Brno (pronounced BUR-noh), the second largest city in the Czech
Republic — the heart of Europe — has a huge student population
of 65,000 students, which includes a high percentage of international
students. According to the Brno City State Report 2018, 98 % of Erasmus
students were satisfied with and enjoyed their stay in Brno.
Students ExperienceStudents like the city’s clubs, pubs, and good
beer as well as excellent public transport,
parks, and the historic centre The high-
quality education, rich cultural life, hun-
dreds of sports events, and the beautiful
surroundings are all excellent reasons
for studying here
Something that all students will appreciate
is the affordable prices in Brno The average
price of a meal in a restaurant is around
150 CZK (or about €6; $7), a monthly student
city transport pass is 275 CZK (or about
€11; $12), and student housing in the halls
of residence ranges from 3,000 to 9,000
CZK per month (or about €117 to €352;
$133 to $398)
Students can also take advantage of

International Networks
We are committed to developing and supporting
our researchers, and our endeavours were
recognised in 2018 by the European Commission’s
HR Excellence in Research Award
We are working on a number of international H2020 and similar
projects such as “GREENER”, and from 2020 will coordinate
an international project in cultural tourism that will bring together
eleven other European universities and four research institutes
We participate in the activities of international organisations
and institutions such as the NATO Science for Peace and Security (SPS)
programme and the International Fertiliser Society
We work together with other researchers within the European Cooperation in Science
and Technology (COST) network on various projects including agricultural research projects
Our Faculty of AgriSciences is a member of 25 international journals including the International
Journal of Molecular Science
Mendel University in Brno is a member of several international networks, which provide
a supportive environment for sharing experiences and working together
This is why our university employs experts and provides unique
facilities dedicated to research and teaching, which give our
students the opportunity to develop their skills and knowledge.
Our facilities include the Botanical Garden and Arboretum, Training
Agricultural Enterprise Žabčice and the Training Forest Enterprise
— Masaryk Forest in Křtiny.
We believe a high-qualityeducation system should teachpractical skills that can beapplied to real-lifeproblem-solving…
The Botanical Garden and Arboretum, which stretch over eleven hectares, are close to the university campus
and, in addition to providing a solid research and teaching base, are also an excellent place to relax and study.
The Training Agricultural Enterprise Žabčice can be found 25 km south of Brno
and teaches students practical skills in arable farming and animal husbandry.
The enterprise includes a winery and sells its own produce.
The Training Forest Enterprise — Masaryk Forest in Křtiny boasts over 10,000 hectares
(the equivalent of 9,500 soccer pitches) and is proud to manage the forests
so that they fulfil their aesthetic role in the landscape and serve an important
role in teaching and education.

Faculty of AgriSciences
The Faculty of AgriSciences is a leading agricultural teaching and
research institution in the Czech Republic. Our modern laboratories
enable our academic staff to study crop production and animal breeding,
food production and quality, agroecology, renewable energy resources,
agriculture mechanisation etc. The faculty was established in 1919
as one of the founding faculties of the new agricultural university.
Research and developmentThe impact of climate change on agri-
cultural production is at the heart of our
research In addition to research projects
and papers, we are involved in the pro-
fessional community and manage several
web portals that provide information on
current developments in agriculture, for-
estry, water regimes, extreme weather,
landscapes (www klimatickazmena cz/en),
drought and its impact on agriculture
(www intersucho cz/en), selected crop
yield forecasts (www vynosy-plodin cz —
only in Czech), and the impact of selected
abiotic and biotic factors on plant growth
and development (www agrorisk cz — will
be published in autumn 2019)
We participated in the “Renewal of crop
production in semiarid regions of north
Gobi”, a project by the Czech Ministry of
Agriculture, which studied the Dornogobi
area in Eastern Mongolia to identify sourc-
es of water and suitable farming land This
project resulted in a fully-functional farm
with facilities for processing
and preserving plant products
Our faculty also contributes to improving
the competitiveness of Czech food pro-
duction and the related industries as a part
of a Czech government project (TAČR)
We breed and test coloured wheat that
generates natural colours in the caryopsis,
primarily antokyans and carotenoids (such
as AF Jumiko and AF Oxana) These can be
used in the production of wholesome foods
that have a positive effect on consumer
health due to the benefits of the antioxi-
dants
As a research institution, we focus on the
analysis of hemp and work with Czech
and foreign partners, including the Czech
company Agritec Plant Research and the
University of Udine in Italy

of plant species and thousands of varieties from all over the world and
provides excellent opportunities for research and teaching in our purpose-
-designed facilities. These include labs, cold storage rooms, greenhouses for
subtropical and tropical plants, wine cellars, orchards and vineyards.
We continue to develop and extend our research and teaching cooperation with institu-
tions in other countries through international projects and programmes such as Ceepus
and Erasmus+.
Research and developmentOur current research projects cover a wide
range of topics, including evaluating the
impact of drought and pathogens on
crops, innovations in cultivation and nurs-
ery technologies, analysing the nutritional
quality of horticultural crops and products,
breeding new varieties, developing new
foods, and using mycorrhizal fungi to in-
crease productivity in horticulture
Genetics and molecular techniques play
an important role in breeding and growing
horticultural plants The current studies of
epigenetic changes in plant genome due
to stress, gene expression, and identifying

HistoryMendel University in Brno is the oldest
independent specialised university
in the Czech Republic The initial
attempts to establish an agri-
cultural university in Moravia in
the east of the Czech Repub-
lic date back to 1864 but were
thwarted by political, economic
and national issues The university,
then called the Agricultural University
in Brno, was only established after the crea-
tion of independent Czechoslovakia in June
1919 The name was changed in 1995; first to
Mendel University of Agriculture and Forest-
ry and then to Mendel University in Brno to
celebrate Gregor Johann Mendel, one of the
great personalities of Brno and the father of
genetics The university now has five facul-
ties, one institute of education and two uni-
versity enterprises It is also one of the lar-
gest owners of forests in Moravia
