169 for the ease and comfort of the little sufferers. Long tables decked out with flowers and fruit, and groaning under the weight of more substantial things, are laid out on the green. The day is beautiful; gladness is on all faces ; everyone seems pleased to have contributed to, or to witness, the success of such a praiseworthy enterprise; and a touch of tender feeling invades every breast as the young convalescents come up in a body and thank their benefactors. Taylor, Theodore Thomas, St. Mary’s Hospital. THE ANTHROPOGLOSSOS.—An imposition of the most barefaced kind is being practised upon the public at St. James’s Hall. A wax head, with :t tin trumpet fixed in the mouth, suspended from the ceiling, is said to sing and articulate distinctly the words of various songs. This effect, the show- man states, is produced by the anatomical construction of the throat of the figure, air being forced through it. Had the exhibitor been satisfied with asserting that a trumpet- sound might be brought forth by these means, the invention might have been applauded ; but to endeavour to delude the public into the belief that the mechanical figure can distinctly speak and pronounce the words is simply absurd, and insulting to the audience who have been induced to part with their money. The voice is that of a man, conveyed to the figure- head. The delusion is so ridiculously transparent that we cannot imagine any sensible person being imposed upon by it. OFFENSIVE EXPOSURE OF DISEASE.—At the recent summer assizes held at Maidstone, before Mr. Justice Willes, Jesse Gray, a herbalist, was indicted for exposing in his shop window, at Chatham, a disgusting picture of a man naked to the waist, the body being coarsely painted to represent an offensive disease of the skin. The defendant withdrew the plea of not guilty which he at first entered, and, upon the recommendation of his counsel, pleaded guilty. The learned judge, after passing a severe censure on the offence, most leniently liberated the defendant on his own recognizances.

DIPHTHERIA AMONGST MEDICAL PRACTITIONERS.—M.Pagès, a medical practitioner of Paris, has just died of diph-tlaeria, taken from a patient affected with that disease whomthe deceased was attending.DOWNPATRICK LUNATIC ASTLUM.—A new lunatic

asylum is about to be built at Downpatrick from drawingsprepared by the county surveyor.QUEEN’S COLLEGE, CORK.—The official confirmation

of the appointment of Dr. Tanner as successor to Dr. Bullenhas been received at the Queen’s College, Cork.REFUSAL TO VACCINATE. - At the Southampton

police-court, a few days since, several persons were chargedwith refusing to allow their children to be vaccinated. The

prejudice which exists amongst the poor population of the

place is difficult to overcome, and the most strenuous measuresare employed to compel obedience to the law. In every casethe full penalty is inflicted, and it is hoped that the endeavoursof the authorities will be attended with complete success.INCREASE OF INSANITY.-From the eighteenth report

of the Commissioners in Lunacy to the Lord Chancellor, which has lately been published, it appears that during thepast fifteen years no less than 5000 patients have been addedduring each period of five years, or 1000 annually. In thefirst and second terms of five years, the addition did not reach5000, but in the last it was greater, an advance having takenplace from 22,852 to 28,285, being an increase of no less than5433. The admissions into all asylums during the last fifteenyears have amounted to nearly 120,000. When divided into

periods of five years, as in the case of the number of inmates Iresident, a great increase will be found of late. Some care-fully compiled tables show that during the first period-namely, in 1849 and the four following years-upwards of

36,000 patients were admitted ; that in the second divisionthe admissions were more than 38,000 ; and that during thefive years ending the 31st of December, 1863, as many as

44,69,i were received. As respects the relative numbers ofmen and women admitted into and discharged from asylumsduring these fifteen years, it appears that more men thanwomen have been admitted, and more women than men dis-charged. The number of recoveries has also been largeramong the women ; the rate of mortality is much greater inthe male than in the female sex. It appears that on the 1stof January, 1849, the number of insane patients in asylumsamounted to 14,560, and on the 1st of January last it hadrisen to 28,285. In the pauper class, according to last return, the number of women exceeded that of the men by 2000. Inthe private class, the number of men exceeded that of thewomen by 795, whereas in 1847 the number of females ex-ceeded that of the males in this class. As exhibiting thegreat and increasing confidence of the community at large inpublic over private asylums, a remarkable change has takenplace, as fifteeen years ago there were in licensed housesnearly as many patients as in hospitals and county asylums, whereas we now find that in the latter there are more thanfive times as many patients as in the former. On the 1st ofJanuary, 1849, there were 6931 patients in private asylums, and 7629 in public. In the former there are now only 4455,and in the latter as many as 23,830. In conclusion, the Com-missioners state that they are concerned therefore, more or

less, in the welfare of 44,695 persons of unsound or defectiveintellect.

ObituaryR. B. RIDLEY, ESQ., MAYOR OF SOUTH SHIELDS.WE deeply regret to have to notice the death of Richard

Baty Ridley, Esq., L.R.C.P. Edin., L. R. C. S. Edin., L. C. A.Lond., &c. &c., and, at the time of his death, Mayor of theborough of South Shields. A few weeks ago, Dr. Ridleyvisited London for a week, and was in his usual health.Shortly after his return to Shields, he felt unwell. In the dis-

charge of his municipal duties on a public occasion, he wasexposed to heavy rain, and got wet through. His symptomsbecame serious, and assumed the form of quartan ague, forwhich his medical advisers blamed the Thames embankment,Dr. Ridley having put up during his stay in town at an hotelin Norfolk-street. It will be interesting to know if any ormany well-authenticated cases of ague having such an originexist.

Be this as it may, the borough of South Shields has lost amost efficient mayor, many of its most respectable inhabitantsa very favourite medical adviser, and the medical professionone of its honoured and active members, just at an age whenmedical men come to the full enjoyment of the ripened confi-dence of the community in the midst of which they live. Dr.Ridley was born in 1812, and so was only fifty-two years ofage. He was a member of the ancient order of Freemasons, andduring his connexion with St. Hilda’s Lodge, South Shields, was elected W.M. on eight occasions. He was also surgeonto the Artillery Corps of South Shields. It is hard to be cutdown in mature life in the full tide of civic honour and profes-sional success ; but in the very memory of his honours and hisusefulness will be the great consolation of his relatives andvery numerous friends.
