Passionate local advocates Sara Mitchell & Susan McIntyre who are also part of the Point Cook Action Group have been accepted into the Neighbourhood Project to create a pop up community space in Point Cook. They are very excited, their idea to activate a space where locals can connect with locals, was chosen out of many applications from across the State. The group will work in collaboration with Wyndham City Council, Stockland Point Cook and Co-Design Studio—The Neighbourhood Project. The proposed date for the Pop Up Park is from The Lunar Festival 26 February 2018 until the Easter School holidays 15 April 2018.
If you would like to offer support as a volunteer, offer your time, support with skills, resources, donations or would like to host events submit your expression of interest through https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/PCPOPUP or email [email protected] and for more information visit the Point Cook Pop-Up Park Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/PCPOPUP
The Neighbourhood Project is a practical program to make community-led place making easier, removing roadblocks and headaches by creating a replicable model that can be used by councils and communities everywhere. In addition to supporting local leaders, the Neighbourhood Project is serious about creating lasting changes in how councils work with their communities. “Great places are made by local people,” said Lucinda Hartley, CEO of CoDesign Studio, “we want to create the enabling environment within councils that lets the community take a role in creating neighbourhoods that improve their lives. We know the Neighbourhood Project will do that”.

POP UP PARK
Fifteenth day of the eight lunar month (middle of the 3 months of autumn in China) is the Chinese Traditional Mid Autumn Festival, which fell on 4 October this year. It marks a time for family to reunite to enjoy the harvest
together. It is customary for Chinese to admire the moon while eating Mooncakes, which are round in shape to symbolise the full moon and the symbol of reunion. The Moon Cake comes in many varieties and the making differs throughout China and other Asian countries. There are sweet, salty, meat and vegetable fillings with a variety of decorative patterns and words.

KNITTING FOR GOODNESS
The ladies from the Saltwater Craft Group have been at it again! They have been busy little bees….. knitting up a storm of goodies. Blankets, beanies, gloves, mittens and toys for the Refugee families from the Wyndham Community & Education Centre, Ronald McDonald House & Indigenous Health Services. Twiddlemuffs for Dementia Sufferers. Inside each hand crafted muff are different objects and textures for the wearer to play with. These have been shown to alleviate anxiety commonly associated with dementia, autism, Asperger’s and other mental health issues. The group recently visited Western Health’s GEM Dementia Assessment Unit at Sunshine Hospital. On top of that keeping with their tradition they made Tea Cosies for the Royal Melbourne Show “Tea Cosy Collective” Art & Craft competition. The Tea Cosies will go on display at the Windsor Hotel in Melbourne raising funds for Alzheimer’s Australia. If you would like to get involved, the group meets every Wednesday from 9am-12pm at Saltwater Community Centre, 153 Saltwater Promenade, Point Cook. For more information contact the centre 8376 5500 or email [email protected].

Local community group Melbourne Yangtze Choir was just one of many great performances and activities at the Public Pedagogies Institute (PPI), Pop Up School, at Station Place in Werribee during the Wyndham Learning Festival last month. The Learning Festival which celebrated life long learning, offered more than 130 free events right across Wyndham. The Melbourne Yangtze Choir meets every Saturday night at Featherbrook Community Centre, Point Cook. For information email [email protected]
“An ongoing project of the PPI, the Pop Up School initiative is designed to create community events that explore learning and teaching located in specific places and locations. The project is supported by research into how knowledge is perceived and valued geographically,” said Karen Charman President of PPI. For more information on PPI Institute visit their website www.publicpedagogies.org/
