Over the past few years, Anglo American Platinum confronted many challenges and needed to redefine what success would look like. This included the type of culture it needed to adopt in order to transition to success, stability and significance. To take a step forward, the company needed to understand from the labour unions and workforce what the issues were that mattered most to them and their hopes for the future.

“We need to look to the future and at what happens when we get it right,” said senior general manager Richard Cox. “’Culture’ is made up of our assumptions and when we all make the same assumptions and think alike we can move forward.”

He added that Platinum is a strong community made up of individuals who understand that common purpose is what will heal the past, build a great future and leave a lasting legacy for generations to come.

The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) Mogalakwena branch chairperson, James Baloyi, said that NUM is hopeful that Platinum’s three organisational culture transformation pillars of ‘Leadership’, ‘Values’ and ‘Workforce Engagement’ mean that NUM's input and contributions will matter. “We are committed to play our role in making it work.”

“We are a generation that must understand what precious opportunities we have now,” added NUM North East Region Chairperson Phillip Vilakazi.

Sarah Langa, the Women in Mining chairperson said that culture impacted everyone within a community and that she hoped to see a future where women are included in all decision making at top level.

As part of the collaborative session, which saw attendees walk through its common purpose and intent, symbolic culture trees were 'greened' with individual pledges by attendees to build a great Platinum culture.

These pledges ranged from “being more understanding”, and “listening more than I speak”

EMPLOYER OF CHOICE...Chris Griffith, Anglo American Platinum chief executive officer, said that strategic success means taking our people along with us even though the journey has been difficult over the past few years due to the economic pressures the group faced. Step 3 Set financial goals

To control your expenses, you need to track them and identify appropriate ways to reduce them when necessary.

The key to money management is to work with a budget. In this way, you know exactly what money you earn and what you spend it on.

For most families, the first step in budgeting is to determine a realistic picture of your net income. Your net income is the amount of money you take home after deductions for tax, for example.

The dictionary defines culture as “the ideas, customs and social behaviour of a particular people or society”. This means that the word ‘culture’ refers to the collection of knowledge, experience, beliefs, values and attitudes of a group of people through the course of generations.

Keeping this in mind, it is easy to understand that an ‘organisational culture’ is a system of shared assumptions, values and beliefs which governs how people behave within that organisation. At Anglo American Platinum we have noted that these shared values have a strong influence on how the people in the organisation perform their jobs.

Our Platinum culture is one that, above all, seeks to be inclusive and respectful of all the people it reaches and impacts. It is built on the voices and opinions of many, but is taken up in one spirit – a spirit of togetherness, optimism and collaboration.

We consider our host communities to be part of the organisation and its culture. ‘Ubuntu’ is a uniquely African word with a concept that is best summed up by the old Zulu saying ‘Umuntu Ngumunti Ngabantu’ which can be translated to ‘I am what I am because of who we all are’.

According to Ubuntu, there exists a common bond between us all and it is through this bond, through our interaction with each other, that we discover our human qualities.

As the author Michael Onyebuchi Eze explains, the core of Ubuntu suggest that

‘humanity is a quality we owe to each other'.For Platinum, this means that our culture is

more than what we say. It is underpinned by the significance and value of what we do.

Our culture defines who we are – a strong Platinum community made up of individuals who understand that common purpose is what will heal the past, build a great future and leave a lasting legacy for the generations to come.

Platinum has embarked on a cultural transformation journey aimed at sustaining a culture of personal, team and organisational “Tshiamo” or wellness. Our slogan is ‘Real Mining, Real People, Real Difference’. This difference is a transformed organisation embracing a healthy workforce culture and making a significant difference in the communities where we operate.

The organisational culture transformation pillars of Leadership, Values and Workforce Engagement hold us up and hold us to our pledge to forge a culture that respects the individual, builds into the community and speaks to our strategic and commercial intent.

    GETTING DEBT UNDER CONTROL

Many South Africans have too much debt and need to get their personal finances under control and reduce stress related to money, or lack of it. Gaining control over your personal finances is a major achievement and will give you and your family more confidence about the future.

To evaluate your family’s cash spending, have each household member track purchases for three months. A small personal notebook or cell phone notes will be a good way to keep a record of the spending. The record should include information such as the date, item purchased and cost.

Make a detailed list of your consumer debts, including all types of loans, credit cards and credit lines.

Start thinking about every expense in terms of their importance and how they might be reduced. For example, ask

months), mid-range goals (1-3 years) and long-term goals (3-5 years).

A great place to start with setting goals is to tackle your debt. Calculate how long it will take to pay off store cards and credit cards, for example.

Once you have settled your debt, you can then start setting goals, such as, saving for a holiday or for university or college fees.

Setting goals is a terrific motivator and a great way

to teach your children about money management.

Mogalakwena Complex engaged with the Pastors of the Mapela community at the end of 2016. The pastors asked the complex to look at a moral regeneration programme for schools. The complex approached Lighting Tomorrow, a South African run company that works with the youth.

Anglo American Platinum has funded a one-year pilot programme which involves 446 Hans Masebe Primary school learners and 75 Sekoba Secondary school learners. After a year, says Mogalakwena Complex community relations officer Jack Selowa, Platinum will consider rolling the programme out to other schools one at a time.

“This programme is aimed at developing children into future leaders. We believe that education is one of the most important investments that can be made.”

The roles are carefully selected to ensure that each BLASTer is given opportunities to develop their skills, knowledge and experience, equipping them to become part of the emerging talent population of Anglo American.

Typically, a career path on BLAST would initially be a role in South Africa, very closely aligned to the BLASTer’s field of study. This could take longer

The last role is selected to ensure the BLASTer is well-prepared for a role post in the business.

Every participant has a customised development plan ensuring he or she is well placed in the company to have a successful career.

3 A four-year degree or post-graduate degree in disciplines related to mining, particularly mechanical engineering, mining engineering, chemical engineering and business science or finance.

3 Excellent academics. 3 Demonstrate strong leadership 3 Possess drive, ambition and a passion for new challenges. 3 Active participation in campus or community life.

APPLICATIONS ARE OPEN FROM 3 MAY TO 30 JULY 2017

DO YOU HAVE WHAT IT TAKES?

TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF?I was born in Soweto in 1990 and relocated to Mafefe (60km southeast of Lebowakgomo in Limpopo). I lived with my grandmother and completed my primary schooling at Komane Primary. I completed Grade 12 at Marobathota High School.

I finished my tertiary studies at the University of the Witwatersrand where I enrolled for a Bachelor of Science degree in Geology in 2008. Today, I hold a Master of Science (MSc) degree in Geology, which I completed while working under the BLAST graduate programme.

HOW LONG WILL YOU BE AT MOGALAKWENA COMPLEX?I am not based permanently at the Mogalakwena Complex and have been here for about 14 months as part of my rotational programme through BLAST. I will complete 18 months here and then I will be going to a copper mine in Chile in South America!

At present, my primary role is production geology. I enjoy running projects that add value to the company and improve the quality of geology practices.

    HAVING A BLAST!

HOW DID YOU HEAR ABOUT THE BLAST GRADUATE PROGRAMME?I heard about the programme from other students who had applied for it. It was only when I was doing my MSc, that I saw an article about the programme in the GradX magazine that I applied for it.

TELL US ABOUT YOUR JOURNEY?The first essential programme I underwent in my first year as a BLASTer was Operational Risk Management. I also attended The Achiever Programme, which is aimed at improving self-awareness, interpersonal skills, professional and business case engagements and social responsibility. I learnt a lot about myself during this programme. The BLAST programme also partly funded my studies for my MSc degree.

I am completing my fourth year as a BLASTer and the main challenge is to adapt to working in different environments.

As a graduate you need help from your team to fast-track the learning process. In my experience there is not better

catalyst to this process than genuinely being a nice person and a good team player – it makes one teachable.

WHICH OPPORTUNITY HAS BENEFITED YOUR THE MOST DURING YOUR TIME AT BLAST?As a geologist, I benefited from the ability to move from one business unit to another with ease. I worked at two De Beers mines in South Africa, I’m working at a platinum mine (Mogalakwena Complex) and will soon be working at a copper mine in Chile.

These are core commodities of Anglo American, so the flexibility of the BLAST programme also offers you the benefit of planning your career in alignment with the company’s medium-term and long-term visions.

WHAT IS YOUR ADVICE TO OTHER GRADUATES APPLYING FOR BLAST?This is a great programme, arguably the best in the country. You get to work with the brightest young minds at the forefront of the international mining industry. Like all good

things, the opportunity comes with an element of responsibility and pressure. One needs develop themselves and not shy away from learning new skills.

This is one programme where your personality and character matters as much as your technical ability, if not more. It’s not good enough to just be technically sound.

My advice for potential graduates is to work on their personal brand to complement their technical abilities.

How you portray your brand in a working environment dictates how people will feel about you. At the end of the day, it is the feeling you leave behind that people hold on to better than what you actually do.

Applications are open for brightest talent to join Anglo American's flagship graduate programme. If you have finished your four-year university degree or post-graduate degree in any mining discipline, you may be eligible for the BLAST (Building Leaders and Shaping Talent) programme. Sello Mashabela is a production geologist at Mogalakwena Complex and one of the ‘BLASTers’ currently enrolled in the programme.

    “I am thankful that Anglo

American chose to implement a programme like

    this in South Africa.”

“You need a special kind of person to do this job and we see ourselves as a family that work together in a team to better the lives of everyone we meet.

“People are surprised to learn that Platinum offers a free service to its host communities situated in a 50km radius of around Mogalakwena complex. We also service Mokopane town in the evenings and weekends when necessary.”

All the volunteers are Mogalakwena Complex employees and work shifts during which they are on standby for any emergency. Every ambulance shift is covered by a qualified paramedic and two ambulance crew members.

“We work closely with Netcare through the Mogalakwena Platinum Health Clinic,” says Kleynhans.

Every Monday afternoon the volunteers attend training and special information sessions, which cover topics, such as, snake bite treatment.

Kleynhans says that the team has a close working relationship with the municipal ambulance services in Mokopane as well as the special rescue police unit based in Polokwane.

“We are often called upon to assist in emergency situations or to assist with disaster management issues. We get up to 35 calls a month and find satisfaction in knowing that we are out there saving lives and making a real difference," he says.
