by Brenda Erdahl For 12 years Northstar Granite Tops in Maple Lake has hand- crafted natural stone into elegant, beautiful countertops for homes. Last spring, the company took its first steps into the digital age and the results are even better than ex- pected. With the purchase of sophisti- cated machinery, Northstar Gran- ite Tops has lost nothing of the loveliness and grace of its prod- ucts, but now they come with a new precision unattainable by man and work that is much less taxing on employees’ bodies. “The industry is moving into the digital age. In order to be com- petitive and offer the best cus- tomer experience, we need to follow suit,” owner Steve Bobick said. Bobick and his brother Rock have owned and operated North- star Granite Tops at 601 Sixth Street in Maple Lake since 2006, but have been in the business for 16 years. Up until last spring, they and their six employees did every- thing by hand. They created plas- tic templates based on the customer’s desires and existing cabinetry, laid those on the slab of rock selected by the client then cut out the design with a bridge saw. The final step was to hand polish the edges to a mirror shine. The work was time consuming and hard on a person’s body. Today when Rock visits a cus- tomer’s home, he uses a device that takes measurements by laser and creates a digital template right there in the field. Back at the shop, Mike Bjelland, Northstar Gran- ite’s programmer, takes a picture of the customer’s choice of stone then using the digital template, turns the slab of stone into a digi- tal countertop which he can send via e-mail to the client. Not everybody takes advan- tage of the digital countertop pro- gram, but those who do love it, Steve said. The digital template is then sent back to production. Dennis Weidner operates the company’s new CNC Saw which cuts out the design with perfect precision and speed. “It used to take Dennis two hours to cut a slab, now it takes twenty minutes,” Steve said. “It does reduce the turn-around time.” The equipment is also incredi- bly precise taking in barely per- ceptible indents or curves in the wall to produce a piece that fits as tight as possible against the wall. After the stone is cut, the counter top is sent to the shop’s new CNC Router which polishes the edges to a mirror shine. Finally, the new counter top is touched up and given a final pol- ish by hand before It’s ready for installation. Also new at the Northstar Granite Top facility is an updated water recycling plant. The com- pany has always recycled its water in an effort to be environ- mentally responsible, but this new system is even more efficient, Steve said. “In doing all the automation that we’ve done, we didn’t lose any of our staff,” he added. Their employees average close to nine years of experience and Rock and Steve take part in every counter top they create. “We are very hands on own- ers,” Steve said. “This keeps the service and the end-product high.” The company handles about 300 jobs a year all around the lakes region and into the metro, and most of their business comes from referrals which tells them they are doing something right. The journey to a new counter- top begins at the company’s 2,000 square foot showroom in Maple Lake’s industrial park. Keri Wurm is usually the first person clients meet when they arrange a tour of the showroom. Armed with 11 years of experience, Wurm is equipped to educate and give quotes, and she is always in-tune with the latest trends and styles. Once the stone is selected, Northstar Granite Tops will take care of the rest. “We do everything, from fab- rication to installation, to sealing your new countertops before we leave your home,” Steve said. Northstar Granite Tops has been accredited by the Marble In- stitute of America (MIA) since 2009, a distinction that demon- strates Northstar’s expertise in natural stone craftsmanship, and a true concern for worker and cus- tomer safety, as well as an adher- ence to business ethics and sound practices. In addition to recycling the water it uses, the company also re- cycles 100 percent of leftover counter top materials to be used in making road beds for the State of Minnesota. Northstar Granite Tops is open 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. weekdays, and Saturdays by appointment. For more information or to request a free quote, visit www.northstar- granitetops.com or call 320-963- 8677. Losing weight requires hardwork and determination. Often-times, men and women hoping tolose weight must commit to health-ier lifestyles than the ones they’vegrown accustomed to. That can bea big adjustment, and it’s importantthat men and women about to em-bark on their weight loss journeys

recognize that keeping lost weightoff can sometimes be as challeng-ing as losing the weight.

Some people are inspired tolose weight before their weddings, while others may want to shedsome pounds before beach season. While there’s no wrong reason forpeople who are overweight or

obese to lose weight, people whotie their weight loss efforts tosomething as temporary as beachseason may overlook the long-termbenefits of maintaining healthyweights, unknowingly increasingtheir risk of putting weight back onafter reaching their short-termgoals.

According to the Harvard T.H.Chan School of Public Health, maintaining a healthy weight low-ers a person’s risk of heart disease, stroke, diabetes, high blood pres-sure, and various cancers. Main-taining weight loss can be an uphillbattle, but men and women canemploy various strategies to ensurethe weight they lose stays lost foryears to come.

• Continue your weigh-ins.Weigh-ins may seem like theenemy as men and women maketheir initial efforts toward losingweight. However, weigh-ins grad-ually become something to lookforward to as pounds start to dropoff. Routinely weigh yourself evenafter reaching your weight lossgoals, as the scale can be just asmotivational for people trying tomaintain healthy weights as it is forpeople trying to lose weight.

• Stick to your diet. When try-ing to lose weight, adults oftencombine diet and exercise. That’sa great weight loss strategy, and it’salso a great way to maintain a

healthy weight. Recognize thatweight won’t stay off if you exer-cise but don’t eat right. Rather, maintaining a healthy weight overthe long haul requires both ahealthy diet and regular exercise.

• Eat slowly. While it might notwork for everyone, eating slowlyhas been linked to lower calorieconsumption. A study from re-searchers at Texas Christian Uni-versity found that participants whowere instructed to take small bites, chew thoroughly and pause andput their spoons down betweenbites consumed, on average, 88fewer calories per meal than par-ticipants who were told to takelarge bites, chew quickly and con-tinue eating without putting theirspoons down. Study participantswho were overweight, however, ate just 58 fewer calories on aver-age.

• Document your efforts.Whether it’s in a journal, on a blogor by emailing a loved one, docu-menting your efforts to maintain ahealthy weight may provide themotivation you need to stay oncourse.

Maintaining a healthy weightafter substantial weight loss is achallenge that men and women canovercome by staying as vigilant intheir efforts to keep weight off asthey were while working to loseweight.

One of the most widely con-sumed substances in the world, caffeine is found in varyingamounts in coffee, tea, chocolate, soda, and energy drinks.

According to the marketingexperts at Brandon Gaille, theUnited States leads the world incaffeine consumption, taking inaround 970 tons every year. Themajority of that caffeine is con-sumed in the form of coffee. Al-though too much caffeine hasbeen linked to increased anxiety, insomnia and restlessness, thosecups of Joe actually may havepositive health benefits when en-joyed in moderation. The Na-tional Institutes of Health advisesthat, since coffee beans areloaded with protective com-pounds, they can help delivercaffeine in healthy ways.

When consumed in coffee, caffeine may help prevent certaindiseases. Caffeine, which is amild stimulant by nature, hasbeen linked to lower risks ofAlzheimer’s disease. The NIHalso says caffeine may lower a

person’s risk of developingParkinson’s disease and other de-mentias, while also boostingconcentration and memory. Thebiologically active compounds incoffee also can help prevent dis-eases like stroke and certain can-cers.

The research study, “Adeno-sine, Adenosine Receptors andthe Actions of Caffeine,” firstpublished in February 1995,states that caffeine blocks an in-hibitory neurotransmitter calledadenosine. When this occurs, theamount of other neurotransmit-ters, such as norepinephrine anddopamine, can increase. This canimprove the firing of neurons, leading to improvements inmood, memory, energy, and gen-eral cognitive function.

For individuals looking toshed a little extra weight, caf-feine may help there, too. Sev-eral studies show that caffeinecan boost metabolic rate by threeto 11 percent, according toHealthline. Coffee, which boaststhe vitamins B2, B5, B3, man-

ganese, and potassium, deliverscaffeine and can be part of a nu-tritious diet and successfulweight-management regimen.

People prone to headachesand recurrent pain may find caf-feine can help them managethose symptoms. Caffeine is oneof the main ingredients in somepain relievers. The University ofGeorgia also has found that amoderate dose of caffeine(roughly that found in two cupsof coffee) can reduce post-work-out pain by up to 48 percent. What’s more, The Journal of theAmerican Medical Associationnotes that, when caffeine is com-bined with other pain relievers, only 40 percent of the other drugwas needed to provide the samelevel of efficacy.

Coffee and caffeine providevarious health benefits and canbe beneficial when consumed inmoderation. Anyone who wantsto alter their caffeine consump-tion should do so gradually to seehow their body reacts to thechanges.

A new year marks a greattime to embrace change. Manypeople do just that by makingresolutions designed to im-prove their lives in the yearand years ahead.

Resolutions regarding per-sonal health are annuallyamong the most popularchanges people hope to makeat the dawn of a new year. Infact, a quick scan of annuallists citing the most popularresolutions found that pledgesto eat healthier and exercisemore can be found at or nearthe top of such lists.

Though such lists might nothave been compiled using themost scientific of methods, it’sno secret that getting healthierand looking better is a goalmany people strive for uponthe arrival of January 1. Unfor-tunately, a 2015 report fromU.S. News & World Reportsuggested that 80 percent ofresolutions fail, oftentimes asearly as February. For thosewho don’t just want but need to

get healthier, failure to live upto a resolution to exercise morecan have potentially devastat-ing consequences.

If exercising more is a goalin the year ahead, the follow-ing are a few strategies tomake that happen.

• Exercise in the earlymorning. As the day pro-gresses, unforeseen challengesor forgotten commitments havea way of devouring time ini-tially earmarked for exercise.Exercise first thing in themorning before any commit-ments to work and family hi-jack the time you havecommitted to exercising.

• Take on less responsibility.Professionals and parents oftencite commitments to work andfamily as the primary reasonsthey aren’t getting enough ex-ercise. While those are per-fectly reasonable excuses toskip a workout, men andwomen who recognize thelong-term benefits of routineexercise may be compelled to

take on less responsibility atwork while also making an ef-fort to divvy up responsibilitiesat home more equitably.

According to the U.S. Cen-ters for Disease Control andPrevention, ongoing exercisecan reduce risk for cardiovas-cular disease, type 2 diabetes, metabolic syndrome, and somecancers. The CDC also notesthat routine exercise strength-ens bones and muscles whileimproving mood. Taking onmore responsibility at workmight be great for your career, but that may prove a Pyrrhicvictory if your long-termhealth is jeopardized. Parentscan discuss with their spousehow to better share responsi-bilities at home so both momsand dads can get regular exer-cise.

• Embrace more efficientexercise routines. Rather thanworking a single muscle groupat a time, which can be bothtime-consuming and boring, men and women can adapt

their workout routines to focuson multi-muscle exercises.Work with a personal trainer tomake your workout as efficientas possible.

• Schedule your routineeach week. Each week is dif-ferent, so while it may be idealto establish a workout routinein which you exercise at thesame time each day, that’s notalways going to be possible.Failing to exercise on a dayyou had intended to workoutcan compromise your motiva-tion to workout in the future,so sit down at the beginning ofeach week to examine yourcommitments for the daysahead and schedule times toexercise in the next seven days. This can keep you on track andhelp you avoid the disappoint-ment of missing a workout be-cause life got in the way.

Finding time to exercise isnot always so easy, but eventhe busiest men and womencan likely still include work-outs in their daily routines.
