Dear Parents and the Community of Meadow Heights The 9 th of March 2017 was a sad day for the Meadow Heights Primary School Community with the passing of Joy ( Burness) Smithers . Joy was an important part of our schools story and although it is sad that she will not be with us to celebrate our 25 years as a school, she would have expressed great pride in the school she helped to create. As a former parent, School Council President and an Integration Aide, Joy always advocated for the students, the families and the Staff. In recognition of Joys contribution to MHPS, the School Hall was named in her honour. The school will always have lasting memories of Joy those kindness and commitment will not be forgotten. Margaret Leach - Principal A Tribute to Joy Burness/Smithers. It is with a heavy heart that I inform the school community of the passing of JOY SMITHERS or as we knew JOY BURNESS. Joy was the first School Council President when the school opened 25 years ago. Long before that, however, she was instrumental in making sure that there was a school for the growing new suburb of Meadow Heights. Her commitment to the community and in particular to Meadow Heights Primary School was first class. The school and it's students came first and she made sure that whatever was needed was available. What we have at the school today to help the students achieve their potential, Joy made sure that we got it from day one. From the right number of portable classrooms to the speech pathologist she made sure they were in place as the need arose. Joy was also an integral part of the Meadow Heights community. She served on a number of committees and I was privileged to have served with her. As an integration aide in later years at the school she made sure that children with special needs were looked after and allowed to achieve their maximum potential. I will always remember and cherish the memories as will many who have been touched by her kindness. Rest In Peace JOY BURNESS SMITHERS thank you for everything. Hello my name is Beyza and my name is Zehra and we are grade 6 students in 5\6 D. We will be the 2017 environment journalists. We will be keeping you posted with all the information going in our MHPS gardens. There will be no more Waste Wise Wednesday, but instead there will be Trash Free Tuesdays (TFT), no rubbish will be taken outside, there will be monthly rewards for the best trash free class, they will get a certificate and the garden gnome for a whole month. Also weekly the class that has the least rubbish per grade level will get 50 house points for each house. On TFT no rubbish is allowed, however if you bring rubbish to school we expect you to take it home. Please bring NUDE FOOD to school. Nude food is any particular food put in containers with no wrappers or any type of rubbish. How-ever we will be checking your bins as well as your recycling bins. We will be starting next Week, in Week 9. Have fun! You may have noticed that two portable classes have been taken away and the area left over will be turned into a kitchen garden. We are also in the process of making the Community Garden, next to the Hub, in working order. So on Friday, 24th of March (this week), we will be having another working bee at 3:30. If you would like to join us just ask the office ladies or Mr Ivan. Also don’t forget to tell your parents about tiqbiz! ….and don’t forget to reduce, reuse and recycle Beyza & Zehra
