Miyazaki International College Fall 2014
Course Title (Credits) SA202 Independent Study (4 credits) Course Designation for TC N/A Time and Location Tuesdays 9:00-‐10:50 and Thursdays 13:00-‐14:50
2-‐303, Library, CCR Instructor Sara Johanna Sandberg Email address [email protected]‐mic.ac.jp Office/Ext 1-‐408 (Ext.# 733) Office hours Mondays 13:00-‐14:30 and Thursdays 13:00-‐14:30 Course Description The course consists of three parts: Culture through cinema In this part of the course, students watch two films from English-‐speaking countries every week, one during a lesson and the other as homework. The second film will be available in the MIC library, but students may chose to view it elsewhere. Before viewing, students will be assigned ‘viewing roles’ which will rotate weekly. Students will prepare a short text (min. 400 words) based on their assignment (models are provided on Moodle) and post them on a Moodle forum by deadline. Students will then comment on each other’s postings. Each week an hour-‐long session will be held held where students discuss and compare the two films. After three weeks a larger writing assignment will be given. Students will post a draft on Moodle for peer-‐feedback before final submission. English vocabulary In this part of the course student will engage in individual vocabulary study suitable to their level (Academic vocabulary 1 and 2, TOEIC vocabulary 1 or Challenging vocabulary). Every two weeks students will study one set of words via Quizlet (and possibly other tools). Most of this study will take place outside of class, but students will meet for an hour a week to review and take quizzes. Independent Research Paper In this part of the course students will write a 10-‐page research paper comparing the cultures of English speaking countries with each other or with Japan. Students will draw on what they have learned from the films watched during the semester as well as other secondary sources such as encyclopedias, newspaper articles and journal articles found online and in the MIC library. Students will use appropriate academic language and correct APA citation throughout. Course Goals/Objectives Culture Through Cinema • expose students to cultures of English speaking countries and improve listening skills. • improve speaking and writing skills (incl. how to cite films and reviews according to APA) through oral and written discussion and analysis of films. • develop critical thinking skills by reflecting on content of films and relating them to real events and circumstances as well as personal experience. English Vocabulary and Reading • improve English vocabulary knowledge Independent Research Paper • academic writing • research methods and APA citation

Exam Week Required Materials Materials will be provided by instructor. Students will be required to access some on-‐line materials on their own. Course Policies (Attendance, etc.) Attendance and punctuality are important. Inform your teacher in advance if you know that you will be absent. Medical absences require a doctor’s note. If you miss more than five lessons you will be advised to withdraw. If you miss a class, make sure to get all handouts and homework assignments from your teacher or classmates BEFORE the next class. All materials will also be available on Moodle. In order to be able to participate actively in class you must bring all required materials to lessons. Hand in all assignments on time. Late submissions will not be accepted. NOTE: If for some reason your personal situation has an impact on your studies, inform your teacher. Student Preparation and Review Time Students are expected to spend at least one hour preparing for every hour of lesson, and one hour reviewing and doing homework. That adds up to approximately 8 hours of individual study per week. Approximately 2h/week will be required to watch a film. That leaves 6h for review, writing assignments, and individual vocabulary work. Grades and Grading Culture through Cinema (2/3 of course grade)
