14.3 The Employer's entitlement to recover expense and loss interms of 33.0 shall take precedence over the reducing of thesurety or portions thereof

31.15 Retention Fund

31.15.1 The Employer shall withhold from the Contractor tenper cent (10%), with a maximum of five per cent (5%) of allpayments made before the issuing of the certificate of practicalcompletion as a retention fund. No interest is to be paid to theContractor on the retention fund. The retention fund shall beheld by the Employer as a guarantee to the Employer for thecompletion of the contract.

31.15.2 Two fifths (2/5) of the retention fund shall be paid to theContractor on the issuing of the certificate of practicalcompletion, and two fifths (2/5) on the issuing of the certificateof final completion and the remainder on the issuing of the finalaccount

107 LABOUR DESK

The contractor shall establish a labour desk on site with adedicated office of maximum 9m2 with a desk 2 chairs andelectricity. From the labour desk, the contractor will appoint adedicated community laison officer at a minimum monthly grossremuneration of R 7000.00, subject to all statutory deductions.The community laison officer will be employed by and will reportto the contractor, who will in turn forward such reports to thePrincipal Agent

General

The contractor shall carry out the whole of the works with aslittle mess and noise as possible and with a minimum ofdisturbance to adjoining premises and their tenants. He shallprovide proper protection and provide, erect and remove whendirected, any temporary tarpaulins that may be necessaryduring the progress of the works, all to the satisfaction of theprincipal agent

Water supply pipes and other piping that may be encounteredand found necessary to disconnect or cut, shall be effectuallystopped off or grubbed up and removed, and any newconnections that may be necessary shall be made with properfittings, to the satisfaction of the principal agent

Doors, fanlights, fittings, frames, linings, etc which are to bere-used shall be thoroughly overhauled before refixing includingtaking off, easing and rehanging, cramping up, re-wedging arequired and making good cramps, dowels, etc, and easing,oiling, adjusting and repairing ironmongery as necessaryreplacing any glass damaged in removal or subsequently andstopping up all nail and screw holes with tinted plastic wood tomatch timber, unless otherwise described. Re-painting orre-varnishing is given separately

Prices for taking out of doors, windows, etc shall include forremoval of all beads, architraves, ironmongery, etc

Old materials

Old materials from alterations except where described to bere-used or handed over, become the property of the Contractor

Cost of tests

The costs of making, storing and testing of concrete test cubesas required under clause 7 "Tests" of SABS 1200 G shallinclude the cost of providing cube moulds necessary for thepurpose, for testing costs and for submitting reports on thetests to the architect. The testing shall be undertaken by anindependent firm or institution nominated by the contractor andto the approval of the architect. (Test cubes are measuredseparately)

Breeze concrete

Breeze concrete shall consist of twelve parts clean dry furnaceash, free from coal or other foreign matter, to one part cement(12:1), the ash graded up to particles which will pass a 16,5mmring from a minimum which fails to pass a 4,75mm mesh. Thefiner materials from the screening are to be first mixed with thecement into a mortar and the ash added afterwards andthoroughly incorporated

Formwork

Description of formwork shall be deemed to include use andwaste only (except where described as "left in" or "permanent"),for fitting together in the required forms, wedging, plumbing andfixing to true angles and surfaces as necessary to ensure easyrelease during stripping and for reconditioning as necessarybefore re-use

uPVC pressure pipes and fittings:

Pipes for water supply shall be of the class stated

Pipes of 40mm diameter and smaller shall be plain ended withsolvent welded uPVC loose sockets and fittings

Pipes of 50mm diameter and greater shall have sockets andspigots with push in type integral rubber ring joints. Bends shallbe uPVC and all other fittings shall be cast iron, all with similarpush-in type joints

Copper pipes:

Pipes shall be hard drawn and half-hard pipes of the classstated. Class 0 (thin walled hard drawn) pipes shall not bebent. Class 1 (thin walled half-hard), class 2 (half-hard) andclass 3 (heavy walled half-hard) pipes shall only be bent withbenders with inner and outer formers. Fittings to copper waste,vent and anti-syphon pipes, capillary solder fittings andcompression fittings shall be "Cobra Watertech" type. Capillarysolder fittings shall comply with ISO 2016. Only compressionfittings shall be used in walls or in ground

Fixing of pipes

Unless specifically otherwise stated, descriptions of pipesshall be deemed to include fixing to walls etc, casting in,building in or suspending not exceeding 1m belowsuspension level

Lead pipes and fittings

All soldered joints shall be wiped and brass unions shall beused for jointing lead to steel

Reducing fittings

Where fittings have reducing ends or branches they aredescribed as "reducing". In the case of pipes with diametersnot exceeding 60mm only the largest end or branch size isgiven. Should the contractor wish to use other fittings andbushes or reducers he may do so on the understanding that noclaim in this regard will be entertained. In the case of pipeswith diameters exceeding 60mm all sizes are given and noclaim for extra bushes, reducers, etc will be entertained

Wire gratings

Descriptions of gutter outlets etc shall be deemed to includewire balloon gratings

Septic tanks

Descriptions of septic tanks shall be deemed to includeexcavation, bedding and jointing, concrete base slabs, jointingto drains and backfilling, compaction, etc all in accordance withthe manufacturer's instructions

Exposed concrete surfaces

Exposed surfaces of concrete stormwater channels, coverslabs, inspection eye marker slabs, gulley tops, cleaning eyetops, catchpits, inspection chambers, etc shall be finishedsmooth with plaster

Excavations

No claim for rock excavation will be entertained unless thecontractor has timeously notified the quantity surveyor thereofprior to backfilling

"Soft rock" and "hard rock" shall be as defined in "Earthworks"

Laying, backfilling, bedding, etc. of pipes

Pipes shall be laid and bedded and trenches shall be carefullybackfilled in accordance with manufacturers' instructions
