BITS AND BOBS by Aileen I do hope you are all invigorated and full of good cheer

after Christmas.

We all have moans and groans at some time or another, but remember that no one wants to hear your complaints on top of their own!! After all theirs are MUCH more important. Seriously, I hope your Christmas was a good one, as mine was. I spent it with my family and a grand time was had by all. However, the cherry on my cake (after my sky dive that you can read about elsewhere in the Vibe) was a visit to Hluhluwe Game Reserve for two days. Although it was extremely hot and dry, we saw 34 rhino. Yes, 34. Incredible wasn't it. The biggest group was a pod of 3, and all the others we saw were in very different areas of the park, so couldn't have been the same ones. They were in all shapes and sizes, but what a magnificent sight. How anyone wants to kill these beautiful animals is beyond my comprehension. They were wallowing in mud holes, standing by the side of the road, or just crossing over. What a sight to behold. We also saw three lionesses - one with a tracking collar. They were off on a mission and obviously had something in their sights. In all of this, we only saw one lonely elephant, but a huge guy reaching up to the trees. Plenty of amusing warthogs, lots of buck, buffalo and zebra. All the animals looked in pretty good condition in spite of the drought. Lots of human animals too, which was great to see, and as usual, every language under the sun being spoken. Tourism is alive and well. It’s going to be a bit of an anti-climax getting back to normal living, but of course, there is always the next family time to look forward to.

Till next time, Aileen

SWIMMING POOL RULES… IGNORED! Sadly each year the same complaints surface and no matter how many signs are put up, our village residents just totally ignore them! So as your editor, I have taken it upon myself to appeal to everyone who uses the swimming pool to PLEASE OBEY THE RULES that are displayed within the pool area.

Notice 1:

RESIDENTS POOL ALL VISITORS MUST BE ACCOMPANIED BY

A RESIDENT

What part of that notice is not clear? Why do residents continue to send their guests to the pool UNACCOMPANIED?

If you don’t go with them – they don’t go! Perhaps it’s time to name and shame these folk – especially

as the unaccompanied guests are being problematic and inconsiderate towards others. Children need to be supervised

by an adult and a resident! Come on folks, tow the line!

Notice 2 is extremely clear:

NOTICE: THE USE OF THIS POOL IS MADE AVAILABLE FREE OF CHARGE TO RESIDENTS AND THEIR

ACCOMPANIED GUESTS. THE COSTS OF MAINTAINING THE POOL ARE CARRIED

ENTIRELY BY THE RAC AND NO CONTRIBUTION WHATSOEVER IS MADE TOWARD THESE COSTS FROM

GENERAL VILLAGE LEVIES. THE IMPORTANCE OF VOLUNTARY DONATIONS FROM

RESIDENTS AND THEIR GUESTS TOWARD MAINTAINING THE HIGH STANDARD OF THIS FACILITY CANNOT BE OVER EMPHASISED. USERS ARE KINDLY URGED TO

PLEASE DO THEIR BIT IN THIS REGARD. DONATIONS MAY BE DEPOSITED DIRECTLY INTO THE

COLLECTION BOX AT THE ENTRANCE TO THE CHANGE ROOMS OR PAID IN AT THE RAC OFFICES.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR GENEROUS CO-OPERATION. Again, this goes unheeded. If using the pool is what you

enjoy, then be responsible and contribute towards this enjoyment – we are so very fortunate to have such wonderful facilities at our disposal, so make your contribution regularly

before it all disappears - because when the funds do run dry – which they will – the pool will be dry!

Editor

CONGRATULATIONS AND WELL DONE AILEEN – MAY YOU ENJOY MANY MORE ADVENTUROUS BIRTHDAYS!

FIFTY BUCKS IS FIFTY BUCKS! Bill and his wife Blanche go to the state fair every year, and every year Bill would say, " Blanche, I'd like to ride in that helicopter " Blanche always replied," I know Bill, but that helicopter ride is fifty bucks, And fifty bucks is fifty bucks!" One year Bill and Blanche went to the fair, and Bill said," Blanche, I'm 75 years old. If I don't ride that helicopter, I might never get another chance" To this, Blanche replied, " Bill that helicopter ride is fifty bucks, and fifty bucks is fifty bucks " The pilot overheard the couple and said," Folks I'll make you a deal. I'll take the both of you for a ride. If you can stay quiet for the entire ride and don't say a word I won't charge you a penny! But if you say one word it's fifty dollars." Bill and Blanche agreed and up they went. The pilot did all kinds of fancy maneuvers, but not a word was heard. He did his daredevil tricks over and over again, But still not a word... When they landed, the pilot turned to Bill and said, " By golly, I did everything I could to get you to yell out, but you didn't. I'm impressed! " Bill replied, " Well, to tell you the truth I almost said something when Blanche fell out, But you know, Fifty bucks is fifty bucks!

THE LITTLE OLD LADY The local news station was interviewing an 80-year-old lady because she had just gotten married for the fourth time. The interviewer asked questions about her life, about what it felt like to be marrying again at 80, and then about her new husbands occupation. “He’s a Funeral Director,” she answered. “Interesting,” the newsman thought… He then asked her if she wouldn’t mind telling him a little about her first three husbands and what they did for a living. She paused for a few moments, needing time to reflect on all those years. After a short time, a smile came to her face and she answered proudly, explaining that she had first married a Banker when she was in her 20’s, then came a Circus Ringmaster when in her 40’s, and then a Preacher when in her 60’s, and now – in her 80’s – a Funeral Director. The interviewer looked at her, quite astonished, and asked why she had married four men with such diverse careers. “I married one for the money, two for the show, three to get ready, and

four to go.” ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

THE HISTORY OF BOVRIL

'What is the vril?' I asked. Therewith Zee began to enter into an explanation of which I understood very little, for there is no word in any language I

know which is an exact synonym for vril. - Edward Bulwer Lytton, The Coming Race.

Not only did the writing of Victorian novelist Edward Bulwer Lytton inspire a spoof fiction contest, but one of the terms he coined lives on today in the name of one of the most iconic of British food brands. Members of the master race that Bulwer Lytton described in his 1871 novel The Coming Race derive their mind-controlling powers from a mysterious fluid energy he called 'vril'. The concept caught the imagination of many of the time, including one Scottish chemist, looking for a name for the beef extract product he had recently developed. Beef Vril? Ox Vril? Bovine Vril – hang on, that's it – Bovril! The chemist in question was John Lawson. Johnston, born in Roslin, Midlothian in 1839. Indeed, the location of his birth connects the man to the mumbo-jumbo of another bestselling author; Roslin (or Rosslyn) Chapel is the final resting place of the Holy Grail in Dan Brown's The Da Vinci Code. Johnston needed the snappy brand name: he had marketed the product up to then as 'Johnston's Fluid Beef'. He first came up with the idea of a beef broth in 1863 while working in Canada, but developed this into the familiar bottled concentrate 12 years later. A renowned food scientist, he had been approached by the French government to supply their army with one million tins of beef. They clearly hadn't learned Napoleon Bonaparte's wisdom that an army marches on its stomach, and the undernourishment of troops was implicated in their defeat in the Franco-Prussian war of 1870-71. Johnston used the leftovers from this order to develop a beef concentrate at a factory in Quebec City, later moving production to Montreal. After a fire swept through the Montreal plant in 1884 Johnston relocated to London, where he set up production once again. The Bovril name was registered in 1887, and the distinctive bulbous brown jars followed one year later. It's no exaggeration to say that Bovril was a huge commercial success. Johnston sold his company for £2 million in 1896 and used his wealth to buy a mansion in South London, as well as the Prince of Wales' racing yacht Britannia. He left an estate of £1 million when he died in 1900 – on board another yacht in Cannes. The Bovril Company managed the product through its heyday up until 1971, when it was sold to James Goldsmith's Cavenham Foods. Goldsmith sold off company assets including their Argentinian cattle ranches in order to finance the purchase. In 1980, it was sold along with Marmite and Ambrosia to pharmaceutical giant Smithkline Beecham, and in 1990 the products were bought by CPC (later Bestfoods). In 2001 they were assimilated into the Unilever empire.

THE CIRCLE OF FRIENDSHIP/HIBISCUS FRAIL CARE

New resident, Arthur Momplé relocated from Cottage 51 to Sunflower, HH in December 2016. He formerly worked for the SAR&H in Durban before he and Marie moved to the MRV 16 years ago. They have 3 children, 5 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. Arthur started attending a gym at 19 yrs of age and believed in the benefits of exercise, even to having his own gym in his garage at home. Arthur's disciplined and enthusiastic approach to gym (up to age 85) resulted in him helping and 'coaching' others in the Village, for which he became so well-known and loved. Arthur enjoyed reading, photography and honed his computer skills while keeping in touch with his many friends via email. He seldom missed bible study each week and was also a keen birder and gardener. We wish him a speedy recovery!

NEW VOLUNTEERS David Holt-Biddle (Cottage 105) – Birthday Visits and back-up for

Shelley King (Cottage 169) has volunteered to play the organ for Sunday Reflections once a month.

She is delighted to be part of the Circle of Friendship.

CHRISTMAS CAROLS with Tookie & the Music Hour Team The residents had a wonderful time to end off the year singing many well known carols and Christmas songs which they thoroughly enjoyed. Added to the festivities, each resident received a little sparkly heart ornament kindly made by Carol Tyers and a little 'parcel' of sweets enrobed in Christmas serviettes, organised by Muriel Hyde & Yvonne Bucher. All the residents left with not only the lovely goodies, but also a few songs in their hearts and lilts in their steps. The team really put themselves out for this little sing-a-long each year and our grateful thanks to them all!

CHRISTMAS CHEER with SUE & FRIENDS from S.H.A.F.T.S. Sue Salthouse, the energetic pianist who plays for the Sunflower residents each Tuesday, invited her fellow friends from S.H.A.F.T.S. to lend their voices to sing Christmas carols for the Sunflower residents. What a fun time they had - even one of the residents, Floraine Tyrrell voluntarily joined the singers - bringing back fond memories of her days in a Scottish choir! Little sweet parcels were handed out afterwards to the delight of the residents who felt lifted up by the love shown and bringing to them once again, the true spirit of Christmas!

CHRISTMAS DAY WITH THE KINGS! Chris & Shelley King surprised the residents with a joyful rendition of Christmas favourites and popular songs on the organ, played and sung by Shelley with superb backing sound provided by her husband Chris. What a marvelous treat this was for the residents after the morning service, which kept their toes tapping and faces smiling until they tucked into their Christmas dinner. A big thanks to Shelley and Chris for sharing part of your Christmas Day and talents entertaining the residents. It was much appreciated by all !!

Well, a cheery hello from Ramsgate. Seems a lot has happened to me in this past month. Our son from the U.K. came all the way over for a long week-end just to spend some quality time with us as we would not be seeing him for Christmas. We then spent Christmas in Somerset West with our other son and his family. We feel so strongly about family unity, and this Christmas has been a very special one for us. We hope many of you were able to spend time with family members over the Christmas season.

Back to the Village – a number of us attended Mari Webster’s “Christmas Spectacular” and all agreed the only word to describe it was “spectacular”. We left the hall feeling so happy and “Christmassy”, so thank you, Mari, for a wonderful show. We had our usual Sunday lunch-time braai on the 11th December and in spite of everyone rushing around getting ready for Christmas, we had a very good attendance. Once again, thank you Reg and June for getting the tables, crockery, cutlery etc. ready for us. Well, what a send-off we gave to 2016, with 40 villagers gathering together for our last braai of the year. There were almost gale force winds blowing outside, but we were totally protected on our patio and had a lovely festive evening. Watch out 2017, here we come! Get well wishes to Marshall MacDonald (Mac), who tore his Achilles tendon while fishing. He will be on crutches for three months in all, so Mac, you won’t have to do any dishes or other chores around the house for a while. However, we all do sympathise with you and hope that the time will go quickly for you.
