BCE’s MissionThe Boston Choral Ensemble creates a fun, friendly, and open atmosphere for the musical development of musicians and audiences in the Greater Boston area. Members of the Boston Choral Ensemble grow musically, both as individuals and as an ensemble, through the rehearsal and performance of challenging, high-quality music. We strengthen Greater Boston’s choral community by: making choral music accessible and interesting to all listeners, regardless of musical background; developing musical interest and ability in young adult musicians; and collaborating with other local musicians.

From BCE’s Board President
Dear Friends,Welcome to the final concert of the Boston Choral Ensemble’s 6th season. We’re so glad you could join us today. It’s been a busy season, and it’s hard to believe the BCE year is drawing to a close. Since the Fall, BCE has:
• Welcomed 13 new members• Designed and run our first annual BCE Skills Retreat• Performed twice with the Back Bay Ringers, a Boston-based handbell choir• Prepared a rarely performed modern work, Arvo Part’s Passio, with guest
soloists, chamber ensemble, and organ• Offered our music in several Arlington Street Church services, where we
are artists-in-residence• Collaborated with Dedham High School choral director Nick Nicholson,
performing in a joint concert with his students• Participated for the first time in the annual Walk for Music, raising over
$3,500 toward strengthening BCE programs, offerings, and outreach• Stretched ourselves musically and organizationally—and continued to
think of new ways to make the organization stronger for its members and audiences… so there will be plenty to work on in the years to come!
I’ve had the pleasure of serving as president of the Boston Choral Ensemble board of directors, a very talented, hard-working, and sociable crew of BCE members who give their time to help us hit our organizational goals, make concerts happen, and generally get things done. Many, many thanks to Matt Baggetta, Sara Willis, Robert McGilvray, Zack Howard, and of course our fearless director Miguel Felipe, all of whom have been the best partners possible. Beyond the board, many members have also stepped up this year to give feedback, make decisions, run projects, and generally support the group. You’re great! Thank you. This is my last concert with the BCE in the foreseeable future (my husband and I are moving to North Carolina in the summer), and it’s always the ending of good things that helps you appreciate what you’ve had. I was lucky to be brought into the BCE 3 years ago. This organization serves a purpose to its members in a way few can, offering busy people like us—grad students, young professionals, new parents, and everyone else—a place to reconnect with the pure joy of creating music with other people, and the joy of sharing that creation with an audience. I’d like to thank the BCE for that opportunity. It’s been one of my favorite parts of living here, and I know that the BCE will continue to go after its mission in a “fun, friendly, and open” way, just as our mission says. And to you, the audience, thank you for taking the time to come out and hear us… you, of course, make all of this possible and worthwhile. Enjoy the concert, and join us again in the Fall!Best wishes,
Andrea Meacham Rosal,2006 – 2007 Board President, Boston Choral Ensemble

From BCE’s Music Director
Dear Patrons,Welcome to today’s concert at the conclusion of the Boston Choral En-semble’s sixth season.Over BCE’s history, American music has always figured largely in our programming. We’ve performed works by our own in-house cadre of composers including founder, Tom Cunningham, and assistant director, Ezra Keshet. We’ve also included works by some of the giants of Ameri-can composition such as Copland and Bernstein. I’m also happy to report that BCE has offered premiere performances (at least regional premieres) of new works on several occasions. All this is only to say that America has a long and rich tradition of choral music and BCE’s been proud to include American works on many of our programs. This year, however, I wanted to focus on Americana. Along with you and the singers, I hoped to experience the range of styles from the awk-ward and raucous Billings of 18th century Boston, to the European-influ-enced Copland and Barber of the 20th century. BCE also continues its tra-dition of exploring new territory as we offer the premiere performance of the mixed voice version of Bruce Fithian’s American Triptych and our own Josh Stoddard’s Psalm 23. Finally, BCE let’s down it’s hair (a bit) with a closing set of three traditional spirituals—some in not-so-traditional arrangements. While few threads can be drawn across our program, I think it’s safe to say that all works offer a sense of immediacy, clarity, and directness. In each work the composer’s voice is immediately heard whether it’s the young Aaron Copland and Josh Stoddard or the refined and masterful Samuel Barber and Irving Fine.I hope you enjoy this quick tour through Americana. It’s a fun program with a piece for nearly every listener! Enjoy the music and we look for-ward to seeing you in our seventh season.
Best wishes,
Miguel Felipe Music Director, Boston Choral Ensemble

Modern MusicWilliam BillingsWe are met for a Concert of modern
Invention; To tickle the Ear is our present Intention. The Audience are seated expecting to be
treatedWith a Piece of the Best. And since we all agree to set the Tune
on E,The Author’s darling Key he prefers to
the Rest,Let the Bass take the Lead and firmly
proceed,Till the Parts are agreed to fuge away.Let the Tenor succeed and follow the
Lead,Till the Parts are agreed to fuge away.Let the Counter inspire the Rest of the
Choir,Inflam’d with Desire to fuge away.Let the Treble in the Rear no longer
forbear,But expressly declare for a Fuge away. Then change to brisker TimeAnd up the Ladder climb, and down
again; Then mount the second Time and end
the Strain. Then change the Key to pensive Tonesand slow in treble Time; the Notes
exceeding lowKeep down a While, then rise by slow
Degrees; The Process surely will not fail to please.Thro’ Common and Treble we jointly
have run; We’ll give you their Essence
compounded in one.Altho’ we are strongly attach’d to the
Rest,Six-four is the Movement that pleases
us best. And now we address you as Friends to
the Cause;
Performers are modest and write their own Laws.
Altho’ we are sanguine and clap at the Bars,
‘Tis the Part of the Hearers to clap their Applause.
Wondrous LoveThe Sacred HarpWhat wondrous love is this, O my soul,
O my soul? What wondrous love is this, O my soul? What wondrous love is thisthat brings my heart such bliss,And takes away the painof my soul, of my soul,And takes away the pain of my soul? What wondrous love is this, O my soul,
O my soul? What wondrous love is this, O my soul? What wondrous love is thisthat caused the Lord of lifeto lay aside his crownfor my soul, for my soul,to lay aside his crown for my soul.To God and to the Lamb, I will sing, I
will sing,To God and to the Lamb, I will sing.To God and to the Lamb, Who is the great I Am, While millions join the theme,I will sing, I will sing,While millions join the theme,I will sing.
WindhamThe Sacred HarpThough I may speak with bravest fire,And have the gift to all inspire Yet have not love, my words are vain as sounding brass and hopeless gain.Though I may give all I possess,And striving so my love profess,But not be given by love within,The profit soon turns strangely thin.

Lord of the DanceSydney CarterI danced in the morningWhen the world was begun,And I danced in the moonAnd the stars and the sun,And I came down from heavenAnd I danced on the earth,At BethlehemI had my birth.
Dance, then, wherever you may be,I am the Lord of the Dance, said he,And I’ll lead you all, wherever you may
be,And I’ll lead you all in the Dance, said he.
I danced for the scribeAnd the pharisee,But they would not dance And they wouldn’t follow me.I danced for the fishermen,For James and John -They came with meAnd the Dance went on.
Dance, then, wherever you may be,I am the Lord of the Dance, said he,And I’ll lead you all, wherever you may
be,And I’ll lead you all in the Dance, said he.
I danced on the SabbathAnd I cured the lame; The holy peopleSaid it was a shame. They whipped and they strippedAnd they hung me on high,And they left me thereOn a Cross to die.
Dance, then, wherever you may be,I am the Lord of the Dance, said he,And I’ll lead you all, wherever you may
be,And I’ll lead you all in the Dance, said he.
I danced on a FridayWhen the sky turned black -It’s hard to dance
With the devil on your back. They buried my bodyAnd they thought I’d gone,But I am the Dance,And I still go on.
Dance, then, wherever you may be,I am the Lord of the Dance, said he,And I’ll lead you all, wherever you may
be,And I’ll lead you all in the Dance, said he.
They cut me downAnd I leapt up high;I am the lifeThat’ll never, never die;I’ll live in youIf you’ll live in me -I am the LordOf the Dance, said he.
Dance, then, wherever you may be,I am the Lord of the Dance, said he,And I’ll lead you all, wherever you may
be,And I’ll lead you all in the Dance, said he.

Psalm 23BibleThe Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.He makes me lie down in green
pastures; He leads me beside still waters. He restores my soul; He leads me in the paths of
righteousness For His name’s sake.Even though I walk through the valley,
the valley of death, I fear no evil; For Thou art with me; Thy rod and Thy staff comfort me. You prepar’st a table before me in the
presence of my enemies; Thou anointest my head with oil; My cup overflows.Surely goodness and mercy shall follow
me All the days of my life; And I shall dwell in the house of

O Know to End as to BeginBen Jonson (1573 – 1637)O know to end, as to begin:A minute’s loss in love is sin. These humors will the night out-wearIn their own pastimes here; You do our rites much wrong,In seeking to prolongThese outward pleasures:The night hath other treasuresThan these, though long conceal’d,Ere day to be reveal’d.Then, know to end, as to begin;A minute’s loss in love is sin.

Before the soil hath smutch’d it? Have you felt the wool of beaver, Or swan’s down ever?[Or have smelt o’ the bud o’ the brier, Or the nard in the fire?] Or have tasted the bag of the bee? O so white, O so soft, O so sweet is she!
O, do not wanton with those eyes
Ben Jonson (1573 – 1637)O, do not wanton with those eyes,Lest I be sick with seeing;Nor cast them down, but let them rise,Lest shame destroy their being.O, be not angry with those fires,For then their threats will kill me;Nor look to kind on my desires,For then my hopes will spill me.O, do not steep them in thy tears,For so will sorrow slay me;Nor spread them as distract with fears,Mine own eyes enough betray me.
Against JealousyBen JonsonWretched and foolish Jealousy, How cam’st thou thus to enter me? I ne’er was of thy kind: Nor have I yet the narrow mind To vent that poor desire, That others should not warm them at
my fire: I wish the sun should shine On all men’s fruit, and flowers, as well
as mine. But under the disguise of love, Thou say’st, thou only cam’st to prove What my affections were. Think’st thou that love is help’d by
fear? Go, get thee quickly forth, Love’s sickness, and his noted want of
worth. Seek doubting men to please; I ne’er will owe my health to a disease.
LamentBen JonsonSlow, slow, fresh fount, keep time with
my salt tears;Yet, slower, yet; O faintly, gentle
springs:List to the heavy part the music bears,Woe weeps out her division, when she
sings. Droop herbs, and flowers, Fall grief in showers, Our beauties are not ours: O, I could still,Like melting snow upon some craggy
hill, Drop, drop, drop, drop,Since nature’s pride is, now, a withered
daffodil.
The Hour-glassBen JonsonDo but consider this small dustHere running in the glass, By atoms moved;Could you believe that this The body was Of one that loved? And in his mistress’ flame, playing like
a fly,Turned to cinders by her eye?Yes; and in death, as life, unblessed, To have’t expressed,Even ashes of lovers find no rest.
