Advent derives from the Latin word "Adventus" which means "arrival". It is a time of waiting for the arrival of Christmas and the coming of Jesus to earth. The Church year begins with Advent Sunday, which in the Christian Church is "New Years Day". At the end of Advent, a celebration of the birth of Jesus on Christmas day. What should we do during advent? Advent is a time of preparation for the coming of the Christ Child, but in the midst of the pre-Christmas frenzy, it's easy to lose sight of the profound spiritual importance of the Advent season. Our greatest temptation during Advent will be scrimping on your spiritual needs because there are so many other things going on! Like presents to make or buy, cookies to bake, cards to mail, parties to plan, gifts to wrap and trees to decorate. There's nothing wrong with pre-Christmas preparations. But it's important to balance the sacred part of the Advent season with all of the other things you are doing. If you don't make time for quiet reflection, prayer and conversion of heart, you will find yourself physically, emotionally and spiritually exhausted by Christmas Day. Your Christmas celebration will look perfect on the surface, but will feel spiritually unsatisfying. You will have a hard time experiencing the joy and peace that Jesus in Bethlehem brings. It is a time to reflect on the coming of Christ from two different perspectives. The readings and the liturgies during Advent prepare us for the birth of Jesus, but they also prepare us for the Second Coming of Jesus at the end of the world. The season offers us the opportunity to share in the ancient longing for the coming of the Messiah, and to be alert as we await His Second Coming. Are we ready? THE WEEK AHEAD

A Family Perspective from the Office of Family Life Education (A Hope Appeal Agency): Today’s gospel tells us to “Be watchful.” This comes natural to families. Parents are watchful of their children’s health, grades and friends. Children are watchful of parental moods. Today’s gospel encourages us to use this ability to see God acting in the innocence, tenderness, love and forgiveness of your family. “Be watchful,” the Lord is already with you.

They are attached with Velcro to the front bar of your walker and have one large pocket on one side and two pockets on the other to make it easier for you to carry items when using your walker.

One is on display in the vestibule.

Altar Server Training: Sun., 12/10, 12-1:30pm. Please call the office if you have a young boy or girl who has received their First Communion and is interested in serving at Mass.

Monetary donations also accepted toward perishable items. Please give your name & mark envelope “Christmas Baskets” - may be dropped at the office or in the collection basket. Checks made out to Most Holy Rosary with “MHR Human Development” on the memo line. Thank you!

Our opportunity to help the less fortunate of our area this Christmastime is here! There are two Giving Trees with Tags in the back of the church – one for clothing & one for toys. If taking a tag, please make sure you sign the sheet next to the tree. Find the corresponding family #, if it is a girl or boy, and their age (located on the tag) and then print your name and phone number on the line as indicated. This is a very helpful way for us to track where the packages are in case they come in late. Collection time is shorter this year, and all gifts need to be at the church by Wed., 12/13. Please put the original tag on the package. $20 limit per tag. Thank you for taking a tag and making a child’s Christmas brighter!
