In Norway, Corbion, the global market leader in algae-based food

ingredients and BioMar, the leading innovator in sustainable aquaculture

feeds, announced that over 350,000 tons of fish feed with AlgaPrime™

DHA—an algae-based source of long-chain omega 3s— has been

delivered to Norwegian salmon farmers since 2016.

A similar case, the Norwegian salmon producer Lingalaks is replacing

fish oil in ties production with omega-3 EPA+ DHA fatty acids from

natural marine algae from Veramaris, a Dutch-based joint venture of

DSM and Evonik, for increased sustainability and product differentiation.

Beginning in October 2018, Lingalaks has been feeding 50% of their

salmon production a diet produce by Skretting which includes omega-3

EPA+DHA algal oil produced by Veramaris.

SDG Accelerator program

The SDG Accelerator is a United Nations Development Program (UNDP)

program aiming to accelerate business solutions with the Sustainable

Development Goals (SDGs). The program is funded by the Danish

Industry Foundation and is being tested in Denmark in 2018

and 2019 with 30 Danish small and medium-sized industrial

companies. The participating companies will receive guidance

and a comprehensive method to develop new products, services

or business models that address the challenges embedded in

the SDGs. In addition, companies will be assisted in engaging

their employees in their work with the SDGs through internal

campaigns and activities.

Aller Aqua was one of the 2018 participants. The company has

been working to develop an educational app to help Nigerian

fish farmers to improve their breeding efficiency to increase

sustainability, food security and growth.

New investments under ASF threat

As Rabobank said, China could see the demise of up to 200 million

pigs due to culling or deaths related to the ongoing African swine

fever outbreak in the country.

CPF announced on April 22 to acquire Canadian pork producer

Hylife for US$372 million. The acquisition would make CPF a

50.1% owner of HyLife, with the remainder held by its Japanese

partner, Itochu Corp. Hylife is involving in feed production, swine

production and distribution of pork products in Canada and

Mexico. CPF said the investment would give it access to a pork

production base and opportunity to expand in North America and

premium markets such as Japan. It will also improve its product

portfolio of cooked pork products for the Chinese Market.

Another investor is New Hope Group from China. The company

said it is building three swine farms in Vietnam, even as ASF

spreads through the country. With an investment more than

US$163.51 million, the farms are located in Thanh Hoa, Binh Phuoc,

and Binh Dinh Provinces, and will produce 930,000 heads annually.

Construction is expected to be completed by 2021.

More investment in AgriFood Startups

Agrifood tech is the small but growing segment of the startup and

venture capital universe that’s aiming to improve or disrupt the

global food and agriculture industry. According to the AgFunder

AgriFood Tech Investing Report-2018, AgriFood Tech startups,

those innovating all the way from farm-to-fork, raised $ 16.9 billion

in 2018. This is a 43% year-over-year increase. The upstream-from

the farm before the retailer-accelerated at its fastest pace on a

record 44% in 2018, while the downstream, including In-store

Restaurant & Retail, Online Restaurants, eGrocery, Restaurant

Marketplaces and Home & Cooking, grew at a rate of 43% with

restaurant Marketplaces bringing in the most funding due to

consumer demand for convenience and increased choice.

Insect meal: Entobel builds Commercial-

scale factory in Vietnam

Insect meal has become a new alternative

to fishmeal, especially after its European

authorization. Vietnam-based alternative

aquafeed firm Entobel and its Belgian co-

founder Gaetan Crielaard announced on

March that it had completed the setup of

its first commercial factory in Vietnam with

an expected capacity of 1,000 tons H-Meal/

year and 5,000 tons H-Ferti/year. The

semi-automated factory will be ISO22000

and GMP certified. The first commercial

batches will be available by mid-2019 and

full capacity will be reached by the end

of the year. The company now has raised

€1 million in funding, and is planning

to expand its operations with a 10,000t

H-Meal plant in Vietnam next year. It is also

planning expansion wider within Southeast

Asia and Latin America.

Algae-based ingredients for aquafeed

production in Norway

One of the main challenges that

aquaculture faces nowadays is the design

of sustainable and environmentally friendly

feed. The substitution of fishmeal and fish

oils by algae is one of the most promising

options, not only for its protein content,

Agriculture still least digitized by compared to other major industries, and the

need for agrifood tech innovation is greater than ever. Funding for Farm Robotics,

Mechanization and Equipment startups jumped 56% as an increasing number of

entrepreneurs turned their attention to automation processes on the farm.

There’s a funding race occurring in the insect farming space. After AgriProtein, a

startup raises black soldier flies for livestock feed, raised a $ 105m equity and debt

round in the largest insect farming deal on record at the time, French mealworm

farmer Ynsect raised $ 125m at Series C breaking the record. InnovaFeed and

Entomo Farm are 2 more insect farms in the top 20 Novel Farming Systems Deals.

Most deals were in India and China, with 11 deals over $ 200m. China became the

second largest investing country only after the US with $ 3.5bn invested across 184

deals. New countries entering the agrifood tech investment space for the first time

were Albania, Romania, Serbia and Zambia.

Aquaculture will surpass wild-catch seafood by next year

According to Rabobank's report “World Seafood Map 2019: Value Growth in the

Global Seafood Trade Continues” that released on April, seafood trade has grown

by a CAGR of 4% from 2012 to 2017 to reach an estimated USD 153bn. Aquaculture

production is expected to exceed 90,000 metric tons and will surpass the volumes

from wild-catch seafood in 2020, with driving factors of improved genetics, new

husbandry technologies, innovations in aquafeed, and the switch to more efficient

and intensive farming technologies.

Crustaceans and salmon are the drivers of trade value growth. Key importer of

crustaceans are the US, the EU and China, and key exporters are India, Indonesia,

Vietnam, Mexico, and Ecuador. Fishmeal and fish oil trade increased both in value

and volume with China remaining the largest consumer and Peru the main supplier.

China could overtake Japan and ascend to the Top 3 importer after the EU and the

US sometime soon, due to the demand growth for imported seafood driven by the

ASF situation in China's pork production and increasing food safety concerns over

local production.

$16bn invested in US plant-based protein market since 2009

Plant-based protein alternative companies have attracted $16 billion in investment

during the last 10 years in the US, including venture capital funding and acquisitions.

In 2017 and 2018 alone, some $13 billion was invested in the category, according to

new reports from The Good Food Institute. The number of plant-based deals saw a

39% increase to 46 during 2018 compared to 2017.

One explanation for the increasing investor interest could be the uptick in retail

sales of plant-based meat, which grew 23% between 2017 and 2018 and exceeded

$760 million. Mainstream restaurants start to add plant-based burgers to their

menus. Among the three plant-based protein products: meat, eggs and diary, the

largest and most developed category is plant-based milk,

which accounts for $1.8 billion in sales and represents 13% of

the total US retail milk market. Plant-based meat has captured

1% of meat market to date. If reaches market share parity with

plant-based milk, plant-based meat market could be worth

more than $10 billion. Most active investors include General

Mills, Maple Leaf Foods, Danone, Tyson Foods, ect.

Cell-cultured meat expects to scale up production in 2021

Three US cell-based meat companies, Memphis Meats, CUBIQ

Foods, and Mosa Meat have all announced that they expect to

start selling products in 2021, according to the US State of the

Industry Report—Cell-based Meat released by the Good Food

Institute in May 2019.

Cell-based meat (often referred to as clean meat or cultured

meat) is genuine animal meat that is grown from cells outside

of an animal. The cell-based process starts with a small sample

of animal tissue and places it in a nutrient-rich environment

that allows it to grow, similar to vegetables grow with a small

cutting of a parent plant. Cell-based meat is said to be able to

create high-quality cuts of meat using fewer resource and with

less environmental impact.

Compared to conventional beef, cell-based beef is estimated to

reduce land use by more than 95%, climate change emissions

by 74% to 87%, and nutrient pollution by 94%. Since cell-

based meat is grown in a clean facility, it also reduces the risk

of contamination by harmful pathogens and eliminates the

need for antibiotics, thereby reducing the serious public health

threats posed by foodborne illness and antibiotic resistance. In

2018, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the U.S.

Food & Drug Administration (FDA) agreed to a joint regulatory

framework, providing cell-based meat with a much clearer path

to market in the United States.

At the end of 2018, a total of $73 million in capital

had been invested since the cell-based emerged as

a commercial industry in 2015. In 2018, 11 new cell-

based meat companies were founded, bringing the total

number of companies to publicly announce themselves

to 27. There are funded cell-based meat companies in

five countries: the United States (8 companies), Israel (3

companies), The Netherlands (2 companies), Spain (1

company), and Japan (1 company). Several companies

that have not yet (or not publicly) raised external funding

have been announced in other countries: Canada, China,

France, India, Singapore, Turkey, and the U.K.

Poultry is the most common focus area, followed by beef

and seafood. According to the report, cell-based meat

companies also form partnerships with the conventional

meat industry. Tyson Ventures, the VC arm of Tyson Foods,

has invested in two cell-based meat companies, Memphis

Meats and Future Meat Technologies. Cargill, the largest

private U.S. company and leading meat producer, has

invested in Memphis Meats, and PHW Group, one of

Europe’s largest poultry producers, has invested in

SuperMeat.

place on February 28 in FAMSUN's manufacturing base in the northwestern economic

zone of the Gulf and Suez, Egypt.

CNCEC16 is a China central state-controlled enterprise engaged in large comprehensive

construction and installation for petrochemical engineering project.

The company obtains many local and international Qualifications and Licenses on

project installation, civil construction, environmental protection, General Construction

Contracting, etc. It has undertaken such large-scale projects as the Suez Phosphate

Fertilizer Plant, the Aswan Photovoltaic Power Station, and the Yeast Extraction Production Line in Beni Sweif for Egypt since 2016.

The 2019 International Production & Processing

Expo (IPPE) had a terrific year with 32,931 attendees

and 1,426 exhibitors from 133 countries. It is the

world's largest annual feed, meat, and poultry

industry event of its kind. Most of the foreign

visitors came from the Caribbean, Latin America,

Mexico and South America.

When 3D printing technique meet with feed

machinery, it brings more pleasure user experience.

Innovation always continues

The 2019 edition of VIV Asia, held March 13-15 in

Bangkok, attracted more than 45,000 professional

visits, with a 7% increase in visitors from outside the

host country Thailand. Different from the previous

editions, the number one international trade show

from feed to food in Asia included food engineering

as an extra element in this year.

FAMSUN had a large presence at this years' VIV

Asia show. In the spotlight were FAMSUN H156

Extruder and K50 Gear-Drive Pellet Mill that specially

developed for large-scale feed production. With many

new technologies and optimizations, the innovative

products can improve production performance and

save cost largely. The debut of 3D printed equipment

models in Asian also attracted FAMSUN booth a lots of

visitors.

Besides the innovative products, a strong line-up

of highly specialized technical support teams from

FAMSUN and its partner HUALI—a company involving

in animal farming and food processing solutions—

had shown their expertise and abilities in providing

integrated solutions and services to customers from

farm-to-table supply chain. FAMSUN was pleased to

see many old friends from global and local companies

such as CP, Cargill and ADM at its booth. It also enjoyed

growing new relationships during the show.

As part of its strategy, FAMSUN aims to grow its

presence in the region and help producers to get far

more value and benefits from its integrated solutions

from all its business lines, i.e. feed milling, animal

farming, petfood engineering, grain storage system,

and oilseed processing.

Bio-security solutions to protect animal health

The annual China Feed Expo 2019 with the theme "Win-Win and Sustainability", jointly organized by the China Feed Industry

Association and the National Animal Husbandry Service, was held at Nanning International Convention and Exhibition Center

from April 18 to 20. The show gathered all new products, technologies and solutions and demand trends of the feed and animal

husbandry industry in China. It attracted about more than 1,000 exhibitors and over 60,000 professional visitors from local and

overseas.

As the largest feed machinery supplier in China, FAMSUN has grown a solid relationship with the industry and contributes a lot to

the development of new feed manufacturing technologies and equipment.

This year, it launched its latest product H176 Twin-Screw Extruder at the event. The new product is highlighted by high capacity,

excellent running performance, zero startup waste, click-to start/stop production, online control of SME to improve product quality,

etc. In addition, the PTZL5000 Vacuum Coater, K20 Gear-Drive Pellet Mill and the zero-waste quick-start conditioner as well as the

new retentioner for ASFv inactivation showed FAMSUN's strengths in aquafeed and animal feed manufacturing solutions.

Forewarned is forearmed. Since the first outbreaks of ASF detected in China in August 2018, FAMSUN has invested a lot R&D efforts

in the development of solutions to prevent and control ASFv so as to protect the health of animals in customers' farms. The safety

feed production solution includes the raw material disinfection drying tower, the new stabilizer and especially the ETC retentioner,

which has greatly satisfied expectations. FAMSUN's partner HUALI also share bio-security solutions for animal disease prevention

and risk control as well as inspirational best practices with customer at this show.(

FAMSUN's New Aquafeed Processing Solutions:

For Future-Fit Feed

As it seeks to meet the needs of the anticipated nine billion people occupying planet earth, the global Aquaculture Industry continues

its rapid rate of growth, currently estimated at 6% annually. However, this growth does not come without its opportunities and

challenges. To keep up with demand, more fish meal or plant-based protein substitutes, such as soybean meal, rapeseed meal, pea

protein, and corn gluten meal, will also be required to support our modern aquafeed recipes.

This challenge will likely add pressure to both the marine and terrestrial production systems, especially for the later when resource

demands shift from the oceans to land. Currently, the land-based food production systems are already under pressure to meet global

demand for food, feed, biofuels, and bio-based materials.

Therefore, solutions that might balance the marine and the terrestrial resources to feed the world sustainably will be the "future-fit"

solutions. Strategically, future-fit solutions might include the processing of novel ingredients, such as microbial biomass, algae, insect

meals, copepods, and technologies that reduce natural resource inputs (e.g., raw material, water, and energy) in feed production and

feed utilization.

FAMSUN always collaborates with customers to develop and innovate aquafeed processing solutions. Recently, a package of innovative

solutions was released for the production of future-fit aquaculture feed, including the SMTZ bulk density controller for flexible

extrusion production, the zero-waste quick-start conditioner, and the best applications of FUMSUN's aquafeed extruders on producing

high performance hatchery feed, shrimp feed, and other specific feeds for new demands.

SMTZ bulk density controller, a flexible add-on

Aquafeed producers might be facing the same challenges as Chinese aquafeed giant Tongwei. When Tongwei intended to develop

low-starch low-cost feed for freshwater crab and crayfish, they learned that their initial feed products were of poor water stability,

varied in size and color, and the production capacity was below their expectations. Therefore, Tongwei turned to its technical partner,

FAMSUN, for solutions.

The SMTZ controller is designed to optimize the bulk density of extruded sinking feed products. It includes two major components: a

cutting chamber and an airlock. See Fig.1 and Fig.2. The hanging cutting chamber attaches to the end of the extruder barrel allowing

the die to protrude into the chamber cavity. The airlock swings in and out of the production position, as needed, via an attached

articulating arm. The two components are then connected to create an air tight pressure chamber.

When in operation, the airlock is moved to connect with the upper part through a

clamping hoop. The vertical cylinder in the airlock moves up to close the airlock and

creates an enclosed cutting chamber with the assistant of a good seal. Air pressure

in the cutting chamber is adjusted through two ball valves on the cutting device.

The intelligent design brings the innovative bulk density controller following

advantages: user-friendly operation, easy assembly and disassembly, quick pressure

creation, and high power transmission efficiency thanks to the compact structure

and the direct-drive motor.

The SMTZ bulk density controller is proven to be a flexible add-on that can simplify

extrusion production and solve complex production problems. In Tongwei's

aquafeed mill, FAMSUN's SJPS150×2 Twin-Screw Extruder was upgraded with this

add-on and had many of their issues addressed. When processing the same new

formula (low-starch), both the production performance and the product quality

were dramatically improved, see Table 1.

The SMTZ bulk density controller addresses production challenges more easily with the following improvements:

Improved production capacity. The production capacity of sinking feed for freshwater crab or crayfish with the same formula was

enhanced by 30%.

Reduced moisture content of extruded pellets. As compared to the vacuum density controller, the pressure chamber can process feeds

at lower moistures. The lower moisture reduces the energy needed to remove the water from the pellets during the drying process.

Controllable product bulk density. By adjusting the flow of compressed air using the ball valves on the cutting chamber, the bulk density

of feed pellets can be appropriately controlled. See Table 2

Capable of producing both sinking and floating aquafeed with the same screw configuration. By comparing to the extrusion system with

a vacuum bulk density controller, the new system with an SMTZ controller can produce both sinking and floating aquafeed without changing

the screw configuration and only needs to adjust the pressure of cutting chamber.

Pellet products of improved water stability. See Fig.4, Fig.5 and Table 3, the pellets produced by the extrusion system with an SMTZ

controller are of better water stability as compared to operating without a bulk density controller. The feed pellets can remain whole for a

longer time (more than 240min) in water. That means better feed intake of aquatic animals and more sustainable aquaculture environment.

Either for fresh crab feed, crayfish feed or feeds with new requirements, the SMTZ bulk density controller is proven to be a flexible add-on

for extrusion production. It can enhance customer's competitiveness with improved production capacity, desired bulk density, high starch

gelatinization levels, satisfying water stability, better appearance, as well as low energy consumption. It is an accelerator for quality, efficient,

and excellent for sustainable feed production.

Quick-start conditioner for zero-waste production

In compound feed production hundreds of kilos of raw material waste are generated due to a slow rise in feed temperature during each start-

up of the conventional pre-conditioner. This waste is usually discharged from a by-pass instead of entering into the pellet mill. A sad truth,

As shown in Fig.6, the new conditioner is composed of

the upper pre-conditioning pass and the lower retention

pass. With controllable conditioning time and the multi-

point temperature monitoring system, all feed mash in the

conditioner can be cooked thoroughly before entering

into the pellet mill. Also, the heated jacket, as an optional

add-on for preheating and heat preservation, can raise the

temperature of feed mash to above 70℃ within 30mins after

start-up. The quick-start conditioner helps eliminate waste

and is proven to be a great saver of time and energy.

Practical applications in aquafeed production

Customers can test their new formulas and optimize production solutions with the support of FAMSUN technologies and experts in its

60,000 square meters feed testing center in Yangzhou, or at customers' sites through the "Collaborative Innovation" Program. More and

more aquafeed producers have converted their innovations into industrial products that meet new market demands with the support of

FAMSUN. Following are some successful applications.

Refurbishing old machines for new applications

Another service FAMSUN provides is the so-called "Refurbishing old production lines for new applications". Instead of replacing

production lines or machines with new ones to meet the requirements of their growth strategies or new market positioning, users of

FAMSUN feed processing solutions can continue their success story only by taking necessary adjustments in their plants. For example,

one of FAMSUN's customers was planning to explore the high-end floating feed market for some specific species on their existing

extrusion lines that invested about ten years ago. FAMSUN helped them achieve their goals by upgrading some configurations on

the existing system and conducting tests to find out the best processing operations. The "refurbishing" also helped to improve the

production capacity of the existing extrusion line from 5~5.5t/h to 6.5~7.5 t/h.

Modernization, digital management, and energy reducing solutions are also included in this ongoing support, which aims to help users

develop sustainable business and maintain their competitiveness in a long time.

The large investment of Dindings Soya & Multifeeds Sdn Bhdin in Lumut, Perak, Malaysia starts generating

returns since feed production on its five advanced aquafeed processing lines had become normal in early

2019. The first phase installation only took a period of less than six months with FAMSUN's Flawless Project

Delivery (FPD) solutions.

Dindings Soya & Multifeeds Sdn Bhd (DSM) operates under the management of Malayan Flour Mills(MFM)—

Target a leading position in aquafeed market

The new facility, as the largest-ever investment of DSM, is designed to accommodate seven aquafeed

processing lines. Among which, the installation of three extrusion lines and two shrimp feed pelleting lines

had completed early this year in the first phase, while the other two extrusion lines are reserved for further

expansion. The new feed mill is expected to boost DSM's aquafeed capacity by 72,000 tones a year in its first

phase of operation. A second-phase expansion will raise the plant's total capacity to 120,000 tones a year.

Supporting by FAMSUN's mature aquafeed processing technologies and latest innovations such as the

well applicable twin-screw extrusion technology, the high-efficient MJ series dryers, the leading-edge WEM

control system etc., the new feed mill is able to produce High Quality and Consistent aquafeed complying

The expansion project of Dongting HAID Feed Co. start production in 2018. It was designed and

built in collaboration with feed processing technology partner FAMSUN. The capacity of its first

phase (production on stream in early 2015 ) is 200,000 tons, of which 150,000 tons is aquafeed

and 50,000 tons is animal feed. With the expansion investment, the production capacity of the

company moves to 350,000 tons.

The 75 percent extra production capacity, i.e. 150,000 tons of feed, comes from three production

lines, two for high-end floating aquafeed and one for powdery biological feed. The extrusion

Safe and clean Feed:ASFv Can Be Inactivated by Effective Heat Treatment Equipment

African swine fever virus (ASFv) is currently spreading across China with no signs of stopping. This disaster has caused billions in

financial losses and has severely strangled market confidence. Transmission of the disease is thought to be primarily caused by

wild hogs, feed and live animal transportation systems, all due to the lack of adequate biosecurity systems. However, some feed

ingredients have also tested positive for ASFv, indicating that feed mills must take measures to keep their feed "clean" and safe.

Recent research shows that ASFv in feed can be inactivated by effective heat treatments. So what are the inactivate conditions?

What kind of machines can help to create such conditions in practical production? And how? You'll surely want to know the

answers.

ASFv can be inactivated

Dr. Sandra Blome has more than 15 years of experience working with transboundary viruses under high containment conditions,

including animal experiments and studies. She is responsible for the Germany National Reference Laboratories for African and

classical swine fever.

Her research focuses on the pathogenesis of viral infectious diseases with particular emphasis on virus-host interaction and

diagnostics/vaccine development. She was part of different projects focusing on African swine fever e.g., ASFORCE (FP7), ASF

STOP, and leads the FLI-internal research network on ASF. When speaking about her team's latest findings, she stated that ASFv

could be inactivated.

Q: So can ASFv in feed been inactivated if kept in an environment of 85℃ for three minutes?

Dr. Sandra Blome: 10 minutes can definitely inactivate it. I've verified it thru experiments. And I believe 5 minutes can also

inactivate it, but what we call a temperature of 85℃ for 5 minutes, means the temperature that the virus is in contact with,

must last for five to ten minutes. So, we should consider the question of how to make sure that all raw ingredients in feed be

thoroughly heated to and kept at 85 ℃ for 5 to 10 minutes. And we could go into that a little bit more. When talking about

ASFv heat inactivation, we mean the combination of both temperature and time. ASFv is sensitive to heat, and the higher the

temperature, the shorter the time needed for inactivation. Our team is also trying to find such a combination, that the time does

not need too long and the temperature does not have to be high, but ASFv can be effectively inactivated. We expect to give out a

satisfactory answer before next year.

ASFv heat inactivation conditions

1. Van't Hoff Rule: the velocity of chemical reactions is increased by 2~4 times for each rise of 10 ℃ in temperature.

K (T + 10 K)/K (T) = 2 ~ 4

2. Authoritative data: ASFv can be inactivated under 60 ℃ for 20 min.

Time = 20 x (1/2) ^ ((Tem - 60) / 10)

Other temperature and time combinations for ASFv heat inactivation:

70 ℃ for 10 minutes;

80 ℃ for 5 minutes;

85 ℃ for 3.6 minutes;

and 90 ℃ for 2.5 minutes.

By Ye Zhen An assumption about ASFv inactivation in practical feed productions, not in the labs

It is the responsibility of technology suppliers to provide practical solutions to solve technical production problems. In China, ASF

is currently the most pressing technical issue. To convert scientific knowledge and the latest laboratory findings into operational,

practical and problem-solving applications, FAMSUN's dedicated R&D team have put a hypothesis forward: To inactivate ASFv by

keeping feed in an environment of 85℃ for 5 minutes on processing lines.

Based on Van't Hoff Rule and Dr. Sandra Blome's latest research results, the assumption is made up by two essential conditions:

Condition A-To make sure feed (powdery or pellet), not partially but all of them, is thoroughly heated to above 85℃;

Condition B- Based on Condition A, all feed should be kept in an environment of a stable temperature that above 85℃ for more than

5 minutes.

FAMSUN's ASFv inactivation assumption is implemented on its innovative conditioning system before pelleting and its new post-

conditioning stabilizer. Conditioner and stabilizer are the two most common heat treatment machines that included in feed

processing lines. See Fig.1.

One of the ASFv heat inactivation solutions that FAMSUN offers is the innovative conditioning system, which is made up of a quick-

start conditioner and an ETC retentioner (see Fig.1). The upper-pass quick-start conditioner, featured by high rotating speed and

special rotor with a unique paddle structure, can create high conditioning temperature and long retention time. Because of no

startup waste, the production operations are very simple. The lower-pass ETC retentioner is large in diameter and has a uniform

discharger at the shaft end (see Fig.2).

Since different conditioners serving different functions, the innovative conditioning system is of following highlights:

Functional passes. The upper pass can heat feed mash to the desired temperature, while the lower pass can keep them in such

a temperature as long as ASFv inactivation required.

No feed waste is generated at each startup of the conditioning system because feed is thoroughly cooked in the upper pass.

Equipped with the electric heating system, process operations such as pre-heating before startup, heat preservation during

production and drying after shutdown are as easy as a press of a button.

The uniform arrangement of discharging paddles at ETC shaft end contributes to stable pelleting production.

When the system is working, feed mash is cooked to the desired temperature in the upper-pass, and then kept in the lower-pass for

a period of time long enough to inactivate ASFv, and finally discharged into the pellet mill. The most significant advantage of this

combination is that all feed, even the startup feed, can be cooked thoroughly to a high temperature for a long time.

ETC retentioner and its temperature fields

With high-temperature steam, FAMSUN ETC retentioner can inactivate all viruses and bacteria in feed mash, including ASFv. Thanks

to the full-length heat preservation jacket, it can provide a constant environment that ensures ASFv in feed contact with high

temperature (> 85℃) steam thoroughly for a set time, with the assistant of a welded ribbon screw rotor.

Besides high disinfection performance, the ETC retentioner is also featured by its easy and safe operations. With gas springs to support

access doors and safety switches to prevent the motor from incident startup when doors are opening, manual operations such as

cleaning and maintenance can be carried out quickly and safely. Also, the bearing of split structure at shaft end allows for simple

lubrication and maintenance. The ETC retentioner is equipped with sensors to detect the temperature of feed mash in multiple

points to obtain high quality conditioned feed. And sensors are also installed to detectfeed filling levels at inlet and outlet to prevent

blockage in the cylinder.

Initial conditions: 1. ETC has been pre-heated for 7 minutes; 2. The temperature of conditioned feed mash into the ETC is 85℃.

Heating result: After heated in the ETC for 5 min, there is no noticeable temperature rising, and most conditioned feed mash in the ETC is still

kept in a temperature of 85℃, see Fig.5.

The temperature field is the set of temperature values at

all points in a given space at a given instant. A temperature

field is represented graphically using isothermal surfaces,

each of which connects all points of the filed having the

same temperature. It can show the thermal conductivity

of a machine visually and can be used to optimize the

application of such a machine. Following figures are the

temperature fields analysis of ETC retentioner in pre-heating,

heating and heat preservation working modes.

As shown in Fig.3, the lowest temperature point in ETC is

above 85℃ after pre-heating for 7 minutes, and it is close

to 100℃ after pre-heating for 30 minutes (see Fig.4 ). In a

word, when the ETC working in the pre-heating mode, the

temperature can be raised quickly in a short time.

Heat preservation result: Changing the working state of ETC to heat preservation mode with a set temperature of 85℃,and after heat

According to the above analysis, the ETC performs well in pre-heating and heat

preservation modes. Therefore, it is recommended to use its heat preservation function

once feed production has become normal so that the ETC can keep feed mash in a set

temperature stable with low energy consumption.

Post-conditioning stabilizer and its temperature fields

The stabilizer is another heat treatment equipment on a feed production line. It is possible

to develop the post-conditioning machine into an efficient ASFv heat inactivation

equipment after pelleting and before packing. FAMSUN has upgraded its stabilizer

according to new requirements, and the new one (See Fig.7) is endowed excellent heat

preservation performance. It can serve as the last defense of feed free of ASFv on the

production line.

With steam jackets from the top cover to bin body, as well as heating coils for discharge

hopper, the FAMSUN SWDB stabilizer can create an effective conditioning space that the

temperature is controllable with good pre-heating and heat preservation performance.

Other advantages of the new stabilizer include little residue and contamination-free due

to the smooth inner walls, uniform and first-in-first-out quality thanks to the adjustable

discharge openings of tipping plates, and broad access doors for easy cleaning and

maintenance.

Following are figures of the temperature field analysis of FAMSUN's new SWDB Stabilizer when it is working in pre-heating, heating,

40 min; 2. And feed pellets into the stabilizer are in a

temperature of 84℃.

Heating result: After heating for one hour, there is no

noticeable temperature rising of pellets in the stabilizer,

see Fig.9.

Initial conditions: 1. After pre-heating the stabilizer

for 40 min; 2. Feed pellets into the stabilizer are in a

temperature of 85℃; 3. The temperature of stabilizer

jacket is reduced to 85℃.

Heat preservation result: feed pellets still can be kept in a

temperature of 85℃ after heat preservation for one hour,

see Fig.10.

The above analysis and comparison indicates that the

SWDB stabilizer can keep feed pellets in a stable high

temperature environment in heat preservation mode,

which eventually ensures a finished product of consistent

quality.

Conclusion

ASFv can be inactivated not only in the labs but also

in practical feed productions if proper heat treatment

solutions are provided. Research on the heat conductivity

of FAMSUN’s new heat treatment equipment and the

analysis of their temperature fields provide an available

method for feed producers to produce safe, ASFv-free,

high-quality products.

China Feed Industry Amid Trade Tension and ASF:

8 Changes to Look Out for in 2019

The ongoing African Swine Fever has depressed China's feed consumption this year, especially pig feed. While

the escalating U.S.-China trade tension makes it worse because of soybean supply. However, challenges and

opportunities and are always in the mix. Facing such pressing issues, China feed industry is striving to make

changes to go forward. Here’s a look at some of them.

1. Soybean Revitalization Plan

To cope with the new domestic and international challenges, a "Soybean Revitalization Plan" Initiative was

announced by the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CCCPC) and the State Council

on February 19, 2019 in its No.1 Document—a significant policy document that provides guidelines on

agriculture and rural development for 2019 and 2020.

The U.S.-China trade tensions started last July has pushed China to make the decision to reduce its reliance

on key soybean exporters and "implement a soybean revitalization plan and increase soybean planting area

through multiple approaches" to become self-sufficiency.

The revitalization plan aims to expand soybean planting area to 140 million mu by 2020, and to 150 million

mu by 2022. It also aims to add about 10 million mu in 2019. The promotion of oilseed production will be

implemented by rotating soybeans with corn in Northeast China and to increase the share of soybean

production with the winter wheat in the Yellow and Huai River regions where double cropping is possible. The

production of rapeseed will also be boosted in the Yangtze River Basin.

Backing by high subsidies, as much as 400 Yuan and about 200 Yuan higher than that for corn farmers, 37.4%

of China's soybean planting target in 2019 has be achieved in spring planting in North China. The soybean

planting area has increased significantly, especially in Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region and Heilongjiang

Province.

According to that reported by China's Ministry of Agriculture in May, the soybean production in 2019/20

harvest year will reach 17.27 million metric tons and will break a 14 years' record since 2004/2005 with an

increase of 7.94% YOY.

2. Seeking new soybean sources abroad

Though the outbreaks of African swine fever in China have cured demand for soybeans in the form of animal

feed, China still need to consume more than 100 million metric tons of soybeans in 2019/20. That means

nearly 82 percent of them depends on import, and more than 34% of them that used to be USA soybean

before 2018.

Seeking new soybean sources abroad may be the most effective answer to the pressing question. China is now

considering to diversify its soybean import from Russia, Brazil, Argentina, Turkey and other Asian countries. In

the second and third quarter of this year, China will mainly import soybeans from South America countries.

3. Implementing new animal feed standards

As the world's largest livestock-farming and feed manufacturing country, China is heavily dependent on imports of feed raw material, especially

soybeans. In order to reduce the dependency, new standards about protein content in feed for pigs and chickens were approved by the China

Feed Industry Association on October 26, 2018. By lowering the protein levels in pig feed by 1.5% and those for chickens by 1%, the new

standards, if fully implemented, could reduce China's annual soybean meal consumption by 11 million tons, equal to 14 million tons of soybean.

Low-protein feed is feasible in theory. The reduced soybean meal content of low-protein feed can be make up by the addition of extra amino

acids, lysine, threonine, methionine and enzyme. The industry has seen some success stories in recent years. Some large-scale hog-farming

players have already adjusted the diets to low protein feed, which reduced the feed cost, creating strong cost advantages.

Other benefits of low-protein feed are the reduction of nitrogen emissions of animal farms, the improvement of pig health because of reduce

diarrhea, and the reduction of using antibiotics. Generally speaking, a reduction of 1% crude protein in feed can reduce nitrogen emissions by

8-10%.

but it will boost the research on new

formulas, the production of feed additive

and the innovation on feed processing

technologies as well.

4. Replacing soymeal with other available

plant proteins

Currently and technically, it is possible to

alternate 5-10% soybean meal with other

plant-based protein such as rapeseed meal,

cottonseed meal, peanut meal and rice

bran meal in feed. There were successful

application stories in poultry feed and pig

feed production during 2012-2015, a period

that soybean meal price stayed high in China.

The use of alternative proteins depends on

four conditions: lower cost than soymeal,

higher protein content than corn (protein

7%) , less deficiency factors and wider supply

source. As the fermentation technology

developed, DDGS (protein: 30%), rapeseed

(protein: 32%) and wheat (protein: 12%) are

welcomed by feed manufacturers, especially

the DDGS. It is reported that some whole-

wheat diets that produced by some of the

Chinese feed mills can save the consumption

of soymeal by 45% indirectly. By combining

the whole-wheat feed technology with

the low-protein feed technology, and with

proper addition of fermented cotton meal,

rapeseed meal, DDGS and corn protein in

the diet, more than 85% of soymeal could

be saved for animal farming conglomerates

who produce feed for their own farms.

They usually not care so much about the

color, appearance and protein content of

feed products, but balanced nutrition is the

priority.

5. Developing new alternative proteins

like insect meal

No matter what kind of land-based crop

protein substitution it could be, limited

farmland in China still the biggest challenge.

New proteins such as insect meal with less

land demand and algae-based ingredients

from water may be the most promising and

sustainable options for China feed industry

are also different applications of PLF technologies in fish farming and poultry farms. The

push for PLF has also been intensified by governments in different levels from national to

local in the forms of policy supports or accelerating programs.

7. Stricter bio-security measures, and technologies upgrade

According to the statistics of China's Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs in April, there

has already 1.02 million pigs been culled and the sow number has declined by more than

14% since last August when the first ASF outbreaks in China. The central government has

already paid 6300 million RMB for the killed pigs. "Chinese pork production losses are

expected to be 25-35% in 2019," Rabobank stated in one of its report. "and with a slight

recovery in 2020."

It is more like a disaster than a preventable epidemic disease, not only because no vaccine

but also because no effective bio-security measures. Aware of this, industry players are

implementing stricter bio-security from raw material procurement to feed manufacturing,

and from pig farming to meat production, in a bit to halt disease and rebuild a more health

pork supply chain.

Besides stricter management, feed millers also introduce latest technologies to upgrade

their production system in order to make sure their feed is "clean". FAMSUN said that it

had gained an increasing number of new orders in past few months for its retentioner.

Feed millers add this equipment into their existing conditioning systems to cook feed

in a constant high-temperature disinfection environment (temperature>85℃, retention

time>120s) before pelleting. It is proven to be able to kill all viruses and bacteria during

processing, including ASFv.

8. Increasing competition, more consolidated but diversified development

There simply isn't enough pork in the world to satisfy Chinese demand due to ASF, especially

as the escalating of U.S.-China trade war. The demand-supply gap cannot be easily filled up

by other proteins, though people in China may have consumed other proteins, like chicken,

duck, seafood, beef, and sheepmeat, for instead. In feed industry, it is more competitive,

especially in aquafeed sector. Pig feed manufacturers start to adjust their product profile

and extend to poultry feed and auqafeed markets. China's key pig feed producer TWINS

Group, for example, announced a sales target of 4 million tons of poultry feed and 2 million

tons of fish feed in 2023.

China has a long history in raising insects

for food and feed. It is the major supplier

and exporter of insect protein for feed in

the world. According to a report of askci,

the insect protein market in China was 2.07

billion RMB in 2014, and more than half of

which was used as supplements in feed

industry. Through years' development, insect

meal has been included in the category

of feed raw material catalogue in China.

A regulatory framework that equipped

to handle the potential risks has already

been established. The latest, for example, is

about an association standard on Dry Black

Soldier Fly Used in Feed that proposed by

Guangzhou Province in July 2018.

There are many insect-related companies

in China and more startups are expected

to spring up. Besides local companies, the

market also attracted world's leading insect

companies such as Protix, a Netherlands-

based company who farms insects

predominantly for animals and aquaculture

feed, to come China to scale up production

and establish traction.

Regulatory, technological advancements,

investments... there's a long road ahead for

insect developing into an "industry" in China,

but the U.S.-China trade war, no doubt,

will accelerate the scaling production and

application of Insect-For-Feed in China in

few years.

6. Increasing feed utilization by precision

farming

China losses more than 100 billion RMB in

feed every year, because of the low feed

digestibility of farmed animals and fish,

according to a report of academician Yin

Yulong. That's equal to a waste of 160 billion

kilowatt hours in energy and 40 million tons

of grains or 15 million tons of soybeans,

not including the waste because of animal

disease and the unscientific feeding of some

household farms. More than 1 million pigs

were culled in the past few months because

of ASF, that means a lot of feed input but

nothing output. What a sad story for a

country that heavily depends on importing

grains and soybeans to produce feed for

the largest livestock-farming industry in the

world. Precision Livestock Farming (PLF),

probably, can help end the story.

Precision livestock farming or smart farming

is based on know-how of farmed animals and

advanced technologies. It can help farmers

make decisions as early as possible to

optimize the contribution of each animal, and

eventually make better farms with increased

profitability, animal welfare and reduced

impact on environment. The development

of loT, artificial intelligence, cloud storage

and big data, as well as automation and

sensing technologies makes it possible to

provide precision animal farming solutions

for improving living conditions and avoiding

illness, optimizing feed usage along the

supply chain, improving genetics and the

reproduction cycle, seeking balance between

production, welfare and health, and avoiding

the emission of greenhouse gases to the

atmosphere.

Still in its infancy, precision livestock farming

has already benefited some animal farming

companies in China. In one of the pig

farms of China State Farm Group, B-mode

Ultrasound is used to detect the fat-free lean

index of fattening pigs, and helps optimize

diets with precise nutrition for them. There

Rabobank projected that low feed demand and weak margins in 2019 and 2020 will speed up industry consolidation in

China. Leading companies will continue to seize market share while a lot of small and medium-size feed companies will

phase out.

Other signs also indicate that, key players are more likely to take the chances of industry adjustment to diversify their

business. They are likely to develop a safe, traceable, and more integrated supply chain themselves. The acquisition of pig

breeding company WUHAN TIANZHONG by JINXINNONG FEED is an example. Considering that epidemic diseases also

spread during livestock transport, big feed companies who own animal farms probably will extend to slaughterhouse and

cold-chain logistics business to keep their food products safe and more controllable.

Health care currently is the most attractive field. As the awareness of bio-security management in farms and feed mills

increased, disinfectant and pesticide products are in a great demand in China. Foreign animal health care companies earn

a great market share this year. Chinese feed companies who also operate in animal health care business, like DBN, HAID,

ZHENGBANG, AONONG etc., will not miss such a niche market.

Working Together to Improve Bio-Security and Stop ASF —The Beijing African Swine Fever Conference Successfully Held

China's national pig herd is nearing crisis point following an outbreak

of African Swine Fever. Unlike normal Swine Fever, the African variety

is deadly and already China's pig numbers were down over 16

percent in February 2019 compared to the same month in 2018. Sow

numbers falling at just under 20 percent based on a survey of 28

percent of China's 1406 counties. This year from January to February,

overall pig numbers are declining at roughly five percent per month.

There are more than 110 reported outbreaks of the deadly ASF in

some 30 provinces, reports the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural

Affairs, and the disease is spreading.

The health of swine herd is paramount. The livelihoods of pig

producers, pork processors, swine feed manufacturers depends on it.

In addition to that, since the available pork declined, the consumer

price raises. The whole supply chain will suffer more if the deadly

disease continue to spread.

Gathering joint forces from all aspects of the industry, from upstream

to downstream, to take precautions to improve bio-security and stop

ASFv is very essential for the Chinese pig industry to rebuild a healthy

industry.

As one of the important links, FAMSUN and its partner HUALI- a

brought together key players in China pig industry to the Beijing

African Swine Fever Conference on March 27.

Supporting by China National Animal Husbandry General Station,

China Feed Industry Association, China Animal Husbandry

Association, Jiangsu Feed Industry Association and Milling and

Grain magazine, the one-day conference invited globally renown

academics, experts, and veterinarians to explore the prevention and

control of ASF from feed bio-security to the detection and diagnosis

of ASFv, vaccine research and development, the practical experiences,

etc. Over 160 attendees were able to learn more about the disease,

how it spreads and what can be done to either maintain or protect

farms from contracting the disease.

Defa Li, received his Ph. D from Kansas State University US. He has

been engaged in the research and application of technologies

to improve feed resources utilization since 1978. He currently

is a professor in Animal Nutrition and Nutritional Evaluation of

Feed, Director of Committee of China Feed Animal Research and

Application, Dean of College of Animal Science and Technology

at China Agricultural University and chairman of scientific

committee on state key Lab. on animal nutrition. He also has

rich experience in serving as editor or editorial board member

for various journals across the field, such as associate Editor of

Asian-Australasian Journal of Animal Science, Editor of Archives of

Animal Nutrition. He was elected an academician of the Chinese

Academy of Engineering in 2013 and the President of China Feed

Industry Association in 2016.

In his speaking, Professor Li emphasized that the prevention and

control of ASFv in farms is not enough, the potential transmission

of this disease should be cut off from the perspective of feed

safety, including reasonable selection and use of feedstuffs,

technological innovation of nutritious feed, the improvement of

feed manufacturing technology, the storage and transportation

of feed, the update of physical and chemical treatments, the

development and application of new feed additives and so on.

Dr. E. Wayne Johnson has worked as a veterinarian and served

pig farms for more than 40 years. Currently he works for Enable

Ag-Tech Consulting as the senior Technical Consultant and

provides comprehensive services for Chinese pig enterprises,

including nutrition, disease, environment, management and

breeding, and also makes some formulas for enterprises.

Dr. E. Wayne Johnson started his speaking from the clinical signs

and the distinguished diagnosis of infected pig. He introduced

the characteristics of ASFv in details, and gave out practical

prevention and control methods such as disinfection, treatment

in feed mills and feed processing flow, and solutions for pig farms

infected of African swine fever virus.

Roger Parfitt graduated from the Newcastle University and his major

is Advanced Pig Breeding Technology. Roger has been working for the

animal farming industry for more than 40 years. Before Joining HuaLi,

Roger worked as a consultant in many Asian countries for a long period

of time.

In his speech, Roger said that the biggest risk for pig farm comes from

"people", followed by carrier tools, feed and drinking water, dead

pig management, visitors, etc. Only by implying strict bio-security

channels, can the pig farms keep ASFv out.

Chris Jackson ran a breeding company nucleus herd at his

family farm in Staffordshire for 40 years before retiring from pig

production in 2005. For the last 12 years he has worked full time as

the export promoter for the British Pig Association, an Approved

Trade Association for DIT supported export promotion program. He

is an acknowledged expert on pig production worldwide with an in

depth knowledge of the pig industry.

Chris introduced the lessons learned from swine foot-and-mouth

disease in UK, and gave out a practical emergency plan for the

prevention and control of African Swine Fever, including the

practical schemes of checklists, information of farms, actions at the

level of farms, education & training, bios-security and health policies

of farms.

"Working together is essential for the Chinese pig industry to

combat and bring this devastating disease under control and

feed manufacturers are in a good position to co-ordinate such an

approach and work closely with pig farmers," Roger Gilber from

Milling and Grain Magazine made a report on this conference after

its success. "This won't be an easy or short-term fix but an approach

that addresses an ongoing issue that both feed manufactures and

their pig-rearing clients must adopt and this is the first step in that

process," he commented.

As technical solution partners in agrifood industry, both FAMSUN

A series of training courses is proceeding

the Southeast Asia. Soon following the Beijing Conference, training courses on ASFv Control were organized in responding to the

requests of clients and local industry on April 15-16 in Yangzhou and April 25 in Vietnam.

Mike Button has over 35 years' experience in the animal

and veterinary health industry. Currently he works for Mirius

(former Coventry Chemicals) as General Manager – Healthcare

specializing in animal health and bio-security across the world.

In his speaking, Mike introduced the performance of different

disinfectant chemistries on against bacteria, virus, fungi and

spores. He shared the knowledge of bio-security system and

gave out answers to the question: how to obtain total exclusion

on ASFv, with detail cleaning and disinfection procedures for

feed mills, pig farms, and during livestock transportation. At the

end, he made a recommendation on the Omnicide—an effective

disinfectant that can kill ASFv, and has been independent tested

by the European Reference Laboratory for its effectiveness

against ASFv.

Dr. Lawrence Brown is the Animal Science & Aquaculture Sector

Specialist for the UK Government's Agri-Tech Organization within

the Department for International Trade (DIT). His role is to increase

overseas inward investment by linking academia and industry to

develop world-class R&D and business opportunities in the sector.

He provides scientific advice on animal and aquaculture health &

welfare, from nutrition and genetics, to veterinary pharmaceuticals

and sustainable agriculture.

Lawrence introduce the latest development of ASFv vaccine in UK. "It

is feasible," he said, "but optimization is the next thing we need to do.

Dozens of experiments and farm trials should be carried out to prove

its safety before the vaccine go into market."

gave the guideline on dust control and hazard prevention by combining the latest GB19081 Standard.

For the coming aquaculture season, Mr. Rob Strathman, President of FAMSUN-USA Design & Engineering introduced FAMSUN's latest

extrusion technology to boost efficiency, safety and sustainability in aquafeed production.
