“Music is indeed the

most beautiful of all Heaven’s gifts to humanity wandering in the darkness. Alone it calms, enlightens, and stills our souls. It is not the straw to which the drowning man clings; but a true friend, refuge, and comforter, for whose sake life is worth living.”

Join us for a celebration 85 years in the making, as we com-memorate eight and a half decades of enriching lives through music. The night starts with a premiere from contemporary composer and Modesto Symphony Youth Orchestra alumnus, Andrew Norman. Llewellyn Sanchez-Werner, a 2014 Gilmore Young Artist award winner, heats things up as he takes to the piano for Gershwin’s ragtime themed Concerto in F. Virtuosic trumpeter, composer and arranger Brandon Rid-enour is widely recognized as one of the most multi-talented and formidable artists of his generation. Performing his own composition, he pushes the boundaries of both the trumpet and its players with his piece. The concert opens with a special side-by-side performance of the Prelude to Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg with members of our MSYO and concludes with Beethoven’s most energetic symphony he has ever written! The second movement of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7 is recognizable in iconic films such as The King’s Speech, Mr. Holland’s Opus and Knowing.

DVOŘÁK SYMPHONY NO. 9: “FROM THE NEW WORLD”Miller · Scherzo Crypto* Saint-Saëns · Violin Concerto No. 3Dvořák · Symphony No. 9

Internationally acclaimed guest violinist, Angelo Xiang Yu, performs Saint-Saëns’ powerful third violin concerto. Popularly known as the “New World Symphony” — Dvořák’s piece stands as an homage to America inspired by the rhythms of Native Ameri-can music, African American spirituals, and the wide-open spaces. Beloved the world over, a recording of the symphony accompanied Neil Armstrong and the crew of Apollo 11 as they set off to explore the new world of the lunar surface.

Angelo Xiang Yu

MAHLER SYMPHONY NO. 2: “RESURRECTION”Mahler · Symphony No. 2

The Modesto Symphony wraps up the classic series with Mahler’s monumental Resurrection Symphony. This five movement work summons the full force of the orchestra and chorus to evoke the journey of life, death, and the after-life through music. An auditory marvel, this surround sound concert features an offstage ensemble of brass and percussion integrated into the audience leaving you in awe of Mahler’s most popular work.

Modesto Symphony Youth Orchestra (MSYO)The MSYO serves nearly 100 member musicians and their families from over forty public and private schools in the Central Valley. Attracting a diverse group of outstanding young musicians, the program is comprised of two skill based ensembles, a Symphony and Concert Orchestra, which players audition for each season. Both orchestras perform three concerts each season at the Gallo Center for the Arts. Our young musicians benefit from mentoring and conducting by our professional musicians, conductors and visiting guest artists through workshops, side-by-side performance and clinics offered to students.

Education ConcertsThis season we are proud to present Carnegie Hall’s Link Up: The Orchestra Moves! music education, composition and performance curriculum to our area students grades three through five. A program of the Weill Music Institute, this thoroughly researched and tested curriculum teaches children the fundamental concepts of music, building students’ self-esteem and critical cognitive paths for continued success in education.

Students participating in this program perform with the Modesto Symphony on March 11, 2016 in a culminating concert as they sing, dance and play recorders or string instruments from their seats with the orchestra!

Modesto Symphony ChorusFormed in 2001, the Modesto Symphony Chorus is comprised of over 140 singers of all ages and experience from around the region. Under the skillful and inspiring direction of Dr. Daniel R. Afonso, Jr., the MSO Chorus engages in weekly rehearsals throughout the season in preparation for various performances with the MSO. Members also are active within the Stanislaus County, performing at several non-profit and treasured community events.
