Journal News Brings Back the Golf Show

The Journal News has taken over the administration and direction of the Westchester County Golf Show and with Kate Keller as the Show’s Director and the move to the Westchester Marriott in Tarrytown on March 12th and 13th there is no doubt that this will be a much different presentation and one where the emphasis will be on golf. The Met PGA has pledged their support with these changes and our professionals will be reading about the ways they can be involved in promoting the game, the Section and their facilities in the upcoming weeks.

Tournament Schedule Posted – But Be Aware – It is Tentative The 2016 schedule has been posted but PLEASE – realize that this is subject to change and revisions so while we offer it to help you with your facility planning, just make sure you keep checking for updates and realize that changes are inevitable and anticipated.

Partners and Sponsors Are Center Stage at PGA We had some good feedback from our Partners and Sponsors at the PGA Show and will be looking forward to using our March and April Newsletters to promote the many companies from the golf industry who continue to support the Met PGA and support our professionals. Thanks to all of our members who took the time to say thank you and extend their appreciation to our 2015 Partners and Sponsors at the PGA Show.

Deadline for Completion of PGA Compensation Survey is March 31st Now is the time to complete the 2016 PGA Golf Professional Compensation Survey. Your participation ensures that our Section's compensation information is valid and meaningful. Members can receive up to two MSR credits by completing the survey by the deadline. MSR credit is now automatically applied upon completion of the survey with a summary of their responses available for their records. In an effort to continuously improve the survey experience for our members, we have also streamlined many areas. Ideally, this will direct you to only answer questions that are relevant to your position. The survey can be accessed by clicking the following link. To help prepare Members, and for review prior to completing the survey online, there is now a downloadable version of the survey on the Compensation landing page. As a reminder, all survey responses are treated confidentially with results being reported only if there are five or more responses. To ensure confidentiality, results continue to be shared in an aggregated format and not by individual.

January Schedule of Winter Championships Features Senior Events The PGA Winter Championships have moved through January with the completion of the Quarter Century Championship, the Senior Stroke Play and the Senior-Junior Championship. Events are presented again this year by Premier Golf and GOLFADVISOR. In the Quarter Century Championship six Met PGA Members were able to cash a check in the first event of the Winter Championships and Sleepy Hollow’s David Young scored a 2-stroke victory over all players in Group 1 with rounds of 69-68 137. Huntington’s Jim Smoot fin-ished solo 4th in Group 1 with a 143 total and Peter Procops of the Lawrence Village GC tied for 5th to also earn a payday. In Group 2, Jack Druga of Shinnecock Hills finished T-10th to finish in the money. In Group 5, Mal Galletta Jr. shot 147 to tie for 5th place and in Group 6, it was Tom Joyce firing rounds of 77-72 for a 4th place finish, both cashing checks. Mike San Filippo shot 134 to win the overall title for the groups of 64 and under Quarter Century members (David Young was tied for 3rd) while Steve Schumaker won the overall title for the 65 and up groups. Bob Zimmerman captured the Half Century Championship Award. In the Senior Stroke Play, seven Met PGA members enjoyed prize money. Mark Mielke (T-5th) and Metropolis’ Craig Thomas (T-7th) were among the leaders in Group 1 (50-54). Group 2 saw Bruce Zabriski (T-9th) and Pelham’s Mike Diffley (14th) at the payout window. Bobby Heins of Old Oaks (T-8th) was among the winners in Group 3 while two great names of Met area golf, Mal Galletta Jr. (3rd place) and Mike Turnesa Jr. (4th place) were money earners in Group 5 (70-74 years old). Steve Schneiter of Utah won the overall prize for Groups 1 & 2 while Randy Erskine of Michigan was tops in Groups 3-9. The Senior-Junior Championship has often been dominated by the Met Section and while 2016 only produced one top-5 finish, there were 14 players who made the 54 hole cut to finish in the money in this rain-shortened event. Tops among our own were the tandem of Bruce Zabriski and Shaun Powers of Fairview CC with rounds of 68-61-66, five shots behind the winning duo of Lon Nielsen and Joshua Rackley. The pairing of Mark Mielke and North Shore CC assistant Anthony Aruta tied for 14th with the team of Frank Bensel of Century and former Met Section great Kevin Morris. The Deepdale duo of Darrell Kestner and Ben Polland tied for 28th along with Mike Laudien of Philip J. Rotella GC and his partner Kevin Healy and Scott Ford of Glen Oaks and Michael Ford. Peter Serafimoff of Millbrook G&TC paired with Jeff Sorenson to finish tied for 36th, a shot better than two Met Section teams at 12 under – Craig Thomas and his new assistant Brice Busse of Metropolis and Pat Eggeling of Old Oaks and his partner Bob Rittberger of Garden City Golf Club.

Met PGA Announces Staff Changes With the start of a new year there have been additional changes on the Met PGA staff. Our controller, Tony Murrell who had already come back to the Section after an earlier retirement, how now retired for the 2nd time. Tony has been handling our books for many years while also teaching accounting and auditing at Lehman College in the Bronx. We will certainly miss him and are so thankful for his years of dedicated service to the Section. Also, with the promotion of Jeff Voorheis from Tournament Director to Executive Director, we are pleased to announce that Dan Kiley will step up and take our the Tournament Director role. Dan has been doing a terrific job assisting Jeff and overseeing the Assistants Tour since joining the staff in mid-season of 2012. Finally, we are pleased to announce that Jonathan Gold has been appointed the new Employment Consultant for the Eastern Region (District 2). Jonathan will work with the Section as well as with New Jersey and Philadelphia as recent retirements have prompted a change in regional coverage. Michael Packard will now be responsible for the northeast region from CT through New England and part of Upstate New York. While we are happy for Jonathan, his transition will leave a void in Player Development where he was so valuable in supervising the PGA Junior League, helping to administer the Drive, Chip & Putt, coordinating Get Golf Ready and Play Golf America programs and being an asset in all of our Section Player Development initiatives.

Condolences We were sorry to hear that the father of former Section member, John Hines passed away on Jan. 20th at the age of 91. When John was on Long Island he would often make the trip down to the Carolinas to check on his Dad who had health issues even at that time. Our sympathies to John and his family on their loss.

US Kids Announces 2015 Awards US Kids Golf has announced their 2015 Top 50 Kids Teachers. They were chosen from applicants who completed an online survey and the winners are chosen based on their contributions to junior golf, such as: time devot-ed to teaching young golfers; innovation, creativity and fun in their programs; communication; parental involvement; and overall effort to grow the game. Selected for 2015 were Jessica Carafiello of Innis Arden Golf Club, Brian Fallon of Westchester Country Club and Ryan Peffer of The Tuxedo Club. Two of our professionals were also among 21 individuals who have earned the distinction of Master Kids Teacher by winning the Top 50 Kids Teacher Award three or more times. Being named a Master Kids Teacher is the highest honor an instructor can receive from U.S. Kids Golf. On the 2015 list are Michael Bulger of The Patterson Club and Joe DiDomenico of Pelham Country Club.

Michael Borsuk Attains Half-Century Status Former Hamlet Golf & CC Director of Golf Mike Borsuk recently achieved Half-Century membership status. Michael still spends time at Seawane and was always one of the very best business minds in the profession. Our congratulations to Mike on his incredible tenure and his service to the Section. We also noted that Angelo Ciampi, long-time professional at Lake Success and brother of Nunzio Ciampi who now resides in the South Florida Section also reached the 50-year

milestone in February. Also in January, Pete Donnelly, former Ridgeway A-1 and a Met PGA Professional of the Year gained Half-Century Club membership as did former Brentwood head professional Bill Luzi. Both are now in Florida (Pete in the South Florida Sec-tion and Bill in the North Florida PGA).

Two More Additions to the Met PGA Roster Our January Newsletter announced the election of three assistants (Frank Abatino, Peter Basso and Nick Novak) but unfortunately there were also two others elected on Jan. 4th and omitted from that listing. We welcome and congratulate Alexander Bardani, a class A-8 assistant to Rich Stucklen at Quogue Field Club and also offer our congratulations to new PGA Tour A-3 member, Ben Silverman who not only earned his Tour card (T-14th) in December

but was elected to membership on Jan. 4th and was married on Jan. 9th and now calls New City New York his home with his bride Dr. Morgan Handt Silverman. We wish Ben well on the PGA Tour.

DCP Registration is Open The PGA announced the opening of registration for the 2016 Drive, Chip & Putt. Qualifying to compete in the 2017 Finals at Augusta National right before The Masters. Now in its 4th year, this exciting competition is open to boys and girls ages 7 – 15 (as of April 2nd, 2017). Please note that the Met Section qualifyings will be held at several locations before advancing to the subregionals. Please note, however, that those who advance past the subregional will be assigned to the Regional Finals based on their qualifying site, not necessarily the closest or most convenient Regional location.

PGA Junior League PGA Junior League has taken off and in just three years, the Met Section has gone from 4 teams to 37 to 80 last year. We anticipate that our League might double in 2016 as more clubs and courses have enrolled and many facilities are now fielding multiple teams. Don’t miss out on this opportunity for your juniors – it has been a home run for professionals, for facilities, for parents and most im-portantly for the kids.

PGA REACH Announces KPMG Future Leaders Scholarship Program for High School Seniors The PGA has just announced an exciting opportunity for female High School Seniors through their partnership with KPMG on the Wom-en’s PGA Championship. The program highlights both organizations commitment to developing the next generation of female leaders through significant scholarship and mentoring support, led by Dr. Condoleeza Rice. Please note the deadline is Feb. 28 th so it is im-portant that this information is acted on quickly. Click here for the KPMG Future Leaders Application.

Two Join Quarter Century Ranks Congratulations to our two newest additions to the PGA of America’s elite Quarter Century Club. Andy Carracino of Timber Point GC and John Sanges of Rockaway Hunting Club reached the 25-year mark as of Jan. 31st. Both profession-als continue to serve the game, the Section and their facilities in outstanding fashion.

Best Wishes for a Speedy Recovery The Eagle will be flying again soon we hope. Life Member and Section tournament staffer, Dave Carazo was in Greenwich Hospital for back surgery on Jan. 20th. Dave is already home and starting the rehabilitation process and we wish him a complete and speedy recovery………..Former MGA President and the popular Fordham University Golf Coach, Paul Dillon had a recent scare that landed him in the hospital for a couple of weeks up in New Haven. He wound up having stents put in when they found his arteries were 95% blocked. He was feeling better almost immediately (in fact he wanted to attend a Fordham Golf Dinner the night he got home but common sense prevailed) and hopefully is already well on the way to a full recovery.

Propourri US Kids will be conducting a Certified Coach Seminar at Westchester CC on April 19th. For those in Florida during the winter, they also offer a program at PGA National Golf Resort & Spa on Feb. 10th. Call 888 387-5437 for more information. Congratulations to Michael Breed and Golf Channel as they are celebrating their 300th show on Feb. 1st at 7pm.

PerformanceTrak Participation Remains a Priority It is hard to understand why more of our head professionals are not participating in PGA PerformanceTrak. The information gathered on a monthly basis is critically important to our professionals and to their employers and our facilities. Data is such an important ele-ment to clubs and courses in their marketing and business operations and we want to encourage all of our head professionals to sign on to this reporting tool and at the very least submit figures of rounds of golf for the upcoming year. PerformanceTrak has now be-come a staple of reporting data for rounds of golf and recently the analysis of rounds per day when weather is factored in showed an increase in play. Please make sure you report your rounds and revenues.

PGA News and Notes At the start of the season we always recommend that PGA Members update their CareerLinks profile as well as making sure they have the appropriate current beneficiary listed in your membership data base………How capable are you with the Rules of Golf? PGA Profes-sionals are expected to have a certain level of expertise by their members and golfers. If you are not comfortable, it is not too late to attend one of the PGA/USGA Rules Schools or Workshops. Click here for the schedule for 2016………The PGA has announced that Tom Brawley has been promoted to Senior Director, Membership Services. They have also recently announced four new additions to the Employment Department with Roger Martinez selected as the new Senior Director of Employment and joining Jonathan Gold as our Eastern Region Employment Consultant are Doug Turner (Texas Region) and Cory Fletcher (Midwest Region)…… The Association’s new-est Public Service Announcements are under the ThxPGAPro moniker and can be viewed at ThxPGAPro.com.
