You can study latest technology of processing for paperboards and resin films ! Experiment ! Analysis ! Evaluation ! Students research independently !

Professor / Shigeru NAGASAWA Assistant Professor / Kazuki UMEMOTO

Computational mechanics and intelligent support, plasticity processing Laboratory

Professor / Shigeru NAGASAWA, Assistant Professor / Kazuki UMEMOTODr. Nagasawa specializes in plastic processing of paperboard and resin films. His research contributes to industry of them. He respects independency of students. Dr. Umemoto is mainly research regarding multi-legged robot using flexible actuator and robust stability of non-liner systems. He is also very kind, so you can whatever you want to them‼

Products such as box for snack, liquid containers, crystal display are made by punching die processing. In this processing, the outbreak that has poor cutting becomes the problem. Conditions for processing is empirically determined by each producer. Therefore, we try to improve them by evaluating and developing processing method. For example, we study about cutting properties and folding properties of cardboard and the resin at the time of punching die processing in this laboratory.

The student study at their own pace. The atmosphere in the laboratory is friendly, so we can share not only research but also daily life. Since there are many foreign students, we can get a lot of opportunity to share cultures and to talk in English. We have two seminars a week. In the seminar, we report present status and progress of each study to our teachers and revise the directionality of the study. I think that you can enjoy the student life other than the study enough if you can push forward your study premeditatedly and properly.

Associate Professor / Yasuhide KOBAYASHIAt morning seminar, discuss with student eager. He cared for student, so you can well have advice on your study. And you can have suggestion of study conference in japan or other country. It is considered on your progress, so you don't worry about conference presentation.

In order to control objects, we need to modeling the object, but if we include the sound and wave medium in the controlled object, it will be difficult to make an accurate model. However, by using robust control theory, it becomes possible to design a stable control system even for controlled objects that are difficult to model. Shown below subject of studies on laboratory.Thermoacoustic: Experimental elucidation of thermoacoustic phenomenon apply active noise control theory.Wave dissipating system: Active wave dissipating system using horizontal plate.Servomotor: Build controller apply controlled object's physical parameter.Vibration generation: Vibration control using vibration generator.

Morning seminar is start at eight. This seminar is report that your progress of study on a week. English monograph seminar is once a week. A person in charge reading English monograph related the person's study, and explain simply about the monograph. The person changes every week. There is no restraint time other than the seminar above.Participate in study conference for master's students, once a year as a guide. Think by yourself ! Critical thinking is important ! Work hard and play hard !

Professor / Ikuo TANABE Technical Staff / Satoshi TAKAHASHI

Production and Machining Engineering Laboratory

Professor / Ikuo TANABEProfessor Tanabe gives unique advice and supplies communication skills that will prepare you for your future as an engineer in Japan and abroad. The research areas covered at this laboratory contribute to the manufacturing research field in relevant areas such as neural network analysis and new machining cooling methods. This laboratory is cutting-edge due to its uniqueness and originality.

Research done at our laboratory focuses on contributing to the improvement of manufacturing through productivity enhanced machining processes, quality engineering software and many more. Because of this the work done at our laboratory can be classified into two big areas: experiment-centered and desk work-centered research. In the case of the experiment-centered research, CAD design and FEM analyses are done in order to create new experiment devices. These devices are then manufactured at the NUT Machining Center and experiments are subsequently carried out. In the case of desk work-centered research, students carry out programming, development and evaluation of software using C-language.

Students can do research planning and experiments at their very own pace. Our laboratory does not have morning seminar, evening seminar or research core time. The reason for this is that students must independently plan their schedules so that research milestones and deadlines are met on time. Here, personal progress reports are expected by Professor Tanabe at least one time per week. Based on this personalized meetings, that involve discussion and feedback, students can plan the best course of action to improve their research methods and results. Advice is always available so that researches advance in the right direction.

Aiming for Cooperation and Symbiosis of Mega Machines, Humans and Environments as a System Studying the System Dynamically and Scientifically from Macro and Microscopic Views Making Innovation of Safety and Comfort of the System

Professor / ABE Masajiro

Machine-Environment System Design Engineering Laboratory

Professor / ABE MasajiroAutonomy of each student is respected and we can study freely. However when we face difficult tasks, we can get many appropriate advices from professor that will help us very much. Our professor also has a humorous aspect, so you can study with comfortable conditions under less stress or pressure.

According to subjects, we conduct research with using dynamic numerical analysis and experiments by the following three groups.HSD (Hybrid Safety System Design and Development) GroupFor construction machines working on rough terrain, we are challenging to design and develop hybrid safety systems that can ensure the safety of the machines mainly related to rigid stability and structural failure while cooperating with human.SDE (Symbiotic Design with Environment) GroupWe are aiming to establish system safety design methods and guidelines for management and operation to harmonize with the environment for materials and cargo handling machines used at harbors in severe environments such as strong wind or earthquake.GMD (Granular Materials Dynamics based Design) GroupWe are exploring optimum design methods based on dynamic analysis for many types of machines dealing with various granular materials such as snow, soil and waste.

We are carrying out projects by each group mentioned above. Beside the project theme of the entire group, individual research theme is given to each member. The highest grade students become project leaders to promote research. According to each research theme, students autonomously make detailed research plan and put experimental and/or numerical analysis into effect with mutual guidance. Regularly, we have meeting and seminar once in every week. Then, we discuss about the status and progress of research and sometimes exchange views about related research trends abroad with our professor. There is no core time, so the students can study freely with self-management. We also plan and practice various events such as parties or summer trip at special occasion for deepening our member’s friendship.

Solving problems, engineers's mission. Originality, ingenuity and practice. Always think the "WHY".

Professor / Hiroyuki OHTA

Laboratory of Machine Elements

Professor / Hiroyuki OHTAHe is a professor who guides and advices us in an enthusiastic and passionate way. If we don’t understand something, he carefully explains us and makes us think the “why” of everything. Although he is quite strict regarding the research, when we have an event like a “nomikai” he is vey gentle and everybody have a good time.

In the Machine Element Laboratory, we research about machine elements that are used in various places, such as automobiles, bullet trains, household electrical appliances, machine tools, etc. to improve their performance that directly leads to energy saving of machinery. Specifically, in collaboration with companies and by using softwares such as multibody analysis (MBA) or finite element method (FEM), we experiment and analyze the sound, vibration and dynamics of machine elements that cause problems to the industry and propose a solution to their problems.

The core time of is 9: 00-17: 00. Seminars are held twice a week, where we translate books related with machine elements from English to Japanese and read and present technical papers. Although there is no seminar progress report, we discuss we the professor everyday to deeply understand and confirm that our research is going in a good direction. Those who carry out experiments are often in the experimental room (soundproof room, anechoic chamber), and those who do simulations are often in the laboratory workstation. Everyone in the laboratory have a good relationship with each other.

Machining using ultrasonic vibration Observe internal stress in glass material Subtle machining with invisible force

Professor / Hiromi ISOBE

Precision Machining and Mechanism Laboratory

Professor / Hiromi ISOBEHe is a tough teacher, but he will guide us kindly when we face challenges. He is a National Institute of Technology and NUT's OB, so he understands our hobbies and actions.

Development of technology to photograph a machining phenomenon.■Development of technology to photograph a machining phenomenonThere are many unknown points in a machining phenomenon in the ultrasonic band. Therefore, we elucidate a machining phenomenon by high-speed visualization technique of internal stress.■Application to small diameter drilling technologyThe small-diameter-drill has low rigidity. The rotating drill superimposed with axial ultrasonic vibration motion reduces machining resistance and improves the machined surface and tool life.■Creation of surface textureLathe processing using ultrasonic vibration creates micro texture on the surface. Textures have the effect of improving the wear characteristics.

Research is conducted by a team of two or three members. The morning of student begins by sending an email with the research plan of the day to teacher. There is a core time from 8:00 to 17:00. We have a seminar every morning, and students report their achievements once a week.Jigs and parts of equipment necessary for experiments need to be designed, analyzed and manufactured by yourself. New students can develop their abilities with the guidance of teachers and seniors.

Planning is important ! Grinding and polishing ! Practical use of next-generation single crystal materials

Associate Professor / Hideo AIDA

Crystal Engineering Laboratory

Associate Professor / Hideo AIDADr. Aida is an associate professor who joined to our university June two years ago. Since Dr. Aida previously worked in a company, you can be taught what to do after entering a company. Dr. Aida is a kind and friendly teacher to the students.

We are conducting research on crystal substrate for semiconductor in our laboratory. Silicon crystals are currently used as the mainstream semiconductor. The performance of a semiconductor is determined by the material of the substrate. Silicon carbide and gallium nitride, called next generation single crystals, are superior to silicon in performance as semiconductors. However, the current state of substrate processing technology in the next generation single crystal is still under development. In this laboratory, we aim to contribute to the practical application of next generation single crystals by researching substrate processing technology.

There is no core time and morning seminar in our laboratory. Therefore, students can do research at their own pace. Since we have a progress report meeting every Monday, we need to do research well. At the progress report meeting, we will make presentations on research in front of everyone. The teacher gives us adequate advice, so we can improve our research progress.

πάντα ῥεῖ (Panta rhei,"everything flows") by Heraclitus Those who grasp flows can grasp the world ! Study a lot, play a lot.

Professor / TAKAHASHI Tsutomu Technical Staff / Shuichi YAMADA

Fluids Engineering and Rheology Laboratory

Professor / TAKAHASHI TsutomuOur professor is very supportive of students doing their best. Thinking that necessaries for a future image of students, he advises for research activities. He often expands and develops our researches because he’s working in many fields, his knowledge is diverse. We have many opportunities for studying abroad and doing conference presentations. Students can grow up by joining them.

[wind-group]It is thought that vortices give worse effects on mechanical engineerings such as crushing buildings and dissipating energy. However, we are thinking that one type of them can transfer to the power of mechanical. The wind turbine powered by longitudinal vortices has been developed. Now, we are developing new product driven by longitudinal vortcies.[rheology-group]Industries are using a lot of complex fluids like cosmetics, detergent, cement, and melting plastics. Most of their flow characteristics aren't known clearly. So, we are investigating the characteristics by Rheometer and visualization.

There are many working styles, night or daytime type because we don't have the core time. It means students have to advance own research by themselves. The most important thing is to act positively. We have two seminaries and one briefing session weekly. In one seminary, we are learning technical terms and senses relative to fluid mechanics with a famous English photobook and textbook. In the briefing session, we do own presentation about what we did. We discuss the contents and determine the direction of research. We are always welcoming you to come to our lab.

Professor / Seiji KAMIMURA Assistant Professor / Morimasa TAKATAAssistant Professor / Yukinobu SUGIHARA

Snow and Ice Engineering Laboratory

Professor / Seiji KAMIMURAHe is the most active and friendly, encouraging professor. He is always telling an interesting story about our research during the seminar and explains everything in an easy way to understand, both in English and Japanese. Therefore, he engaged in many other activities such as volunteering and lectures and he has a wealth of experiences and knowledge of all specifics.

At the Kamimura laboratory, we are studying about snow and ice. Snow is a major obstacle for people living in snowy countries. Our laboratory has compiled damage data on snow and we are doing research to prevent that disaster. On the other hand, snow and ice are also expected to be used as energy resources. So, we are developing guns that emit eco-friendly ice bullets to repel harmful birds. Our research subjects are unique to the world-class laboratory called Snow and Ice Engineering.

NO CORE TIMEOur laboratory has no core time, so we can make our own schedule. Also you can focus on activities such as part-time jobs and school clubs. MORNING SEMINARMorning seminar starts from 8AM. So, if you have any questions or if you have any problems, you can discuss with Kamimura professor every morning. Every seminar’s contents are different. We do lightning talk and workshop for improve presentation skills and business English.EVENTSEverybody in this Laboratory are all so friendly and talkative. We have events every season such as cherry-blossom viewing, fireworks display, BBQ and hot pot.

Professor / SUZUKI MasataroWhile respecting the autonomy of the students, he gives them appropriate advice to solve every problem they may face. In addition, he is a friendly professor who likes joking, which makes the teacher-student relation feel much closer.

•Acoustic ExcitationBy applying sound waves from a speaker to a jet diffusion flame, the flame shape changes. In our laboratory, we are elucidating the mechanism of acoustic excitation phenomenon through measurement and analysis under various conditions.•ThermophoresisIn any space where there is a temperature gradient present, small particles move in a strange way. If this movement can be clarified, control of soot particles in combustion engines could be expected.•SmolderingSmoldering is a form of combustion which involves a large amount of smoke that proceeds without the presence of a flame. In this laboratory, we are conducting experiments to elucidate the mechanism of smoldering.•ReignitionIn a fire, after extinguishing activities have ended, unburned combustible material may re-ignite. Reignition can be very unpredictable, which makes fire-extinguishing activities extremely difficult. In our laboratory, we are studying how to extinguish fires without any risk of re-ignition, and how to prevent the re-ignition of flammable materials.

In this laboratory, there is no core time and there are no morning seminars. For this, students can proceed with their laboratory activities at their own pace. However, if they don’t plan or work properly, leading to their research not progressing, they will most likely get in trouble when presenting their progress reports.Progress report seminars are twice a week, and there is a preestablished order in which people present. Seminars are extremely important since there is also a Q&A session in which students get feedback regarding their research topic. This makes it clearer for them to know what to do next in their investigation. This is a laboratory where you can develop the ability to find and solve problems by yourself.

Our researches are from dragonflies to supersonic aircraft. Respecting individual autonomy of students. Chase best award‼

Associate Professor / Wataru YAMAZAKI

Computational Fluid Dynamics Laboratory

Associate Professor / Wataru YAMAZAKIProf. Yamazaki is very kind hearted delightful person who always ready to support his supervising students in appropriate ways to instruct and discuss everything from the beginning. Accordingly, he is approachable enough to take close communication with students during a full degree program until their graduation. So you may able to consider everyone in the lab will be your friend.

Our research topics are related with fluid/gas dynamics, and including both CFD simulations and experiments. For instance, we are developing a new concept of supersonic aircrafts, optimizing wind turbine blades, flapping wings as dragonflies, fish breeding and ventilation technology. These researches will contribute to improving fuel economy of aircraft and an efficiency of power generation of wind turbines. Some of our research themes are as follows: 1. Development of efficient design optimization methods for wing/airfoil. 2. Design optimization of wind turbine blades considering uncertainties, 3. PIV flow field measurement around flapping wings or fish larvae in a rearing tank.

Prof.Yamazaki respects students' personal life, so it's not decided ordinarily what time we should come to the laboratory. Most of us come to the laboratory in the morning, but some students come from afternoon until midnight, thus you can manage your time by yourself. We have a monthly progress report and English journal paper introduction meetings. For that, there are a few hours of core time in a week that we have to spend doing research. Our International as well as Japanese lab-mates are very friendly, so we often go to dinner together, and sometimes hold a BBQ party.

Professor / Takabumi FUKUDA

What is the "Safety"? Safety is our No1 priority. Safety in fundamental of technology.

System Safety Engineering Laboratory

Professor / Takabumi FUKUDADr. Fukuda, who is at the forefront of machine safety, interacts with various companies and people involved in safety. He has many schedules, but comes to the lab. and talks with the students. Everyone in the lab enjoys ordinary conversation as well as research while eating sweets.

Professors contribute to the prevention of occupational accidents by giving lectures on safety at companies and educational institutions outside the university.According to international safety standards, designers consider safety, but in Japan, safety cannot be said to be high, and in many cases, safety is left to managers. For this reason, our laboratory conducts research activities considering safety from the designer's point of view.

The core time of our laboratory is from 10:00 to 17:00. Seminars for progress reports are held every Monday. we have a lot of opportunities to get involved with people outside of the university, so we feel responsible, but I can expand my knowledge. We are also working on research themes specific to each field. In addition, it is necessary to set up a forum for discussions not only with progress seminars but also with professors and laboratory members, and to exchange opinions.

Development of high-performance lightweight magnesium (Mg) alloys, which can be applied to transportation vehicles, is a main objective. We are doing collaborative work with industries. This "industry-academia" colloboration helps us to tackle issues which hinder wide application of Mg alloys. Also, we are participating some national projects which motivate us to do creative work.

We have machines for casting, extrusion, and rolling. They enable us to freely design new alloys and processing conditions. Also, various microscopes such us optical microscopes and electron microscropes are available as well as mechanical testing machines. Professor does not set core time, and students can make their own schedule. These work environment encourages us to improve the planning ability of research.

Explore the nano-scale world. See the unseen and know the unknown. The smaller it is, the bigger it is.

Associate Professor / Tomoyuki HOMMA

Nano and Atomic Scale Analysis Laboratory

Associate Professor / Tomoyuki HOMMAHe always has that cheerful smile on his face. He loves fresh coffee and always invite us for a coffee break while discussing about research or just have a chit chat about recent news. No matter how busy he is, he never failed to spend some of his time to give advice or opinion whenever we need it.

We focus on observing nanostructures of materials to control the structure and develop physical properties of materials by using transmission electron microscopy. The materials that we are using are aluminum and titanium alloys, nickel-based superalloys and thermoelectric materials. Lightweight aluminum alloys with their ability to increase hardness with heat treatment are getting attention for car body while titanium and nickel-based superalloys which are used in jet engines are required to increase their properties for higher performance. Also, thermoelectric materials that can change heat waste into power can help in realizing SDG’s 13th.

Our laboratory research work starts at 9:00 until 18:00. There is no morning seminar but we have progress seminar once a week and students will present every two weeks as they will be divided into two groups. Graduate students are trained to make their presentation slides in English but it is acceptable to present in Japanese whereas, undergraduate students are free to choose either one. Research works mainly include making samples, polishing samples, conducting heat treatment and sample observations with a few types of microscopes followed by analysing the data. We are happy to help new members with the best we can.

Energy material lab.

Prof. / Masatoshi TAKEDA, Asst Prof. / Masaaki BABAProf. Takeda is always gentle to us and he always gives us earnest advices even if he is busy. He tells us instructive stories (sometimes funny stories) based on his experience. We can feel free to ask to Prof. Baba because he is very friendly, and he gives us valuable suggestions.

We are studying about “Thermoelectric material and device”, “Electrocaloric effect” and “Heat storage material”. Thermoelectric materials and devices can directly convert thermal energy (such as waste heat from power plant, vehicles and body heat) into electricity. Electrocaloric effect is a physical phenomenon which absorbs / generates heat by applying periodic field to a ferroelectric material. This is one of promising technologies for miniaturerized cooling system. VO2, which is a a solid-solid phase change material, can be utilized for solid-state heat storage system and temperature leaving technologies.

We have a morning seminar from 8 am on every weekday to present and discuss about our research progress. The aim of this seminar is to get advices and opinions from professors and other members, and is to broaden our horizons by listening to different research topics. After the seminar we carry out research at our own pace.In addition, even if you have no specialized knowledge when you are assigned to this laboratory, you can get enough knowledge to proceed your research by attending seminors held in our laboratory every week.

Contribution science in the forefront of technology Imagination is not less than creativity. Evaluation of stuff is easier than that of staffs.

Professor / Ikuo IHARA

Ultrasound and Non-destructive evaluation Laboratory

Professor / Ikuo IHARASupervisor has been mentoring us very diligently based on him different careers and research experiences, which allows us to have wider and deeper view of thinking. He had worked at a private company before so that they sometimes made some helpful advices for not only our research activity but also our future work.

In many industries and engineering fields, there are a lot of demands for non-destructively measuring and monitoring some characteristics such as mechanical properties, temperature, and defects inside a material. We have been pursuing the study on quantitative and noninvasive measurement method utilizing ultrasound to meet these demands. Ultrasound is a very attractive and effective method for non-destructively evaluating materials and products. We are trying to develop novel non-contact monitoring system at high temperature and to create measurement theory by taking advantage of laser ultrasonic, and air-coupled ultrasound.

Our laboratory basically has a core-time from 9 A.M. to 5 P.M., we routinely spend as follows; Morning: make a plan to do on the day according to our research progress, then begin to act.Afternoon: basically, keep doing the experiments along the plan.Evening: make a plan for future effort by reviewing our achievement. We have an English-language literature seminar about ultrasonic measurement and a progress seminar for each member (once a week each). We make a discussion about the problem in each study with supervisor and other members in lab. It is recommended that we should explain our idea logically and briefly.

Creation of novel micro/nano fabrication technologies "Big" achievements with nicro/nano processing Working seriously and actively on research

Associate Professor / MIZOSHIRI Mizue

Micro/Nano processing Laboratory

Associate Professor / MIZOSHIRI MizueDr. Mizoshiri takes good care of us students in the lab. and visits to the laboratory frequently, so we can feel free to consult about the researches and get accurate advices. She is also a very friendly teacher because she actively participates in the events in the laboratory.

We are working on the creation of next-generation microfabricat ion technology and the appl icat ion of microdevices using special “light” lasers. Specifically, there are three themes of (1) Three-dimensional microfabrication (micro 3D printers), (2) Thin-film thermoelectric devices, (3) New magnetic domain observation methods. All of these themes are using the “light” and we research on fabrication, device, and observation. Microfabrication technology is not only a miniaturization by integration, but also a dream technology that realizes new functions by utilizing the “size effect” generated in the micro/nano scales.

We students have a flex time system. Most of us usually come in laboratory until about 10:00 a.m., and they advance the researches along each plan. The researches results will make presentation at a weekly progress seminar. In the English paper seminar, we introduce the selected articles and discuss them with members of the laboratory, to increase mutual research knowledges. We can get many chances for making presentation in international and domestic academic conferences depending on ones' research results. We regularly hold the laboratory events such as a cherry-blossom viewing, fireworks festivals, and camps to deepen our friendship.

Integrating biology and mechanical engineering Proposing new concept Work hard, play hard !

Specially Appointed Associate Professor / Kan SHOJI

Nano Bio Integrated systems Lab.

Specially Appointed Associate Professor / Kan SHOJII was just assinged to NUT at Feb. 1st, 2020. I'm really looking forward to studying and developing bio-integrated systems with NUT's students.

We are aiming to develop a new mechanical system that living materials and mechanical systems are combined. Bio-integrated devices including biohybrid robots and biosensors have the potential to provide specific functions (bio-compatible, self-organization, chemical driven, and high sensitivity) that are difficult to build with conventional mechanical systems. Especially, we would like to design bio-integrated devices by focusing on the interfaces connecting biological and mechanical systems.

We will make our group charter with my students. I will give my best to support my students, so they can get the best lab life. More specifically, I will develop abilities for logical thinking and communication by encouraging my students to attend conferences and discussing with famous researchers. In addition, to incubate researchers and engineers who are internationally competitive, I will encourage my students to study overseas and attend international conferences.
