    1.2 THE MRXI

    The MRXI 10B AS E -T H U B a nd MRXI-2 10B AS E -T H U B a re 10B AS E -

    T a nd 802.3 complian t repea t ers t ha t a llow s expa nsion of existin g

    802.3 net w orks using a va riety of media . The tw o hubs a re ident ica l

    except for t he phy sica l connections for port s 1 th rough 12. The MRXI is

    equipped w ith a 50 pin Ch a mp conn ect or, w hile th e MRXI-2 provides

    t w elve RJ -45 conn ect ors. The MRXI support s out -of-ba nd a nd in -ba nd

    S imple Netw ork Ma na gement P rotocol (S NMP ) complia nt netw ork

    ma na gement . Out-of-ba nd m a na gement for t he MRXI is provided by

    MRXI /LM. The MRXI is support ed by severa l in-ba nd n etw ork

    ma na gement tools including: C a bletr on S yst ems Remote L ANVIE W/

    Windows , and SP ECTRUM .

    1.3 THE MRXI/LM

    The MRXI/LM is a m enu driven, int egra t ed netw ork ma na gement t ool

    th a t permit s ma na gement a nd cont rol of th e MRXI. MRXI/LM can be

    used t o:

    D isplay curren t MRXI st a t us and st a t is t ics for the MRXI

    netw ork port s

    Define community names and access pr iv ileges

    D ia gn ose n et w or k pr oblem s.

    The MRXI is a n S NMP complia nt device tha t permit s sett ing

    commun ity n a mes for your MRXI. The Community Na mes fea tu re

    serves t w o purposes:

    As a secur ity fea t ure tha t def ines access pr iv ileges for SNMP

    requests from SNMP ma na gement sta tions

    C om mu nit y n a m es let y ou t o d esig na t e t h e n et w or k

    ma na gement w orksta tions th a t w ill receive a larms from t he

    MRXI.

    You ca n a ccess MRXI/LM t hr ough a ma na gement t ermina l conn ect edt o the 9-pin C onsole port on t he rea r pa nel of th e MRXI. The console

    port support s a D igita l E qu ipment Corpora t ion, VT200 or VT300

    series t ermina ls or P C emu la t ion of t he VT200 or VT300 t ermina ls.

    ma na ge multiple MRXIs from a single E th ernet w orkst a tion. With

    Remote LANVIE W/Window s, you can view s t a t ist ics for your MRXI,

    both numerica l ly a nd gra phica lly, using dyna mic bar a nd pie cha rts

    a ndperforma nce gra phs. You ca n a lso ena ble a sta tist ics logging a ndreport ing function t ha t w ill log MRXI st a tist ics t o a report fi le for

    fut ure r eference.

    termina ls, configuring t he ma na gement console and connecting th econsole cabling.

    2.1 LOCAL MANAGEMENT CONSOLE

    MRXI/LM is a ccessed by a t ta ching a ma na gement console at th e DB -9

    CON S OLE port on t he r ea r pa nel of t he MRXI (see Figure 2-1). The

    console conn ect ion support s a D igita l E qu ipment Corpora t ion VT200

    or VT300 series termina l or P C emula t ion of one of th ese t ermina ls.

    2.2 CONSOLE CABLE CONFIGURATION

    A single fema le DB -9 recept a cle provides a Console int erfa ce to t he

    ma na gement termina l. Depending on your specific termina l, one of tw o

    cable configur a t ions (9 pin t o 25 pin or 9 pin t o 9 pin) is used for t he

    conn ect ion t o t he MRXI Console port . Figure 2-2 shows t he pinout for

    bot h ca bles.

    GETTING STARTED

    This cha pter expla ins t he convent ions used by t his ma nua l to describe

    each of th e screens a nd comma nds a va ila ble w ith MRXI/LM. It a lso

    describes using t he keyboa rd a nd th e initial st eps required t o access

    MR XI/LM.

    3.1 USING THE MANAGEMENT KEYBOARD

    The MRXI/LM screens a re a rr a nged w ith pert inent n etw orkinforma tion filling much of th e displa y a rea a nd severa l menu

    select ions a cross t he bott om. To select a menu option or a lter a field,

    use the keyboa rd a rrows (up, dow n, left, a nd r ight) to highlight th e

    desired item. Only fields tha t ca n be cha nged ca n be highlighted.

    In corr ect en t ries (field va lue exceeded, etc.) a re blocked a nd r esult in

    a n a ppropria te error message (refer t o Ch a pter 6, MRXI/LMMessages).

    To ma ke a m enu selection:

    3.2 UNDERSTANDING THE SCREENS AND COMMANDS

    The hub a nd loca l ma na gement a re cont rolled by entering par a meters

    directly int o th e fields present ed on t he termina l display a nd by

    selecting comma nds from m enus present ed a t th e bott om of each

    display screen. The inform a t ion in t his ma nua l covers a ll of th e

    a va ila ble display screens a nd is present ed using th e follow ing forma t

    conventions:

    3.3 MRXI/LM SCREENS

    The MRXI/LM pr ovides int era ct ive screens t ha t let you a lter

    inform a t ion a nd select MRXI/LM functions from a series of

    ma na gement screens. Figure 3-1 show s t he pat hs betw een screens.

    3.4 ACCESSING LOCAL MANAGEMENT VIA TERMINAL

    To use MRXI/LM, t he console mu st be conn ect ed a s d escribed in

    Cha pter 2, Attaching the Console. To a ccess MR XI/LM:

    1. I f not a lrea dy powered on, pow er on the MRXI.

    2. Turn on pow er to th e termina l . After a brief (a pproxima tely 5

    seconds) w a rm up, th e P a ssw ord S creen a ppea rs (see Figur e 3-2).

    3. I f you a re not using the passw ord fea ture of MRXI/LM or i f you

    ha ve not yet a pplied your own pa ssw ord, press Return .

    If you ha ve a pplied a pa ssw ord known only to you, ent er tha t

    passw ord now, t hen press Return.

    rea dy for opera t ion (see Figure 3-3). The m enu comma nd MAIN is

    highlighted.

    If a n incorrect or inva lid pa ssw ord is ent ered, th e pa ssw ord promptrema ins on t he screen, a llow ing you to ent er th e correct passw ord.

    3.5.1 Cable Configuration

    Loca l Ma na gement is a ccessed by a n R S 232 ca ble a va ila ble from

    Ca blet ron S yst ems. This cable conn ect s th e modem t o t he MRXI

    Console port.

    ra te must be set to the ra te of the modem. U sing a t ermina l , set t he

    ba ud r a t e a t t he D evice/P ort S creen. The defa ult sett ing is 9600. Referto Cha pter 4 USING THE DEVICE/PORT INFORMATIONSCREEN for informa t ion on cha nging th e display ed pa ra meters.

    After verifying t he ba ud ra t e proceed a s follow s:

    1. P lug the 9 pin end of the ca ble into the port labeled CONSOLE on

    th e MRXI.

    2. P lug the 25 pin end of the ca ble into the 25 pin RS232 port on themodem.

    3. Turn modem on. The modem must be set for Auto Answ er an d DC D

    5. Enter the Pa ssword . Any Superuser password (ass igned a t the
