Dear Friends,

We are delighted to present Mother Caroline Academy and Education Center’s (MCAEC) 2014-2015 Annual Report. This past year’s achievements would not have been possible without your generous financial support and enduring commitment to MCAEC’s families.

With a commitment to Boston families with limited financial means and resources, Mother Caroline Academy (MCA) continues to provide a high quality education for girls and young women. MCA students aspire to be doctors, engineers, designers, artists, business owners, educators and community leaders. Through an excellent education in a safe environment, our students develop the academic skills, resiliency, self confidence and strength of character needed to prepare themselves for lives of purpose.

Knowing that education has the power to transform lives, our families are invested in setting their daughters on a path of promise that leads to high school, college and a life of opportunity. With no public or other tuition-free option for girls in the City of Boston, MCA opens a door to lifelong opportunity for girls and their families.

Investment in MCA girls is an investment in the community and future workforce of Greater Boston. We are now witnessing the first generation of alumnae who graduated from MCA during the school’s early years that hold positions within a variety of fields including education, marketing, finance, high tech, social services, health care and retail. In this report, we have highlighted the achievements made by a number of these talented women.

We look forward to your continued support. We encourage you to visit the school in the coming months. Mother Caroline Academy and Education Center is truly a remarkable place.

With Gratitude,

Diana Monteith Ed HudnerBoard Chair Head of School

Investing in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math

With an introduction provided by Bill and Heather Maffie, MCA’s 6th Grade Class Sponsors, MCA established a partnership with i2 Camp, a program designed to engage middle school children in the fields of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). This summer MCA served as one of four i2 Camp host sites within the City of Boston offering weeklong programs to middle school students from local neighborhoods. Eight scholarships were provided for MCA students to attend i2 Camp.

Additionally, i2 Camp staff have trained an interdisciplinary team of MCA teachers to deliver a comprehensive, weeklong STEM program in November to 7th graders. The goal is to extend MCA’s math and science curriculum to include more hands-on project-based learning that includes the use of technology and incorporates the tenets of engineering design.

MCA’s Mentoring Program – Going the Distance for MCA Students MCA students graduate with strong academic skills and self-confidence. However, the transition to high school and college can present significant challenges. MCA graduates often attend high schools that are private, much larger than MCA and located in communities distant from their homes.

MCA’s Mentoring Program supports current students as well as high school alumnae as they transition away from MCA, adapt to private high school culture and rigor, and undertake the college application process. The commitment by both the mentor and student is from 7th grade through 12th grade. Achievements from this year include:

• Fortymentorspairedwithcurrentstudents and MCA alumnae

• FourMCAalumnaereturntoserveasmentors

• ReaccreditationbytheMassachusettsMentoring Partnership at the Partner Level

• JoinedtheMayorofBoston’sambitiouscitywide Mentoring Movement to recruit at least 1,000 mentors over the next two years

• MCA8thgrader,SophiaGaines,winsthe Mayor’s contest for the Mentoring Movement’s logo

Launch of Women Crush Wednesday’s Women Crush Wednesday’s follows the Social Media Movement #WCW with a twist. At MCA the girls recognize women in the Greater Boston Community who are “crushing it” across all industries and paving the way for future female leaders.

On Wednesdays, an invited woman leader spends the first hour of the day with MCA 6th – 8th graders by telling her story, answering questions, and engaging students in discussions about their futures. Some of the speakers include Andrea Campbell, a Boston attorney running for Boston City Council, State Senator Linda Dorcena-Forry, Rica Elysee, CEO Boston Naturals, Felicia Okonkwo, Co-Owner of SistAct3 Catering, Sharon Reilly, Executive Director for Cradles to Crayons and Elizabeth R. Thornton, Babson College Professor and Author “The Objective Leader.”

Highlightsfrom2014-2015SchoolYear

Parent Engagement

This year marked an expansion of efforts to more fully engage parents. In partnership with parents, we have revitalized the Parent Council, created “parent space” within the school, held monthly dinners with the Head of School, identified programs that build on The Parenting Journey, and increased opportunities for parent volunteering. Parents with daughters in the Mentoring Program have had more opportunity to develop relationships with their daughters’ mentors.
