Dear Parents and Carers Welcome back Hope you had a restful and relaxing holiday break. As you are aware, Dr Yashar Duyal has gained a position at a secondary school and we wish him all the best at his new school. We are pleased to welcome Mrs Amy Backas who will be Acting Assistant

Principal. Please make her welcome as she becomes acquainted with you and your children. A special welcome back to Ms Pina Caruso who is undertaking the role of Year 6 Team Leader and Mr Ivan Bromilow, Year 6 teacher. As you walk in the school you will notice the works that have been undertaken to make our environment fresh and clean. A big thank you to Mr Turan Calik for his work during the summer break. Our thoughts are with the many of our communities across the state who experienced devastating bushfires. We wish them well in their journey of recovery. Also, our thoughts are with the families and friends of the Turkish citizens who suffered in the earthquake and the aftershocks that struck near the town of Sivrice, in eastern Elazig province in Turkey. You will be aware of the emerging outbreak of novel coronavirus. We will keep you informed as we receive advice. We have been advised by Department of Health and Human Services to remind everyone to protect against infections by practising good hand hygiene and respiratory hygiene. Cover your mouth and nose when coughing and sneezing with a tissue, or cough into your elbow, dispose of the tissue into a bin and then wash your hands afterwards. Wash your hands regularly, after using the toilet, and before eating. We looking forward to working with you in partnership in 2020 to achieve the best for your children. Warm regards Mrs Margaret Leach School Principal

MOBILE PHONES Parents are reminded that mobile phones and other personal mobile devices, including smartwatches must be handed to the office each morning for safe keeping until the end of the school day. The school’s insurance cover will not compensate damaged, lost or stolen personal mobile phones and the school does not accept responsibility for lost or damaged student mobile phones.

The Minister for Education released a new Students Using Mobile Phones Policy for all Victorian government schools on 7 October 2019. This policy requires that from Term 1 2020, students who choose to bring mobile phones to school must have them switched off and securely stored during school hours, including recess and lunchtime. Whilst the Victorian Government acknowledges that we live in a technology-rich world where mobile phones are an important communication tool, research has found that mobile phones can be disruptive in classrooms and open to misuse at school. The unregulated presence of mobile phones in classrooms can undermine students’ capacity to think, learn, remember, pay attention and regulate emotion. OUR VALUES Students are discussing our behaviour expectations in classrooms. Please take the time to discuss our matrix (below) with your child. It is important students and parents understand our values and the behaviour we expect at MHPS.

Hello everyone!

Welcome back to school for 2020. My name is Amy Backas ( ) and I am the new Acting Assistant

Principal. I am very excited to be a Meadow Heights Primary School and watch our wonderful school community all achieve their potential. I’m looking forward to getting to know each and every one of you. I have gone around to all classrooms to introduce myself and have set myself the goal of learning all names by the end of the term. So if you see me in the yard or around the school please come and introduce yourself – I can only achieve my goal with

your help! In just a few short days it is very clear to me that this is a warm, supportive and caring school community. I have already seen students making new friendships, helping each other in the yard and working together to achieve goals.

I am a massive animal lover who supports Essendon (AFL), Melbourne Stars (BBL) and Melbourne Ice (AIHL). In my free time I enjoy taking my cavoodle Sadie to the dog beach, watching movies with my husband and baking with my nephew and niece.

I think it is very important to be at school every day. If you are not sick then you should be at school. School is the best place to learn new skills and make long lasting friendships. I’m still friends with people from my primary school! Coming to school every day is the single most important part of your child’s education. We want our students to get a great education, and the building blocks for a great education begin with students coming to school each and every day. To maximize your child’s learning opportunities, they need to attend school at least 95% of the time.

♦ Regular attendance enables children to build upon their knowledge and skills every day.

♦ Regular attendance helps students to develop confidence in areas such as social skills, organisation and teamwork.

♦ Children who miss out on the basic skills may experience difficulties later on due to gaps in their learning.

School helps your child learn: Children who attend school every day have better:

There is no safe number of days for missing school – each day a student misses puts them behind and affects their educational
