University Museums https://www.youtube.com/user/ISUMuseums Thur, May 21: Grant Wood Murals in Parks Library, with Lynette Pohlman, Director In 1934, then Iowa State President Raymond M. Hughes commissioned Grant Wood, head of the Iowa Public Works of Art Project (PWAP) to design the mural cycle When Till-age Begins, Other Arts will Follow, the first of its kind in Iowa. Wood completed a second mural cycle Breaking the Prairie Sod a few years later. Take a closer look at these signif-icant works of art, located in Iowa State's Parks Library, and learn more about their his-tory and production.

Exercise Classes on Website There are now exercise videos for you to use in the privacy of your own living room on the Northcrest website, in the Resident section. These are the same ones that are utilized by the 8:30 am group. No ex-cuse now to not keep stretching!!

Another Bird Report Another bird report from Helen McRoberts. “The orioles (male & female), the rose-breasted grosbeak (males & females) have been feeding for at least a week, but today [Monday] they are abundant. Also see a gray catbird.. It is so entertaining & lifts my spirits.” If you’d like to report a “sighting”, send it to Ronnie.

Tedesco Learning Corridor Park There is a very nice article in the newest Parks & Recreation publication on the new-est park in Ames. Check out Pg. 26 at the front sitting area, but leave for others’ to see!

Northcrest Virtual Talent Show If you sing, play an instrument, tell jokes, read poetry or have other hidden talents, contact Ronnie. We would like to video tape individuals and put together a Virtual Talent Show for our website.

AND, Senior Variety Show, also? If you liked the idea above, consider letting the team at the Senior Variety Show use this material for our 2020 Virtual Show. We will not have the usual August performance in the Ames City Auditorium, but plan to have a web version. Help us show the vitality and spirit of seniors through music and laughter! The theme is open, though the 3 minute limit still applies. The “Antics Roadshow” theme will be reserved for 2021.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Make a Loud Noise! The Locust Hill folks enjoyed the “Make a Noise Wednesday” so much, that they re-port still getting together at 1:30 for fun! They do it again during the Friday parades!

Friday Car Parade Two parades left at Northcrest until July 4! Join your car in a parade through North-crest on Fridays at 3:00 pm. Add a sign, balloons, or just wave to all residents who would like to come out to the street to wave back. Form in the NC Court at 2:50 pm, May 22. This week is the start of Memorial Weekend, so it is appropriate to have the Ames and Story City Legion Riders to join the local HOG Chapter to ride their motorcycles in our parade! As always, this is weather dependent—think sunny thoughts!

Self–Isolation Reminder As medical appointments are being re-sumed, we need to clarify Northcrest’s posi-tion on self-isolation. Regular appointments to a doctor’s or dentist’s office do not re-quire special care. A visit to Urgent Care, the Emergency Room or out of state does require you to self-isolate for 14 days. This means remaining in your apartment or town house without interacting with another per-son. Please notify the Receptionist if this is the case, so Maintenance and Housekeep-ing can be alerted. They could unknowingly enter your apartment to work. Thank You!!

Grocery Shopping Change It is time to re-evaluate the practices we instituted in March for grocery shopping. Many residents are utilizing on-line shop-ping; we applaud and thank you! The trips done by staff have taken great amounts of time in the physical shopping and bookwork that followed. Starting June 1, we will re-turn to the Personal Shopping plan with a $9.90 fee per trip. Remember, Ronnie or Stacey are happy to aid you in setting up an online account for Hy-Vee or WalMart with delivery to the Front Door.

Hallway Art It is a Quarantine Challenge offered from the Getty Museum—and Northcrest chal-lenges YOU to pick a piece of well known art, and see how close you can mimic it. See the insert for some great examples of creative Northcresters!

Family Night at Northcrest. Family night is a time when Northcresters join together on the first Sunday of the month, September to May, to enjoy a pro-gram planned by the Family Night Commit-tee. We welcome suggestions, and also new members to the Family Night Commit-tee. It’s a good way to share interests and get acquainted. If you have program sug-gestions or would like to be on the planning committee, please email Jan Beran at [email protected].

Landscape Committee Garden Map The Northcrest Landscape committee urg-es you to take a campus walk to view the peonies and iris that will be blooming next week, particularly along with East Garages (6) Garden and in the ‘interior’ Founders Garden (4). Then follow the sidewalk along the garages and see the great variety of plantings along the Secret Garden (2). Use the map in the Northcrest News or pick up a ‘hard copy’ to carry with at the Front Desk or at the entrance table in the new Building N. In ten days the wisteria will be blooming on the Pergola, take your lunch and tickle your senses with the sound of the waterfall, the perfume and beauty of the blooming flowers.

Safety Reminder As the weather gets warmer, patio doors will be open to let in the fresh spring air. Please remember to fully close and lock the glass door when you leave your apartment or the building. Thank you for keeping our buildings safe and secure!
