BCE’s MissionThe Boston Choral Ensemble creates a fun, friendly, and open atmosphere for the musical development of musicians and audiences in the Greater Boston area. Members of the Boston Choral Ensemble grow musically, both as individuals and as an ensemble, through the rehearsal and performance of challenging, high-quality music. We strengthen Greater Boston’s choral community by: making choral music accessible and interesting to all listeners, regardless of musical background; developing musical interest and ability in young adult musicians; and collaborating with other local musicians.

Dear Friends,Welcome to the final concert of the Boston Choral Ensemble’s 6th season. We’re so glad you could join us today. It’s been a busy season, and it’s hard to believe the BCE year is drawing to a close. Since the Fall, BCE has:

• Welcomed 13 new members• Designed and run our first annual BCE Skills Retreat• Performed twice with the Back Bay Ringers, a Boston-based handbell choir• Prepared a rarely performed modern work, Arvo Part’s Passio, with guest

soloists, chamber ensemble, and organ• Offered our music in several Arlington Street Church services, where we

are artists-in-residence• Collaborated with Dedham High School choral director Nick Nicholson,

performing in a joint concert with his students• Participated for the first time in the annual Walk for Music, raising over

$3,500 toward strengthening BCE programs, offerings, and outreach• Stretched ourselves musically and organizationally—and continued to

think of new ways to make the organization stronger for its members and audiences… so there will be plenty to work on in the years to come!

I’ve had the pleasure of serving as president of the Boston Choral Ensemble board of directors, a very talented, hard-working, and sociable crew of BCE members who give their time to help us hit our organizational goals, make concerts happen, and generally get things done. Many, many thanks to Matt Baggetta, Sara Willis, Robert McGilvray, Zack Howard, and of course our fearless director Miguel Felipe, all of whom have been the best partners possible. Beyond the board, many members have also stepped up this year to give feedback, make decisions, run projects, and generally support the group. You’re great! Thank you.This is my last concert with the BCE in the foreseeable future (my husband and I are moving to North Carolina in the summer), and it’s always the ending of good things that helps you appreciate what you’ve had. I was lucky to be brought into the BCE 3 years ago. This organization serves a purpose to its members in a way few can, offering busy people like us—grad students, young professionals, new parents, and everyone else—a place to reconnect with the pure joy of creating music with other people, and the joy of sharing that creation with an audience. I’d like to thank the BCE for that opportunity. It’s been one of my favorite parts of living here, and I know that the BCE will continue to go after its mission in a “fun, friendly, and open” way, just as our mission says.And to you, the audience, thank you for taking the time to come out and hear us… you, of course, make all of this possible and worthwhile. From BCE’s Music Director

Dear Patrons,Welcome to today’s concert at the conclusion of the Boston Choral En-semble’s sixth season.Over BCE’s history, American music has always figured largely in our programming. We’ve performed works by our own in-house cadre of composers including founder, Tom Cunningham, and assistant director, Ezra Keshet. We’ve also included works by some of the giants of Ameri-can composition such as Copland and Bernstein. I’m also happy to report that BCE has offered premiere performances (at least regional premieres) of new works on several occasions. All this is only to say that America has a long and rich tradition of choral music and BCE’s been proud to include American works on many of our programs.This year, however, I wanted to focus on Americana. Along with you and the singers, I hoped to experience the range of styles from the awk-ward and raucous Billings of 18th century Boston, to the European-influ-enced Copland and Barber of the 20th century. BCE also continues its tra-dition of exploring new territory as we offer the premiere performance of the mixed voice version of Bruce Fithian’s American Triptych and our own Josh Stoddard’s Psalm 23. Finally, BCE let’s down it’s hair (a bit) with a closing set of three traditional spirituals—some in not-so-traditional arrangements.While few threads can be drawn across our program, I think it’s safe to say that all works offer a sense of immediacy, clarity, and directness. In each work the composer’s voice is immediately heard whether it’s the young Aaron Copland and Josh Stoddard or the refined and masterful Samuel Barber and Irving Fine.I hope you enjoy this quick tour through Americana. It’s a fun program with a piece for nearly every listener! Enjoy the music and we look for-ward to seeing you in our seventh season.
