DrLimoremovinganarrowheadfromalargebullelephantinMusiaraSwamp

Wehaveexperiencedheavythunderstorms2or3timesaweekstartinginSeptemberovertheentireecosystem.Theareaislookinggreenandregeneratingquicklyafterthelastdryperiod.GeneralThisreportingperiodwehaverecorded3elephantdeaths,whichisadecreasefrom5lastperiod.Thecausesofdeathareconflict,naturalandunknown.MEP,KWS,andpartnersharmonizedelephantmortalityrecordsonthe11thand12thofSeptember.Thetotalatthetimewas31elephantcarcasses.Weareexperiencingincreasedconflictoutsidetheconservanciesandseveralofourcollaredelephantsmovedintoconflictareasduringthisperiod.Wehopetherecentrainswilldrawelephantsbackintotheconservanciesandnationalpark.Theslowingofthemigrationnorthwardmayalsohavepositiveeffectinthesameregard.

MEPandKWShaveformedanewmobileHECteambasedinOlosukutConservancyoppositetheMNCAirstrip.ThisteamcoverstheriverbordertotheKabosoncommunitycenter.NowthatbothlandcruisersarebasedinfieldstationstheHQRRTisdeployedusingtheSuzukiandhelicopter.MEPTrustboardmetonthe2ndofSeptemberandconductedthefirstpartofthegoodgovernancereviewtheorganizationisundergoing.KellyBottonewasveryinformativeandwehopetocompletetheexerciseatthenextboardmeeting.MEP’sfounderandfamilyvisitedusinAugust.MEPhostedthePREPARED/USAIDlandofapplicationWILDattheMEPHQonthe16thofSeptember.Thescientificcommitteemetvirtuallyonthe20thofSeptember.

ThedeadelephantfoundintheMaraRiverbesideMaraNorthConservancyonthe5thofSeptember.PartnershipDevelopmentWWFhaveaskedustomeettofinalizethepost-monitoringcontractinOctober.Weplantodeploy12NarokCountyGovernmentrangersinOctober.WehavebeendevelopingarelationshipwiththeNgoswaiPrimarySchooltosupportafencingproject,treeplantingproject,andtoiletfacility.WealsoplantodevelopapartnershipwiththeMaaTrustinregardtoeducationdevelopmentprojects.WesentamobilerecceteamtoLoitaandpatrolledfor2daysinAugustwiththerangersfromMaraLoitaCommunityRangers.Theteamdidnotfindanycarcassesandwereabletotrackaherdofaround20elephants.Weplantodevelopourpartnership,anddeploytogether,inthisarea.Therangersalsoneedtraining,formalizedemployment,anduniforms.Fundraising:

VictoriaFanthorpejoinsMEPonthe1stofOctoberinthepositionofDevelopmentDirectoratMEP.Victoriawillbeworkingtoincreasefundingfortheorganizationthoughimplementingthefundraisingstrategy.TheonlinehelicopterfundraisinghascontinuedtoslowdownwithnonewdonationsinAugustorSeptember.Onthe11thofAugusttheCEOmetwithSueRodgerswhomightbeinterestinginfundingthehelicopter.WehavesubmittedaproposaltoTheDavidSheldrickWildlifeTrustforanewvehicleforHECandrapidresponse.ThistourismseasonwehavemetwithseveralgroupsfromRichard’sCampwhohavedonated100USDperguest.MEPreceivedaboxofequipment,whichincluded4pairsofsockseachforallMEPrangers,medicalkits,camelbacksandcoldweathergearfrompartnerRunningForRangersinAugust.Security: Inthisperiodwearrested2membersofanivorypoachinggangwhowehavebeenfollowingforsometime.TheykilledanelephantinNgoswaniareaonthe4thofMarchandwealsosuspectthattheykilledthe4elephantsinSianainJanuary2016.Afterthefirstarrestonthe17thwegatheredenoughinformationfromthesuspecttofindanotherofhisganginLoitawith10kgsofbushmeat.Thefirearmrecoveryandarrestof2suspectsonthe27thofSeptemberisthesecondarmedgangwehavestoppedthisyear.

HelicopterUpdate:Wehaverespondedto50%ofconflictcasesinthisreportingperiodwiththehelicopter.Itremainsthesinglemosteffectivetooltomoveelephantsoutofdangerousareas.Wehavealsobeenusingfirecrackersfromthehelicopteraddingtotheeffectivenesswithstubbornelephants.ThehelicopterhasalsobeenvitalinmobilizingtheKWSandDSWTvetteamtotreatwoundedelephantsandotherwildlife.Onthe28thofAugustwemobilizedthehelicoptersotheKWSDSWTvetteamcoulddartandtreatanelephantwoundedbyarrows.Onthe16thofSeptemberwewereabletomobilizethevetteamtotreatanelephantwoundedbyaspearandagiraffewoundedbyasnareintheOlosukutConservancy.Staff:WilsonSairouawillbeonPaternityLeaveinOctoberwhoisnowtheproudfatherofSandraSanaiyanSairoua,bornonthe28thofSeptember.OnbehalfofalltheMEPstaffwewelcomeVictoriatotheteam.RangerSammyKariawasdismissedafterbeingissuedwith3warninglettersincluding,beingdrunkonduty,continuedlackofmotivationtowork,andbeingAbsentWithoutLeaveonnumerousoccasions.ElephantTracking:ThisisthefirstmonthMEPincludestheadditional8collaredelephantsintheMaraEcosystemtomakeatotalof19elephantscurrentlybeingtrackedonadailybasis.Inthisreportingperiodwehavenotbeenabletovisitallthecollaredelephants.WehopetodevelopthisaspectwithfundingfromWWF.Hugo HugospentthedurationofthereportingperiodinsidetheMNCandOloisukut
