MEASURING MASS AND VOLUME

WHAT IS MASS?

Mass measures the amount of matter or “stuff” an item contains.

Mass is different from weight. On the moon where there is less gravity than on Earth, we would weigh less, but our mass would remain the same.

If I travel to the moon and puke my breakfast on the way to the moon, would my mass change?

How is Mass Measured?

Mass is measured with a balance in units called grams (g).

HOW DO YOU USE A BALANCE?

Slide all the riders to the zero point.Place the object GENTLY on the pan.Slide the riders, one at a time, until the pointer moves

to the zero marker! Start with the largest rider first (100), then the 10s,

and finally the 1s. Make sure the rider falls into the notch!

The mass of the object is the sum of all the riders.

PRACTICE THE MATH!

Find the mass by adding the numbers of each rider together to calculate the total mass.

For example: On the balance on the right the 100 rider is at 100, the 10s rider is at 20, and the 1s rider is at 3.5.

So add, 100 + 20 + 3.5 = 123.5g

PRACTICE!

1. What is the mass indicated on the balance?  ________ + ______ + _______ = ___________700 20 2.9 722.9g

PRACTICE!

2. What is the mass indicated on the balance?  ________ + ______ + _______ = ___________200 0 0.5 200.5g

PRACTICE!

3. What is the mass indicated on the balance?  ________ + ______ + _______ = ___________0 40 5.5 45.5g

WHAT IS VOLUME?

Volume is the amount of space an object takes up.

You can measure the volume of a solid or a liquid, but liquids change shape depending on the shape of the container they are in.

HOW IS VOLUME MEASURED?

Volume is measured with a graduate in units called liters (L) or mililiters (mL).

HOW DO YOU USE A GRADUATE?

Place the graduate on a level surface.

Read from eye level!Read from the bottom

the meniscus (curve).Read the lines

carefully on the graduate. The lines can be worth 1.0mL, 0.1mL, or 2.0mL each

What is the volume of the graduated cylinder?

46 mL

PRACTICE!

1. What is the volume of the graduated cylinder?

6.2 mL

PRACTICE!

2. What is the volume of the graduated cylinder? 35 mL

PRACTICE!

3. What is the volume of the graduated cylinder? 74 mL
