Twenty-fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time September 15, 2019

From the Pastor

Dcn. Abel CortesDcn. Larry LucidoDcn. Bob Marrinan

Dcn. Brian MitchellDcn. Peter Raad

Dear Parishioners,

Saints Days this week: September 16th is the feast of Saint Cornelius, pope and

martyr, and Saint Cyprian, the first African bishop to be martyred. September

17th is the feast of St. Robert Bellarmine, bishop and doctor of the Church, who

was a brilliant Jesuit scholar. He was a key player in the Counter Reformation of

the Church and is the patron of catechists and catechumens. September 19th is

St. Januarius, bishop and martyr, who was thrown to the bears for his faith. He is

patron of Naples, Italy. September 20th is St. Andrew Kim Tae-gon, priest, and St.

Paul Chong Hasang, and companion martyrs, who gave their lives for their faith in

Korea. And finally, St. Matthew the Apostle and Evangelist is September 21st. He

is the patron of accountants and customs officers.

As we study the lives of the saints, they help us to realize we are all in need of

repentance. Our Lord continually invites us to come to our senses and come back

to His love, mercy, and forgiveness. Remember, the grace of God is abundant

through His Body, the Church! And we, members of the Body of Christ, can help

show the way back to Christ. Through our prayer, our sacrifice, our corporal and

spiritual works of mercy, and by frequenting the Sacrament of Penance we can be

examples in faith for others to follow as we struggle on the journey of conversion

toward Christ. Let us ask the intercession of the saints as we work our way back

to the Father.

Ember Days: In the old days back before the Second Vatican Council, the Church

used to set aside certain days of the year called Ember Days. These days were

built upon formerly pagan celebrations of the seasons as they happened near the

beginning of the Winter, Spring, Summer and Fall. Holy Mother the Church saw

a great opportunity to transform these pagan celebrations into opportunities to

give thanks to God for the blessings of rest, growth, recreation and harvest. Thus,

she set aside three days so that the faithful could have time for prayer, fasting,

and for spiritual renewal to coincide with the blessings of the season. This time of

the year, the Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday following the Exaltation of the Holy

Cross (Sept. 14th) were observed as Ember Days to end the season of Summer

and begin the season of Autumn, a time to give thanks to God for the first fruits of

the harvest. Even though Ember Days are not “official” days anymore, we might

remember to give thanks to God on the 18th, the 20th, and the 21st of this month

for all we have been able to harvest due to God’s mercy and benevolence.

In Christ,Fr. Guadagnoli, Pastor

Padre Guadagnoli
