ANNUAL MEETING

Photo Caption: VINS bird presentation at the 2011 Annual Meeting

This year, celebrating our 25th anniversary, we are humbled by the generosity that has allowed this organization to prosper and serve our community. Stowe Land Trust now owns 5 properties in Stowe and holds 24 conservation easements on public and private land that represents the community’s conservation values. Stowe Land Trust’s members have enabled us to protect places like Bingham Falls, Wi-essner Woods and Cady Hill Forest. These special places define the sense of place that has become so important to our community and serve as the foundation of the local economy.

At this year’s Annual Meeting we gratefully acknowledge the foresight and dedication of our present and former board members who vol-unteer their time and strengthen the organization through their com-mitment to conservation.

We invite you to join us in the celebration at Trapp Family Lodge. We will hear from author and retired Middlebury professor, John Elder about conservation, community, and affiliation with the land, and learn of Stowe Land Trust’s plans for the future. Please see enclosed invitation for event details.

John Elder

John Elder taught English and Environmental Studies at Middlebury College from 1973 until his retirement in 2010. Among his special interests as a teacher were American nature writing, English Romanticism, modern poetry of earth, and Japan’s haiku tradition. He also devel-oped a strong interest in service-learning, through classes focused on the future of the nearby town of Starksboro and on the challenges and opportunities now facing the farms of Addison County. In 2008 he was named Ver-mont Professor of the Year by the Carnegie Founda-tion and the Center for the Advancement and Support of Education. Upon his retirement from Middlebury in 2010 the John C. Elder Chair in Environmental Studies was established there.

His last three books, Read-ing the Mountains of Home, The Frog Run, and Pilgrim-age to Vallombrosa, combined discussion of the Vermont landscape with memoir. He was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship in support of his forthcoming project on com-munity-based conservation in a time of climate change. He has also been active in statewide programs to protect our natural environment, serving on the boards of the Vermont Land Trust, the Center for Whole Communities, and Vermont Family Forests.

WANT AN EASY WAY TO HELP STOWE LAND TRUST REACH OUT TO MORE PEOPLE?

Recycle this newsletter by passingit along to a friend or neighbor and encourage them to become a member.

Fall beckons us with chilly mornings and the smell of wood smoke. As the maples and beech put on their showy colors, it trig-

gers our instincts to tidy the cord wood, put gardens to bed and take stock for the coming cold. Fall is a time for reflection and acknowl-edgement, a time for celebrating the bounty of summer and appreciating those who have helped us succeed.

This year we cel-ebrate 25 years of land conservation. We are proud that SLT has been a leader in our com-munity’s conserva-tion efforts. The support of our members over the last 25 years has helped SLT conserve productive farms, diverse wildlife habitat and recreational opportunities that are unique and special to Stowe. This year has been no exception. Protecting Cady Hill Forest was the culmination of lots of hard work and years of passionate engagement by people who care deeply about the future of Stowe. We are inspired by everyone who supported the

project and made Cady Hill Forest the crown-ing achievement of our 25th year.

As we look to the next 25 years, we are in-spired by the challenges and opportunities for private land conservation. Maintaining a robust stewardship program, conserving the most vi-tal parts of our landscape, and building a strong foundation for SLT’s future will be our prima-

ry goals. Central to these goals is the intrinsic con-nection between our spectacular landscape and our community. To that end, we are hon-ored and excited to welcome Pro-fessor John Elder as featured speaker

at our Annual Meeting. Known for his lively classroom discussions at Middlebury College on controversial environmental topics, John has also explored the deeper, more serene connec-tions between nature and community. His mes-sage brings to light the inseparability of our liv-ing, breathing landscape, and its connections to our every day lives.

This year’s annual meeting will be held at Trapp Family Lodge on November 4, 2012, and will celebrate those individuals and partners who’ve made our work a success. We look forward to hearing from Professor Elder and sharing the evening with the people who make land conser-vation possible, so we hope to see you there!

Stowe’s Natural LegacyFor 25 years, SLT’s goal has been to ensure that the Stowe area continues to be a strong and vibrant community, where the natural landscape plays a central role in the economy, where development respects historic traditions and natural resources, and where there are accessible open spaces and abundant wildlife habitat.

If you share this vision, you can make the conservation of Stowe’s exceptionally scenic landscape and rich ecological resources a vital part of your own legacy by making a planned gift to Stowe Land Trust.

Whether it is remembering Stowe Land Trust in your Will, setting up a Charitable Gift Annuity, or other type of planned gift, this is a great way to ensure that future generations will continue to enjoy the unique character of Stowe. It is also an important way for you to maximize the financial rewards of your philanthropy. These gifts are structured to help you realize the full range of the tax and income incentives provided by law to encourage your charitable giving.

For more information visit our website: www.stowelandtrust.org/support/planned-giving, or contact Stowe Land Trust Executive Director, Heather Furman at [email protected] or 802.253.7221.

Your membership provides critical resources to ensure we will always be the leading conservation organization in this community—we’ll protect the lands that are important to you and continue to care for the lands that are already protected.

When we close our eyes and picture Stowe 25 years from now we see working farms, sustainably managed forests, places to explore

and engage with nature, or simply enjoy a breathtaking view. We strive to accomplish this vision every day—with the help of our members—by conserving the land that is important to our com-munity.

If we have missed or incorrectly listed your name, we regret the error and are eager to make the correction.

The Vermont Land Trust and the West Branch Gallery invite Stowe Land Trust members to join them on October 4 to learn about the campaign to protect a recreational and natural treasure in Stowe’s backyard.

The Vermont Land Trust (VLT) is working with the community to conserve 1,100+ acres that host most of Bolton Valley’s Nordic and Backcountry trail system. The land offers outstanding recre-ational opportunity and provides wildlife habitat and watershed protection. VLT must raise over $1 million by March 2013 to pur-chase the property, after which it will be transferred to the State as an addition to Mt. Mansfield State Forest.

Join VLT and the West Branch Gallery on Thursday, October 4 from 6:00-8:00 pm to learn about the project and view a special one-night show of art inspired by the property. Between 70%-100% of proceeds from sales of Bolton-inspired work will go to benefit the campaign. RSVP to VLT by emailing [email protected] or call (802) 262-1241.

SLT Thanks Local Art Galleries for their Support

Stowe Land Trust partnered with the Vermont Fine Art Gallery and the Galleria Fine Arte this summer to celebrate our 25th anniver-sary and support the campaign to protect Cady Hill Forest. This is an obvious partnership which brings awareness to local artists and the scenic beauty of our landscape. We are thankful for their sup-port of our efforts to protect the important places in our commu-nity. Please show your appreciation for their support by stopping by their galleries. The Vermont Fine Art Gallery is located in the Gale Farm Center and Galleria Fine Arte is located in the Village on Sunset Street.

Galleria Fine Arte’s show Vermont: A Romantic Journey, featuring art-ist John Caggiano ran through September 26, 2012. 10% of the proceeds from this show will be donated to Stowe Land Trust.

13th Annual Invitational Golf Tournament

With the help of over sixty local businesses and individuals who provided ev-erything from gift certificates and golf balls to 5 star dinners and brewery tours, we had a great time. The Calcutta Social and Golf Tournament raised more than $23,000! The support of this event is a testament to the importance our commu-nity places on farm land, forests and access to trails.

Many thanks to our sponsors and all who attended. Be sure to thank the individuals and businesses who supported this fun and successful event. We look forward to you joining us next year for the 14th annual tournament!
