It was a time when the College community acknowledged the achievements of the members of Year 12, thanked them for the huge contribution to the College, and wished them the best as they prepare for the HSC and enter the next stage of their lives. The College is proud of our Class of 2013 and we feel privileged to be able to have played a role in the development of these young men and women. For fifteen students, their association with the College and St Peter’s Anglican Primary School goes back to 2000 when they started Prep, for eight others it goes back to Kindergarten in 2001. Others joined our Broughton family in their primary years or as nervous and anxious students in Year 7 in 2008, whilst others joined us in their secondary years. During their time at Broughton, they contributed a lot to the College community at the academic and co-curricular areas. They have sought to do their best in their studies and have made a significant contribution to our musicals, dramas, band and choral groups and were successful at all areas of sport. The College has also benefited from the Christian service and leadership of students in this cohort. Many have been eager to take the opportunity to share their faith with their peers and other members of the student body and have been actively involved in RAGE, Bible studies and Student Led Term Services. FAREWELLING THE GRADUATING CLASS OF 2013

As adults, the members of Year 12 will often need to make many important decisions that could impact their life and the lives of others. I encourage them to seek advice and guidance when they make decisions relating to their future. There are many people who are available to help them – their parents, their teachers and other contacts they have. I remind them that God is also there always to guide and that through Him, they will make the correct decisions. When they commit things to God, the path forward will be clear and through His guidance He will enable them to achieve and experience things they would never have dreamt of.

YEAR 12 FORMAL

Last night, staff and parents joined the students of Year 12 as they celebrated their graduation at their Formal Dinner held at The Cube, Campbelltown. I commend Year 12 for the manner in which they presented themselves as they showed what wonderful men and women they have become. There were many proud mums, dads and staff members as we joined Year 12 at this special night of celebration.

Year 12 have asked me to thank Mrs Kennedy, Mrs Clipsham, Mrs Noakes and Mr Margin for all that they have done to make this week so special.

FAREWELL AND THANK YOU MRS ANTAL

Today is the last day for my Personal Assistant, Mrs Sheila Antal, who leaves us to commence her retirement. I would like to thank Mrs Antal for everything she has done for Broughton during her time with us. She has been with the College from the very first day of lessons on 3 February 1986 and has seen Broughton grow into the wonderful place it is today. She has done an outstanding job assisting and coordinating Broughton’s three Headmasters – Mr Webb, Mr Rooney and myself – and each of us have valued her commitment to the College and the support, encouragement and prayers she has given us. She has worked

with over 200 staff and seen nearly four thousand students come through the College.

Mrs Antal, we all wish you the best as you commence your retirement and thank you for everything you have done for Broughton. We know that you are looking forward to spending more time with your husband, Chris, and with your family and friends. We know that God will keep watching over you and blessing you.

Mrs Antal with current Headmaster Mr O’Connor and former Headmaster Mr Webb.

IT IS GREAT TO SEE YOU KARAN

The students in Year 7 were excited today to be able to spend a bit of time with Karan Gaikwad who came in to visit them this morning. Karan is presently home from hospital and was eager to see his friends before the end of the term to thank them for their friendship, support and prayers.

JUNIOR SCHOOL END OF TERM AWARDS ASSEMBLY

Congratulations to the students who received awards at the Junior School End of Term Awards Assembly held on Thursday. Students of the Junior School – you can be proud of your achievements this term. Your teachers have told me how hard you have worked and have shown me some of the wonderful work you have completed.

WORKING BEE – THANK YOU

Thank you to the parents and students who were able to join us for the Working Bee on Saturday. The day was a huge success with many jobs being done. Tasks completed included gardening and painting of the shapes in the Junior School COLA, seating, staff toilets and areas in the Kindergarten area.

Students in the Junior School are excited to see the Car Track under construction and are eager to be able to play on this area early in Term 4. I thank Mr Andrew Marek for his work in planning and coordinating this project.

I would like to thank Mr Peter Mustone, for organising heavy equipment to undertake mowing and the removal of many old netball and other posts. I also thank the members of the P & F for providing morning tea and lunch for the workers and Mrs Staples for opening the OSHC to provide childcare for their children.

Days such as these are days of fellowship and relationship-building whilst also providing a great service to the College.

A collage of photos can be found at the back of the Newsletter.

BYOD – HOW DOES IT WORK?

The College will begin moving towards a Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) platform next term, initially with Year 11. The date for the first step of this move will be confirmed in the first newsletter next Term.

Under a BYOD platform, students will be able to bring in their own electronic device (laptop, iPad, Tablet etc.) and then link into the College network to be able to access the Citrix platform. From here the students will be able to undertake work in their classes using their device.

CHRISTIANITY EXPLORED

Christianity Explored will begin again in term 4.

This is a 7 week course which is based around a DVD presentation and discussion over the Bible.

This is a great course for anyone who has questions about Christianity or is interested in finding out more.

We will look at questions such as, "Who is Jesus? What's life all about? Why did Jesus die? Did Jesus really rise from the dead? What does any of this have to do with me?"

No one will be asked to read the Bible or pray out loud, and there are plenty of opportunities for questions!

As the countdown to Christmas begins, why not come and find out more about the Christ of Christmas?

A quote from someone who participated in the course in Term 3...

"I started the course believing that Jesus couldn't have risen from the dead because he was just a man...gradually I realised Jesus is more than just a man and that meant he could rise from the dead."

JUNIOR SCHOOL MRS A BLOCKLEY- ASSISTANT HEAD OF THE JUNIOR SCHOOL

OUR TERM 3 OVERVIEW

It is hard to believe that we have already reached the end of Term 3. This has been an extremely busy term in the Junior School in all areas of school life. Students in the choir, band and percussion group busily practised and then performed at the Town Hall in the IPSHA Combined Schools Concert as well as at our End of Term Chapel and Assembly.

Camps and excursions also played a large part this term with Mrs Bradley taking a group of students to the Gifted and Talented Camp and Year 3 having their annual camp at Wedderburn. Of course the most exciting camp of all was the Infants Day Camp (photos

below) held last Friday.

Stage 3 students travelled to Canberra as part of their studies of Government and Kindergarten are off to the Botanic Gardens to learn about nature. This was also a topic that was covered when Miss Van Breda took a group of SLATE students to the Macarthur Sustainable Schools Expo.

Students competed in many sporting events this term with the Athletics Carnival being the major event followed by NASSA and CIS for those students who qualified. The IPSSO winter finals were also held this term along with the commencement of our school tennis competition.

The whole Junior School also had Photo Day, and a visit from the author DC Green which was highly entertaining. A number of students also competed in the ICAS tests with some very commendable results achieved.

I would like to thank the P & F for all they have done for the College this term. They have cooked barbeques and breakfasts, manned Father’s Day stalls and been willing to help in any way that they could in contributing to College Life.

The students have been enjoying our new car track (winners of the competition shown right), which was implemented at our last Working Bee. Thank you to those parents who have helped along with our Property team that keep our Junior School looking fresh and tidy.

As we are drawing towards the holidays I pray that you will all enjoy the break that is coming up and stay safe. We look forward to seeing you all again next Term for more busy times.

SPORTS SHOES

A reminder that the Uniform Policy states that sport shoes must be predominantly white. There appear to be many coloured shoes being worn by students on sport days which are not part of school uniform regulations.

FOOD SHARING

Students are encouraged not to share food or spend their money buying food for other children. This is a very serious matter particularly for those children who have allergies. Parents are encouraged to have this discussion with their children. A suggestion would be to only send your child to school with what they need for themselves for that day.

WRITEON COMPETITION

This is an annual writing competition run by the Board of Studies for NSW students in Years 1 to 6. The competition is designed to encourage students to develop their writing skills. A photograph is supplied for inspiration and then students write a short piece of up to 500 words. This writing can be a description, exposition, narrative or recount.

All students were encouraged to do a piece of writing, however, the school could only submit the best entry from each stage. The following students have had their entries submitted; Angelina Arora (Stage 3), Monique Youssef (Stage 2) and Isabella Urquhart (Stage 1). These students will have their work published in the newsletter over the coming weeks. Other finalists will have the opportunity to read their pieces at Assembly.

Hope by Angelina Arora

I sit on the sun dried, parched rocks looking at the endless horizon from a distance. There is no hope and despair surrounds me in search of m master, Mr Bonegiver. There is no cloud in sight and the cool waters of the beach I have left miles behind. Why did I run away from me ever affectionate and ever caring master who treated me like his own son who he lost years ago? My greed, my hunger for freedom has over taken my loyalty for my master. . The only thing I carry with me is a long red scarf give to me by Mrs Bonegiver, The scarf flies wildly in the wind. My only identify that proves I’m not a stray.

I look in the distance with ever enquiring eyes and hope the wind will carry the message of my whereabouts to them. I don’t even know where I am, I don’t even know where to go. The cool wind under the harsh, summer sun provides a heavenly relief to my blisters on my sore feet. With courage I sit on these barren rocks and with hope in my heart I seek my master. The sense of smell has gone in this unforgiving heat and I don’t know for how long I can sustain this. The early morning bath has kept my long hair cooled but the soaring temperatures will soon force my body to succumb to its heat.

I can’t even bark as my throat is as dry as a bone and tears won’t come, my eyes dried up of any moisture. I proudly wear my identity as I sit in hope. My mind says that I will die but my heart says there is hope. They will, they should come looking for me. I am their only loved one. Well, that’s what I thought.

As I dwell into the past I clearly remember the day when Mr Bonegiver picked me up from the side of a street. I was filthy, U was wild and I was hungry. He gave me a name, he gave me a home and above all he gave me a hearty meal of bones and soup every day. I was the privileged one. But once again I find myself lost in this wild, lonely and careless world. Yes, I am responsible for this, the fragrance of Mrs Bonekeeper’s perfume lingers on the beautiful piece of red chiffon the keeps my hoes high in finding them again. M Loved ones, My Masters, My Caretakers, My whole world, they are nowhere to be seen. I now fear for my life. I don’t want to be filthy, wild hungry and back on the streets.

Please come to me as soon as you can, please find me. I wish this wind would carry this red piece, my identity, to them and bring them back to me once and for all.

DAY CAMP

Last Friday K-2 had their Annual Day Camp. This is a great opportunity for children to have a taste of what is to come when they enter their primary years. The day started with a walk around the property for children to spend time in the wonderful outdoors that God has created. This was followed by class Devotions outside of the usual classroom environment.

This year we invited Walkabout Reptiles to come and entertain as well as educate the children about reptiles. Judging by their reactions and their answers to my questions, on what was the best part of the day, this was a big hit with all of them.

The rest of the day was spent playing games and eating, with the day ending with a movie in the Function Centre. Judging by how tired the children were going home, the day was obviously enjoyed by all.

A big thank you is extended to all the parents who came to help with morning tea and lunch.

SPANISH

LET’S CELBRATE 200 YEARS OF FLAMENCO! OLÉl

On Friday 11 October (first week back in Term 4) we will be having our annual SPANISH DAY. This year we celebrate 200 years of Flamenco and we would like to expose this wonderful and unique culture to our students. They will have a Flamenco master class and will be introduced to basic Flamenco techniques of footwork, hand & arm movements, palmas (handclapping) and jaleos (shouts of encouragement in Spanish), all incorporated into a short dance which students will perform onstage in the Finale. Students will also watch the Flamenco performance. “Flamenco is Not a Bird” show, which teaches students how the Flamenco music and dance style evolved from the Gypsies of AndalucÍa (Spain), back to Jewish and Indian culture. Students will be impressed by the dancers’ fast and furious footwork, as they help keep the unique Flamenco with palmas (hand clapping). Accompanied by live music, it will have everyone on their feet shouting Olé!

Students will also be involved in a Zumbatomic class (designed especially for children) to experience a different style of music from South America.

We encourage students to wear, on that day, flamenco costumes or something with a Spanish theme e.g. Spanish colours (yellow& red), bullfighter or bull runner (white shirt, red scarf), Zorro or Spanish soccer player etc. Girls are asked to wear a red flower (clip) in their hair.

This will be an enjoyable event for our students with lots of music and dancing. Thank you for your cooperation and involvement in preparation of the costumes. Gracias!

Mrs A Blockley Assistant Head of the Junior School

SENIOR SCHOOL MRS C KENNEDY HEAD OF THE SENIOR SCHOOL

THANK YOU FOR THE TERM

What a busy but absolutely wonderful Term 3 the Senior School has had. Well done to all the students and staff, who have worked so hard in class and with the many events in the past months. I pray that all of our students and families will have an enjoyable and restful break in the next two weeks.

As I write this article, I have just come from watching the Senior School Celebration assembly. The aim of this assembly is to showcase work that has taken place in class as well as events which are part of our extracurricular activities program. I feel very privileged to work in a school such as Broughton. The talent is exceptional and I feel proud of the whole of the

student body here at Broughton. Thank you to all who participated in the assembly in some way.

GOODBYE YEAR 12

This week saw many events to farewell Year 12 2013. I would like to thank students, parents and members of staff who contributed in some way to farewelling Year 12. Year 12, were an absolute credit to themselves, their families and Broughton. They conducted themselves with distinction and I was extremely proud of them, knowing that they have finished off in such a respectful and honourable way. During the last week, they joined together for special and moving events to say goodbye. The Graduation Assembly and Formal Dinner were the highlights and a fitting way for the College to thank and pray for them for God’s blessings as they leave us and face a new and exciting future. The football game, picnic and breakfast highlighted the closeness of the grade and the strong bonds which many of them have formed over the past years at Broughton. Thank you Year 12. I feel very proud for all that you have achieved and the men and women you have become. I will really miss you.

God bless

STAFF VS STUDENTS SOCCER MATCH (SEE PHOTOS BELOW)

This is the thirteenth year that the students have taken on the mighty staff. The staff, have been victorious on 3 of those occasions. After a rather wet start to the day, it looked like for the first time, the game would have to revert to Futsal in the sports centre. But God blessed us with beautiful weather with the sun and wind quickly drying out the ground, and so the football game was back on. Both teams were at full strength with the staff team welcoming back the old faithfuls of Mr Allard, Mr Stein, Mr Strong, Mr Gillies, Mr Ramirez, Mr O’Donnell, Mr Gillion and some new young blood of the boys who work in After School Care and Tuesday sport. The students team was well managed by Blair Ellis, who even looked the part in his very smart suit. It was great to see the student team play competitively but fairly and they looked very much like winning after scoring the first goal and being in the lead at 2-1. Unfortunately for the students, the strength and skill of the staff prevailed and were eventual winners 4 goals to 2. Mr Allard keenly accepted the trophy on behalf of the staff at the Graduation assembly.

DRAMA NIGHT AND ART EXHIBITION

The start of next term is already shaping up to be very exciting. Our Drama and Visual Arts students in the Years 9 - 11 elective classes will showcase some of their work from this year at Broughton's Drama Night and Art Exhibition. The event will be held in the first week back after the holidays on Wednesday 9 October at 7pm in the College hall. Mark the date in your diaries and please come and support our students and enjoy their amazing talent.

YEAR 10 DRAMA PERFORMS FOR THE JUNIOR SCHOOL

Throughout Term 3 Year 10 Drama have been working on creating original performances for Junior School audiences. This week classes in the Junior School visited the Senior School Drama room to watch these performances. One group performed a piece called "Grandma's Dementia" for Year 5, the second group performed "I don't want to grow up!" for Year 2 and Kindergarten were able to watch a performance called "The Ugly Duckling". It was exciting for Year 10 students to finally be able to perform for their intended audience and it was certainly an exciting visit to the Senior School for Kindergarten, Year 2 and Year 5.

YEAR 9 PASS EXCURSION HOMEBUSH OLYMPIC PARK

On 11 September 2013, our Year 9 PASS class went on an excursion to Sydney Olympic Park. We went to ANZ Stadium, Cathy Freeman Park, and the Hall of Champions.

We were all very excited as we set off for ANZ Stadium, to be taken on an impressive tour. We watched a short video on the history of the stadium, and were reminded of some of the most impressive sporting moments to ever be achieved inside it.

The tour consisted of going inside the media rooms, where some of the most exciting commentary is recorded and we went in the warm up rooms, and the change rooms where our favourite athletes prepare for their matches. We ran through the tunnel, though were unable to step foot on the precious grass, it was still amazing to see the stadium from such a different perspective.

We then went on the Gantry tour, we all filed into an elevator as we ascended to the very top of the Stadium. We climbed up into the roof, looking down on the historic field from an intimidating height. We ate our lunch in Cathy Freeman Park, and reflected on the once in a lifetime tour we had just been on, as we fueled our bodies, in preparation for the rest of our action packed day.

In the shadow of ANZ Stadium lays Cathy Freeman Park, a relaxing and inspiring place of Olympic glory. We observed the sculptures such as Eight Women and The Stride. It was a relaxing environment for us to capture ourselves in the Olympic dream of Cathy Freeman as we ate our lunch and appreciated the park. Mr Burns gave us the task of investigating what each sculpture represented on the Olympic stage. This helped us appreciate the efforts and sacrifices of the people who competed and assisted with the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games.

I found this experience to be inspirational as we saw the efforts by the Olympic officials appreciated by the Australian community. We saw the glory of an underdog athlete’s success and were able to experience the strides themselves with the ‘The Stride’ sculpture. This was the highlight of my experience at Cathy Freeman Park and I plan to visit there again.

This was an amazing experience and we all had a lot of fun, and learnt about Australian sport at the same time.

MISA TERM 3 RESULTS

Last week we had the finals round of the Term 3 MISA competition. All out teams competed well in their matches with four out of seven teams winning. Unfortunately none of these teams were competing in the 1 vs 2 playoff match but we finished with a number of third and fifth place wins. Boys Basketball and Boys AFL were our best two sides, with both teams finishing 3rd. Considering, there are eight schools in the MISA competition and we are relatively small compared to the other schools, we have performed very well this term.

Next term we will be running the following MISA sports, with trials to be held in the last week of term.

Yr 7 Boys Cricket Yr 8/9 Boys Cricket Open Mixed Tennis Yr 10/11 Boys Volleyball Yr 7 Girls Basketball

Yr 7-9 Boys OzTag Yr 7-9 Girls OzTag Yr 9-11 Boys AFL Yr 10/11 Girls Volleyball Yr 7 Boys Basketball

We wish all our teams good luck as the compete next term

DUKE OF EDINBURGH - QUALIFYING SILVER/BRONZE HIKE SEPT 2013

Twelve Silver and two Bronze hikers began their journey through the Royal National Park on Saturday 14 September. The starting point was Audley Weir and after overnight rain the bush was fresh and sparkling with the morning sun. The spring flowers have been blooming for a while and the colours were amazing. The group seemed to make very easy work of some of the steep uphill sections, and were soon enjoying a morning tea break overlooking Winifred Falls. Some quite bushy sections had us on the lookout for snakes as the day warmed up and although one was sighted it was off quickly.

Reaching the first nights camp (Bonnie Vale near Bundeena) early meant plenty of time to set up tents, play volleyball with a much appreciated beach ball (thanks Lauren) and cook and devour dinner before dark. We had the pleasure of Mr and Mrs Haslers’ company for the night and apart from some noisy neighbours at one point the evening was very peaceful. Sleep was welcome and the overnight rain only served to enhance the cosiness of our tents.

Sunday dawned bright and sunny and although tents were wet we managed to get them packed up swiftly to begin our longest day (about 20km). The scenery throughout the day was stunning – cliff top views, creek crossings and beach sections meant that there were few ‘boring’ sections and kept interest and motivation up. The group continued to work cohesively ensuring there was rest and encouragement anytime a hiker was going through a flat patch. Lunch at Wattamola and then a water refill at Garie Beach were the main stops for the day and we were able to arrive at North Era campsite well before dark to once again set up camp and begin to prepare dinner. Group size was now twelve as the Bronze hikers had been picked up at Garie Beach to complete their two day camp requirements. Well done to Edward Price and Tim Longley, both of Year 9, for completing two quite strenuous days.

We were able to leave camp by 8am Monday morning for the shorter but demanding third day of hiking to Otford railway station. We experienced some showers during this section but all the hikers remained in high spirits as the

finish drew closer. Some serious elevation gain led to the top of the escarpment and flat or downhill last 3kms to the station. Strong walking the whole day ensured we not only made the train but had to end up waiting 90 minutes for it!

This hike covers some beautiful sections of the eastern coastline and can be accessed at various points without walking for three days. I would encourage people to make the effort with their families.

Well done to Grace Cartledge, Georgi Georgieff, Kye Hooper, Oliver King, Fiona Lanz, Kara Osgood, Lauren Payne, Justin Russell, Kyle Watson, Luke McCann, Rebecca Meads and Harrison Bassett for completing this expedition section of the Silver Award.

Thank you to Mrs Stein who delivered water and also made the trek in from Garie Beach to stay Sunday night and back out in the morning.
