FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK

Kia ora koutou Another successful busy week! Thank you to all students and staff involved in our annual information and open evening for incoming Year 6’s. It was a packed house! I was very proud of our student leaders, our rock bands and Dance NZ Made students, who did a stunning job! Well done team. Congratulations to the Dance NZ Made troupe, who won the Year 7/8 section of the regionals. The group are off to National’s in September. It was wonderful to see our past students from Mount Maunganui College place first and second in the Year 9/10 section. Next Thursday, we are hosting prospective students and their families for Open Day. This is an informal opportunity to have a look around the school. Come and see us in action! Come to the office and you will be given a tour guide to show you around. Currently, we have a very small group of individuals who are testing boundaries at present. These students are deliberately wearing incorrect shoes to school, baseball caps and hoodies, to and from school. Trust your parental instincts - students are not allowed to wear non uniform items. At MMI we wear our uniform with pride at all times, this includes to and from school. We are happy to issue, lend or for you to purchase correct uniform from us. We have some uniform items available in our office. We will ask your child to remove non uniform items. This weekend we have seven netball teams who are playing off for semi-finals and finals at Harbourside netball. Well done ladies, an excellent season finale. Also, our Open Water Polo team head to Auckland for the Winterfest tournament. A big thank you to the parents/community members who are enabling our students to compete in this event. Good luck to you all. Ma te wa Ms M/Whaea Lisa

SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY AT MMI

Mount Maunganui Intermediate provides a great opportunity for students to participate in Science/Technology Fair, the staff make it an enjoyable experience for the students. For one house, Rangiwaea, it was compulsory for students to enter a project, but for the rest of the school it was optional. From week 1 last term, students were working extremely hard to complete either a Science Fair project, in which a student would research a theory or investigate a certain topic, or a Technology Fair project, in which a student could either invent a whole new item, or improve something that already exists, but it has to be a product that would have relevance in someone's life. At the start of term 3, four adult judges, went into the school hall, where all the finished boards were in position to be judged, and gave each board a score out of 25, and then if the board was really good, the judges gave it a yellow sticker. Afterwards, the judges took away all the boards that did not have a sticker, and judged the yellow sticker boards again, to find a First, Second, and Third placings, in year 7 science, year 7 technology, year 8 science, and year 8 technology. SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY AT MMI continued 15 students will represent our school at the Science Regionals on the 24 and 25 August. There was also an award called the “People’s Choice Award”, where there is a box in the school hall, with little slips of paper next to it. Students can write the name of their favourite project out of the displayed boards, and then after the deadline for viewing came, the votes were tallied up and the winner was found. This will be announced at assembly Friday 18th. Written By Kaia Cassaidy

YOUNG INNOVATORS AWARD Earlier this year, two teams of 6 students from Mount Intermediate, competed in a competition called the Young Innovator Awards, or YIA. For this competition the teams had to create a Rube Goldberg machine, that had to water a plant and come up with a customer that needed their plant watering but couldn't, without help. The teams worked hard on weekends to get their machines done in time, before a due date. All that work paid off. Both of our teams made it into the finals. The year 8 team came 1st out of 15 intermediate teams and the year 7 team got 2nd. Written by Ben Goodjohn

ATTENDANCE/LATE LETTERS

We are constantly monitoring all attendance and lateness for students at MMIS. This is because attendance at school is a strong indicator of success for students in the school system. MOE (Central North Region) expectations are that all students attend 94% of the school year. This includes time off school for medical, funeral and other justifiable reasons. Every 6 weeks, we notify all parents/caregivers whose child has dropped below 90% attendance, as we are legally obligated to notify you if your child’s attendance falls below MOE expectactions. 90% attendance across the whole school year, equates to your child missing 4 full weeks of school. This is a sizable chunk of time away from their learning. We realise that there are instances where your child may be away for justifiable reasons, which you have notified us of. The first letter is only to inform you, so you are aware of how your child’s attendance rate is tracking. Please do not be offended. We are simply trying to keep you informed and to ensure your child attends regularly or does not start a pattern of low attendance. As the year progresses, we undertake many check-ins regarding the attendance of all students. If your child’s attendance continues to decline or drops below the 90% mark, we will again contact you via mail. Students who continue the decline, or have exceptionally low attendance rates, will be referred to our truancy officer. He will assist in helping you and your child return to regular attendance at school. Should your child have an ongoing medical condition we need to be aware of, which affects their attendance, please notify Jenny Pearson ([email protected]) so she can place it on your child’s attendance record. You may be asked, as per MOE guidelines, to obtain medical certificates for our records. Lateness: The same system applies for our late students. In every 6 week block, our expectations are that no students should be late more than 2 times, as this is a barrier to learning and makes settling into class routines very difficult. A child who is late to school disrupts not only their own learning, but the teacher’s lesson, as well as other students and the office staff. Letters are sent home to those who are late 3 or more times in each 6 week block. Please assist your child in arriving at school with plenty of time to spare before the bell (8.45am).

ATTENDANCE/LATE LETTERS continued

From the Ministry of Education: Keeping our children and young people attending school and engaging in education has always been important. Attendance and engagement in school improves employment, social and life chances and reduces the development of antisocial behaviour and youth offending. Poor attendance, or truancy is a clear indicator of disengagement from education and is often a precursor to students leaving school early without the education and qualifications they need to succeed in today’s world. Truancy can often lead to other more serious misbehaviours that may set young people on an unsatisfactory life pathway with poor social and economic outcomes. The school should have systems to monitor student attendance, identify poor attendance and/ or truancy and provide support and assistance to improve attendance and commend students’ changed behaviour. Some students need extra support to keep them engaged in education. Schools and parents need to work together to enable these students to stay engaged at school. Truancy incidents or poor attendance patterns are best addressed as soon as they begin to emerge, rather than being left until the patterns become entrenched and more difficult to turn around. Under the Education Act 1989, parents are legally obliged to enrol their children in school from the age of 6 to 16, and to ensure that their children attend school every day the school is open for instruction, unless there is a justifiable reason for their absence (e.g. illness, family bereavement). It is an offence if parents refuse or fail to do so.

Please note that at MMI, we care about providing the very best educational outcomes for our students. Attendance is part of a successful school picture and our systems are intended to be informative and to keep the lines of communication between school and home, open. If you have any concerns about our attendance systems, please contact either Jenny Pearson ([email protected]) in the office or our Deputy Principal, Melissa Nelson ([email protected]).

SPORTS INFORMATION [email protected]

ELITE BASKETBALL – ROTORUA 28th JULY The lads were all excited – a day off school and a trip to Rotorua, in the new van, to play basketball. It doesn’t get much better than this. It’s tough being in a team of 12 when only five take the court at a time and we all want our turn on court so everyone was hungry for playing time. Games were 12 minute halves, with a running clock, so the aim was to quickly get some points on our board. Our first game was against Te Puke Intermediate where we executed our press with aggression, which turned into fast breaks. Cameron Skilton was on fire, making 14 points for the game. All the team contributed at both ends of the court and we won quite easily 52-7. Next up was Otumoetai, who are well-drilled, with some tall timber in the mix. We stayed even, most of the first half, and at half-time it was 9-7 to us. With some tough defence on the press by Will Fraser and Oliver Taylor we managed to pull away and win 17-12. Our 3rd game was against Rotorua, where we spied a load of rep players and ‘Yau Ming’ – at about 6’2”, he made our boys looks small! Jacob was still collecting some quality rebounds amongst this bigger side. We managed to use our press and patience on offence to be just ahead at half-time. However, the Rotorua boys came on with a half-court press which dazzled us and we struggled to score for a phase. It was tough to recover in a short space of time and we went down 37-27. Well done to Connor and James who clocked up some great outside shots in this game. Rotorua went on to win our grade and beat Tauranga Intermediate in the final. Our final game was against Gisborne Intermediate – a big and physical team who played a different style of basketball than we’d come up against all year. With the whistle going a lot for fouls, time was of essence and it was 8-8 at half-time. Hats off to Benjamin Lindsey who held his own against some physical boys. With the urgency to score, we came out with our press and caused some quick turnovers to finish ahead 20-14. All in all a great day of basketball. A big thanks to our coach, manager, parents and supporters. The team are all looking forward to AIMS games now. The boys’ basketball team is: Kyran Standen, Austin Cashmore, Cameron Skilton, Jacob Hall, Breiton Tuwairua, Benjamin Lindsey, Connor MacDonald, Oliver Taylor, Seth Whinney, Will Fraser, James Walker and Kameo Wagner.
