CARDIFF, WALES.

WELCOME MESSAGE The Lord Chief Justice of

England & Wales

Cardiff is the capital of Wales and its largest city. It is the seventh largest city in the United Kingdom.

The city is situated in the historic county of Glamorgan. The area boasts of inhabitants as far back as 6000BC though it only became the capital of Wales officially in 1955.

It has been the home of the Welsh Assembly, the Senedd, since 1999.

Cardiff offers an astounding range of unique attractions, top class entertainment and a different shopping experience – all of these within walking distance of City Hall. State-of-the-art architecture can be found alongside historic captivating buildings. Both Cardiff City Centre and Cardiff Bay offer exciting temptations for all.

On behalf of the Judiciary of England and Wales, it is my great

honour and privilege to welcome you to Cardiff for a special 50th Anniversary of the Commonwealth Magistrates’ and Judges Association Conference.

I am particularly pleased that the CMJA has chosen to mark this

important anniversary in Wales and I am confident that you will be offered a warm welcome and enjoyable experience during your time here.

The theme for this conference is ‘CMJA at 50: Back to the Future’. This is a fitting theme for such a special anniversary which will

allow us to reflect on the important work achieved over the last 50 years, and set the goals of the future for our judiciaries.

These conferences enable us to share our experiences and

continue the great relationships forged between all members of the CMJA. I encourage everyone to make the most of their time in Wales and to enjoy some of the excellent scenery and cultural attractions.

I look forward to seeing you in Cardiff in September 2020.

The Rt. Hon. The Lord Burnett of Maldon, Kt. PC

Aims and Objectives of the Conference To promote better understanding amongst judicial officers of all ranks and from all parts of

the Commonwealth of judicial independence issues and to explore the approach to those issues in different parts of the Commonwealth;

To promote greater awareness amongst the magistrates and judges of the Commonwealth, of international treaties and law relating to the development and access to justice, and to consider the practical application of that body of law;

To enhance networking within the Commonwealth Magistrates’ and Judges’ Association on judicial developments.
