VISUAL JOURNALDanish Institute of Study Abroad

While studying abroad in Copenhagen, I took a wonderful course called Visual Journal, which became my favorite class

that I’ve ever taken. For the course, I would visit buildings around Denmark, Germany, Austria and Switzerland and draw

on site. Through drawing, I was able to analyze and understand incredible architecture. I have learned that the best way to truly understand a space is to draw. Drawing is one of my greatest

passions and is the foundation and heart of my designs.

TINY HOUSESmall House Studio

Located on Long Pond on the coast of Maine, this summer retreat is an updated take on Maine cabin vernacular and

focuses on simplicity. Its design was inspired by the following passage from Thoreau’s Walden: “Every morning was a

cheerful invitation to make my life of equal simplicity, and I may say innocence, with Nature herself.”

Completed in 3 weeks with a volumetricconstraint of 1,600 cubic feet

NORTH EAST

A gabled roof keeps the space feeling open despite the small floor plan. A small loft utilizes the space above the bathroom.

Windows along the wall focus the space on theoutdoors. The windows in the bathroom are

reduced to eye level to offer privacy.

SOUTH WEST

The largest window is featured on the south wall tobring in sunlight.

The cabin is oriented towards the west, so that Long Pond and the sunset can be viewed

from the porch

The cabin features levels of interaction with the surrounding woods: the interior space with operable windows and pocket doors, the covered porch and the stone patio.

The interior space is multifunctional and minimalist. A shelf wraps the corner window, where the light filters through and silhouettes the displayed objects.

RECREATIONAL EQUIPMENT INC.Interior Design Studio | PAVE Student Design Competition

For the REI customers, their adventure starts when they leave the store. I wanted to keep the design cohesive and orderly so they can find what they need to pursue

their passions. The store is organized because nature is not.

REI values their community, so I put an emphasis on creating a community space to facilitate their multitude of programs. At the center of the store is a community space that allows customers to seek advice from staff members, plan a trip, read a

guidebook or swap stories with other customers.

For the design of the store, instead of mimicking nature, I wanted to eloquently express our harmonious relationship with nature. I wanted to evoke the sense of

contentment you feel when doing what you love in the great outdoors.

COMMUNITY SPACE

ABOVE: The ceiling of the camp store is comprised of extruding wooden beams that evoke the sense of being below a tree canopy.

RIGHT: Sinage is featured on the columns. The letters are layers of wood, representing topography lines.

CENTER: The custom fixtures are informed by the structure of the store.

CAMP STORE & HALL

BISHOP WOODSLandscape Architecture Studio

Bishop Woods is a 3 acre wooded area on Miami University’s campus. The aim of the project was to redesign the area to improve its

efficiency regarding educational and recreational use.

My proposed plan aims to integrate nature with the students’ daily life. I wanted to leave the site as natural as possible, while carving out

spaces for learning, gathering and individual reflection.

1. THE HUB

3. INDIVIDUAL SEATING

2. WOODEN PATH

4. SOCIAL SEATING 5. LECTURE AMPHITHEATER

All the paths converge at “the Hub“, a play on Miami University’s famous “Hub” on campus.

The path sits lightly on the site, allowing plants to grow beneath and around. The edge of the path features lights for safety.

Individual spaces are located throughout the site for those who

wish for a quiet area to sit.

A terrace with seating is located near the new student center, where there

is more traffic.

Located near the science building foroutdoor learning.

CHILDREN’S CULTURE HOUSEArchitecture Studio | Danish Institute of Study Abroad

The Children’s Culture House is a community center located Fredenspark,Copenhagen where children, teens and their families can gather. It is comprised of two wings: one for children and their families, and another for teens. They re-

late to each other in form, while having specific features that cater to thedifferent age groups’ needs. To develop my design, I interviewed two Danish 15

year olds about the kind of space they would like in the community center.

I wanted the overall design of the building to relate to human scale and keep a low profile in regards to the site. Out of respect to the park and its trees, the building never surpasses the height of the trees. The roof covered with grass,

sloping up from the landscape. Spending time outdoors is a prominent aspect of the Danish culture, so I kept the focus on the park and the nature.

The teens I interviewed were put off by some of the buildings around Copenhagen that are cold and dominating- they felt them impersonal. I wanted to instead relate to human scale to make the Culture House inviting.

The teens were most comfortable in cozy, intimate spaces where they felt they have a sense of ownership.I articulated this idea by creating a secluded space with a living room feel.

FINDING HOMEHand Renderings

Throughout my life I have lived in five houses in Connecticut, Massachusetts and New York. I created a time lapse video of me drawing all of the houses. I wanted to express how the homes I

have lived in influenced and inspired me as an aspiring architect. And that no matter where I am, I can find home.

HISTORICAL SELF-PORTRAITFigure Drawing Studio

This piece is based upon John Singleton Copley’s painting “Mrs. Thomas Gage” from 1771. Instead of the original subject, I am

depicted. I enjoyed creating this piece and exercising my drawing abilities outside the realm of architecture.

WATER COLOR PAINTINGDanish Institute of Study Abroad

While abroad, I took a watercolor painting class. During each class I was able to explore the city of Copenhagen and paint on site. The city is rich in history and incredible architecture. It was

wonderful to capture and appreciate some of the beautifulsights through painting.

As a graphic designer, I was responsible for designing the marketing materials for the annual Club Sports Fair. Instead of having the same poster hung throughout campus, I created a poster campaign with five variations that work together to

create a unified message. The posters feature photographs of different teams, as well as powerful descriptions that describe Club Sports.

Opposed to merely relaying the necessary information about the event, I wanted to represent the heart of the Club Sports program and evoke emotion in the

viewer, inspiring them to join a team.

PHOTOGRAPHYCopenhagen, Denmark | Flåm, Norway

My favorite way to experience a new place is through photography. It helps me slow down to focus on the smallest details. Those small details come together as something greater and give you an understanding of a place.

Something as simple as a sunset glowing through a city’s streets, snowcovered rooftops and the reflection in the water all become moments that

piece together the story of a place. When you are going about your day, you may not realize all of the incredible things happening around you.Photography allows me to visit a moment in time and appreciate

all of the elements in harmony.
