A RETURN issued by the Local Government Board shows that on July 1st, 1871, the number of paupers relieved in England and Wales was 973,603. THE Chelmsford Local Board of Health are desirous of appointing a medical officer of health for the district at a salary of £25 per annum. A SERIES of dramatic performances recently given at the residence of Sir Percy F. Shelley, Christchurch, in aid of the National Sanatorium at Bournemouth, produced the handsome sum of £200. A REPORT on the hospital small-pox cases, lately read before the Manchester Board of Guardians, showed that while the mortality among unvaccinated patients was 55 1/3 per cent. of the total number attacked, it was only 4½ per cent. in the case of those who had been vaccinated. THE sum of twenty guineas has been presented to Mr. James Neighbour, the Sanitary Inspector of St. Luke’s, Middlesex, as an acknowledgment of the valuable services rendered by him during the epidemic of small-pox. Mr. Neighbour is one of the most efficient vaccination inspectors in the metropolis, and gave evidence on the subject before the Committee of the House of Commons. M. PULVERMACHER, the well-known medical elec- trician, gave a soiree at his residence at Hampstead, on Saturday evening last. A numerous company, including several members of the medical profession, were present. In the course of the evening various interesting experi- ments were performed, demonstrating the importance of medical electricity. A MEETING of the Royal Star Life Assurance Sick and Medical Benefit Society was held on Thursday evening, Feb. 1st, in the Temperance Hall, Wolverhampton. The prevalence of small-pox and other sickness had caused a great strain on the Society, but it had been able to meet it and to report a balance of £1090. A special paragraph on the report was devoted to the praise of Dr. G. N. Smith, and, better still, the following resolution was agreed to :- That the committee be and is hereby empowered to ex- pend the sum of twenty-five guineas in presenting to Dr. G. N. Smith a testimonial from the members of this Society of their high respect for the integrity and benevolence of his character, and in recognition of his skilful and self- denying labours during the past seventeen years, and more especially during the epidemic of the past year, as chief medical officer of this Society."
