Melba Voice It is with great enthusiasm that I welcome everyone back for another fantastic year at the College. I hope that you and your families enjoyed a wonderful summer break. To our new students and families, particularly at Year 7, I extend a warm welcome to the College community. We look forward to working with you. It has been wonderful to see our Year 7 students take to life in secondary school so readily and it is a testament to our dedicated staff that each of them has started the year so positively. It was a pleasure to visit them at their camp in Mount Evelyn and hear all the wonderful stories about how they were settling in. It was great to have so many parents attend our meet and greet night to see just how well the students are doing. At the other end of the school it is great to see our Year 11 and 12 students hit the ground running. Our VCE students completed their first round of verification tests and have, along with our VCAL students, settled in to their new learning spaces. It is great to see students utilising the new Study Hall for independent study. Over the summer break, continuing through this year we have engaged in many capital works projects. Both the S.T.E.A.M building and the Basketball Stadium continue apace and remain on target for completion at the end of June 2020. We will also have a fence completed by the start of Term 2 that will secure our grounds during the day. Parents are reminded that the student drop off point at school is the gravel carpark next to Ainslie Parklands Primary School. We are installing external speakers to all new buildings and have begun discussions regarding a feature playground as well as adding shade sails and outdoor seating around the school some of which have been remade from the former Junior School site by our staff and students. There is also a Kitchen Garden project in the works that will complement our new kitchens. Many of these ideas and more are being discussed and generated by our Student Voice program one of the key programs in the school. Student nominations for a position on School Council go out this week. While our external features continue to change, so too are we reviewing our existing programs and curriculum. One of the more significant items being discussed currently includes changing, from next year, to a 5 period per day cycle as opposed to the current 4. This will provide us with greater program flexibility and time dedicated to English and Maths. I am also looking at various programs that complement our students’ talents and passions in areas such as music, drama, sport, science and mathematics. I’ll have more information on these next month. I’d like to take the opportunity to thank the existing school council for their ongoing contributions to our school and announce an election is to be conducted for members of the 2019 Melba College School Council. I warmly invite all parents, DET employees and students to consider nominating. I encourage any parent considering joining school council to get in touch with the school to obtain nomination forms. Aaron Sykes Principal

It was great to have a very full first School Council meeting of the year last week.

We were glad to have our new Assistant Principal, Matthew Lee, with us along with our two Junior School Captains, Samantha Oldreive and Meg McDowell.

Sam and Meg gave us some fantastic feedback about how our students, especially the new Year 7s, are settling into the new school year, and we appreciated feedback from their Student Voice meetings regarding outdoor furniture, school diaries, and setting up some lunchtime clubs.

This year the student body will be asked to nominate and elect 2 students to represent them as members of School Council. More details will be forthcoming.

There was much business to discuss, with many exciting things ahead this year. The Principal reported on the numbers of students enrolled this year and the increased interest from primary school parents in sending their children to Melba in 2020. Melba is steadily growing and increasing the opportunities for your child. Mr. Sykes also applauded a great beginning to the new school year and thanked all the students and staff for their dedication and co-operation. He also mentioned the huge success of the swimming carnival.

The majority of the meeting was taken up by an in-depth look at the financial position of the school, the new S.T.E.A.M centre and basketball stadium, as well as a proposed review of the uniform policy.

This was Gary Gleisberg’s last meeting. We would like to express our gratitude for his years of service on School Council and committees. Thank-you for your participation and for your readiness to contribute to discussions. We appreciate everything you have contributed. We wish you and your children the very best. School Council is an important part of our school community. Decisions made in our monthly meetings help shape the Melba of the future. There are a number of vacancies on School Council for 2019, so if you feel that you are able to give up a couple of evenings a month to build a wonderful community at Melba, support and encourage our amazing staff and teachers as they educate our children, and help set the tone of the school, please let our Principal, Mr. Sykes know by 6 March so you can fill out a nomination form. We would be delighted to have you join us.

Our Student Voice team has a very busy and exciting year ahead. Congratulations to our College Captains, Junior School Captains, Year Level Leaders and Student Voice Representatives for taking on a leadership role for 2019. This year Student Voice will be working hard to develop a range of opportunities for student and teacher collaborations both in and out of the classroom including lunchtime activities and the ‘Teach the Teacher’ program. Student Voice members meet every Tuesday to discuss feedback and concerns from their peers, this ensures students are being heard and know their ideas are valued. Leaders are working on projects such as organising college events and exploring ways to give back to the wider community. The College Captains recently met with members from Croydon Rotary to discuss leadership and community engagement opportunities for Melba students and we look forward to working closely with them throughout the year. I am very much looking forward to working with this driven, motivated and passionate group of students and know they are going to achieve great things this year.

Welcome back to 2019! It has been fantastic to see everyone starting the year with such a positive attitude. The term has begun really well with the Wellbeing Team in their new home. The Wellbeing Centre is situated next to the I.T. Centre and across from the Library, on the top floor of building C. We are lucky enough to have two spaces where we can work with groups of students, a break out space and also two egg chairs to assist students when they need some time out. Staff are able to use the spaces as required.

Our dedicated team of Wellbeing professionals this year includes: MRS STACEY (Wellbeing Leader) – Monday – Friday CHRIS WADDELL (Chaplain) – Monday, Thursday and Friday TAMARA MAGRATH (Adolescent Health Nurse) – Monday and Friday JACQUI NOLAN AND LUCY (Counsellor and Therapy dog) – Tuesday SARAH PADBURY (Psychologist) – Thursday MELBA MEDICAL CENTRE (Sandy and Tereza) – Monday TARA BARMBY (MIC Youth Worker) – Thursday FIONA LARSON (SSSO Social Worker) – Wednesday morning At the beginning of the year, Chris and I were lucky enough to be able to support our students at both the Year 7 and Year 12 camps. It was fantastic to be able to work with them in a much more informal manner, and to see their growth as they challenged themselves. March 15 is the National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence (NDA). At Melba we will be involved in a range of activities throughout the day to highlight this very important issue. Welcome back to students and families, I hope you have all enjoyed a safe and relaxing break! It has been an action packed first few weeks of Term 1. Students kick started the year by venturing to Forest Edge in Neerim East for their Year 12 Camp. The camp’s primary focus was to lift student morale and to help motivate students for the challenging year ahead. Over the course of 3 days, students worked with an organisation called Sports And Life Training (SALT), their classroom teachers and camp staff to develop important personal and relationship skills required to be successful in 2019. Students participated in a range of activities, which constantly pushed them outside their comfort zone, challenging their physical, mental, social and emotional capacities. Whilst there was little down time to relax and put their feet up, the skills and relationships developed over the 3 days will no doubt set students up for an exciting and successful year ahead! VCE students found they had little time to recover from camp, starting off the Term with tests to verify they had completed and understood the prescribed holiday homework for each of their subjects. The results and feedback from these Verification Tests, as well as other essential assessments such as the Work Requirement and SACs/ SATs will be monitored closely throughout the year. These tools help us gauge student progress and ensure appropriate support interventions can be put in place to ensure all students achieve success with their learning. Students and families should have a copy of the VCE Handbook, which outlines key aspects of the VCE, as well as the College’s rules and assessment processes. Students and their parents/ guardians are required to familiarise themselves with the handbook and return a copy of the student agreement form to Mr Allan as soon as possible. If you don’t have a copy of the handbook, please contact the College.

Year 12 Camp

During the first 3 days of the term, the Year 12 cohort had our final school camp ever. The camp which was held at Neerim South, included many fun and interesting activities focused on building teamwork and personal skills, with the most important aim being to have fun! We participated in activities such as: raft building, river sledding, mountain boarding, high ropes, flying fox, waterslide and much, much more. As well as the fun adventurous activities, we also participated in a program named SALT (Sport and Lifestyle Training), focused on building skills such as interdependence and teamwork. We also discussed wellbeing and how best we could prepare ourselves for the mental and emotional struggles of Year 12. One of the highlights of the camp was the trivia night, organised by Ms Brown and Ms Luiyf It was a fun filled night during which our knowledge was thoroughly tested and it’s safe to say that all involved had loads of fun. Overall the camp was a great success and everyone in the group had an absolutely fantastic time. Thank you very much to all the teachers and staff involved in organizing and putting together such a great event. Sam Thomas – College Captain Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL)

The Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning is an equivalent course to VCE. The main differences are that assessment is though demonstration of learning outcomes through completion of tasks, and there is no ATAR (a requirement for University entry). At a recent conference Melba had one of the largest VCAL cohorts at approximately 70 students. The Melba VCAL teachers have worked together to revamp our course, and we also developed a set of values using the acronym CARE. Shortly we will be awarding certificates to students who have exhibited Courage, being Accountable, Respect and Effort, as well as CARE students of the month. One of our recent lesson activities for VCAL Intermediate Numeracy involved the students racing to find and scan QR codes. They then answered questions, in relation to percentages and ratios, and completed conversions between fractions, ratios and percentages. VCAL handbooks were distributed to every student during the first weeks of school. If you would like a copy emailed to you, please contact me: [email protected].

Welcome Back

I’d like to commence by welcoming back all Year 10 students and their respective families to the 2019 academic year. I sincerely hope that everybody enjoyed their holidays. In particular, I extend this welcome to students and parents/guardians joining the Melba community in 2019. Work Experience

Whilst Work Experience will not take place until the final week of Term Two, students should locate placements promptly and, having done this, complete the associated paperwork. By doing this, you will maximise the likelihood of obtaining your desired placement. This point is particularly relevant if you are seeking a placement in a competitive industry. It is an expectation that all Year 10 students complete a placement. Elevate Education Sessions

On Tuesday 12 February presenters from Elevate Education completed an incursion at the school. All Year 10 students participated in the Study Sensei and Time Management presentations. The presentations included a range of study tips relating to note taking strategies, study timetables, work- life balance and the benefit of completing practice papers/revision prior to the completion of major assessment items. Beacon Events

There will be a number of Beacon events during this year. These will include, amongst others, the Beacon breakfast, Speed Careers and Mock Interviews. Additionally, there will periodically be other workplace-related opportunities as the year progresses. More details will be provided as the relevant dates approach. General Matters-

Parents and guardians are encouraged to check the accuracy of their personal details (especially contact phone numbers) and the medical information provided in relation to their children. Please provide an explanatory note should your child be out of school uniform on any given day/s.

It is recommended that students bring a clear water bottle to school as the temperatures will reach the high 30’s later this week.

Welcome back! I hope you all had a restful break. I cannot believe how busy Term 1 has been so far. Students have settled into classes well and we are now beginning to see the completion of their first CATs for the year. Swimming Carnival

It was a great to see many students competing in the swimming carnival. This once again was a great day for engaging in activities outside the classroom. Congratulations to our age champions Zain Cearns and Amy Moss who swam superbly. Tasmania Camp 2019

All students have received an expression of interest form to attend the Tasmania Camp. This camp runs in the last week of Term 3, and is a wonderful experience for students. If you are interested in attending ensure the form is returned to the office ASAP. Year 8 students have started the year well and have settled into the routine. Below are some student reflections of their time in Year 8 so far: This year I enjoy wood and I learning to play tennis. (Ryan) Year 8 has been great. Sport is fun. I like some of the subjects so far. (Julianna) Made lots of friends and enjoying performance. Canteen is really good. (James) Many of the students enjoyed the Swimming Carnival and it was great to see so many of the students dressed in house colours.

Tassie Tour

Expression of Interest forms for the Tasmania Camp has been distributed and a copy of the notice is on Compass. If students did not receive a paper copy of the notice, they can be collected from the Junior Administration office. If you have any questions, please contact Kasey Browne the Year 9 Leader or myself. Lateness

It is important that all students are at school on time ready to learn. A reminder that the start of class is 8.50am and that students need to be at school prior to this to ensure that they are able to be in their class on time. If students are late, they need to sign in at the Junior Office. “New Year, New School, New Teachers, New Kids” started one of the 10 Student Voice speeches I was lucky to listen recently. It has been a huge month of change for our newest Melba Students and they have made an outstanding impression on the college community. The year began with Turbo Time. For 5 days students completed a special program, learning how to use Ipads, Compass, read a timetable, find rooms and get to know key staff and other Year 7 students. Students set goals for Term One, set up their books for English and Maths and made a movie about themselves. The fun continued into our camp in Week 2. We had beautiful weather and students enjoyed a great variety of activities (although the pool with Mr Mif was definitely a highlight). Many new friendships were formed and we learnt to work together as a team. We have now had 2 weeks of timetabled classes and the first homework tasks and formative assessment tasks have been completed. We recently held our Year 7 Parent Information Evening and, as indicated earlier students have voted for their representatives on Student Voice. In Launch Pad, we have just started a new block of lessons. Over the next 5 weeks students will cycle through the following lessons. Positive Relationships (with Mr Mammoliti, our Year 7-10 Learning Specialist), What does Respect for Self, Others and the Environment Look Like in our Class (with me), Making the most of Pages (with Ms Brown), Cybersafety (with Mr Groves, our e-Learning Leader) and How to Write a Bibliography (with Ms Lobato, our Librarian) If you would like further information on any of these topics, please check compass or email me. Our our adolescent health nurse Tamara has begun interviews with all of our Year 7 students as part of the START program. The START program looks at the Year 7's transition experience, their level of connection and their strengths and concerns. Next term Tamara will be running some small group sessions to address areas of need identified within the interviews. If you have any concerns or want to know more about this program please email Tamara at [email protected] Below are student accounts of camp and starting at Melba. The Year 7 camp was lots of fun. Everyone made some new friendships and got to know lots of people. The best part of it was the pool. Everyone was in there heaps and had so much fun. The food was really nice and everyone enjoyed it. The activities we did were the Giant Swing, High Ropes, Crate Stacking, Wildlife Room, Pool and Team building exercises. It was a good way to start the year and get to know everyone. Tahlia 702

When I started at Melba College I first felt a bit nervous about starting hard work straight away but when I found out that we would start Turbo Time first I was relieved. Turbo Time was a great way to ease into the year without bombarding all the students with information and homework straight away. We would have different sessions to set up/learn about certain things such as; Compass, English books, iPads, timetables, goals, rules, etc. I really enjoyed the way Turbo Time was set up and the help and confidence the teachers gave the students during it. Chloe 704

On the first day of school I was so excited! My feeling was completely right because I love school at Melba and enjoyed camp and being with my new, amazing friends. The schoolwork is not only bearable but it’s actually lots of fun. I don’t know what my grade 6 teacher was talking about! My favourite subject is English and I can’t wait for Performance and the Production Delaney 704

Deakin Explore Deakin Explore is an excellent resource that allows students to kick-start their course and career exploration. Students can start with courses that lead to a career or start with careers to find courses that lead to it. Students can filter courses and careers by what matters to them; each course and carer lists others that are similar thus allowing students to broaden their options, and students can save their favourite courses and careers to access later, and even share them by email, Facebook and even Twitter. Students are encouraged to visit Deakin Explore and familiarise themselves with it.

Quality Indicators for Learning and Teaching (QILT) The aim of the Quality Indicators for Learning and Teaching (QILT) website to assist students in making informed choices about their higher education options by bringing together survey data from all Australian universities, allowing students to compare student experience and job outcomes. So, students are able to compare the student experience, whether domestic or international, between universities, and also learn more about employment outcomes of the different institutions. The QILT survey program also includes the Employer Satisfaction Survey (ESS) which is an important survey whereby over 4000 employers are asked to rate their newly employed university graduates, based on

several criteria, and thereby ranking universities. The Employer Satisfaction Ratings is well-worth a browse.

Succeeding in the VCE The School for Excellence (TSFX) offers an annual fundraising event “Succeeding in the VCE” to raise

much needed funds for The Fred Hollows Foundation, and to provide students with the skills and information

they need to maximise VCE marks. Featuring a unique range of guest speakers and VCE exam markers, this

exclusive event taking place later this month is very useful for students studying Year 11 or Year 12 in 2019.

Valued at over $250, “Succeeding in the VCE” is free of charge when students make a minimum $10

donation to The Fred Hollows Foundation representatives on the day.

Our Year 11/12 students participated in a Volleyball Round Robin competition at Dandenong Stadium on Friday 15 February. We entered two boys and two girls teams with all teams proving to be very competitive. Pleasingly, our Senior Boys ‘A’ team won all their matches on the day without dropping a set. This was a great effort by the boys and they will play again in the Eastern Region competition on March 28. Team members were: Ezekiel Kheng Lawt, Tom Khuk Zawn, Tluang Bawi Kheng Lawt, Todd Dowler, Khai Za Thang, Lian Hlawn Ching, Bik Khi Teng and Lah Sru Thomas. Our Girls ‘A’ team finished third overall. They had a two set loss to Ringwood, however we pushed them all of the way in the second set, before losing 27-29. The team also had a straight sets loss to Norwood, however they finished their games by defeating Mooroolbark in the third and deciding set. The ‘A’ team was made up of the following students: Pahge Williams, Serina James, Aira Mina, Maria Imai, Jess Taylor, Zun Te Zahlang. Pahge provided the highlights during the day with some rocket overarm serves! Our Girls ‘B’ team were undefeated for the day and as a result they won the ‘B’ pool which was an excellent effort. The following players made up this team: Blet Shi Wah, Wah Sheal David, Rita Famcun, A Ngun Duh Vang, Julia Lambawi, Shee Lay Bell and Sarah Duhlian. Blet Shi and Sarah produced some wonderful serving runs to set up the matches nicely. Thank you very much to both Mr Bryers and Mrs Bourne who ran training sessions at lunchtime and coached these teams on the day.
