Middle School Winter 2018 Intensives Epic Ball Machine – Mr Aaron Burton Grades: 6-8 Limit: 20 students Fee: None We are going to make a ball machine, a big ol' impressive one. Utilizing K'nex, some physics, a pile of teamwork, and calloused fingertips, we will build a mesmerizing series of pathways for a ball to traverse in glorious extravagance. This intensive requires teamwork, perseverance, patience, creativity, and a willingness to help clean up. Winter in the Backcountry – Mr Mike Kaserman & Mr Peter Westman Grades: 6-8 Limit: 17 students Fee: $30 Explore the world famous Utah powder in the Wasatch mountains. Day trips will include cross country skiing, snowshoeing, sledding, and avalanche safety training. You will learn to efficiently travel through the snow, find a buried friend with an avalanche transceiver, and dig a snow shelter. All students will prepare a "How to" slideshow on one of the skills they have learned. You are welcome to bring your own equipment, otherwise rental equipment will be provided. Plushie Making Intensive – Ms Cynthia Stephens & Ms Jean Sutterfield Grades: 6-8 Limit: 30 students Fee: None Baby it’s cold outside! Let’s make warm and cuddly plushie creations. We will design, sew, and fabricate little stuffed animals, puppets, and pillows. We will make warm Winter hats and blankets for ourselves and donate to children in need. We will also have a collection for a clothing drive. Art History – Mr Dalton Peery Grades: 6-8 Limit: 20 students Fee: None We will be visiting the U of U Art Museum, the BYU Fine Arts Museum and art galleries downtown. We will have professional artists visit and teach us skills and practice those skills in class.

All Things Strings – Ms Lauren Posey Grades: 6-8 Limit: 15 students Fee: None Ever wondered what it would take to be a professional string musician? Here is your chance to have an in-depth study of performance, orchestra, chamber music, music theory, pedagogy, and more. The course will include visiting guests artists, as well as after school concert field trips. You must have a violin, viola, cello, or bass, and an arsenal of viola jokes! No prior experience on these instruments is necessary.

The Dragon’s Castle – Mr Erik Bowen Grades: 6-8 Limit: 24 students Fee: None Building on the history of our school building formerly being The 49th Street Galleria, participants will explore what goes into designing, establishing and operating a passion business. In addition to visiting a few local businesses, guest speakers will include business owners and those in the marketing/advertising industry. Students will be designing their own business concept and marketing

materials to pitch to a panel of experts in the Dragon’s Castle (in a Shark Tank-like fashion) at the culmination of this intensive. Frederick’s School of Magic for Muggles – Ms Jenn Frederick & Mr David Frederick Grades: 6-8 Limit: 45 students Fee: None Attention all Muggles and Squibs! At the Frederick School of Magic for Muggles, you can learn illusions and misdirection that make you look like a real wizard! We will have classes in Charms (sleight of hand), Transfiguration (stage illusions), Divination (mentalism), and History of Magic. You will learn how today’s magicians enchant their adoring audiences, and at the end of the course, you will do the same.

Social Media and Marketing in 2018 – Mr Jordan King Grades: 6-8 Limit: 20 students Fee: None How do you grab the attention of consumers in today’s world? Learn

how social media has changed the way we market in 2018. The history of marketing is interesting and full of art, drama, comedy, and music. Join us as we investigate the evolution of media marketing and learn to market in today’s world.

The Olympic Legacy – Ms Emily Glende Grades: 6-8 Limit: 22 students Fee: None The 2018 Winter Olympics are happening in Pyeongchang, South

Korea and we are going to celebrate! In this intensive, we will study the history, legacy, events, and effects of this international tradition. In addition, students will be able to practice these unique winter sports such as ice skating, curling, and broomball! We will be watching Olympic events on the big screen and celebrating the countries and athletes who make this event so wonderful. Mathematics in Art – Ms Serena Cofer Grades: 6-8 Limit: 24 students Fee: None Is there mathematics in art? Can you create art with mathematics? Come combine math with art to create various pieces of artwork. We will also be going to various Art Museums and Galleries to view the math used in art.

Dance History – Ms Tami Whatcott Grades: 6-8 Limit: 24 students Fee: None Did you know the first proof of dance comes from cave paintings found in India more than 9 thousand year ago? Or that early Jazz dance roots come from African culture imported by slaves? What about the new

waves of dance that developed during the WW1 and WW2 era? You will learn this and much, much more while we time travel with our passports to experience dance and culture throughout the ages and discover how events shapes dance even today. Piano Crash Course – Ms Kimberly Marsden Grades: 6-8 Limit: 10 students Fee: None Have you thought it might be fun to play the piano? This is your chance to spend some in-depth time at a digital piano and discover what your fingers can do, as well as jump start your note-reading abilities. We will also take a field trip to try out ancient keyboard instruments like the harpsichord and organ. This course focuses on beginner or early intermediate pianists. If you have taken one of Ms. Marsden’s group piano courses and want to keep learning, this is a great refresher and energizer. Improv Comedy – Ms Megan Sticht Grades: 6-8 Limit: 24 students Fee: None Back by popular demand: Come learn the art of improvisation with Señora Sticht and other members of her professional troupe, the

Improvables! Want to know how to make funny stuff up? Students will learn how to think on their feet, create and set a propless scene, make their fellow players look great, and most importantly--YES, and…! At the end of the two weeks, students will have the opportunity to perform in their own improv show. Stitched – Ms Roma Kalani Grades: 6-8 Limit: 20 students Fee: None Learn how to turn a drawing that represents yourself into stitched canvas artwork. Cross stitching is the art of making little x’s on canvas. By creating a drawing on graph paper, students will design and create a cross stitch that reflects their personality.

Legally Blonde Jr. – Ms Sarah Houghton & Ms Shauna Brand Grades: 6-12 Limit: 40 students Fee: None This intensive is mandatory for the Legally Blonde cast.

Personality with Photo + Design – Ms Tiffany Davilla & Caitlin Egan Grades: 6-8 Limit: 24 students Fee: None Personality workshop, learn photography and design in order to make a book about you.

Ceramics – Ms Vanessa Almanza Grades: 6-8 Limit: 24 students Fee: None This class will be a concentrated ceramics class in which students will create and complete several works taking an in depth look at firing and glazing techniques.

Field trips may include gallery visit/art museum, and (hopefully) a visit to a functioning wood fired kiln.
