Hey guys!!! Even though we are in differenttimes right now, it does not mean thateverything has to stop. We as a club aregetting the inside of the building updated. This will benefit everyone to have a freshlook on the place.
On a lighter note, I really have nothing to say other thanthe fact that all we do is cook and eat now. I have aGREAT coffee cake recipe:

COMMODORE - Sheri Johnson
Who would have thought we’d all be in thissituation. And since all we can do is make thebest of it, Howard Wendt, as Building andGrounds Director, has taken that to heart andstepped up to the plate. His Air Forceorganizational skills have been put to gooduse inside your South Venice Yacht Club. Heand his stalwart volunteers (if you’re not yet one of them, text or call him at 239-233-0706 and offer your expertise, whatever it may be). Really. There’s major work going oninside the Club. Check out his piece and the pictures Suehas put into this Yacht Yarn.
Speaking of which, Sue Rogers has clearly given the YachtYarn a fresh, lively look. What a pleasure to read! Thankyou, thank you, thank you, Sue.
Your Board met in April and will do so again in May tomake sure all runs smoothly while the world is out ofcommission. The assumption is that dancing will start upon schedule the fourth Saturday in September. I think that ifthings get better faster, perhaps your Club can schedule acouple of celebratory summer events. Maybe a picnic, orsomething.
To those “winter Floridians” who are still here – welcometo almost summer in Florida! As for those of us who livehere year round – we miss you when you’re gone and it’snice to still see you, except for the pesky circumstancesthat are keeping you in place.
TJ’s journey in the world of post-stroke recovery iscontinuing. I’ve included a few pictures so you can see hisskinny self! He lost 24 pounds, at least, and I’m workinghard to put a bunch of those back on him. Not an easy job.He is really pretty good with his walker, and is using aHurrycane as well. Getting in and out of the car and the
truck is easier every day, so we are somewhat mobile. His speech and his brain and his memory and reading areall intact, which is such a blessing. He has no paralysiseither. In addition to the tiny amount of Physical TherapyMedicare is allowing, we’ve hired Sue Hennessey, a Clubmember and Personal Trainer to train him 3 times aweek. Strength is paramount, and he doesn’t have nearlyenough yet. And he wants it (no surprise there)! He fullyintends to be behind the bar in September. Our good daysfar outnumber our bad moments. And there are a few ofthose… My respect for caregivers has gone through theroof, as has my frustration with handicapped parking. But, that’s a rant for another time.
Thank you all for your cards and thoughts and prayersand well wishes and dinners and visits and that poster! The poster is in the bedroom, and he reads it every day.You are all a critical part of his recovery. Thank you. Andthank you all for listening to and supporting me as he andI take this unexpected journey. Here’s one thing I’velearned. Drink the good stuff. And what are you waitingfor? As TJ says, festina lente, my friends (make hasteslowly). See you soon.

The Wednesday paddles werecanceled, so we have no groupadventures to report. I miss our roadtrips to the launch sites almost morethan the adventure paddles. The groupprovided a weekly review ofrestaurants, movies and local events. The Paddle Crew has developed some great friendshipsand opportunities to share other interests, includinggarden clubs, theater, concerts and even starting a band.
During this pandemic our club property was the naturalplace for members wanting fresh air and exercise whilepracticing social distancing. Our private and safe launch issuch a great benefit while all the public launches andbeaches were closed.
I would like to thank Sue Rogers for working hard updatingclub information and communications. I'm looking forwardto seeing the new kayaking information on our website. Itwill hopefully drive online traffic to our website andperhaps some new members.
FLEET CAPTAIN - Connie Anderson
BUILDINGS & GROUNDS - Howard Wendt
It’s been a busy month at the Yacht Club.We have removed and resealed the windowsaround the Club and have now started onthe remodel work for the Club interior. Wehave been stripping the lower wall paperand doing prep work on the rest of the wallsfor painting. We have some great new colorsthat we are painting the interior and look forward to wheneveryone can come back and see the “new look” for theClub. Don’t forget to contact me at 230-233-0706 if youcan volunteer to help. We will need additional help thissummer as the “snow birds” fly home.
Howard Wendt and his volunteers aredoing a lot of work inside and outside theclubhouse, as well as taking care of somelong-neglected issues. See Howard’ssection for an update.
