The Mini Spray Dryer B-290 is the la-boratory equipment of your choicefor the quick and gentle drying topowder of liquid end products. Theimpressive features of the SprayDryer include its efficient perfor-mance with very short set-up times,an effective integrated nozzle clea-ning mechanism and a high degreeof flexibility thanks to the different cy-linder geometries. Whether the re-quirement is the gentle drying of na-tural product dyestuffs, the isolation

of highly effective pharmaceuticalactive agents, or the micro-encapsu-lation of aromas the B-290s out-standing features greatly extends thenumber of applications that are pos-sible with a spray drying process.

    3Spray Drying

a fascinating Process with many Advantages

Many products are preferentially used in solid form. This simplifies storage and metering, and it may be essential forthe application for which the compound is to be used. Spray drying is a speedy, time-saving and gentle method ofobtaining even the smallest quantities of substances in powder form. The advantages compared with freeze dryingare the greater throughput rate and the short process times. The very short residence times and the cooling effectresulting from evaporation makes it possible to process even temperature-sensitive products in a gentle manner. Ifthe use of organic solvents is involved, the thermal load is reduced to a minimum.

The Mini Spray Dryer B-290 innovative solutions for spray drying in thelaboratory

Not only does the Mini Spray Dryer B-290make it possible to obtain powder directlyfrom a solution but many other pro-cesses can also be completed in a singlestage:

Modification of particle sizeAgglomeration of nanoparticles Drying suspensions Particle coatingImmobilization of liquids and solid ma-terials in a matrix

    Manufacture of microcapsules

Variable gas flow control for optimaloperation

The standard method of operation for theMini Spray Dryer B-290 is in a suctionmode. The reduced-pressure environ-ment within the system prevents anypossible contamination in the case of aleakage. The system can be very easilyconverted to operate under pressurewhich prevents the aspirator from beingattacked by corrosive media. All partsthat come into contact with the productare readily accessible for cleaning.

The operating panel displays all the func-tions in a clear manner. In addition to thesettings of the spray parameters, the in-put- and output temperatures are dis-played. The integral nozzle-cleaning de-vice permits automatic or manual clean-ing at selected intervals, or allows themanual insertion of a needle through thenozzle to prevent blockages or to remedythem.

The two-fluid nozzle is a superb illustra-tion of what may be achieved by combi-nation of novel design functionality andhigh precision manufacturing. A ruby witha highly precise aperture is set in the tipof the nozzle cap. This guarantees repro-ducible and trouble-free spraying overlong periods. The nozzle may also bethermostatically controlled.

Two different versions of the glass cylin-ders make it possible to optimize the yielddepending on the process. The lateraloutlet cylinder is particularly suitable foraqueous products which are difficult todry, whilst the second type of cylinderwith a vertical outlet geometry is es-pecially useful for work involving organicsolvents.

The assembly of the glass parts is amaz-ingly fast, elegant and simple. The glasscylinder can be inserted with a single man-ual movement of a locking lever.

    Inert Loop B295

    Spray drying with organic solvents

At last it is possible to safely carry out laboratory scale spray drying of organic solvents by using the accessory InertLoop B-295! Previously, spray drying of inflammable solvents was associated with the risk of explosion and was con-sequently prohibited. However, important new areas of research and applications necessitate the use of spray dryingfrom an organic solvent base. To be able to respond to this challenge a new type of accessory has been developedwhich allows the user to work safely with almost all currently available solvents!

Inert Loop B-295 With the accent on safety

The cooling block is assembled as a mo-bile unit and is connected to the MiniSpray Dryer B-290 via two hose connec-tions and a communication cable. Twosignal lamps display the condition of theintegrated oxygen and pressure monitor-ing system. Should a fault develop, thecircuit automatically switches the equip-ment to a safe condition. The system hasbeen certified by the Swiss Institute of Sa-

    fety.

The following solvents havebeen tested and can be usedwithout reservation: Methanol EthanolToluene HexaneAcetone Ethylacetate Dichloromethane*

For water, we recommend to use theB-296 (see next page)

    B Product

    C Waste gas

    D Solvent

Adsorption columnIf mixtures of organic solvents and waterare used, we strongly recommend theadditional adsorption column in theclosed loop system. The separationprevents water from freezing in the InertLoop B-295 and potentially damaging theheat exchanger. The humidity is detectedby a sensor. As soon as a critical thresholdis exceeded as the column is saturated,

the feed pump is stopped and themolecular sieve has to be exchanged orregenerated.

To safely spray dry inflammable solvents,a new operating principle is employedwhich uses a combination of the SprayDryer B-290 and the Inert Loop B-295 toprovide a closed loop circulation underinert conditions. The absence of oxygenprevents the formation of a ignitable mix-ture. At the same time, the solvent con-tained in the gas stream is cooled andconsequently condensed. The regener-

ated flow is then returned again to thespray dryer.

    5Dehumidifier B296

Year round Reproducibility and closed loop operation

The Dehumidifier B-296 is a versatile instrumentfor different applications:

Inlet air ConditioningAir humidity changes occurring between different seasonsand regions affect the Spray drying process. By using the newDehumidifier B-296, the drying conditions are exactly definedand made reproducible by removing the water content witha cold trap at 5 C. The integrated hygrometer displays the airhumidity.

Closed loop with aqueous solutionsFor the use of aqueous solutions or mixtures with less than

50% organic solvents, we recommend the DehumidifierB-296 due to the risk of freezing causing damage in the In-ert Loop B-295. The additional pre-heat exchanger allows

the efficient condensation resulting in a dry product.

Inlet air chillerWhen using the spray chilling accessory (see next page) theinlet air can be cooled by the B-296 to produce optimalsolidification, making the Dehumidifier the right choice for thisapplication.

Spray Chilling World novelty in the lab-scale

When a melting is dispersed into a cold gas stream, the dropletsare solidified into particles and can thus be separated. Thematrix substance and the active ingredients are heated abovethe melting point. The nozzle is also heated to prevent anyblocking. No additional thermostat is required, as the existingheating control and peristaltic pump in the instrument are used.If the sample has a low melting point, then the inlet air is cooledto increase the temperature gradient. If lower temperatures than10C (provided by the B-296) are used, e.g. for hard fats, theinlet air can be cooled to 5C by using a specially developedrefrigeration unit. (Please contact your local distributor). Highest

    melting point is 70 C.

Typical encapsulation examples are:Vitamins dissolved in fat Lypophilic active agents in glyceridesMicrocapsules for cosmetics
