Welcome Back Picnic The Special Events Committee is working hard on planning the annual “Welcome Back Picnic.” It was originally scheduled for Sunday, September 24, however it has been moved to Saturday, September 23 from 2-6. It will be at the same park as last year, located on Rio Grande Blvd and Chavez. Back to School Night Parents, you are invited to attend Back to School Night, Wednesday, August 27 from 6-7. It is designed as a parent-only event, for the teachers to present the curricular plan for the upcoming school year. Unfortunately there will be no child supervision available during this time. No Bus for Us Unfortunately we were unable to generate enough demand to continue pursuing student bus service to/from school. I truly wish this could be a service we could offer, but it’s just not going to happen this year. Smith’s Community Rewards NMIS received a check for $211.52 from Smith’s grocery. This is from NMIS community members shopping at Smith’s Grocery March – June, 2014, and having their “Smith’s Rewards Card” linked to NMIS. There is no cost to do so. The more you shop at Smiths and use your card (with it linked to NMIS), the more money we will receive. Thanks to all of you for your support! Get Involved – Joint the School Advisory Committee (SAC) The SAC is the voice of the parent community at the school. It is comprised mainly of parents, each representing a particular grade level. The SAC’s responsibilities are detailed in their bylaws, but include advising the GC and administration on the governing of the school. SAC members serve 2-year terms. There are vacancies for the following grade level representatives. You must have a child in that grade level to be a representative. Kindergarten Second Grade Fourth Grade Members are elected by fellow parents in that grade level. If you are interested in running for SAC office, submit a brief bio to me at [email protected] by Friday, August 22. Violin Rental Reminder Don’t forget to get a violin for your child to practice at home. It is highly recommended you rent a violin (rather than purchase). Violins come in very specific sizes (for example 1/10 or 1/8 or 1/2) and its possible for your child to grow this year and need to go up a size. If you chose to rent, you have several options. Baum’s Music on Eubank rents violins at $25/month. Robertson & Son’s rents for $15/month for sizes ½ and smaller and $20/month for ¾ and larger. Most rentals will include an instrument, case, bow, and block of rosin. Not included will be a shoulder rest. These are not required to play the instrument, but make it more comfortable for your child. The best price on these that I have found is Musicians Friend (www.musiciansfriend.com). They sell them for under $12. In This Issue: From the Director 1 Committee News 3 Upcoming Events 4 Help Wanted 4 NMIS Sponsors 5

Our Wonderful Neighbors We are very fortunate to have the community we do, especially our neighbors in our development. In fact, our neighbors at Hope in the Desert Church have even invited the entire NMIS community to their annual church picnic. It is Sunday, September 7 beginning around 11:00. There will be a bounce house and games for children. If your family opts to go, make sure you introduce yourself to one of the church staff members as an NMIS community member. They have been

wonderful, gracious neighbors and we appreciate their invitation. If you plan on attending, please contact the church at [email protected]
