FROM THE PRINCIPAL Kia ora koutou,

Well team, we have almost made it. The school year has finished calmly, with staff and students still working hard.

Next week, we have a number of events and celebrations. Our thank you morning tea is Tuesday morning, followed by our formal prize giving’s on Wednesday morning. Our leaver’s assembly will be held on Thursday morning. School finishes on Thursday, at 12.00 pm.

As a leader, I believe that my role is to grow people. We work strategically to develop, grow and build our staff. At the end of this year we are going to farewell a number of staff, who have won promotions, or are moving into different sectors. Although, sad for us, it is exciting to be involved in the support and development of careers.

We say congratulations, thank you and farewell to:

Mr Bassett - has won a leadership position at Kaimai School, teaching year 6-8. Ms Havill - Deputy Principal, has won a position with the Ministry of Education, as a Student Achievement Function Practioner. Mrs Jensen - has won a specialist teaching position at Tauranga Intermediate, teaching digital technology. Mrs Robertson - has been on maternity leave this year and has chosen to move into part time work to spend time with her young family. Miss Tierney - has won a secondary position teaching English and Spanish, at Te Puke High School. Mrs Toy - has resigned from her team leader position. She plans to spend more time with her family. Mrs Yorke - has won a position teaching in the Year 7/8 Learning Commons, at Papamoa College. Whaea Ange Webster - has won a position in the primary sector, at Te Akau Ki Papamoa. Rose from Kiwi Can - will be studying to be a teacher at Canterbury University.

In 2016, we have carried additional staffing, so despite a number of staff who are moving on, we have only two new teachers starting. Mrs Debbie Howell is an experienced teacher and Mathematics Curriculum/Numeracy adviser who has worked in New Zealand and overseas. She has recently returned from Abu Dhabi. We are also joined by Miss Hannah O'Kane, who joins us from Western Heights Primary School in Rotorua. She has strengths in Literacy, Numeracy, ICT/e learning and Te Reo.

2017 The predicted roll is 613 for the start of next year. Although, believe it or not, there are still enrolments coming in. The BOT has funded a 21st class, to lower class numbers. We have 20 students enrolled in our Te Reo bilingual programme. We would love to add some more students into this class, so if your child has an interest in Te Reo and Tiikanga, this could be the perfect class placement for them. This will be a year 7 and 8 composite class. We will have 11 year 8 classes and 10 year 7 classes.

All homeroom teachers will be in new or refurbished classes, with new furniture in 2017. Over the term break the school will be repainted, down pipes replaced and the back carpark extended. The new toilet block will be opened in term 1. We also plan to refurbish the last 2 remaining old classrooms, rooms 24/25, in the New Year.

We would like to thank our Board of Trustees and all of our staff for the tremendous amount of work that you all have done over the year. We are extremely fortunate, as a community, to have such a dedicated team.

A big thank you to all of the wonderful community volunteers, coaches, canteen, tutor reading, crossings and parent helpers. We are so fortunate to have such an amazing community. You make such a difference to the lives of our children and to our school. A big thank you to Joy Luker and to Anna Beck, who have convened our parent support group for the past two years. We cannot thank you enough.

To our students and families who are moving on to college, we wish you all the best. We know that you will love the Coastal Values and continue to be successful in your new place of learning.

To our year 7 students, the bar lifts again. We look forward to you stepping up and being wonderful year 8 role models.

Finally, to those families who have journeyed through MMI with one or more students. If you are leaving us for good, we bid you farewell. We know that the intermediate years seem fleeting, but, it is such a time of change and growth for your pre-teens. We know that you will all move on, but we hope that you never forget.

Student Leaders for 2017 We have been working on the appointment process over the past few weeks. Students shortlisted were nominated by both students and staff. These students and their families should be exceptionally proud of being identified by students and staff alike, as a positive role model. We are very proud of you all and the positive start to Intermediate that you have had.

From here, the leadership candidates have completed a CV, planned and given a presentation, answered interview questions and given an impromptu speech. The calibre of this year's potential leaders is very high. We will announce the Head Boy, Head Girl and Deputies at the Year 7 assembly on Wednesday. We encourage the shortlisted applicants not to be disappointed, but to be very proud of themselves and what they have achieved and to continue to seek leadership roles on the council, house leaders, in sport and other cultural and arts endeavour’s.

Mihi Kirihimete me nga mihi nui mo te tau hou. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from the MMI team.

Lisa Morresey Principal

NEWS FROM THE PSG Firstly we want to say a HUGE

Thank you

To all the people that have given up their time this year to help us raise money for the PSG. We have raised a total of $18,500, which we are very proud of. We have been trying desperately to spend it all so our kids get the benefit as soon as it is raised. Here is a list of things we have spent that hard earned cash on: New sickbay beds & fridge $ 4,005 Plants around the school $ 1,000 Classroom equipment $ 1,150 Timber for Picnic Tables $ 2,255 Year 8 Social & Gifts $ 2,046 Replacement iPads $ 5,400 Books for Library $95 Principals Kia Maia Gifts $ 500 Welfare Fund $ 1,000 Artwork for new house flags $ 400 We have had a great time being the co-ordinators of the PSG for the past two years, and we are thrilled to announce we have found some new people to lead the PSG into 2017.

Thank you Erica Mitchell and Jacqui Herrick for putting your hands up to do this rewarding job. We know you will be great, and that you will get heaps of support from our school community.

SCHOOL UNIFORM DONATIONS This is, of course, completely voluntary, but if you have no need for your MMI school uniforms, we would greatly appreciate them being donated to the school. This year, we raised over $5,000 from our second hand uniform sale. Year 8 students are allowed to wear mufti to school on the last day if they donate their uniforms - bring them to the school canteen before school next Thursday and get a free juicie. Again, thanks everyone for all your support over the past two years, and bye from us.....
