Cyclone smashes Fiji islands SOME popular Fijian resortshave been forced to close formore than four months after thisweek’s Cyclone Evan tore aswathe through the Mamanucas. Castaway Island Resort wasdirectly in the path of the stormand has sustained significantdamage which will see it closeuntil 01 Apr 2013. It’s understood that almost allof the island’s bures require re-roofing, with Castaway currentlystill without power or internetconnections. All bookings have beencancelled until 31 Mar, withclients urged to contact theirtravel agents to process refunds. Other hard-hit propertiesinclude Likuliku, Yasawa IslandResort and Malolo Island resorts,all of which will also be closeduntil Apr, according to an update
from Tourism Fiji. Some resorts are still open andoperational including Lomani,Plantation, Tokoriki and Viwa,while a range of others are set toopen in about a week’s time, suchas Vomo, Bounty Island, TreasureIsland and Beachcomber. Musket Cove, Blue Lagoon,Mana Island and Amanuca Islandwill all open in time for Christmas. On the mainland, most hotelsare operating after minor repairs -however the Westin at Denarau isclosed for roof and airconditioning repairs. Tourism Fiji said all Coral Coasthotels and resorts are fullyoperational, while around Nadithe Novotel, Tanoa Apartmentsand Trans International are allopen but with some reduction inroom inventories. All flights in and out of Fiji haveresumed, with Air Pacific ceoDave Pflieger releasing a videoshowcasing the country’srecovery from the cyclone. CX-NZ codeshare start CATHAY Pacific and Air NewZealand have today launchedcodeshare sales on each other’sflights between Auckland andHong Kong. Finnair to Xian FINNISH flag carrier Finnair hasfurther expanded its network ofAsian destinations, with plans tofly to Xian in China from 14 Jun. Finnair will operate threeweekly direct Helsinki-Xianservices over the summer seasonuntil 26 Oct, with the route beingthe first direct connection fromEurope to the Chinese city. Finnair also flies to Beijing,Shanghai, Hong Kong andChongqing in China.
QF seeks interim tickfor EK pact, again QANTAS has resubmitted anapplication for interimauthorisation of its alliance withEmirates, following yesterday’sACCC draft ruling in favour of thewide-ranging partnership. A spokesperson told TD thismorning that if granted, interimauthorisation “would allow Qantasand Emirates to discuss elementsincluding pricing and capacity. “It would also allow us to startselling seats on each other’snetworks,” he said. The airlines initially submittedapplications for interimauthorisation when the alliancewas proposed, but later withdrewthe requests in favour of makingother preparations which did notrequire them to cooperate. There’s no firm timeline on whenthe ACCC will rule on the interimauthorisation application, with QFhoping for an early Feb decision.

NANJING is gearing up to sendoff the first flight to Sydney witha ceremony planned at its airporttonight when China Easternlaunches three-times weekly non-stop service to the Harbour City. It's a big deal for the airline andthe city fathers, because thereare very few flights tointernational cities direct fromNanjing, so the excitement in theair here is palpable. TD travelled from Shanghai toNanjing and experienced for thefirst time the very fast bullet trainlinking the two cities, a 350 kmtrip that takes 4 hours by road,but only 90 minutes by train. Before boarding at Shanghai'shuge main railway station, a signgreets you wiith “Welcome toTake the Bullet Train” - a signthat made us smile said, this wayto the ‘Soft Seat Waiting Room’. Once leaving, it wasn't longbefore the train was speedingthrough the countryside, hitting302 kms as shown on the rollingLED indicator. The ride was smooth andcomfortable with reclining seats& large windows in the carriagesso you can watch the ever-changing landscape whizz by. Cost for the trip was $25, andannouncements are made inEnglish; signs at the stations andon the rains are also in English. With Harmony Trains nowserving major centres from northto south and east to west inChina, it's a cheap way to getaround & definitely the way to go.
‘Business as usual’ for TCF THE Board of the TravelCompensation Fund says it has“no option” but to continueoperating under the current TrustDeed, despite the pending wind-up of the TCF under the TravelIndustry Transition Plan. The TITP, approved by consumeraffairs ministers from around thecountry earlier this month, willsee the prudential supervision ofTCF participants cease as early as01 Jul 2013, but in the meantimeit’s “business as usual”. In an update issued thismorning, the TCF says that a newTrust Deed is being preparedreflecting the proposed changes,but until this is in place existingarrangements affecting TCFparticipants will continue for thetime being.
In particular, this means that forparticipants which have recentlyjoined, and for those who joinprior to the TITP beingimplemented, “the currentcontribution and fee arrangementswill remain in place”. “However when change occurs,the Board has decided it willreview recent past arrangementsand fees paid by agents, to seewhether some financialrecognition by way of rebateswould be in order,” the TCF said. TCF participants will be keptinformed of developments on amonthly basis, the update said.

REGIONAL Express achieved thehighest level of on-time flightdepartures and arrivals amongAustralian carriers during Nov. According to govt data releasedthis morning, 87.1% and 82.6% ofREX’s services got away andarrived as scheduled. Of the major domestic carriers,Qantas led the way with 84.3%departing and 80.6% arriving ontime, closely followed by VirginAustralia at 83.6% and 77.1%. Low-cost carriers (LCC) TigerAirways and Jetstar trailed theirfull service counterparts duringthe month, with the carriersachieving 76.6% and 75.1% forpush-backs respectively. Their positions were reversedfor arrivals, with Jetstar having74.3% of its services land on timeand Tiger Airways 72.7%. QantasLink scored the highest
percentage of cancellations inNov, at 1.9%, whereas Skywesthad just 0.2% of its flights axed. Cancellations were highest onthe Canberra-Sydney route at 3.9%. The Launceston-Sydney routehad the lowest percentage of ontime departures at 58.2%. At 93.1%, Mildura Airport wasbest at getting flights out on timewhile Ayers Rock Airport was theleast efficient at 60%. MEANWHILE, the Bureau ofIntrastructure, Transport andRegional Economics’ Domestic AirFare Index, also released today,has shown Business Class faresfalling to their lowest level onrecord in Dec 2012. ‘Best Discount’ fares have risento their highest Dec level in 5 yrs.
Jetstar props up stats BIG increases in passengerscarried across Jetstar internationaland Jetstar Asia operations offsetcontinued drops in Qantas int’lservices, according to QF monthlyperformance figures for Nov. Across domestic, internationaland Asian networks, JQ postedpax traffic climbs of 9.2%, 13.8%and 15.1% respectively. Passenger traffic on Qantas Int’loperations fell 4.9% for themonth, with in-line capacity cutsstabilising average loads, whichclimbed 0.6% off the back. Qantas Domestic saw a 1.7%jump in traffic for Nov, helpedalong by strong Qantaslink stats.
