ast and well-targeted transferof information – that’s the most
important requirement an alarmsystem today has to meet, in particularif its task is the protection of peopleand property. For only then can therecipients of information respondin the way expected from them:efficiently, flexibly and to the point.
For some time now Schrack Seconetfire alarm panels have been offeringthe feature to transmit events, such asalarm and error messages or maintenancerequests, to the mobile phones of thepersons responsible by means of textmessages.
In line with SchrackSeconet’s philosophy, thisfunction is now also web-based. TAS-Link is the nameof the new tool, connectedvia LAN to the fire alarmpanel by a system interface.“In this way the respectiveinformation and alarms withall additional information, such as detailed positioningdata, can be transmitted immediatelyafter the occurrence of events in the firealarm system,” says product managerRené Türk. “It does not matter at allwhere the contact person of the systemoperator is at the time, for they will geta text message with detailed informationto their mobile phone.”
Immediately after the fire alarmpanel has registered an event, the relatedinformation is transmitted to the TAS-Link. The system interface of the TAS-Link converts it into a text message and
sends it to the specified mobile phonenumbers. “Apart from the fast transmissionof information, the benefit of TAS-Linkis that it can be easily configured by meansof a user-friendly GUI and that thereforeinterface adaptations can be implementedfast,” says René Türk, explaining theadvantages of the new system.
In addition to information transmitteddirectly via TAS-Link from the fire alarmpanel by means of a text message, theservice can be used also with the newcontrol station SecoLOG IP. In this case, configuration is performed in the controlstation. For this purpose, SecoLOG IP
has been equipped with aninterface to the platformwww.blaulichtsms.at, whichis also used by emergencyforces.
René Türk on thequestion of whether the useof text messages might notbe seen as an anachronism:“The great advantage of atext message is that it isdevice-independent. Other
than push messages from apps, textmessages can be receivedby mobile phones ofall generations. Therefore thistechnology isstill used verysuccessfully.“

uservIP – customer serviceover IP – is the name of anumber of new options for
establishing a connection to SchrackSeconet systems by means of IPtechnology. Schrack Seconet is nowable to meet customer requirementsstill more specifically, efficiently andmuch faster.
The first technical revolution incustomer service was based on micro-processor-controlled systems whoseprogramming could be adapted on siteby replacing the EPROM. In a secondstep, the system was configured bymeans of software programs with orwithout hardware configuration – simpleprogramming and analyzing of thesystems on site became possible. WithcuservIP, Schrack Seconet’s customerservice again is put on a newtechnological basis. “We will be able
to analyse errors fromremote, give start-upsupport or check thestatus of a system,”says René Türk, theresponsible productmanager. “By meansof remote access we canoffer more efficiencyto our customers, increase flexibility, reduce response times and thus increaseavailability. In this way the quality ofour service is increased yet again,” saysTürk.
Mobile apps, such as the IACmobileor SACmobile, for displaying the controlpanel of a fire alarm system or the alarmsystem on a mobile terminal device, are used. By means of the program“Teamviewer” the PC of the serviceengineer, which is connected to thesystem, can be remote-controlled. In thisway the engineer can view the system
with his mobile device anywhere and canrequest assistance from central support.
While it is possible to access allsystems that are equipped with IPtechnology by mobile apps, the program“Teamviewer” can be used locally inalmost all Schrack Seconet systems incombination with the PC of the serviceengineer. “We can offer even bettercustomer service thanks to our newtechnological options and, with the newapps, the customer is better informedabout his new system,” concludesproduct manager René Türk.

Ghis year more than 4,500 exhibitors from
65 countries will present their products on theMedica in Düsseldorf. Over 130,000 visitors are
expected for the event. The largest medical trade fairin the world will be held from 12 to 15 November. Atthe same time, the topic “Science meets medicalengineering” is discussed on the MEDICA EDUCATIONCONFERENCE, which is part of Medica. This trademeeting in Germany is a fixture on Schrack Seconet’sannual fair schedule.
“We will present our pioneering communication systemVISOCALL IP to the visitors, as well as all the newfeatures we have developed over the past year,” saysproduct manager Edwin Fisar.
The VISOCALL IP software package 4.3 willbe presented on the Medica for the first time. Withthis package it has become possible to add a radioand telephone function to the Staff Terminal. Another
innovative feature is a new bidirectional interfaceto third-party ELA systems.
The highlight, however, is the integration of theEIB/KNX bus control system in VISOCALL IP.The room light, the reading light and the shuttersare controlled via a standardized installation busand standard IP interfaces. This results in furtherreduction of expenses for materials, cables andinstallation. Patients and home residents canconveniently control the lighting and shutters intheir rooms via the VISOCALL IP patient terminallike they used to and the operator will save costs. This is yet another win-win situation which SchrackSeconet has made come true: convenience for patientsand cost-cutting potential for property operators.

ince 1985 Steiermärkische Krankenanstaltengesellschaftm. b. H. – in short: KAGes – has been administratingthe regional hospitals of the Austrian Federal State
of Styria. In 2013 the four regional nursing centres wereintegrated into the privately-managed company, whichis wholly owned by the Federal State of Styria, and long-term nursing was added to the core tasks operation, buildingand management of hospitals. Patients in need of helpare offered the best medical and nursing services aroundthe clock.
Pioneer in the healthcare sector
The outsourcing of public hospitals from the federaladministration was an important step for ensuring the highestmedical standards in the Styrian healthcare sector. It was apioneering act in the nationwide healthcare system and, atthe same time, had a signalling effect on the development ofother federal states.
KAGes – an economic factor
By continuously improving and modernizing buildings,KAGes not only keeps its own high standards but alsocontributes to the prosperity and the purchasing power ofthe neighbouring regions. The technical infrastructure, forexample, is continuously modernised.
The non-profit healthcare organisation has 16,000employees from 40 different occupational categories on28 locations and thus is one of the most important motors ofthe Styrian economy. With this high number of employeesKAGes is among the largest hospital enterprises in Europe.KAGes impressively fulfils its function as a role model: thecompany particularly cares about the well-being of itsemployees and pays great attention to subjects like womenand family-friendly environments as well as the creation of
workplaces specially designed for theneeds of disabled employees. Thecompany has already won a numberof awards, such as the “Leading-Ladies-Award” or the “IRIS-Award”for achievements in communicationand proven conflict culture.
A healthy environment for communication
The Styrian Krankenanstaltengesellschaft m.b.H usescommunication systems from Schrack Seconet in 18 regionalhospitals.
“We are extremely glad to be the supplier of a modelenterprise like KAGes,” says Erich Grebenar from SchrackSeconet Styria. “We are very impressed by their motto ‘Peoplehelp people’ and we want to contribute to the well-being ofdoctors, nursing staff and patients.”
Since 2008 the systems have been gradually upgraded tothe IP technology based nurse call system VISOCALL IP. Thenew nurse call systems have already been integrated into theexisting IT infrastructure in 10 houses. The great advantageof integration into partly-routed networks is that installationcosts can be substantially reduced. Apart from the classicalnurse call feature, many other services, such as TV, radio, telephony or light control can be transmitted via existingconnections. The new technology is being introduced step bystep in existing houses. Thanks to backward compatibility, divisions which belong together can be interconnected flexiblyand at reduced costs, combined into functional units.
“We have opted for Schrack Seconet as partners, sincetheir systems, which we are already using, are flexible andcan be upgraded to the state-of-the art anytime,” says KarlKocever, Head of IT at KAGes, about why he has chosenSchrack Seconet.

he importance of healthcare in Africa isconstantly increasing. In spite of the differentdevelopment levels of the countries and regions,
there is a high demand for European-level healthcarethroughout the continent. And also the awareness ofthe necessity of preventive fire protection is on the rise.Know-how from Austria is particularly sought afterand therefore it has been possible for Schrack Seconetover the past years to make a name for itself in thehospital sector as a reliable supplier of communicationand fire alarm systems.
Libya’s largest hospital, the Tripoli Medical Center, issituated in the capital Tripoli, and employs a state-of-the-artfire alarm system. This year, Schrack Seconet has equipped the1,400-bed hospital with a highly-complex Integral network, which controls six fire alarm panels. This network was installedby the German-Libyan company, Global Products.
“We implement all projects together with partnercompanies,” says export manager Jürgen Tichy. “SchrackSeconet supplies the systems, local partners, who are trainedon the systems and build the hospitals, perform the installationand commissioning work.”
VISOCALL IP foruniversity hospital in Gabon
The Central-African state Gabon became known all overthe world because of its jungle hospital, founded by AlbertSchweitzer in Lambaréné. In Libreville, the capital of thecountry, which is located on the equator, Schrack Seconet hasequipped two hospitals with its systems. The universityhospital in Libreville, the Centre Hospitalier de Libreville, offers medical treatment of the highest standard to more than600 patients. Doctors, patients and nursing staff can rely onthe versatile communication system VISOCALL IP. Forpreventive fire protection a Schrack Seconet fire alarm panelis available.
In Owendo, a district in the south-western part of thecapital, VAMED has built a turn-key university hospital. For this hospital, the Owendo University Hospital,Schrack Seconet has supplied a fire alarm panel with500 detectors.
Elin Linz was responsible for the installation work inboth hospitals.

The city Monapo is located inthe province of Nampula, in thenorthern part of Mozambique. Thesize of this provincial capital canbe compared with Graz in termsof the number of inhabitants. Alsoin this city Austrian technology canbe found. The hospital, which wasplanned and built by VAMED, willhave both a fire alarm system anda VISOCALL IP communicationsystem from Schrack Seconet.
Further projects planned
“The quality and the reliability of our systemsare known to many hospital operators on theAfrican continent,” says Jürgen Tichy. “This iswhy I am convinced that we will keep onimplementing many projects together with ourpartners.”
One of these projects is already scheduled. This year, the Fogo Regional Hospital Cap Verdewill be equipped with Schrack Seconet technologyon Fogo, one of the Cape Verdean islands. In thishospital both a VISOCALL IP communicationsystem as well as a fire alarm system will beinstalled.

herever there is a concentration ofpeople the risk of accidents and

hen it comes to traffic riskysituations tend to develop very
fast. Fuels and lubricating oils aswell as the carelessness of drivers – all ofthese facts contribute to an increased risk attraffic hubs. The important thing to do inthese environments is to guarantee seamlessmonitoring by means of complex anddemand-oriented systems,” says Head ofExport, Herbert Hübl, who is very satisfiedwith the high-tech systems that SchrackSeconet has deployed all over the globe, ensuring that the company is thetechnological leader in this branch ofindustry.
Goods on the road
Due to their sheer dimensions, freightports are particularly impressive locations forgoods handling. The risk of fires at theselocations is considered particularly high –and not just where crude oil is involved.Eight of the ten largest ports in the worldare situated in Asia. Number one is the portof Shanghai, the world’s largest containerport, spreading over an area of 3,619 hectares.33.8 million containers with 736 milliontons of goods were handled there in 2013.Schrack Seconet has provided this big playerwith an extensive network of fire alarmpanels and thus extensive protection fromthe various risks of fires.
Also in Austria the transport of goods bywater is very important. Of course, the land-
locked country cannot come up with a portthe size of the Shanghai port. Still, thetotal turnover was an impressive 8.45 milliontons in 2013. The Vienna port, one of themost important spots, employs SchrackSeconet fire alarm panels for fire protection.250 manual detectors and 2400 automaticdetectors are installed in warehouses andoffice buildings. “The fire alarm panels inthe individual buildings are connected byfibre optic links and offer the highest securityand convenience to the operators,” explainsMarkus Korunka, Sales Manager at theVienna branch office.
Advanced fire protection for tunnels
When it comes to road safety, tunnels areparticularly critical areas. In Austria morethan 100,000 road kilometres are locatedin tunnels. Another 70,000 kilometres arecurrently constructed or planned. It is a sadfact that dramatic accidents resulting intunnel fires are occurring time and again. However, an accident in a tunnel neednot result in a grave fire catastrophe if theright protection has been chosen. SchrackSeconet systems protect tunnels reliably andaccording to need, as can be clearly seen bythe chain of Semmering tunnels or the system
of tunnels on the Turkish Tarsus-Adana-Gaziantep (TAG) motorway.
Complex systems, consisting of twelvefire alarm panels, 430 control groups and603 fire detectors, provide security in thetunnels of the S6 motorway (Semmeringchain tunnels).
TAG is one of the largest Turkishmotorway infrastructure projects. On theroute, comprising almost 300 kilometres, four tunnels with a total length of fivekilometres are protected by nine Integral firealarm panels, which are connected to thecentral control room via a control system.
Fireproof underground networks
Since the “Metropolitan Railway” inLondon took up operation in 1863, the metro, one of the most economical, fastest and safestmeans of traffic, has become an integral partof our daily lives. The only downside is that, when it comes to a fire, escape routes arescarce and the underground tubes may actlike chimneys and thus enhance fires. SchrackSeconet has developed highly-advanced firealarm systems specifically geared to the needsof metros. An Integral IP MX is employedat the lines 2 and 4 of the Budapest metro, where it operates with utmost reliability.Metro line 4 runs in a deep-bore tunnel, making it a pioneer in central Europe. Twoof the stations are an impressive 30 metersbelow ground. The deeper the tunnel the

Further selected traffic projects in
Another big project wasimplemented at the railwaystation of the Polish city ofPoznan. The ultramodernbuilding with an integratedshopping mall is monitoredby no less than 8,800 firedetectors and 800 manualfire detectors.
In 2013, for example, about 26.3 millionpassengers were cleared through the sixAustrian airports. If a fire breaks out inone of these public places, a lot of peoplewill be in danger. Schrack Seconet meetsthe resulting high need for safety with itsinnovative fire alarm systems. All buildingsat the Vienna airport are monitored in full
protection by automatic fire alarm systems(in the meantime the fourth generation) fromSchrack Seconet. All messages of the firealarm sub-panels are transmitted to a mainfire alarm panel via a redundantly designednetwork. Fire alarms are immediatelyindicated on the central control station ofthe airport from where operations arecoordinated. 55 fire alarm panels withabout 53,000 fire detectors are currentlyinstalled at the airport.

more complex the requirements on the firealarm system. Due to their specific location, the two metro stations had to be designedwith only one exit – in case of a fire thetunnel system itself will have to serve as anemergency exit. However, passengers neednot fear that something like this will everhappen. “With the graphical operationscontrol system SecoLOG the 15 fully-redundant fire alarm panels can be displayedand controlled centrally along the line. Inthis way we are in total control of any riskof fires,” says Hübl about the impressivebenefits of the systems.

n June 1914 the pioneers of ourbranch of industry founded the“Verein der Elektrizitätsindustriellen”
(Association of Electricity Industrialists),an association that later became the FEEI.The electrical and electronics industriesplay a central role in Austrian industryand are the second-largest industrialemployer. As a heavily export-orientedbranch the companies are particularlystrongly integrated into internationaleconomic life. The member companiesof the FEEI, among them also SchrackSeconet, make essential contributions toAustria's innovative power. A third of theinvestments in research and developmentin our country are made by the electricaland electronics industries.
F&C: The FEEI recently celebrated its100th anniversary under the beautiful motto‘A 100 years of future’, which emphasizesboth the historical and the future aspect. How important are the companies of theFEEI for each individual in our society?
Dr. Roitner: For 100 years our industry hasbeen the lifeline of society. There is hardlyanother branch that, with its innovations, has had more impact on our everydayand economic lives and that will definethe technical progress also in future – fromultrafast data transmission to driverlesscars and much more. We have celebrated“A 100 years of future” as the innovative
power and the products of our branch willkeep on being the motor for meeting thechallenges of our society also in the decadesto come. The megatrends are energyefficiency, urbanisation, traffic as well asthe healthcare and nursing sector. Oftenthe technology for meeting these challengesis already there. It just has to be used.
F&C: Where would you set the focus?
Dr. Roitner: I think that what the Germanscientist and politician Ernst Ulrich vonWeizsäcker said in his commemorativespeech at our anniversary event really hitthe mark: “We only have one Earth, notseven to spare!” Therefore our future effortswill have to focus on the efficient use ofresources.
F&C: What will be the focus of the FEEIduring the next decades?
Dr. Roitner: One of the most importantchallenges is training and education. Ourbranch of business has the same numberof employees as 20 years ago. In themeantime, however, white-collar workersmake up 60 % of the workforce. But alsothe majority of the 40 % blue-collar workersare highly-skilled workers. We needqualified staff. After all, we are facing a lotof changes in our branch of industry. Twentyyears ago, the FEEI founded the Universityof Applied Sciences “Technikum Wien” byestablishing a course of study. Today wehave 28 – exclusively technical – studycourses and 3,000 students. However weare also planning to intensify the activitiesof our 20 subsidiaries, with a voluntarymembership of another 100 companies. Iusually like to emphasize our concept of“voluntariness”, for the FEEI is funded onlyto one third by compulsory membershipfees. The rest of our income comes fromselling services to our members. This makesus a particularly successful role model forthe future.
F&C: This year Schrack Seconet celebratesits 20 years’ anniversary. How do you seethese 20 years? Would you dare a glimpseinto the future?

raffic routes are used for transporting peopleand goods from point A to point B. A transportnetwork, which ensures that a city or a region are
supplied with important goods and services, is made upof a number of traffic routes. The transport network ofa fire alarm panel equipped with IP technology is themesh network, the transported goods are the informationitems. They supply us with safety and security.
Clogged-up roads, accidents resulting in hold-ups or damageto road surfaces often make using these transport networksrather difficult. While alternative routes may be available, they, too, tend to be overloaded soon. The benefit of a meshnetwork in a fire alarm panel is that there is not just one or atbest two routes. A mesh network has multiple routes betweenthe individual network nodes, which means that there isalways a free route on which information can be transported,
even in case of a fault. If one or even several routes are blocked,an automatic search for alternative routes is started. In thisway the functions of the fire alarm system remain fully intacteven if faults in the cable network occur. That’s the beauty ofa mesh network – the devices will always find a way tocommunicate with each other, which significantly increasessecurity. The risk of failure is next to nil.
