MORSELS & TIDBITS FROM OUR NEWEST DEACON

Journey towards the Diaconate

On Saturday September 26th, I was finally ordained a Deacon for the Archdiocese of

Chicago and St. Francis of Assisi Parish here in Orland Park. This four-and-a-half-year

journey has been filled with faith building experiences for my fellow Cohort, family, wife

Linda and I. I would not trade a minute of it, as I have received so much appreciation for

our Catholic Faith and Church. We are truly blessed as Catholics to be integral parts of

this one universal church, grounded in the belief of our Lord Jesus Christ and the salva-

tion he has promised each and everyone of us. My family and I would like to extend our

heartfelt gratitude to all the parishioners of St. Francis of Assisi for your continued sup-

port, prayers and words of encouragement during this journey. You strengthened my

commitment, dedication and resolve to become a Deacon. You are always in my prayers

and I am honored to be able to serve our faith community.

God Bless you all, Deacon Tim

Congratulations to Deacon Tim McCormick - Ordained 9.26.2020

The Ministry of Care is one of the oldest ministries in Christianity. In the early Church, members would often celebrate the Eucharist -the Breaking of Bread – in the homes of the early Christians. If someone was unable to attend the service because of illness, a family member or close friend at-tending the service would be given a piece of the consecrated bread to bring to him/her, thereby not only bringing the heal-ing power of Jesus but also reaffirming the absent individual as a member of the community. Ministry of Care is an outreach service of Saint Francis of Assisi Parish to those who are unable to participate in the celebration of the Eucharist. Ministers of Care bring the Word, prayer, and Eucharist to fellow parishioners. This ministry allows those who are home-bound to experience the nearness of God and the Christian community through the presence of the Minister of Care and through the reception of the Eucharist at life’s most difficult moments. Home visits are set-up for a mutually agreed upon day, time, and frequency with an assigned Minister of Care. The need may be short- or long-term. Should you or a loved one have such a need, please call Sr. Gael at the parish office, 460-0042. Our parish coordi-nator, Barb Basila will follow-up with your request.

PARISH LIFE COMMISSION

Saint Peregrine was healed

of a cancerous ulcer on his

leg which was considered

beyond saving. The fame of

this event in 1325 spread

rapidly round the western

Church. Christians, and es-

pecially the sick, began to

invoke his name and seek

his intercession for the relief

of their suffering and even

for a cure from sickness. The canonization of St. Pere-

grine in 1726 increased people’s devotion to him which

spread to the universal Church.

St. Francis of Assisi began offering a novena Septem-

ber 14 to St. Peregrine for those suffering from cancer

and an end to the COVID-19 pandemic. The novena will

be held for nine Mondays, through November 9. All pa-

rishioners are welcome to participate. Please remember

to wear your mask and social distance.

St. Peregrine is the patron saint for persons suffering

from illnesses of all types in particular cancer.

Please join us to celebrate the yearly feast of “Our Lady of the Rosary”. This will be on Wednesday,

October 7th, immediately following the 8:30 AM Mass. This liturgy will include the Rosary, Exposi-

tion of the Blessed Sacrament, and Benediction.

Pope Leo XIII was particularly devoted to Our Lady of the Rosary, producing 11 encyclicals on the sub-ject of this feast and its importance in the course of his long pontificate. He wrote, “It has always been

the habit of Catholics in danger and in troublous times to fly for refuge to Mary.”

The COVID-19 pandemic has posed many challenges to the Archdiocese of Chicago and our parishes, in-

cluding offertory funds lost due to the suspension of public liturgies. Parishes rely on the generosity of their

members to cover expenses related to ministry, maintenance, staffing, community outreach programs and

other pressing needs. If you prefer electronic giving, please visit: (https://www.givecentral.org/location/207)

to make a one-time or recurring gift to the parish and support the vital ministries and services it provides.

SICK RELATIVES & FRIENDS Names of sick relatives and friends normally appear in the

bulletin for six weeks. After six weeks, the names are written into our parish book of prayers for continued remembrance. At the request of

the family, names will appear in the bulletin for a longer period.
