stormello gelding who was retired from racing through Neigh Savers Foundation.

Although she didn't have a mount, jockey Megan Fadlovich attended the Makeover to watch the OTTBs that she helped find new homes. With more than $4.7 million in earnings riding mostly at Mountaineer Casino, Racetrack & Resort, the rider had some time off after being injured in a spill at Presque Isle Downs so she decided to come to Kentucky for the weekend.

Fadlovich works to move retired Thoroughbreds into new homes and said she's seen a change in demand for OTTBs since the creation of the Makeover.

"I think the Makeover has caused a giant increase in people interested in (OTTBs) and wanting to participate in this event," she said. "My only worry is what happens. Are people going to continue getting OTTBs every (year)?"

Her motivation for helping horses comes from her love of the breed.

"I just want more people to enjoy off-the-track Thoroughbreds," she said. "I feel like they all have a purpose, and I feel like racing sometimes isn't it. Let's find something else that they can do." BH

As for her discipline of choice, the trainer said it was a combination of her background of dressage and not wanting to overwhelm the horse, who has only been through four months of training so far after recovering from a bowed tendon.

"We decided to go with (western dressage) because the training to western dressage is so similar to that of traditional dressage that it's not that hard for me to switch over basically just tack," she said. "The lessons that he's learned in western dressage are all lessons that coincide with traditional dressage."

Another first-timer at the Makeover, Christensen enjoyed her trip, although she had a long 2,000-mile journey.

"This is my first year here and it's been a lot of fun," she said. "We've had mountains to climb. He's been a good boy throughout."

FIRENZE FIRE STRIKES FOR POSEIDON'S WARRIORBy Alan Portert @pedigreeconsult

When Firenze Fire—winner of a Monmouth Park maiden and Sanford Stakes (G3) in his first two

starts—faded from contention to finish fourth in the Hopeful Stakes (G1), it's likely most dismissed him as an early season speedster unlikely to be involved in the major 2-year-old races going forward.

Firenze Fire wasn't to be dismissed, however. Stretching out to a mile in the Oct. 6 Champagne Stakes (G1), the son of Poseidon's Warrior rallied from 10th to score by a half-length. In the process he ran a Beyer Speed Figure of 90, the joint-second fastest—behind only multiple grade 1 winner Bolt d'Oro—of any colt this year, and the clear second at a mile or more. Firenze Fire's form received another boost when Free Drop Billy, second in the Sanford, took the Claiborne Breeders' Futurity (G1).

Although he retired to stud relatively inexpensively in Florida, where he stood at Pleasant Acre Stallions for an advertised fee of $6,500 in 2017, Poseidon's Warrior was an accomplished sprinter. A stakes winner in all three seasons he raced, he improved significantly with age, and it was his 4-year-old career that turned him into a stallion prospect. Dispatched at odds of 36-1 for the the Alfred G. Vanderbilt Handicap (G1) at Saratoga Race Course, he scored by a pair of necks from Justin Philip and Emcee, with classic winner Shackleford and another grade 1 winner, Jersey Town, down the field. He proved his Vanderbilt form no fluke when he finished third in the Vosburgh Invitational Stakes (G1) in his next start.

Poseidon's Warrior is represented by 51 first-crop foals, 19 of which have started, and three of which are winners. Firenze Fire is the only black-type earner.

Poseidon's Warrior was a speedster, as was his sire, champion sprinter Speightstown. As a stallion, Speightstown has primarily been a speed influence, but has been represented by some that stretched out at the

highest level, notably Jockey Club Gold Cup (G1) victor Haynesfield; Travers Stakes (G1) dead-heater Golden Ticket; Seek Again, successful in the Hollywood Derby (G1T); and the Belmont Derby Invitational Stakes (G1T) scorer Force the Pass. So it's not surprising that a Poseidon's Warrior 2-year-old can win at a mile.

Firenze Fire is the first foal from his dam, the Langfuhr mare My Every Wish. The granddam, Mille Lacs, won a maiden at Churchill Downs at 2, and ran fourth in the Golden Rod Stakes (G2). A daughter of Unbridled and the stakes-placed Lear Fan mare With Every Wish, Mille Lacs produced two other winners in addition to My Every Wish. She is a sister to illustrious producer Oatsee. Broodmare of the Year in 2011, Oatsee is the dam of five stakes winners, headed by Shackleford, the Alabama Stakes (G1) captress Lady Joanne, and graded scorers Afleeting Lady and Baghdaria.

Firenze Fire's fourth dam, Amo, is a half sister to the top-class 2-year-old Tappiano, a daughter of Fappiano, the grandsire of Oatsee. Amo's dam, Taminette, was half sister to four stakes winners and a full sister to group 1 winner Known Fact. More relevant to Firenze Fire, Taminette was a half sister to Secrettame, the stakes-winning dam of Gone West, Firenze Fire's great-grandsire. Since Gone West was by Mr. Prospector out of a daughter of Tamerette, and Firenze Fire's granddam was by great-grandson of Mr. Prospector out of a great-granddaughter of Tamerette, Firenze Fire has horses from the same sire line and family, close up in the top and bottom of his pedigree. 2017 SIRES BY LIFETIME AEIListed below are the top 10 leading sires by lifetime Average Earnings Index (AEI) through October 9, 2017. Only active stallions in North America (excluding stallions that were exported prior to the 2011 breeding season) with at least 150 named foals of racing age are included. CI indicates the average earnings of progeny produced from mares bred to one sire, when these same mares were bred to other sires.

Listed below is a comparison of statistics for only North American racing with all available statistics through October 9, 2017. Only stallions that stand, will stand, or stood in North America (excluding stallions that died or were exported prior to the 2011 breeding season), and have runners in North America are included..
