WELCOME MANAGING DIRECTOR, ICC CWC 2019

The size and scale of cricket’s global tournaments have changed beyond all recognition since 1999 and so have the scope and requirements of the media in this ever-changing digital world.

The ICC is committed to making this event a memorable one for all travelling media. We continue to explore ways of improving and enhancing the media experience. However, I would urge all media to keep the ICC updated about their movements or change in plans, in order that we can make the most efficient use of these top-class facilities.

None of this would be possible without the army of volunteers at the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019, many of whom will be deployed in the media working areas to make your experience comfortable and enjoyable.

We thank our broadcast partner STAR Sports for their continuing support of ICC tournaments and all media outlets for their efforts in communicating all the drama of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 to such a wide global audience.

I hope you find these Media Kits useful, interesting and informative and that they whet your appetite for the hugely exciting six weeks to come later in the year.

I would like to welcome all members of the media to the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019, the 12th edition of the ICC’s pinnacle 50-over tournament, which is returning to England and Wales for the first time since 1999.

Steve ElworthyManaging Director ICC Cricket World Cup 2019

The ICC considers the media a vital and respected stakeholder as it shapes opinions and generates huge interest in the game across the world. We are extremely grateful for the support that the media provides to cricket across television, radio, print, social media and the diverse array of digital platforms. Long may that continue.

We have produced 10 Media Kits, covering each of the host cities, to help you all make the most of your visit. These are individual city guides, rather than one covering all of England and Wales, in order that you can plan your trip in the most efficient way.

The round-robin, all-play-all format, which worked so successfully at the 1992 tournament, also enables media and supporters to plan their travels well in advance.

There is so much to see and do across England and Wales, and I would love for the media to spare some time from your professional responsibilities to explore the cities and regions where you’re based.

Closer to the start of the tournament, we will be publishing a Media Guide, which will include up-to-date information on all the competing teams, as well as relevant information about the tournament, venues and media contacts.

It is 20 years since I had the incredible experience of playing in an ICC Cricket World Cup, for South Africa, the last time England and Wales hosted the tournament. It is a huge milestone in a player’s career and people still love talking about our famous tied semi-final against Australia at Edgbaston.

It is an immense privilege now to be on the other side of the boundary, responsible for delivering the best possible tournament for all players, spectators, commercial partners and media. We have been planning for this since 2013.

The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland is made up of England, Wales, Scotland and the six counties of Northern Ireland on the island of Ireland.

The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, to give the country its full title, is made of England, Wales, Scotland and the six counties of Northern Ireland on the island of Ireland.

Britain might be a small country on the fringes of northern Europe at 244km2, it’s less than half the size of France and 40 times smaller than the United States but there is no doubt it is a big hitter when it comes to staging global events.

Its compact geography means you can travel from a bustling urban centre to the “green and pleasant land” (as immortalised in the poem by William Blake and the hymn Jerusalem) and back again with ease.

The UK’s rich history and heritage blends seamlessly with modern, progressive and culturally diverse towns and cities. Whether you want breathtaking landscapes, beautiful architecture or an authentic curry, you will find it all – and more – in England and Wales.

CLIMATE

The south-east tends to have the driest, warmest weather while the west tends to get more rain than other parts of the country. The average daily temperature for London in June is 21oC and 23oC in July; for Cardiff it is 20oC/22oC; Manchester is 18oC/20oC; and Durham 17oC/19oC. It is not uncommon, though, for temperatures to rise into the 30s, certainly in London, from mid-June to mid-July.

The heatwave that covered much of the UK in 2018 was the joint hottest on record, with a top temperature of 35.3oC in Faversham, Kent.

Because of the relative rarity of extreme temperatures, air-conditioning is far from universal in hotels, especially the less expensive ones.

From late March to late October, the UK operates British Summer Time (UTC +1h) and enjoys more than 12 hours of daylight at the height of summer. On 21 June, the longest day of the year, the sun will rise at around 5am and not set until around 9.30pm.

The weather is a British obsession Too cold, too hot, too wet, too dry. The truth is the UK’s climate is temperate but always changeable so it is best to be prepared for all eventualities.

THE MONARCHY & THE COMMONWEALTH

RELIGIONThe Queen is also head of the Commonwealth, which was formed in 1949 and currently comprises 53 nations. Having succeeded her late father to the throne in 1952, she is the longest-reigning British monarch as well as the world’s longest-serving head of state.

While not holding any direct political power, it is the monarch, or sovereign, whom a newly-elected Prime Minister must ask before forming a government. The Queen receives weekly briefings from the PM. While Christmas and Easter remain the most significant

festivals, others such as Diwali and Eid have grown in prominence. Religious buildings and meeting places of all faiths can be found in the UK, some of which are among the most spectacular buildings in the country.

Her husband, or consort, Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, retired from public life in 2017 at the age of 96, having completed more than 20,000 engagements and appearances. He was president of Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC), the owners of Lord’s, in 1949 and 1975.

Britain’s constitutional monarchy traces its origins back to the 10th century AD and Queen Elizabeth II, who will turn 93 on 21 April 2019, remains head of state in 16 countries, including the UK.

According to the 2011 census, around a quarter of the UK population say they have no religion. Of those who do have a religious faith, various forms of Christianity make up about 60% followed by Islam, Hinduism, Sikhism and Judaism.

ARTS & CULTURE

There are myriad cultural landmarks, such as Abbey Road (not far from Lord’s) that was immortalised by The Beatles and William Shakespeare’s birthplace at Stratford-upon-Avon where the Royal Shakespeare Company is based. While London is the focus for much of the UK’s most notable theatres, music venues and art galleries, every city has much to offer.

The ubiquity of the English language means that Britain’s contributions to literature, theatre, cinema and music are known and enjoyed around the world.

SPORT

Enhanced broadcast revenues brought star players from around the world, improved and enlarged stadia and an increase in overseas ownership.

But football is just one part of a rich sporting landscape. Rugby union has its moment in February and March with the Six Nations Championship and the All-England Championships at Wimbledon is one of the four tennis major championships.

Horse racing has its high days too, whether it be top-hat-and-tails glamour of Royal Ascot in June, or the more earthy excitement of racing over fences at the Cheltenham Festival (March) and the Grand National at Aintree, near Liverpool (April).

Golf’s Open Championship (July) is one of the sport’s four global majors while the biennial Ryder Cup, golf’s unique contest between Europe and the USA, generates huge interest, particularly among general sports fans who devour the tribalism of team sports.

Cycling has been a massive growth sport over the past decade, both in terms of participation and spectator interest, fuelled by the performances of Bradley Wiggins and others at the

London 2012 Olympics and in the Tour de France.

Cricket is the national summer sport and both the England men’s and women’s teams typically host touring sides each year. The Ashes, held biennially home and away, is the contest that generates the most coverage and attracts the most interest from non-cricket devotees.

County cricket, which has been central to the sport’s existence for well over a century, has a multi-format capacity for drama and a multi-platform following. T20 packs in the crowds but the four-day County Championship has pulling power too, particularly at some the smaller, attractive venues like Scarborough on the North Yorkshire coast. Funded by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB), BBC radio broadcasts every ball of all domestic matches online and also through its digital sports channel Five Live Sports Extra.

The swiftly growing interest in the women’s game was reflected in the extensive coverage across all media of the ICC Women’s World Cup final 2017 when England beat India in a nail-biter at a packed-out Lord’s.

The Ashes is the contest that

generates the most coverage and interest.

The advent of the Premier League in 1992 turned football into one of England’s great global exports.

The range of food on offer now, to suit all budgets,

is now vast.

FOOD & DRINK

For years, chicken tikka masala became the Brits’ go-to dish, usurping fish and chips, pie and mash and roast beef. The range of food on offer now, to suit all budgets, is now vast.

There is also a retro trend towards food and drink that is somehow imbued with heritage, or artisanal craftsmanship. This covers everything from bread to beer, vegetables to meat. While the traditional British pub is under threat – as drinking at home becomes ever more affordable and convenient – the ‘gastro pub’ remains a nationwide phenomenon. And there are a few more pleasurable activities than settling in at a village pub, either in front of a roaring fire or in a tree-shaded garden, with a pint and a hearty meal.

The UK has undergone a gastronomic revolution, both in terms of the quality and diversity of restaurant or pub food but also in the level adventure seen in people’s own kitchens.

VISAS AND CUSTOMSVisa requirements are frequently revised so you are advised to check with the United Kingdom visa website for the latest information regarding your visit (www.gov.uk/check-uk-visa).

If media require a letter of endorsement to support with their visa application, they should email their request to [email protected]. They are also advised to apply for their visa as early as possible but not more than three months in advance of their arrival date in the UK.

Customs controls at UK points of entry distinguish between goods bought within the European Union and duty free goods bought elsewhere. Visit HM Revenue and Customs website for full details (www.hmrc.gov.uk).

ARRIVAL AND GETTING AROUNDEmirates (www.emirates.com) is the official airline of the ICC and it flies directly from Dubai and rest of the world to the UK’s two busiest airports - Heathrow (the world’s sixth busiest) and Gatwick. Both bear the London prefix, though neither are truly in London. Heathrow, to the west of the city, has two Underground (Tube) stations depending on which terminal you arrive at. There is also the quicker, but more expensive, Heathrow Express train that takes about 15 minutes into London Paddington. The Gatwick Express takes 30 minutes into London Victoria. Other UK airports may offer a more convenient entry point depending on your city/country of departure.

The national rail network (www.trainline.com) is extensive but can also be expensive. Ticket prices vary widely depending on the day, and time of day, you travel. Booking well in advance can save money. Check www.nationalrail.co.uk for journey info and times and www.trainline.com for tickets (both sites also have apps). National Express coaches (www.nationalexpress.co.uk) are a cheaper way of travelling longer distances.

TRAVELLING IN ENGLAND & WALES

SAFETY AND SECURITYEngland and Wales are generally considered safe by international standards, with low rates of street crime and violence.

Like anywhere, it is worth using common sense and taking sensible precautions like those you probably already practise in your own country.

• It is advised that you have insurance cover for your travel to the UK.

• Plan your route before you leave.

• Do not leave your bag unattended anywhere – this can lead to a security alert.

• In the UK, cars drive on the left.

To ensure you cross the road safely, use designated crossings and only cross when the green figure shows.

Take note of the signs indicating to “look right” or “look left” to spot oncoming traffic.

All media personnel are advised to refer to the specific advisories issued by their respective national agencies.

ARRIVAL AND GETTING AROUND (CONTINUED)London’s extensive Tube network covers most areas of the city, including many suburbs. Visit www.tfl.gov.uk for journey planning. Manchester and Newcastle have tram/light rail systems and buses are plentiful and useful in all major cities.

Britons drive on the left-hand side of the road and driving habits are generally calm and law-abiding. There is a very good motorway network that links major conurbations but traffic can be heavy in the cities, especially during the morning and evening commuting times.

There are many car rental options but they can be expensive. Bear in mind, too, that parking is very limited at venues. Central London operates a congestion charge. Uber is another convenient and popular way of getting around. The passenger App can be downloaded from www.uber.com/ae/en/ride.

WIFI AND MOBILEMost restaurants, pubs and cafés offer free WiFi, though you might be required to register. There are also hot spots in many places, delivered by O2, BT and The Cloud (Sky). Virgin Media offers free WiFi at more than 250 London Underground stations. Cities will most likely be covered by a 4G mobile signal, or at worst 3G. Check with your own mobile provider to see if they offer international roaming for a set daily charge or try www.giffgaff.com for a UK SIM card. Pay-as-you-go phones are also an option.

The international dialling code for the UK is +44. The international access code to dial from the UK is 00. UK mobile numbers usually begin with 07.

BANKS AND CURRENCYThe currency in the UK is the pound (GBP), also referred to as sterling. As of January 2019 £1 = US$1.27. ATMs are everywhere in towns and cities and most main streets have banks (opening hours 9am-4pm approx) to exchange money. But Britain is becoming an increasingly cashless society with contactless card payments (up to £30) available in shops, bars and eateries. Many establishments also take Apple Pay and Google Pay.

ELECTRICITYThe UK uses a three-point plug at 230V / 50Hz.

Approximate journey times by road and rail between the ten host cities.

BY ROADRoad journey times according to www.theaa.com.

Road journeys are based on travel between city centres, not venues. Note that the venues for Durham (Riverside Durham) and Southampton (Hampshire Bowl) are located outside those cities.

BY RAILRail journey times are based on the most frequent/direct Monday-Friday services. Services on Saturday and Sunday will vary and may be less frequent. Some cities have more than one rail station, servicing different routes. Please check www.nationalrail.co.uk or www.trainline.com for timetables and tickets.

† Not a direct train. Journey will require one or more changes.

BY PLANETravelling by plane is only a sensible option for the longer distances, for example London to Durham (use Newcastle airport). Visit www.skyscanner.net for flight schedules and prices.
