From way back in the day…

MCI’s Arts Café night went off in spectacular fashion on Thursday, May 24th, as students in Visual Arts, Music and Drama put on their best displays and performances. Those in attendance were treated to some great one act plays, phenomenal musical pieces and some jaw dropping art work. A big shout out to the Visual Arts, Music and Drama departments who entertained everyone with their hard work and creativity. Well done, MCI!

Music…makes the people…come together!

Last week was an incredibly busy week for the MCI Music Department with our students participating in numerous events, such as Rotunda Concerts, performing at Bill Hogarth S.S.’s Spring Concert, our very own Springtime Serenade concert and performing at Canada’s Wonderland. On Tuesday, our Grade 9s performed several pieces in the Rotunda during period 4, delighting MCI students. On Wednesday, the Senior Wind Ensemble played in the Rotunda before school, and students listening commented on how great it was to start their day with live music. The seniors and the Grade 10s performed during lunch respectively with such exciting and well-known pieces like “The Incredibles” Soundtrack and “Eighties Flashback” with such pieces as “Thriller,” “Eye of the Tiger” and “You Give Love a Bad Name.” On Wednesday night, our Senior Wind Ensemble was hosted by Bill Hogarth S.S. for their final spring concert. It was a great evening of collaboration between the two school and the music students performed “Nostalgia” together. On Thursday, it was MCI’s turn to host the Bill Hogarth S.S. Grade 10 band to join us for our final concert of the year. The hall was packed with over 200 guests and all of our various ensembles performed at a high calibre. Finally, the week finished with the Music Department attending Canada’s Wonderland Music Festival where they were adjudicated by Mr. Peter Stoll from The University of Toronto’s Faculty of Music. Mr. Stoll evaluated our performance and also took the time to do a workshop with our bands, leading them through a rehearsal. The final music event is on Wednesday, May 30, 2018 where we will host our annual Music Banquet. Tickets are $15 with a wonderful dinner, and where we will have the opportunity to recognize our students with various awards and plaques. All music students are strongly encouraged to attend this semi-formal Music Awards Banquet.

Relay for life!

Our 2018 Relay for Life

Executive team would

like to thank everyone who came out to support

our Relay this year! Thanks to the efforts of

our members and

volunteer team, we were able to exceed our

fundraising goal, raising 3900.00 for the

Canadian Cancer Society! Our afternoon

events brought out the

best of our MCI students, who played in

friendly competitions of Capture the Flag, relay

races and a "Colour fight

to end cancer"! Our final lap around the track

to honour those fighting and those we have lost

to cancer was a

thoughtful and respectful way to end a busy

season for the Community Outreach

Team.

Our executive team

would like to thank Ms. Maharaj, Ms. Dornai, Ms.

Falzarano, Ms. Braizer, Ms. Huryn, Ms. Kolviras,

Ms. Markandier for their

support!

INFORMATION ITEMS: FAMILY STUDIES DEPARTMENT

Over the last few months, Middlefield has been working in partnership with staff and students from Sutton District High School on a shared Social Justice Initiative. MCI is the school furthest South in the YRDSB and Sutton is the school furthest North in the YRDSB. The purpose of this collaboration project funded by the YRDSB Inclusive Schools and Community Services Department is for students and teachers to: share with and learn about each other, support and encourage the development of leadership skills across different school communities and to collaborate on a shared goal with a social justice focus.

We visited each other’s schools, heard presentations from York Regional Police and participated in the Sibbald Point Naturalist Tour together. Ms. Kumar-Dhillon’s Gr. 12 Equity & Social Justice class helped to lead inclusion activities so we could get to know each other better. We also spent time learning about the lack of clean water for families of Chippewas of Georgina Island. As the project draws to a close, we have a goal of encouraging all MCI and Sutton students to sign an online petition to advocate for clean water for our friends on Georgina Island. We learned so much from each other and realized despite the distance, we really are so much alike. We look forward to continuing on our learning journey.

Students of the Social Justice Team!

EXAM PREPARATION Believe it or not, but final exams start in just under 5 weeks. Now is the time to start thinking about preparing

for those final exams. Start by planning for your final exams. The people from Bright Hub Education valuable

tips:

1. Make a Schedule

Make a schedule that makes sense, and stick to it. Start your studying well in advance of exams...like

almost 5 weeks! Mark down the dates of your exams and estimate how much time you will need for each one. If

you have an exam that covers six chapters of your textbook and you need an hour per chapter, that’s at least 6

hours of studying for that subject.

2. Leave the Best for Last

If you are going to study two subjects in a night, leave your best subject until the end. That way you’ll be

focusing on your harder subject while your mind is at its best.

3. Make a Sample Final Exam

If you have extra time after you’ve gone through your material (and you will with your great schedule

and 5 weeks to study), make a sample final. Think about the type of questions your teacher might ask, as well as

the topics your teacher might think are most important. If your exam covers the full semester of work, include

questions from previous tests.

In future E-Bulletins, we’ll look into study methods and how to manage the exam itself...and the dreaded night

before.
