MEYERTON. - A delegation of governmentofficials from Kenya visited the Midvaal LocalMunicipality on April 28, to learn more abouta performance system used by the municipali-ty.

Five delegates attended from a county inKenya, and they travelled to the Govan MbekiLocal Municipality as well as Midvaal. The

performance system in which they were intere-sted is the E-Perform system developed by Pri-ce Waterhouse and Coopers. According to le-gislation, every municipality in South Africamust have in place a performance managementsystem used for monitoring and reporting pur-poses, to ensure that targets and objectives aremet. Midvaal uses the E-perform system to

achieve this. According to Midvaal’s munici-pal manager, Mr Albert de Klerk, one of thelessons learned through this meeting was thatSouth Africa is still a young relative to otherAfrican counties. One of the examples he no-ted was that Kenya has adopted systems of go-vernance very close to the legislation used bySouth Africa in terms of the Systems and Fi-

nancial Acts of South African Local Govern-ment, but a few years ahead of South Africa.There were discussions regarding the possibi-lity of Midvaal Local Municipality workingmore closely with their Kenyan counterpartsin the future on projects relating to performan-ce systems, IT, governance and the role of agri-culture in the economy and society.

MEYERTON. - The Paws on the PavementDog Walk, presented by the SPCA Vereeni-ging/Meyerton was held on May 1 at the Mid-vaal Sport & Conference Centre.

“The funds raised from this fundraising ini-tiative will be put into good use this month,providing care and assistance to many needyanimals in our district,” says SPCA ma-nager Marlien Pieterse.

“As you know we get no fundingfrom the government and in order tokeep our doors open and our wheels tur-ning we fundraise through events likethese to make ends meet.”

As a non-profit organisation they total-ly rely upon the goodwill of the commu-nity, businesses, suppliers, supporters andvolunteers to make these fundraisers asuccess.

“We would like to give a ‘paw-felt’thanks to our community, businesses, sup-pliers, supporters and volunteers for theirkindness and assistance with this fundrai-sing initiative which certainly helped makethe day a success.

“We thank you from the bottom of ourhearts for your participation,” says Marlien.

For the SPCA staff it was fabulous to seeso many happy, healthy animals in one placewhilst their owners were walking aroundproudly, presenting them to the public.

This sort of loving kindness to animals gi-ve the SPCA staff motivation to face theirdaily tasks.

“This highlights the fact the the communitysupports and recognises our daily efforts,

even though it sometimes feels like a than-kless task,” concludes Marlien.

* The SPCA will continue to speak forthose who cannot speak for themselves withthe support of the community, and togetherwe can make a difference in all animal welfare.

MIDVAAL. - The Vaal Marina Police were pa-trolling the N1 when they came across a sus-pect taxi minibus parked near the road on April13 at about 05:40. Communication officerConstable Brandy Matumise says that as theyapproached the driver of the white ToyotaQuantum, he tried to hide something undersome trees nearby before running off on foot

- leaving a 27-year-old passenger behind. The police searched the passenger as well

as the taxi. They found 17 bags of dagga weigh-ing in at 192,6kg with a street value of R600000. The passenger alleged that he is innocentand had no idea what the driver was up to. “Ihitch-hiked from Durban and I am on my wayhome to Katlehong Hostel near Vosloorus,” hetold the police.

The man was arrested and chargedwith dealing. He appeared at the Mey-erton Magistrates Court before thematter was postponed for further in-vestigation to May 13. The 27- year-old suspect was granted R3000 bailwith conditions.

A new generation of drug and alcohol abuse fighters has risenin the Vaal. Unemployed township youths are using dramaand peer education to appeal directly at grass-roots level totackle the region’s out-of-control drug and alcohol epidemic.

Vukuzakhe! – Let the youth empower others! – is the callto action of this National Lottery Trust-funded project bySANCA VAAL launched last week in Vanderbijlpark.

Vukuzakhe members were professionally trained in dramafor three months by Bloemfontein playwright GertjanHoltzhausen of Lion Hearts Productions.

No-one is more passionate about the persuasion power ofdrama than Vukuzakhe co-ordinator Mthunzi Mthimkulu(33), who completed an intensive 3-month course withHoltzhausen in Sebokeng starting in December 2014.

“We want to give back to our communities through Vuku-zakhe,” he said.

About 70% of patients treated by SANCA VAAL are ‘nya-ope’ (dagga and heroin) addicts, and of these, 70 % are chil-dren and youth, according to Magriet Botha, SANCA VAALdirector.

“Live performance has a unique capacity to stimulate andengage the mind, feelings and imaginations as well as to con-front in a non-judgmental way,” Botha added.

This is echoed by project leader Mthunzi, bringing a mes-sage of love and hope to the community.

“The training programme was very challenging butbrought a massive change to all of us. Those who wander(use alcohol and drugs) are not necessarily lost,” said Mthim-kulu.

In a bid to continually serve its audience better, OFM -the sound of central South Africa - will soon be movingits studio from the Emerald Resort and Casino in Vander-bijlpark. Nick Efstathiou, OFM general manager says,“Emerald Resort and Casino has graciously hosted us forthree years. We are now extremely excited to move ourstudio to new premises within the next few months. IsabelPotgieter will be giving birth to her first in July this yearand during her maternity leave we will move our operationin Vanderbijlpark to a property that feeds into our overallstrategy to grow the brand in the Vaal area.” Over the pastfew years, Isabel Potgieter and Samantha Wrightson havebroadcast the show, Mid-Morning Magic, from 09:00 to12:00 from the Emerald Resort studio. Tony Blewitt alsobroadcast his Sunday morning show, Gold Retold, from09:00 to 13:00.

Setting up the new studio will be an intricate processthat will take place over the next few months. In the meanti-me, on her return Isabel Potgieter will make use of the allnew OFM studios at the Matlosana Mall in Klerksdorp.The new Klerksdorp studio will be fully operational by Au-gust 2015. “With our new network of studios in Bloemfon-tein, Klerksdorp and Vanderbijlpark, we aim to create radioshows that are more local in flavour. We are investing inour future to better deliver our product to all of centralSouth Africa. OFM has a massive footprint in central SouthAfrica and we really don’t want to follow a ‘one size fitsall’ approach. It is important to us to make our audienceand all our stakeholders, from the Northern Cape, throughthe Free State and North West, right up to the Vaal Trianglefeel like they benefit from what we broadcast every day,”says Efstathiou.
